A Chorus Line Kicks In To Town!

Seventeen dancers. Eight spots. One dream.

T

he all-new Australian production of one the most successful American Broadway musicals of all time, A CHORUS LINE will play at Sydney’s Capitol Theatre for 21 performances only from 20 July, 2012. Having played to full houses in Adelaide and Melbourne, this iconic smash hit musical is directed and re-staged by Baayork Lee, one of the original cast members and inspirations from the Tony Award® winning 1975 production. The sensational cast of 30 is headed by Josh Horner (Billy Elliot on Broadway, Tivoli, Dirty Dancing, Dancing With the Stars) who plays formidable Broadway director, Zach. Josh says “This role of Zach really speaks to me. You see people giving their heart and soul and you are in control of their dreams. I’ve been on both sides of that role so A CHORUS LINE mirrors perfectly my life as a dancer.” Starring as Cassie is Australian star of the West End, Anita Louise Combe who made her first professional appearance on stage as Sillabub in the Australian Premiere Production of Cats followed by Cosette in Les Miserables. Anita is one of the few people in the world to date who has played both roles of Roxie Hart and Velma Kelly in the production of Chicago in the West End. Anita created the role of Stephanie Mangano in the World Premiere Production of Saturday Night Fever opposite fellow Australian, Adam Garcia and played Betty in Sunset Boulevard in London and Toronto. Producer Tim Lawson says “I am thrilled that Sydney audiences will be able to share the magic of A CHORUS LINE. With the popularity of shows such as X Factor, Australian Idol and So You Think You Can Dance, I knew the time was right for A CHORUS LINE to be presented. 4

People have a newly found understanding and insight into the dreams and challenges of aspiring performers. It has thrilled audiences in Adelaide and Melbourne, and I am sure Sydney audiences will be similarly enthralled.” A CHORUS LINE was originally conceived, choreographed and directed by the legendary Michael Bennett, featuring a book by James Kirkwood and Nicholas Dante, with music by Marvin Hamlisch and lyrics by Edward Kleban. The original production of A CHORUS LINE opened at the Public Theatre’s Newman Theatre in 1975 and transferred to Broadway’s Shubert Theatre later that year. It won the Pulitzer Prize for Drama, nine Tony Awards®, including Best Musical, Score and Book, seven Drama Desk Awards and the New York Drama Critics Circle Award. It ran for 6,137 performances over 15 years becoming the longest running musical in Broadway history. Director Baayork Lee has been involved in A CHORUS LINE since 1975, when she was invited by director Michael Bennett to participate in the workshops from which the show was developed, with the role of Connie Wong in large part based on her own life. She has since directed and choreographed 35 international productions of the show with her knowledge

and passion lending an inspiration to dancers around the globe and to the tapestry of each new production. “The Australian production has caught the attention of international promoters as well, with bookings through Asia and Europe in place. The Sydney production, for that reason, is limited to 21 performances only.” “Our production is particularly special in that it boasts a truly remarkable cast of both newly discovered talent and industry stalwarts. They take the experience to an incredible level” says Mr Lawson. A CHORUS LINE tells the tale of 17 dancers desperately auditioning for eight stage roles in a musical. In an empty theatre, on a bare stage, this audition is the chance of a lifetime. It’s what they’ve worked for – with every drop of sweat, every hour of practice, every minute of every day of their lives. Their personal human stories are told through captivating song, riveting drama and stunning choreography. A CHORUS LINE is a timeless Broadway masterpiece for a new generation that speaks to everyone who’s ever had a dream and put everything on the line.

“ . . fears, tears and ultimate triumph and tragedy of a life lived on the edge.

Worth standing in line for.” - Adelaide Advertiser “Breathtaking dancing. A visual and aural feast.” - Herald Sun “Superb. Marvelous entertainment. Audiences are in for a treat” - The Age TICKETS ON SALE NOW! Venue: Capitol Theatre, Sydney When: From 20 July for 21 performances only Cost: From $69.90 Bookings: Ticketmaster 1300 723 038 www.achorusline.com.au

Gold and silver are hot commodities as the global financial crisis continues to bite at many of the world’s economies

E

ach week it seems as if countries like Greece and Portugal are set to finally default on their massive debts. Meanwhile, the gold and silver markets continue to appreciate as many seek a haven from stocks and property. Imagine being able to collect gold and silver assets, while also earning an income – just by sharing the products with friends and family? Numis Network is a unique, oneof-a-kind company which has just arrived in Australia and is based on a simple premise: Create Wealth, Collect Wealth and Preserve Wealth. Numis Network’s Silver Coin of the Month Club offers members to collect silver coins from a number of mints around the world, including the US, Canada, the UK, Mexico, and our own Perth Mint.

Boomers Finance This month Venn Williams of Halogen Private Wealth Services discusses “Housing Elderly Parents” Having recently had my elderly mother from Adelaide stay with us has prompted me to consider some future options. As our parents become more elderly, we often find the parent/child relationship gradually reversing. Sometimes, successful professionals in the 40’s to 60’s age groups find themselves providing housing for their parents (or in-laws). This may be by necessity (parents with insufficient financial resources of their own), or by choice (a desire to have them live with and be cared for by family rather than nursing or retirement home). This is often done by having the parents move into the home of one child, and often involves modifications to cater for them. Usually in those cases, the parents contribute to some of the costs, where they are able. Alternatively, a new house may be purchased for all to live in, or a separate property owned by a child might be made available to the parents.

It’s a fabulous way of building a legacy of assets to pass onto children and grandchildren. Coins are also a great way of making history fun for children, as there is a story behind every coin. For boomers looking to earn some extra money, it is possible to earn cash from sharing the Silver Coin of the Month Club with family and friends, while also collecting valuable assets. For more information about the Silver Coin of the Month Club or if you’re interested in starting your own home-based business, call Brooke on 0438 677 588 or go to www.numisone.com/ brookestoddart

– What are the land tax implications? •

Some questions which should be considered include: •

The parents’ Centrelink entitlements: – Will money contributed towards modifications to a child’s home be treated as a gift for asset and income test purposes, and therefore be regarded as still owned by the parents for a number of years? o Will the parents miss out on potential entitlements such as rental assistance?

Taxation: – What are the capital gains tax implications for the property, particularly where it is not the child’s main residence? Are there advantages in having the parents buy a portion of the property?

Parents’ security of tenure: – What guarantee do the parents have that they can live in the property for the rest of their lives (if that is intended)? – What if the child and his or her spouse separate? Or the child dies or becomes bankrupt? Might the parents be turfed out by a third party in those circumstances?

Parents’ estate planning: – How is the parents’ contribution to the modifications to be treated on a distribution of the parents’ estate? (Is it a partial distribution of the child’s entitlement? At what value: original amount, or current value?) – Might the child claim an entitlement to more than an equal share of the parents’ estate, because of having cared for the parents? What is the agreement about this? What promises have been made?

Too often these arrangements are not properly documented and are not properly considered from financial planning, taxation and legal view points.

Not all coins are created equal. Like diamonds, coins are graded on a number of factors which add to their value and collectability. All of Numis Network’s Silver Coin of the Month Club coins are certified and graded at the highest level which is Mint State 70 (MS70), which is classified as a perfect, museum quality collectible grade.

– Should the parents pay rent? How does this affect the child’s income tax and capital gains tax?

Child’s estate planning: – If the child dies, what is intended to be done for the parents? Is this in the child’s Will? Or in a binding agreement?

These are only some of the issues which can arise. Each family situation is unique and requires experienced professional advice. Even where no conflict is expected (though any family can experience it), the taxation and financial planning aspects alone make advice essential. Computer Savvy with George Kimpton Continuing on from last month, George reviews Corel and it’s “graphics magic”

L

ast issue we took a brief overall look at Corel Graphics Suite X6. Quite frankly I could fill a book with the features of this package. And it IS value for money. It allows the inner artist to create art which is limited only by the imagination particularly if you use a graphics tablet to replace the mouse. Apart from working on photos, where again the limit is only in your imagination, you can combine photos and the art you create. In addition you have a screen grab facility which can be useful in the event of problems to help diagnose the cause when forwarded to the technician or technical friend. It allows you to capture either part or the full screen and the capture can then be used in anything. This can also be used to clip or lift parts of a picture to be used elsewhere. It also provides a duplex facility for double sided printing and a Font navigator. You wouldn’t believe just how many fonts I found on my computer. 615 installed and the capability for more than a thousand others including some fancy ones. In addition there are quite a number of clip art items covering a phenomenal range from Animals to Transportation. And these can be discovered by using the Connect facility. Connect searches your computer for all available pictures. To help you handle all these there are eight videos by our own Scott Georgeson that introduce you to the wonders of this whole package. He takes you step by step though many 6

features. He also has, on his own web site, a whole range of extra videos that can be purchased for a reasonable fee. Corel Photo also has facilities if you have a scanner for scanning. Documents scanned here, if text, can be translated to editable text in say Word format where you can edit

them and use as you see fit. The package for this Scansoft Omnipage. Once scanned it is possible to play all sorts of tricks including changing resolution, converting to Black and white, grayscale and CMYK formats. In fact with all the tools available it reinforces the saying, don’t ever believe any thing that

you haven’t seen taken yourself. I can pretty much say that whatever you want to do with a photo you will find a way to do it with this package. For instance under the Adjust tab the menu offers Straighten Image, Contrast Enhancement, Tone Curve, Gamma, Hue/Saturation/ Lightness, Vibrance, Colour, www. he y b oome r s . c om. a u

Tone etc and many more. This is truly a versatile package where there is little in the way of limits to what you can do. For instance using layers in Draw you can stack photos or part photos in layers. Depending how you prepare the bitmaps in Photo you can have translucent backgrounds and then blend these with your other art work When working in Draw itself you can create trays of objects or art wok to allow quick selection during work. Object Dockers allow adjustment of properties at the click of the mouse and of course there is the Smart Carver tool shown in the last issue. There are a whole stack of shape tools to use when creating art objects. These respond to Smear, Pressure, Twirl, Rate or Speed and Attract or Repel when using a brush or pen. These would work very well with a tablet when into serious art work.. There are also Clip Masks that allow you to edit specific objects such as transparency levels. Master layers allow special setups

for multi page documents and provide page numbering. Colour Styles makes it easy to create continuity throughout a project.

and Postscript. It is also possible to Extrude, apply Drop Shadows, Contours etc. The Eye Dropper allows you to lift and match colours with great accuracy.

The drawing tools include Brushes, Sprayers, Calligraphic, Pressure and Pen while all the time applying fills and varying line styles. Draw uses vector drawing which gives much smoother line forms than is normal with a mouse. Again it would be worth while considering the use of a tablet where a pen or stylus replaces the mouse and provides much cleaner line control. With Vector objects it is also possible to change the size of an object easily.

With Photo there are a whole range of masking tools which allow you to pick out and work on selected items or objects. One of these is a Magnetic Mask which follows the colour outline of a specific object so that you can edit or cut accurately. Brush Tools include Paint, Effect (Colour and Tone), Image Sprayer, Undo Brush, Replace Colour Brush, Object and Colour Transparency.

There is quite a range of fills, Uniform, Fountain, Texture

Really as I have said all along a great package for those into art and special effects.. J u ly 2 01 2

The legendary Lil’ Band O’ Gold “Plays Fats”

I

n 2010 Dust Devil Music featured the worldwide premiere release of ‘The Promised Land’, by legendary Lafayette, Louisiana ‘Swamp Pop, Country, Cajun, Blues and Rock n Roll Supergroup’, Lil’ Band o’ Gold. EMI has brought you the next instalment of goodness from Louisiana with the release of ‘Lil’ Band O’ Gold Play Fats’. This record features cover versions of the bands favorite Fats Domino songs with guest vocalists and fans Robert Plant, Lucinda Williams, Ani DiFranco and our very own Jimmy Barnes and Tim Rogers lending a hand. Again Australia is the very first place that this record was made available. Lil’ Band o’ Gold features some of the most influential musicians to ever have emerged from America’s most important musical state. The outfit was assembled by vocalist and guitarist CC Adcock, who searched the swamps and flatlands of South Louisiana to form a band of his childhood heroes. This process was captured for the documentary The Promised Land: A Swamp Pop Journey that was a feature at the Tribeca, SxSW and Melbourne International Film Festivals. Each member of Lil Band o Gold is a master of a separate style, both diverse and exciting and collectively they comprise a mix of unsurpassed talents. This latest release “LBOG Plays Fats” was born out of afternoons in New Orleans spent recording and running Fats Domino’s extraordinary songbook with Robert Plant and Fats himself! Individually, the members of the band have toured and recorded with everyone from Slim Harpo to Phillip Glass, Link Wray to Bob Dylan, Bo Diddley and Dewey Balfa. A-list musical icons are frequent guests to the LBOG stage. Lil’ Band O’ Gold is one of the rare formations of legendary musicians who actually live up to the often overused moniker ‘Supergroup’! They have successfully toured Australia two times to packed houses and rave reviews (“We absolutely love it down their” - adds the band upon reviewing this one sheet!). The incredible array of performers in Lil’ Band o’ Gold will produce a certain type of magic and firstgeneration roots authenticity that’s rarely ever found in live music today.

The “King” lives in Elvis to the Max

It’s Entertainment

It’s the 35th Anniversary of the death of “The King”. Relive the experience with Max Pellicano’s tribute show “Elvis to the Max”

T

his year marks the 35th Anniversary of the death of one of the most important figures of the 20th century pop culture. A cultural icon, widely known by the single name Elvis, who is often referred to as the “King of Rock and Roll” or simply “The King”. But now the memory and legend lives on in the guise of Max Pellicano, whose uncanny resemblance and equally chilling performance has mesmerised Australians over the last two decades. Is it no wonder some people still refuse to believe that Elvis Presley is dead! Max Pellicano’s tribute Elvis To The Max goes beyond mere impersonation. His recreation of “The King” looks, moves, vocal style, impressions and humour is so accurate, its awe-inspiring. You need to sound like the real thing and

DIRECT FROM USA THE ‘KING’ IN CONCERT

Max Pellicano has worked hard at that. Not only is the voice important, it’s also knowing how to become the man himself on stage. There are lots of Elvis impersonators around, but Max Pellicano is considered as the best. Critics have described him as ‘Elvis ‘resurrected” and ‘reincarnated’ People just “Can’t help falling in love” with Elvis to the Max. In addition, the costumes worn by Max Pellicano are exact replicas made by Elvis’ personal tailor Bill Bellow. The shimmering encrusted “White Eagle” costume is a $10,000 recreation, identical the one worn by Elvis in 1972. Elvis To The Max production “The King In Concert” will be presented in three stages: “The King of Rock ‘n’ Roll” - The 50’s Masters; the ‘68

Max Pellicano is

Comeback Television Special that was regarded as a forerunner of the so-called “Unplugged” concept; and the music concert that was called “Aloha From Hawaii”. Max Pellicano was born in Monte Carlo, of French and Italian parents. He spent most of his childhood in New York before moving to San Francisco at the age of 14. Today, he is based in Detroit. He has been a professional actor and entertainer since 1974 when he graduated from the California State University with a degree in Dramatic Arts. Max Pellicano first brought Elvis (as an actor) to life on stage in a production of Bye Bye Birdie. “I was doing musicals and theatre and had to study Jailhouse Rock for my role as the Elvis-type character, Conrad Birdie. I studied the way he walked,

the way he talked and the way he moved for months. I guess you could say I got into impersonating Elvis in a kind of round-about way” he said. His performance led to an Elvis tribute show and the rest is history. “I learnt long ago that the fans don’t want the legend to die. They want to keep the memory going”. Max said.

hey! Hey! Boomers has two double passes to see the show at Belmont 16s on Saturday 22nd September to give away. To win, simply email your name & contact details to heyboomers@ bigpond.com with “Elvis” in the subject line.

It’s Entertainment C

HITTY CHITTY BANG BANG, the most fantasmagorical stage musical in the history of everything, flies into Sydney’s Capitol Theatre from 16 November. You’ll believe a car can fly in this stage adaptation of CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG that features sensational sets, stunning special effects, an irresistible story and memorable classics such as “Truly Scrumptious,” “Toot Sweets,” “Hushabye Mountain” and, of course, its Oscarnominated title song “Chitty Chitty Bang Bang”. All these ingredients add up to a West End and Broadway blockbuster the whole family will love. Based on the timeless novel by Ian Fleming, author/ creator of the James Bond franchise, the production features music and lyrics by the legendary Sherman brothers, composers of Mary Poppins with original script and fresh adaptation directed by Ray Roderick.

“Chitty Chitty Bang Bang remains an amazing spectacle, with sets to take the breath away and hitech wizardry that makes Harry Potter look pedestrian” - The Sun Originally written by Ian Fleming for his son, the much loved 1968 film CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG staring Dick Van Dyke and Sally Ann Howes was part of everyone’s childhood.

“BREATHTAKING. It’s a big joyful, enchanting show” Sunday Times The movie began life as a personal dream of James Bond producer, Albert R. “Cubby” Broccoli. As with all his film projects, “Cubby” Broccoli surrounded himself with the very best British talent available to ensure the success of Chitty, which at the time was publicised as the largest and most expensive musical ever filmed in England. The director, Ken Hughes, who had also adapted the screenplay with prolific children’s author Roald Dahl, led the British film crew. The Sherman brothers, fresh from major success with the Disney Studios, provided the score and songs, earning an Oscar nomination in the process. CHITTY CHITTY BANG BANG opened at the London Palladium to rave reviews on Tuesday 16 April 2002. The London production was
