Composition of Desire Civic Centre Hub Design City of Ryde, Australia Wang, Yaohua | Fall 2018

Starting from 2D composition drawings, in this project I focused on re-establishing objects in space and its composition relationship.

Constant translations of 2D and 3D agencies and the conceptual and real site situation were realized. With a series of generic cube motives, this project emphasis the concise 2D profile and the fuzzy deeper space at the same time.

The square is the approach to this project.

Taking the sheared cube as a motif, and to create an object out of a series of this motif. Without grid as a structure to arrange elements, the technique of oblique has been constantly used to translate volume profile to switch the main surface people are observing.

Object

Starting from an abstract 2D geometry, the oblique shape of the motif provides 2D quality within the 3D volume, and the intersection of different elements requires constant travel of observation. The negative motif is shown as concave moments and piped forms, when some of them reproject onto the main object and create another layer.

The motif of the cube, starting from one and constantly adapting the technique of oblique, generates the basic volume of the civic center.

The merging and reappearing of the geometries provide new opportunities and the new wholeness of the object.

Interior of this object is reinforced by the three intersecting spaces: the auditorium, the cafe, and the meeting center. Defined by the intersecting motives, they contain central gravity of the interior arrangement.

The pipe forms developed into two different directions that allow containing circulation and functions: the relative vertical ones accommodate the stairs go through every floor, the relative horizontal ones take the position of circulation, and some of the biggest pipes are able to develop into functioning space and merge into the other geometries.

Floating Parking Structure Renovation & Redevelopment USC Campus Park, Los Angeles, California Ting, Selwyn | Fall 2017

This project is a renovation and redevelopment of the Parking Structure A at the southwest corner of USC campus. The functional goal of the project is to turn some area of the existing structure into classrooms and offices and to help with the deficiency in educational space of the campus. The existing parking structure is a frequent-used, pre-casted giant concrete structure which has its own advantages and deficiency. The new project, which is called FLOATING, will try to resume the good from the old structure and find a way to solve the existing problem.

The Parking Structure A leaves an unsafe impression in students’ minds. In the book The Death and Life of Great American Cities, Jane Jacob explained how the delicate network of “eyes on the street” works in keeping the environment safe and pleasant, and to improve the status of Parking Structure A, the introduction of the pedestrian to this place is quite necessary.

The classrooms, which is the main function of this project, has the characteristic of pulsatile variation in time of use, so introducing leisure function to this project is in need.

The boring horizontal facades and the deficient structure status need to be fixed in the new project. Floating boxes containing educational space is added to the structure with new steel support. The old egress stairs are renovated, and a new eyecatching outdoor stair is added to pull people up from the ground.

Leading people from the daily commute to go through a series of events and moments and finally arrive at the view deck and performing space which expresses as a spiritual voice in this project, the main stair is a materialized symbol of detachment.

Devouring Mother Movie Architecture Study Downtown Phoenix, Arizona Vekstein, Claudio | Spring 2017

The project is an extension of Hitchcock's movie Psycho. Norman Bates, the hero of Psycho, is a murderer with a dual personality.

At daytime, Norman is the gentle owner of Bate's Motel, but at night he becomes the vicious mother who tries to protect her son by murdering young ladies and detectives around Norman. With architectural language, I try to seize the essential moment of these murdering events, and the devouring mother, who has already died for decades yet still occupying her son's mind and body, is what I believe the ultimate of events. Past will never pass, the memory of murdering remains in Norman's brain and composes a swirl of the landscape around the tumble hybrid house.

Storyboard of New Bate's Motel New Bate's Motel opened at downtown Phoenix. Followed the advice of the architect (me) and the psychologist (also me), Norman agrees to face the internal reality and build the new motel with the hybrid style of his old motel and his mother's gothic villa. The landscape, which can partially serve as parking function, is abstracted from his past experience, which contains bitter as well as sweet. However, once the new motel is completed, crowds of people start gathering around it to protest of this architecture of murderer. The angry noise is so loud that the police have to intervene. Norman Bates, crumbling inside of his new motel, have to face this nightmare with eyes wild open.

Gone House Minimal Folding Living Unit Design Tanhualin, Wuhan, Hubei, China SUNRISE National Student Architecture Competition

To find a way to respect and react to the historical buildings and create a refreshing power within the old town is the point of this design. Meanwhile, the new building should contain a special sense of modern.To answer the challenge of the site, a concept of folding space is raised. Changeable space paradigm contains a vague modern spirit and avoids resembling historical architectural form. To deal with the high building density, I take a very good use of existing grey space. Disperse units are organized by frames, which makes it possible to protect the surface of initial buildings and reserve the street space. Interior design complies with the envelope structures.

The foldable design can divide the use time and the spare time. The invisible units will be no barrier of sunlight and will not increase the density of initial context. In addition, the foldable units can fit personal needs.

Interweaving Community Center Design Jianghan Rd., Wuhan, Hubei, China Dong, Hexuan | Spring 2015

The design is in the triangle area formed by Yangzi Street and Victory Street and adjacent to four communities, which were founded in different ages. We analysis people's behaviors in 24 hours and simulate possible situation. By doing this, we are able to abstract the local's daily routine to help us to improve our design in urban scale, site planning and function settlement of the structure. Building a new community center instead of it will provide an ideal place for the residents' activity which will promote their contacts and communications, and have them enjoy a more convenient and harmonious life.

The site is not in a general shape and is shaped by surrounding communities. The complexity of context is the main question to answer.

There are 4 main open spaces around the building. That provides multiple entrances and makes every facade a showing facade.

The building is planted in the meeting point of 4 communities. We hope that we can make our project designed in a modest way.

Due to the inconvenience of the site, we want our project provides an alternative way to connect, not only in traffic but in communication among people from 4 communities.

A Journey with Wind Urban Design Wuhan, Hubei, China Chen, Hong | Fall 2015 Collaboration with Man Huang

The booming need of residential pushes residents to occupy more and more public space. Additional construction has made the ventilation and lighting conditions in the community less than ideal, which makes locals unwilling to go out for social activities.

Based on the original context of the old town, we designed characteristic outer space for different people. Furthermore, to fully express our idea for tracing wind, we even designed specific installations for convert vague wind into seeable and audible wind. By showing residents the wind trace with water streaks and leaves rustling, the urban ventilation channel design is hopeful to be understood.

These blocks are besides a riverside main road with two bus stations. Blocks are motor-dominant and short of walking path.

The entrances of communities are the active spots. Residents are mainly seniors, children and nonnatives.

Wind is the invisible energy, which compleste the exchange of energy by promoting airflow. In the community ventilation environment transformation, we have improved the ventilation quality in the community, and provide favourable conditions for outdoor activities.In further the design of urban furniture, we focus on the activation of the people's social behavior. With "the winding path" as the theme to a series of design, the invisible wind will be shown with visual, auditory and tactile way , so that the winding path is easy to be understood.
