PROFITABILITY IS TEXAS ANGUS’ KEY BREEDING OBJECTIVE

Our breeding program has always been focused on PROFITABILITY and now more than ever having, cattle that are PROFITABLE is PARAMOUNT. Our program is designed to deliver live calves with explosive growth that are perfect for the weaner markets but then continue to pack on the kilos for the backgrounder, feeder, hit market specifications and target carcass weights for the processor. These carcasses are then sold through the beef chain onto the exporters, or the end point of sale in the domestic market including the butcher or supermarket where they all get a slice of the Texas genetically bred profit pie!

Our bulls are sold Australia wide from northern Qld down to Tassie and as far as the west. When they are sold our marketing doesn’t just stop at the bull sale, we always help market those bulls’ progeny sell under the TEX brand so our clients can receive those extra dollars. This was very evident in March this year where commercial PTIC Verified Angus heifers in calf to Texas ICEMAN topped at $4,800 ($1037.8c/kg) and averaged $3,950 for Macka’s Angus first very successful commercial female sale at the Gloucester Saleyards. While their sisters, PTIC to back up Angus bulls which were 5kgs on average heavier sold on average $1,220 LESS than the PTIC heifers in calf to ICEMAN! That’s a huge difference in profits and what’s even more pleasing, these PTIC heifers in calf to ICEMAN were purchased by a Texas client.

Adding to that, the Haling family of Woolbrook NSW sold an outstanding draft of Angus weaner heifers all by Texas bulls that topped the heifer section of this year’s Virbac Weaner Challenge at Tamworth NSW amongst 7,570 weaners selling that day! Their 7-9 month olds were awarded the runner up champion heifer pen and sold for $1,450/hd ($530 above the average) and again another Texas client from Goondiwindi Qld purchased the majority of them.

Even on the seedstock level, it was terrific to see Texas POWERSHIFT sons being the highlight of Stu & Nat Hann’s Nampara Angus Bull Sale where 27 POWERSHIFT sons sold to a top of $40,000 and average $20,333 and Nampara Angus had the highest South Australian Bull Sale average selling 98 bulls for $15,541!

We continue to benchmark our breeding program to identify those breeding lines that are the MOST PROFITABLE by entering in feeder carcass trials and competing against all breeds and crosses from some of the best seedstock and commercial cattle operations on the eastern seaboard. Last year, we won the Eating Quality sections of both RAS Beef

Challenge and RNA Paddock to Palate. We won the illusive GOLD MEDAL EATING QUALITY AWARD with a pen of 6 heifers in the 100 day fed export class. Never before have we won the rare GOLD MEDAL, only being able to enter heifers and having all six score up to 69.24 for MSA index and average 65.15 was humbling to say the least. It was noted at the awards night being an incredible achievement but for heifers to score so highly was an outstanding result. It was also fantastic to see Texas NASA heifers score the highest EMA of the entire competition (competing against cross bred steers) and our heifers scoring up to 7 FOR MARBLING on ONLY 100 DAY feed is quite an achievement for our progeny – a great result knowing we are breeding cattle that are not only reducing our carbon footprint but maintaining and improving eating quality. We actually had the HIGHEST MARBLING PENS & INDIVIDUALS at both RAS Beef Challenge and RNA Paddock to Plate Feeder Carcass competition that had over 1,000 head!

This year we have added another 50 bulls to now offer 260 bulls at the sale, our largest ever draft! Our herd has grown substantially though ET and IVF technologies so the number of elite bulls being offered has also increased significantly and we can safely say the quality is as good, if not better, than last year’s draft! We certainly haven’t forgotten the pocket knife where we still castrate at least 30% of the bulls. We will be offering sires like MAVERICK and RAWHIDE that are exclusive to Texas. Also, we will offer the first ICEMAN yearling, Sterling PACIFIC and many other bulls that are currently an outcross for Australian Angus breeders and very new genetics for the breed.

What we are most excited to offer is an incredible line up of sons from foundation dams including 11 sons from the $150,000 Texas PRIDE L600, 10 sons of the $60,000 15 year old Texas PRIDE E30, 6 sons of ICEMAN’s dam Texas UNDINE H647 that are rippers including full brothers to

ICEMAN, other influential donors including Texas TOQUE J602, Texas UNDINE H629, Texas TOQUE N203 and Texas UNDINE L621 all have sons scattered throughout the sale draft allowing our clients the opportunity to secure our very best genetics all afternoon. We are incredibly proud of this year’s quality that the last 60 bulls in the sale are in the front 2 paddocks as you drive into “Doongara”, literally everyone drives through them, so there’s NO TAIL AT TEXAS!
