Hewett Highlights Friday 17th July 2015

No. 293

Sixth Form End of Year Celebration On Friday 10th July, we held an end of year celebration for all our Sixth Form students. This meant congratulating Year 12 on a successful first year in sixth form and saying goodbye to our Year 13s. Students arrived, looking absolutely

stunning, to a transformed West Hall, complete with fairy lights, photo booth and delicious treats. They danced, applauded, laughed and shared a really lovely ending to their first and last years in The Hewett Sixth From.

KS3 Reading Challenge Students in Years 7, 8 and 9 should all have received a reading sheet to complete over the summer holidays. Students have been challenged to read six books and write a short report on them. In September there are prizes to be won for those students who complete the challenge. Anybody

Aspiring

who needs some inspiration on what to read, should come to the library for a recommended reading list and lots of amazing books to borrow!

Mrs Miller is Reading... ‘Blood Red, Snow White’ by Marcus Sedgwick. This is a part historical novel set in Russia following the revolution, and follows the life of one man who was there. His name is Arthur Ransome. He was a writer accused of being a spy, perhaps even a double agent, and he left his wife and beloved daughter and fell in love with Russia and a Russian woman, Evgenia.

Thank You from the English Department The English department would like to thank all the fantastic Year 10 students who supported the Year 6s during their transition fortnight. Although too many to mention here, in Chloe Christian, Taylor Thacker and Ollie Clegg we have teachers in the making!

Literacy Lab

Calendar

This half term’s Literacy Lab focus is… Spelling: The Spelling Bee is finally upon us. We have our champions from each form; a total of 30 students will battle it out to see who will be victorious. Will it be courageous Year 7? A wordsmith Year 8? A lexical genius from Year 9? Or will

a Year 10 pupil decimate the opposition? The Spelling Bee will take place in the library during period 5 on Monday 20th July. There will be prizes for the best in each year group and a star prize for our overall winner. Good Luck!

Year 6 Induction Year 6 students are now in the second week of their Induction at The Hewett School and have been getting to know what life as a Hewett student is really like. Last week they were thrown in the deep end and challenged to make twenty shortbread biscuits each during a Food Technology taster session. They all managed it, and the shortbread was delicious. Miss Atherton said ‘I was really impressed with their focus, team work and organisational skills. It

was a big task to have so many students cooking at once and to get it finished in time - but they did it!’ In an Art lesson they made masks based on images from ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream with Mr Money and these photographs show the fun they had doing it and the fantastic masks that were produced. We are all looking forward to having these students with us permanently in September.

20th—21st July is Week 2 School finishes for the holidays on Tuesday 21st July at 12.20pm. Students return on Thursday 3rd September Word of the Week: Intrepid Fearless; bold I was intrepid as I started my ascent of Everest.

The School Shop

Italy 2016 Miss Fernandes is planning an exciting Geography trip to Italy in March 2016. A group of KS4 and KS5 students will visit the infamous Vesuvius volcano and explore the surrounding area of Naples on a four

day trip. This is to help them with their GCSE and A Level courses, and treat their inner Geographer to an awesome holiday! Further details will be provided in September.

The school shop will be open in the summer holidays between 10am and 2pm on the following dates: Thursday 27th August Friday 28th August Wednesday 2nd September. Uniform will be available to buy and any orders that have already been received will be available for payment and collection.
