The 2010-11 school year is off to a great start with the most new students since 2005, a positive community spirit on campus and a wonderful Hesston Homecoming 2010 with the Science and Math Symposium.

This is an especially exciting year as Jan’s and my daughter Kara begins her “Hesston Experience.” I bring high expectations to these first two formative college years. Knowing Kara will be in great hands with faculty and staff who have helped to make Hesston the No. 2 ranked two-year college in the United States as recognized by Washington Monthly magazine, gives me even more assurance of a great journey for her.

Listening to a young adult alumnus during Homecoming 2010 share his story from Hesston—one of growth amidst pain and the search process to develop a healthy self-identity, also makes me value Hesston College even more and what it offers to students. As he noted, “If not for people at Hesston believing in me, I’m not sure where I would be today.” Homecoming is not just about reconnecting with familiar classmates. It’s a time that allows us to also reflect on one’s life journey and gives us new direction for our future endeavors.

Natural science students learn best in a small college The natural sciences have been viewed as an essential part of a liberal arts curriculum since the time of the Greeks, predating the birth of Christ. While the specific content has changed over time, including assumptions about the earth and its place in the universe, several components of the discipline remain. It is in the natural sciences, perhaps more than in other parts of the curriculum, that students learn both inductive and deductive reasoning and how to think in rational, logical terms. The disciplines of observation and drawing conclusions based upon evidence are practiced every day in the classroom and laboratory.

Hesston College students are learning to collaborate in the laboratory.

The chemistry lab is designed specifically to encourage teamwork rather than perpetuate the idea of the scientist working alone. Jim Yoder has brought the perspective of research at Wichita State University and his experience as a Fulbright Scholar in Swaziland to the classroom and laboratory. Nelson Kilmer has led his physics classes in working on energy related projects with solar power for vehicles, lighting and residential power.

There is an increasing body of evidence to support our claim that natural science students learn best in a small college, where they have daily contact with their major professors in the labs and work on projects that would not be possible in larger settings. Loren Pope, in his book Looking Beyond the Ivy League (1995), makes a case for the small private college. “There is no magic curriculum, program, or method, for the good small colleges do many different things. The magic lies in how they do it. Students and professors collaborate rather than compete. Discussion of values is emphasized. Students are heavily involved in their own education; they work with each other and with their teachers.... They are hiking or dinner companions or intramural teammates, and in these relaxed occasions get insights from bright minds across the spectrum of scholarship. This is cross-fertilization and making connections. It is part of the students’ search to find themselves, and may be as or more important than what happens in the classroom.� (p. 41)

In a plenary session at the 2010 Council of Independent Colleges Presidents Institute, Dr. Sylvia Manning, CEO of the Higher Learning Commission, stated that small independent colleges have produced far more world-class scientists than their resources or numbers would warrant.

She said that part of the genius of the independent college is its mission to serve students, rather than being driven by grant dollars or advanced research agendas.

At Hesston College, we are justifiably proud of the alumni featured in these pages as well as the many more making a difference in the world. We are also blessed to have dedicated, creative, long-term faculty.

Homecoming marked the beginning of a Math-Science Scholarship Endowment Fund specifically for natural science students. Thank you to all who will support this and to all who support the work of Hesston College.

Opportunities for the world

Dale studied music briefly at Hesston College and stays very involved with it today. Heidi Hochstetler ’00, Ron Kilmer ’85 and Kris White ’00 were also part of the worship band.

Dr. Dale Kempf ’75 might have some great advice for the student still deciding on a major, and it might have something to do with taking the opportunities that are presented.

He should know, as it was a series of well-timed opportunities that led him from the deciding student at Hesston College to researching and developing treatments for HIV/AIDS in a 26-year career at Abbott Laboratories.

Dale was a farm boy from Shickley, Neb., and the fourth in a family of six to attend Hesston College. He arrived as a freshman in fall 1973 with plans to study music and Bible, but, like many college students, he changed his mind.

Partway through his first semester Dale decided to study science.

“I was always interested in science and being a scientist even before I knew what they did,” he said.

Fortunately, he took a general chemistry class where he discovered a sense of belonging.

Chemistry professor Jim Yoder remembers Dale well.

“He always did very good work,” says Yoder. “He was an exemplary student, pleasant and unassuming.

Yet he seemed to struggle with a clear direction for his education, as he was a very accomplished musician as well.”

As his two years at Hesston came to a close, Dale realized he wasn’t ready to leave. Yoder recognized Dale’s hesitancy and created a job for him as an intern and lab assistant in the science department. When that year finished, Dale found himself still grappling with the next step. One day Yoder remarked, “Goshen College has a good chemistry program.”

Dale had two options: ignore Yoder’s statement and continue to ponder what happens next, or explore the recommendation. He chose the latter and graduated with a B.A. in chemistry from Goshen College in 1978. He earned his Ph.D. in organic chemistry from the University of Illinois in Champaign, then spent two years doing post-doctoral research in the chemistry department at Columbia University in New York City.

In late summer 1984 another opportunity presented itself – a job with Abbott Laboratories in North Chicago, Ill. Abbott is a global health-care company responsible for developing new medicines and medical technologies.

Dale accepted the position and began his career as a research chemist for Abbott’s Pharmaceutical Products Division developing renin inhibitors – treatments for hypertension.

Three years later he heard the words that would lead to the defining work of his career as a scientist.

“I was in the lab and my former supervisor walked in and said, ‘Dale, there’s a new paper out that speculates that the AIDS virus has a protease.’”

To those not gifted with the understanding of science, that statement would mean very little, but to Dale it meant the opportunity of a lifetime.

“A protease is a common type of enzyme, which accelerates processes in the body,” explains Dale. “I was already working on compounds that could inhibit proteases. If HIV had such a protease, the implication was that we might be able to stop the virus in its tracks.”

AIDS was still a mystery disease in 1987 and essentially 100 percent lethal. The world was only just beginning to understand the magnitude and complexity of the problem. A great scientific challenge lay before Dale and his colleagues. Success would create a huge benefit worldwide.

After several years and hundreds of compounds, Dale and his team saw the release of Norvir in 1996, Abbott’s first HIV protease inhibitor, and one of the first in the world to be approved by the FDA. The development of Norvir eventually led to Abbott’s advanced-generation protease inhibitor, Kaletra, in 2000. HIV is always treated with a combination of drugs to prevent the virus from finding ways around the drugs and becoming resistant. Today, Norvir and Kaletra are used alongside other drugs to provide hope to HIV patients worldwide.

Successes often lead to advancement, which is true for Dale. It has been several years since Dale found himself creating in the lab. Now he keeps busy supervising new research. He currently directs antiviral research at Abbott and works to develop new therapies for the Hepatitis C virus. He is also part of Abbott’s Discovery Medicinal Chemistry Leadership Team, a group of highly experienced medicinal chemists who evaluate internal projects across drug discovery divisions. He serves as scientific head of Abbott’s Executive Committee for Neglected Diseases as well, which provides leadership in identifying ways Abbott can assist in underserved disease areas.

To date, Dale has more than 130 scientific publications and 60 U.S. patents. He has also received numerous awards for his work in the development of antiretroviral drugs, including the National Inventor of the Year in 1997 and Heroes of Chemistry in 2003. These awards honor the scientific expertise needed to create a drug with global impact, but Dale knows it takes more than just expertise.

The opportunities for growth and discovery he experienced while at Hesston College were the building blocks he needed to make his mark on the world.

“Hesston College allowed me to explore different things,” he said. “The campus community was and is an environment that is very supportive. When I started at Hesston I didn’t necessarily have the confidence that I had when I left. Hesston planted the seed for a passion for science and making a difference in the world. They are values I carry with me and that people recognize in me today.”

Dale and his wife Kay live in a suburb of Chicago. They have two youngadult sons, David and Scott.

Glenn R. Smucker Ac64, ’66

Senior consultant, Smucker Consulting, Milwaulkee, Wis. Education after Hesston: B.A. in sociology from Goshen (Ind.) College, M.A. and Ph.D. in cultural anthropology from The New School for Social Research, New York City.

The life and work of Glenn Smucker is a reminder that science is more than chemistry, biology and physics. Glenn’s work applies social science to solving human and environmental problems. He studies how people relate to their world and designs programs to meet people’s needs while protecting the environment.

Tell us about your career.

I was a community development assistant in Haiti for two years of voluntary service with Mennonite Central Committee. I then worked as a social worker in Chicago.

After two years in Haiti doing fieldwork for my dissertation, I undertook consulting assignments with the U.S. Foreign Assistance Program in Haiti. I then served as country director for a farm forestry program serving thousands of Haitian farmers and later directed a U.S.-funded natural resource management project in Rwanda.

In 1987 I started Smucker Consulting in Milwaukee. I have worked shortterm assignments in Rwanda, the Dominican Republic, Jamaica, Belize, Guyana, Trinidad and Tobago, but mostly in Haiti, including recent efforts to protect biodiversity in remote mountainous areas and evaluate environmental risk in Haiti’s watersheds. I have also studied and devised programs to combat child trafficking and gang violence.

How did Hesston help determine the path your life and career would take?

Hesston promoted a professional life devoted to serving people along with creative self-expression. Hesston also provided opportunities to explore mentoring, leadership roles and how to work effectively with a team.

What are your biggest career accomplishments?

The positive influence I have had on public policy, including shifting large amounts of public resources to serve the poor while protecting the environment.

Significant attention and funding in response to my research on human rights violations.

Working on behalf of the poor and disenfranchised from whom I learned profound lessons and for whom I have tried to make a difference.

Which Hesston College instructors had the biggest influence on you?

I have fond memories of Melva Kauffman’s thoughtful exploration of one’s expectations of life versus the process of realization. Paton Yoder taught me how to write clearly and simply about difficult topics. Clayton Beyler taught me a sense of the social and cultural context of Old Testament writings, and thereby stimulated my interest in cultural anthropology. Lowell Byler taught me discipline in the creative process and a subtle sense of musical interpretation.

Tell us about your family.

I am happily married to Jacqueline, who accompanies me overseas as partner and colleague. We have two adopted children with special needs.

Janelle Yutzie ’97 Blubaugh

General surgeon at Sumner Regional Medical Center, Wellington, Kan. Education after Hesston: B.S. from Friends University in Wichita, Kan., medical school at the University of Kansas in Kansas City, Kan., general surgery residency through the University of Kansas in Wichita.

Former women’s basketball coach and current Vice President of Admissions Joel Kauffman remembers Janelle’s dream to be a surgeon even as an all-region athlete at Hesston, and he’s not surprised by her success.

“Janelle was always very competitive and had a strong work ethic,” said Kauffman.

Biology instructor Hugo Boschmann had Janelle for several classes in her two years at Hesston, and agrees with Kauffman.

“She was a very dedicated student and a go-getter,” said Boschmann. “She was a multi-tasker and it worked.”

Tell us about your current work.

I have been practicing general surgery in Wellington since September 2008, providing a broad range of general surgery services to the community and surrounding area.

What are your biggest career accomplishments?

Getting A’s from Jim (Yoder) and Hugo (Boschmann)! I’m only kind of kidding, their classes were hard! Any time a patient or their family thanks me and is pleased with their care, I feel like I have been part of accomplishing something important.

What activities did you participate in as a Hesston College student?

I played tennis and basketball and was a member of the ’97 basketball team that went to the national tournament in Hagerstown, Md. I was also an RA my sophomore year.

Tell us about your family.

I am married to Jason Blubaugh and we have two children. Our son Ambrose is 4, and our daughter Kuenzie is 3. Outside of work, Jason and I enjoy rodeo and barrel racing, so a lot of our free time is spent on horseback.

How did Hesston help determine the path your life and career choices would take?

My experience at Hesston shaped the course of my life in many ways. The courses I took were difficult, and I was well prepared for my classes during my bachelor’s program and in medical school. I learned the value of understanding information instead of memorizing under the direction of Jim Yoder and Hugo Boschmann. This was an invaluable lesson that provided me with the ability to be successful in academics, my career and my life in general. The most important thing I learned from them is that despite pressures from the outside world, I can be a Christian and a scientist. I don’t have to be one or the other.

The feeling of community I experienced while at Hesston played a part in my decision to practice medicine in a small town. I learned to truly value relationships, the importance of caring for those around me under every circumstance and treating people with respect.

Janelle is the only general surgeon in Wellington, Kan., a town of about 8,000. She enjoys knowing and being able to help the community and surrounding area instead of making them travel the 35 miles to Wichita.

omecoming 2010 was

Sept. 24 to 26. The premier event for the weekend was a Science and Math Symposium featuring 13 alumni speakers. Keynote speakers included Dale Kempf ’75, Gene Zaid ’71 and Glenn R. Smucker ’66. Other events included reunion gatherings, Partner Appreciation Breakfast, Alumni Banquet, Tailgate Picnic and Family Festival and sports events. Emancipation, a group of alumni from 1999 to 2001 provided musical entertainment at the Alumni Banquet.

Another alumni group led by Jeremy Kempf ’00 provided the music for Sunday morning worship. About 400 people participated in the weekend activities and reconnected with former classmates and the college. To see more pictures from the weekend, visit the Hesston College page on Facebook.

College plans dorm renovation

Hesston College plans to renovate the dorm rooms, lounges and infrastructure in Erb central and west beginning May 2011.

The college is continuing a campaign to raise funds for the improvements.

So far, $1.2 million has been raised with another $1.8 to be raised by summer 2011. Excel Industries in Hesston gave a major gift to lead the project in 2008.

An alumni steering committee is being formed to help guide fund-raising efforts and informational events around the country. A student committee will also offer input into the renovations.

Vice President of Student Life Lamar Roth believes updating the space is in line with the values that the college portrays.

“Hesston College has taken great care of its facilities, and the Erb renovation is a continuation of that philosophy and commitment,” he said.

The dorms were built in 1969, and the infrastructure remains in the original form. Painting has been done and carpet replaced as needed throughout the years. Windows and roof have also been replaced. The bathrooms were renovated summer 2010 and the mattresses replaced. Erb east and Kauffman Court dorms were both renovated in 2000.

The impending renovation will improve energy efficiency and student quality of life by replacing rusty pipes and aging equipment and providing new interiors and furniture. Current plans also include lounges to connect central and west wings, a large community lounge to be built above the bookstore and an elevator to make all four floors accessible to everyone.

“The utility of the mods is becoming a challenge,” said Roth. “Individual cooling units and crowded kitchenettes are no longer meeting the needs of the students and are difficult to maintain in a condition that we believe is acceptable.”

New heating and cooling systems will reduce the college’s carbon footprint and utility costs. Improved living and lounge space will give students a nicer and larger area to gather.

“So much positive relationship building happens in these informal areas, and we want to foster those opportunities,” said Roth. “We must keep their space up to date and inviting.”

Hesston College ranked number two In August, Washington Monthly magazine ranked Hesston College number two on its list of two-year colleges in terms of student success and community service.

The Washington Monthly first started releasing rankings in 2005 in response to the annual “Best Colleges” by U.S. News & World Report. Instead of asking the question, “What can college do for you?” the magazine asks, “What can college do for the country?” The purpose of the rankings is to highlight colleges that have a history of spending energy and resources on encouraging students to give back to the community and nation, not just themselves.

We’re grateful for this recognition,” said president Howard Keim. “This is a tribute to the fine work our faculty and staff do day in and day out to create a positive learning experience for our students.”

The rankings for the two-year college category are compiled from The Community College Survey of Student Engagement and graduation rates published by the Department of Education. The CCSSE measures the following benchmarks: active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student-faculty interaction and support for learners. Hesston most recently conducted the survey in 2009. The results for all of the benchmarks improved from the 2007 survey to 2009. 663 institutions of varying size across 48 states with student populations as large as 15,000 or more participated in the 2009 CCSSE. Hesston College’s Vice President of Aacademics Sandra Zerger is excited that the effort to raise the results from the 2007 survey to 2009 is paying off in a tangible way.

“Assessment isn’t viewed as a dirty word here,” Zerger said. “We conduct these surveys to highlight the areas that we are doing well in and to see where we need to make improvements. Then we find ways to improve in those areas.”

Zerger has consciously worked with the faculty to get away from the “sage on the stage” method of classroom teaching, focusing instead on collaborative and hands-on learning among students.

“Students learn more when they are able to process the information with each other, whether it is through collaborative projects or classroom discussion,” said Zerger.

It has become increasingly clear that our world needs education, for religion without education leads to fanaticism.

It has become increasingly clear that our world needs its education tempered with Christianity, for education without a strong and prevailing sense of the transcendent leads to cynicism and hopelessness.

It has become increasingly clear that our world needs its education and Christianity in the context of community, for neither religion nor education are effective unless firmly constituted in community.

Hesston College is a place where Anabaptist Christianity and quality education are effectively integrated in nurturing community.

This college is not perfect, but I know of no other place that has assembled such a gifted and excellent staff dedicated to just that mission: effective education in the union of Anabaptism and nurturing community. Year after year, I have witnessed positive growth and transformations in the lives of a continuous procession of students.

If there is hope for the future of the church and of humanity, it must come from people who have truly experienced – been immersed in – this kind of education. So where better to invest in our collective futures and the future of our world than in the effective and continuing future of Hesston College?

Local supporters establish new scholarship fund

Marilyn (Stauffer) and John F. Murray enjoy connecting with students through on-campus events. The scholarship they established in honor of Marilyn’s parents will give them a new way to build relationships with students.

When John F. and Marilyn (Stauffer) Murray scheduled an appointment with a financial planner, their main goal was to ensure they were being financially responsible in their retirement. But when they discovered they could cover their living costs and still have a little cushion, they decided to do something meaningful with the extra funds.

That’s how the Uriah and Edna (Troyer) Stauffer Scholarship was established. The scholarship was named in honor of Marilyn’s parents, who lived and worked in the Milford, Neb., area.

Though neither Uriah nor Edna attended Hesston College, several of their descendents did including Marilyn (Stauffer) Murray, C. David ’66, John C. Murray ’81, John N. Murray ’10 and current freshman Joel Murray.

Since moving to Hesston in 2008, John F. and Marilyn have attended college events and have seen firsthand the effect that Hesston College has on students. They established the scholarship as a way to help students who might not otherwise attend Hesston College.

“We want to have an influence beyond ourselves,” said John. “Hesston College offers such a unique experience that many students miss out on because they think public education is cheaper, which isn’t always the case.”

By naming the scholarship in her parents’ honor, Marilyn also hopes to reconnect with families from Milford. Students from the Mennonite churches in Milford are targeted as recipients for the scholarship. Students studying business or finance will also receive consideration.

“Education and friendships are more important than the dollar sign,” said Marilyn. “Hesston College provides high quality in both. I hope having this scholarship and others like it will encourage more students to consider Hesston College.”

Cross country, volume II As Kenny Graber’s size 11½ New Balances sped across the Baldwin City (Kan.) Golf Course on Saturday, Sept. 4, a well-trained ear could have picked up the sound of applause ascending from Hesston College constituents coast to coast.

Graber was one of 12 student athletes running that morning, officially marking Hesston College’s reintroduction of cross country. It was the late 1970s the last time runners laced up their shoes for the Larks.

Vice President of Student Life Lamar Roth indicated several factors that made the timing seem right to resurrect the program, including the fact that running clubs have existed off and on over the years.

“Cross country seems to be a good fit within the culture of Hesston College,” Roth said. “We have a good history of cross country here, and with Gerry Sieber returning to coach the group, we expect the transition to be a smooth one.”

More than 30 years have passed since Sieber and two of his runners boarded a Hesston College plane en route to Champaign, Ill., to compete in the NJCAA national meet. Loretta (Stauffer) ’80 Esh, a nursing alumna, was on that plane and remembers her Hesston days fondly.

“Thinking back to competing at Hesston brings back good memories of my college experience,” Esh said. “A great friendship was built with Joyce (Brubaker) ’79 Herr, my running partner. We spent many enjoyable and, at times, exhausting hours running the flat, graveled roads on the outskirts of Hesston.”

Esh, who now works as a nurse in Lancaster County, Pa., experienced a balance between relationships, academics and athletics that became an intricate part of her time at Hesston. Like many other student athletes, these areas seemed to intertwine, forming a nurturing and well-rounded period in her life.

“Preparing for competition took discipline, energy and time, much the same as preparing for tests and completing requirements toward a career did,” Esh continued. “I would highly recommend running at Hesston College to anyone.”

Examining their experience on campus and with athletics, both Esh and Graber find common themes.

“One similarity between academics and cross country is that the results you see are tied to the effort and preparation you put forth,” Graber said. “The season is off to a good start, and our team has a lot of potential. My teammates are great, and that makes the experience enjoyable.”

Sieber has relished rediscovering his role as a mentor and motivator.

“It’s hard to believe we’ve only been together a short while,” Sieber said.

“Our kids enjoy each other’s company, and our team chemistry has been tremendous. The camaraderie and work ethic that has developed has been fun to watch.”

Hesston College closed the 2009-10 fiscal year in the black for the fifth consecutive year. Enrollment numbers, budget management and meeting the annual fund goal contributed to the success. “We are grateful to our board for its leadership, our faculty and staff for their dedication and quality work, and to congregations, alumni, friends and Partners who invest in the education of Hesston College students,” said President Howard Keim.

Summer 2010 was a time for renovations and updates on campus. In addition to the bathroom renovations in Erb central and west, the lounge area in Kauffman Court had a small apartment converted into a larger one for a second resident director. The tennis courts were resurfaced. Charles Hall classroom 1 became a second nursing simulation lab. The dining hall in Bontrager Student Center received new tile and carpet, and a shop area behind Laban Peachey Center was turned into a lab space for Disaster Management students.

Sharp will do the research and writing at Hesston while continuing to teach.

Father, daughter team up to write reconciliation book International peacebuilder John Paul Lederach ’75 and his daughter Angie Lederach ’04 collaborated to write a book on social healing and reconciliation, When Blood and Bones Cry Out: Journeys Through the Soundscape of Healing and Reconciliation, released March 2010.

The Lederachs explore healing as ongoing in the midst of continuing violence in communities.They present stories from centers of violence around the world and illustrate how sound, including vibration and lyrics, acts as a healing agent.

John Paul is professor of international peacebuilding at Notre Dame’s Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies in Notre Dame, Ind., and has been involved as a mediator for conflicts in many locations including Northern Ireland, Somalia, Nicaragua, Colombia and Nepal. He is also the founder of Eastern Mennonite University’s (Harrisonburg, Va.) Conflict Transformation Program and its associated Center for Justice and Peacebuilding.

Angie is a Notre Dame peace studies graduate. She works with immigration policy at the Center for Public Policy Studies in Boulder, Colo.

Graduates reunite after 38 years In May 2010,Tim Detweiler, Dan Diener, Alvaro Fernandez, Nick King and Steve Ramer, all 1972 graduates, met at Crooked Creek Christian Camp in Washington, Iowa, for a weekend of reminiscing, personal sharing, worship and celebration.

In June of 1972, about 10 days after their graduation from Hesston, the five left in a 1967 Ford van for Mennonite World Conference in Curitiba, Brazil.The trip lasted seven months and covered 30,000 miles and 16 countries as the men visited Mennonites across Latin America, deepened their individual beliefs and faith, and learned firsthand about interpersonal relationships and conflict management.

Their reunion in May was the first time they had all been together in 38 years.They credit the trip and lifelong friendship to Hesston College for providing a safe place to explore their faith development.

Sandra van Slooten ’98, The Netherlands, completed a two-year study program in organic and biodynamic agriculture. In July 2010, Sandra participated in the Mennonite World Conference in Paraguay, and subsequently spent eight months in Brazil and Uruguay working as a volunteer on organic farms. She now works full time at a small organic farm.

Math-Science Division announces new scholarship The Math-Science Division at Hesston College has a history of providing students a strong academic background preparing them for continued study and completion of professional degrees. Thirteen of our distinguished alumni made presentations at this fall’s homecoming event, sharing about the work they have been called to do and how Hesston College assisted their journey.

Homecoming Weekend 2010 also provided an opportunity to announce the new Math-Science Scholarship Endowment Fund. The faculty in the division had been talking about establishing a scholarship for quite some time and recently received the seed money from Lorna Harder’s family. Their gracious gift will help recognize prospective and returning students who have a passion and dedication for a major in science or math.

Many past and current faculty members who have taught classes in the areas of biology, chemistry, physics and mathematics have contributed to student success. This scholarship fund also honors the contributions these faculty members have made to the students’ learning and experiences.

We are very excited about establishing this scholarship fund and are hopeful that this will provide many future students the opportunities to pursue their interests in fields of science and math. ­ —Nelson Kilmer

Habegger family starts Math-Science Scholarship Last fall Loris Habegger, our Dad, died, having outlived Evelyn, our Mom, by just two years. Both our parents lived long and productive lives. They chose to live modestly, spending little, saving and investing, but always giving too. Over the years, local community agencies as well as the Mennonite church and its institutions were beneficiaries of their generosity. During his later years, Dad commented that he and Mom were thankful for continued opportunities to give, to invest in a future that extended beyond them. Both had long ago learned that the return gifts of joy and purposefulness were the best part of giving. In their will, our parents chose “Charity” as another child, requesting that this child receive an equal share of their estate. When queried on specific causes, Dad had simply said, “I trust you to decide.”

Thus my brothers and I found ourselves sitting in the warm sunshine on an early November day, deciding for our sister, Charity. Knowing how our parents valued higher education, gifts to Mennonite colleges were an assumption.

Somewhere in the conversation, I described the dream for a Math-Science scholarship at Hesston College. Since neither of my brothers is personally familiar with Hesston College, I was unsure of their response. Without missing a beat and almost simultaneously, they said yes. Both agreed that providing seed money for a Math-Science scholarship fund would be the best way possible to honor our parents’ ongoing commitment to scholarship funding.

Now, nearly a year after that November conversation, the Math-Science Scholarship Endowment Fund is a reality. Thank you Mom and Dad, and thank you, Arman and Richard, for helping make it happen! ­—Lorna Habegger Harder (for Arman J. Habegger and Richard W. Habegger)
