Mission Statement

Abraham Joshua Heschel Day School, a community Jewish day school, provides a rich dual-curricular education that encourages independent and critical thinking, lifelong learning, self-awareness, and compassion.

In partnership with our families, we inspire our students to become active, dedicated, ethical, and informed citizens and leaders who are committed to Israel and the vitality of the Jewish people.

To our next 50….

We had an incredible year filled with celebration - celebrating being back on campus, celebrating our accomplishments, and celebrating 50 outstanding years of Heschel! Our 50th Gala was the culmination of a year of deeply connecting with our entire community again, whether current parents, grandparents, students, and faculty & staff, or reconnecting with alumni, past parents, past grandparents, past faculty & staff, and so many founding families. It was truly magical to have a glowing tent with over 400 people here on campus, many of whom were part of the founding of this great school that so many of us now call home. We heard stories, saw pictures and felt what Heschel means to so many, and we can only hope those feelings continue into our next 50 years. We are standing on the shoulders of giants who could only dream what Heschel would become. It was particularly meaningful to be surrounded by family, friends, Board Members, and colleagues, who have supported us along every step of our journey at Heschel.

This past year was not all easy though. Our administration and staff navigated the rapidly changing conditions of COVID-19 while keeping the school in-person for the entire year. It is impossible to overstate the size of that task or how well it was done. We felt proud of our students who showed resilience and concern for their families and community by doing what was asked of them to maintain their safety and the safety of others.

Your support in the past year has been an invaluable lifeline for students and families yearning to be together. At Heschel we pride ourselves on not only the academic home of our students but the spiritual home and center of Jewish life for many of our family members. Let’s take a look at the successes of last year, but know it is only the beginning as we head into the next 50…

As a Heschel parent for the past 11 years, it has been such a pleasure to serve as the Parent Organization (PO) President. My husband, Stephen (’88) is a Heschel alum, and along with our four children, Sophie (’20) Ezra (‘22), Maya (‘23) and Lila (‘25) we are grateful for the Heschel community, our home away from home!

Despite a year of uncertainties, the PO coordinated over 15 amazing events, some virtually and by second semester, in person! In partnership and with the support of the amazing Heschel staff, Heschel’s veteran and new parent volunteers accomplished a wealth of events.

The PO strives to provide meaningful, fun and engaging opportunities for all levels of community and volunteer participation!

• ● Welcomed and oriented new families

• ● Organized apples and honey for distribution to the students and staff to celebrate Rosh Hashanah

• ● Had a successful online holiday boutique

• ● Greeted and photographed guests on Generation’s Day

• ● Organized BINGO night

• ● Sorted lost and found

• ● Created and sold HeschelWear that faculty, students and parents wore loud and proud

• ● Showered the Heschel staff with appeciation (sharing food and love)

• ● Baked and shared words of prayer and wisdom at two challah bakes, one virtually and one in person

• ● Led the students in making Mishloach Manot for Holocaust survivors

• ● Supported the planning and volunteer coordinating of the Purim Carnival

• ● Engaged the community in meaningful community service activities at Mitzvah Day

• ● Hosted parent fun nights

• ● Hiked together

• ● Organized and sold books at the Book Fair

• ● Supported and comforted families in uncertain times by spreading a little “sunshine” their way

• ● Organized a Girls Night Out game night and schmooze fest

• ● Collected and donated fruit to MEND (Meet Each Need with Dignity) Food Pantry at the Shavout Fruit Drive

I am overjoyed at what we accomplished and am looking forward to what this next school year can bring. I am confident that with the support of the parent volunteers, the faculty, the staff, and the board, that there are meaningful and fun engagement opportunities for all levels of family and parent volunteer participation!

Our 50th Gala was a celebration of the last 50 years and the vision of the individuals who created and shaped Heschel into the school it is today. With over 400 guests in our glowing tent on our field, each one part of the Heschel story, we took a walk down memory lane.

The videos highlighted the founding families and their initial ideas of what Heschel could be, it highlighted the faculty and staff who are the heart and soul of Heschel, and it highlighted our Head of School, Larry Kligman, for his tremendous contributions to Heschel.

It was a night to remember!
