In order to acknowledge the important connection to country of the Butchulla people, the Department of National Parks, Recreation, Sport and Racing’s (NPRSR) and Queensland Parks and Wildlife Service (QPWS) urges visitors to treat the country they are travelling through with respect and care. Butchulla people want their messages of care and respect for the land to reach all people visiting the island. As visitors explore K'gari (Fraser Island), they will see signs carrying a ‘welcome to country’ message from the Butchulla

A British ship captain
•Captain William Edwardson navigated the passage from Tin Can Bay to Hervey Bay, determining that the Great Sandy Peninsula was an Island and not apart of the main land
•A new name was given to the island in 1836 after the survivors of a shipwreck of the ‘Stirling Castle’ found their way ashore and the death of Captain James Fraser while on the island.
•In 1863 the first Kauri logs were punted to the mills at Maryborough and Dundathu.
•Red Satinay was used around the world, including sidings on the Suez Canal and the docks in London. It was also used locally on the Urangan Jetty, with the bark left intact for protection against marine borers
•Marloo was shipwrecked on Orchid Beach in 1914
•Maheno beached north of Happy Valley in 1935
•Sand mining leases were first granted in 1950 and continued until 1977 by the High Court of Australia
•A fine layer of decomposing vegetation seals the basins formed by the sand dunes and creates its many perched lakes, as much as 70 metres above sea level
I fly 7000 miles non stop
Black-tailed godwit they are the only birds known to fly more than 7,000 miles nonstop with no breaks for water or sleep. They leave Alaska in October and head straight for the Ocean. Although they are land birds, and cannot fish or rest on the sea. Many of them are young, and have never done this before. No other bird can do what they do. A disturbance is classified as any action that interrupts the breeding, feeding or resting of shorebirds. You can prevent shorebird disturbance by keeping domestic animals under control and well away from them. Every time shorebirds are forced to take flight, they burn vital energy that they need for travel. Avoid driving or operating all forms of vehicles near these species.
K’gari was renamed Fraser Island after a British ship captain, James Fraser and his wife Eliza, were stranded on the island after their ship, The Stirling Castle struck a coral reef north of the island in 1836. Many survivors escaped onto the island. Captain Fraser never made it off the island. Controversy surrounds his death. Eliza, a Scottish woman, managed to integrate into the indigenous society and survived for many weeks among them, until she was eventually rescued near Lake Cootharaba on Noosa North Shore. Eliza chose to publish her accounts of the shipwreck upon returning to England. The captain’s wife accused the Aboriginal people of murdering him. While other surviving crew members stated that the captain died from natural causes. To this day, his death is still a source of myth and legend. Eliza enjoyed much sympathy. This began to wane, however, when her accounts of the ordeal became more random and increasingly embellished. She became a minor media celebrity, and her story grew even wilder. In 1976 Australian adventure drama film, ‘Eliza Fraser’, starring Susannah York, Trevor Howard, Noel Ferrier & John Castle was the first Australian film with a big-budget. In 1947, Sidney Nolan created a series of paintings, “Nolan’s Eliza Fraser". One of the works was reproduced on the cover of the important Australian novel ‘A Fringe of Leaves’, written by Patrick White. Also using the Fraser name was The Fraser Commando School (FCS). Between October 1943 & August 1945 it functioned as an important part of Australia’s Special Operations programme during World War II. The site is located on the west side of K’gari about 1.6km south of Kingsher Bay Resort and Village. Most of the main camp site is located north of Beerilbee Creek. All building materials and stores were transported by army barges from the Urangan pier. In all, a total of 909 students where train by the time FCS ceased 1945. Pronounced "gurri", the World Heritage Committee formally renamed the heritage-listed island on 19th Sept 2021, by the then Queensland Labor Government.

The Pier is an iconic link to Hervey Bay's past. The true story of Easter
The Easter festival, the oldest and most important festival in the Christian calendar, culminates in the celebration that is Easter Sunday, which today is a time when most of us get together with our families, share a meal and - of course - eat lots of chocolate! Most people know that it was on this day that Jesus was said to come to life after being crucified, visiting his friends and followers once more. At Easter time Christians remember the last week of Jesus' life, or ‘Holy Week'. It signals the end of Lent, the traditional time of fasting in the Christian calendar.
Easter is the day when we celebrate Jesus Christ rising from the dead. Jesus is the Son of God and heroically gave His life to die for our sins.
On the third day after He died -- the day we now celebrate as Easter Sunday -- His friends went to His grave, and found that He had risen from the dead. They saw an angel who told them, “Don't be afraid! I know you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. He isn't here! He has been raised from the dead, just as He said it would happen." Jesus rose from the dead on Easter Sunday; now He offers to you the gift of eternal life and forgiveness of sins.
This is the true story of Easter, and how it can change your life. Christians today often commemorate Good Friday by attending a service, where Jesus' last hours on earth are retraced. As Good Friday is seen as a day of mourning, services are very solemn; churches are left unadorned with flowers or similar decorations, and in some churches pictures and statues are covered over

Instead of refined sugar, use organic agave nectar, raw cane sugar or locally grown raw honey. Eliminate soft drinks from your diet. They provide zero nutritional benefits. Drink a lot of purified water. Avoid "energy drinks" and store bought "fruit flavoured" juices.
Try to eat only all-natural organic sweets containing natural sugars no more than 3 times per week. Relieve sugar cravings by eating fresh fruit.
Try cleansing your colon regularly with a high quality oxygen-based colon cleanser to reduce the acidic environment in the bowel and also the excessive fermentation of sugars. Make your own soft drinks using equal parts fruit juice and water. Drink unsweetened herbal tea with lemon, lime or fresh mint to add flavour.

For little birds to hide
Welcoming entrance gardens beside Boat Harbour Drive, immaculate mowed parks and play grounds, are a credit to all involved, but special effort should be made to provide suitable habitat where our beautiful little birds such as Fairywrens, Finches and Scrubwrens etc, could be enjoyed also. They all require prickly, tangled undergrowth, (such as Lantana), for protection from introduced cats, foxes and their other natural predators. Also well suitable grasses for seed for at least three species of Finch. So property owners & council employees, before you slash, mow or spray any area that is not required as a lawn or garden, just visualise how interesting it could be to have a patch, that may look just a little untidy to some people, but will be suitable for little birds to hide, nest and feed in. You can place a sign displaying "left for Wildlife" to show it is a planned section – not just an untidy area. Maybe a bird-bath nearby where you can expect to see little birds safely drink and bathe. Wonderful relaxation without a lot of maintenance! Hervey Bay is a noted bird-watch area and visitors come from around the world and interstate just to see them. You will feel good to know you have done your bit. Birdwatchers meet regularly.

For the historically minded
Mary Ann Steam Train operates Thursday (market day) and last Sunday of each month
Maryborough, named after the wife of Governor Fitzroy, was settled 1847. It was a major immigration port into Australia and is one of Queensland’s oldest cities. It is just an easy 20 minute drive from Hervey Bay and is commonly referred to as the Heritage City. Its streets are lined with beautifully restored Queenslanders and civic buildings and it’s well worth a visit for the historically minded, or the camera buff with plenty of unique and historical architecture to photograph. Stroll through the historical Wharf Street precinct, offering a glimpse into life in a busy immigration port. Some of the historical attractions include: The Military and Colonial Museum, the old Post Office Hotel and Criterion Hotel, Customs House Interpretive Centre, Bond Store Museum and Customs Residence Cellar Door
A historic coal mining town
Howard is situated beside the Bruce Highway, about 34km north west of Hervey Bay and 20km north of Maryborough. William Howard travelled through the area in 1857 to go on and discover the rich Isis scrub (Childers). He later owned mining leases in the area. At one stage about 25% of Queensland coal was raised in the district. Citrus growing soon took over from timber getting as the district's second industry after coal. Lenthalls Dam off the Bruce Highway near Howard is a fishing and boating paradise. It's a great place for the whole family and worthwhile if you are keen on freshwater fishing. A fishing permit is required. The area which has Picnic Races are a must to see annually in October. The 6 furlong race track at Torbanlea was first created in 1890 as a half mile track that had no rails, dodging trees and stumps along the way. The local climate recognised as Australia's most liveable, it provides a relaxed atmosphere and a welcoming community spirit that’s perfect for newcomers.

Childers, a rural town, is 60 km west of Hervey Bay and on the Bruce Highway north-west of Maryborough. There are 23 buildings in Churchill Street that are listed on the Queensland Heritage Register. The towns Visitor Centre is located in the Palace Building which was destroyed by a fire in 2000 and subsequently rebuilt in honour of the 15 backpackers who died in the fire upstairs. A single A4 Heritage walk sheet which combines a map of the town (most of the historic buildings are located on Churchill Street) is available to pick up & upstairs is an Art Gallery. Trees that line the main street or Bruce Hwy are Brazilian Leopard Trees. As a National Trust Town, it provides opportunities for visitors to explore the regions interesting past. It’s well worth a stop in whilst travelling on your way

20% reduction in rego costs
The reduction applies to new registrations and renewals for eligible vehicles that expire in the 12 month period between 16 September 2024 and 15 September 2025. Every payment you make during the 12-month period will be eligible for the reduction - it doesn't matter whether your registration term is 1, 3, 6 or 12 months.
The 20% reduction applies to:
Light vehicles*, including cars, light commercial vehicles, motorcycles and trailers. All motorised caravans and motorhomes. (no weight limits) All special interest & farm plate vehicles, conditionally registered vehicles, dealer plate registration fees and all vehicle purposes of use for light vehicles – such as private, commercial, dealer, taxi.
*Vehicles that weigh under 4.5 tonnes
Have more than 1 vehicle?
All eligible vehicle registrations in your name will receive the reduction.
Does your vehicle already have a concession?
Eligible vehicles will still receive a discount on their vehicle's registration. First, they take the standard registration fee and trafc improvement fee (TIF) and reduce it by 20%. Then, apply the relevant concession to the new discounted standard registration fee component.
Note: concessions don't apply to the TIF
The reduction does not apply to:
Heavy vehicles that weigh over 4.5 tonnes* (go to the National Transport Commission for more information), recreational and commercial boats.*Vehicle weight is either gross vehicle mass (GVM) or aggregated trailer mass (ATM)
Don't risk your tow
First, make sure you have a tow bar that is up to the job! If you can afford it, it's worth paying for a professional installation. Make sure you're familiar with any laws that apply, especially if you are travelling abroad. In particular, make sure you know the speed limits. In some countries you need a separate warning light fitted in the car to show that the caravan direction indicator lights are working.
* Coping with the load - are the engine, brakes, tyres and suspension up to the job?
* Trailer or tow bar weights - check your cars handbook for the maximum weights allowed
* Rear view - make sure you can see behind the caravan using the cars mirrors. Extending side mirrors can be fitted to most cars
* Check tyre pressures - unless you are towing a light, unladen trailer, the car tyres should be inflated to full load pressures (check your cars handbook). Check the caravan tyre pressures are correct too
* Headlight set up - check the aim with the caravan attached, and have it adjusted if necessary. Many cars these days have an adjuster on the dashboard
* Caravan lights - the extra load on the flasher circuit may cause the indicators to flash too slowly, so you may need a heavy duty flasher unit. Check brake, side and number plate lights
* Loading the caravan - refer to the manufacturers recommendations. As a general rule, distribute the weight with the heaviest items as near as possible to the caravan axle. Secure all heavy items so they can't move Car manufacturers usually specify an optimum noseweight for a caravan when loaded. If necessary, move the load to get as close as possible to the recommended noseweight and do not exceed it
* Engine - don't put unnecessary strain on the engine by trying to tow an unsuitably heavy load. The extra load on an engine when towing may mean that the cooling system is no longer adequate - you may be able to have modified cooling system components (a larger radiator, etc ) fitted to cope with this problem if you tow regularly
* Suspension - towing puts extra strain on a cars suspension components and can affect the handling of a car. Heavy duty rear suspension components are available for most cars to enable to cope with towing
* Reversing - there are some very simple rules to follow. It may seem to be a difficult concept to grasp at first, but instead of being able to turn your car steering wheel in the direction that you want your trailer/caravan to go, you must turn it in the opposite direction. It might take a little time to master this technique, especially when reversing round a corner When reversing in a straight line, the easiest way to remember what to do is to steer towards the towing mirror in which the trailer or caravan appears
