WHEN we launched the Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards a decade ago through my old newspaper, the Hervey Bay Independent, we had no idea how big it would become.
In a time when social media was really in its infancy, the ambitious project reached more than 90,000 people, with over 1,200 comments, 2,000 likes and 400 shares.
What was very obvious from the outset was the desire for local people to put their hands up and say, ‘look at this business or look at this person, they are doing amazing work’.
Customers don’t go to award nights, and judging panels simply cannot be across every great business. That’s why the People’s Choice Awards are so unique.
Around the time of the introduction of e-Scooters, and as time went on, much was discussed in the Letters to The Editor, when rules and fines were introduced with regards their use and non compliance, especially related to many of the privately owned e Scooters. What a waste of time!
Others and myself, have seen non compliance all the time, even after the hefty fines have been introduced related to lack of helmets more than
one person on a scooter, dangerous riding and lack of adherence to road rules, and speeding scooters that have been doctored, with new chips and stronger batteries, to mention a few.
So the council is going to focus on education and training, rather than behaviour. Who is kidding who?
I am a sceptic of this statement, especially after 45 yrs of teaching, with eight of them running the GAP Program.
Hervey Bay. Who is the “Brainwave” coming up with these problem solving ideas.
The main offenders are some
privately owned scooters, and many of their owners who don’t give a dam, because they are young, and their parents turn a blind eye, until there is an accident, and then we hear what a wonderful person they were.
The same old story. Many people I know of, don’t use the walk way on the Esplanade anymore because of fast moving, privately owned scooters.
Bikes don’t concern them, as the majority of riders ring their bell, to warn when approaching from behind. Privately owned Scooters should all be registered, and
Last time around, 2,600 votes were cast via Facebook, 600 people voted via SMS, 490 voted via email, and 450 sent in hard copy voting forms. Yowsers .. we think you really loved it!
To celebrate that incredible response, we wanted to ensure a whole new group of residents could recognise their favourite businesses and business people.
The 2023 Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards is back for its 10th Anniversary.
On pages 20 and 21 of this issue, you can find all of the details about the many ways to nominate your local business champions. There is no voting just yet – you just need to nominate.
There are a host of new awards across the
at the same time checked for legal compliance. Maybe the Bin Police could do this!
All privately owned scooters should be registered and compliant with the restrictions they are supposed to have.

on these lakes, now, it is very unappealing to see how these pest weeds are overtaking almost every water way in our city.
Gympie Council appear to have a system of adequately managed lakes at both entrances to the city. Perhaps some conversation between authorities might help?
Please do something before we have chocked them totally.
The birds seem to have to battle through what was once pristine water, and don’t see the fish splashing in them as much anymore. Can we get some action on
this please or at least some answers on what future plans there are to manage this problem?
I, and many of my lakeside neighbours look forward to some positive action or at least some answers, to save our lakes and waterways before they are depleted of birds and fish altogether. Thank you,
Christene Hodgson - Eli WatersI refer to article written recently by Alan Host and agree with everything he has
said. I live at the beginning of Eli Waters and every single night the hoons are screaming up and Dow HVB/MryBro road, doing burnouts at the top of Islander Road, doing handbrake starts at the lights and then the tyres squeal, the engine screams and the take off, obviously way above the speed limit.
One of the guys has a car that loudly back fires constantly.
Several of us have written to Council and attended council, who advised us it was not their jurisdiction.
I have called the Hoon line, to be told to call the local police, who in turn asked me to go out and try and get a number plate!!!
This at 11.15pm. I have recorded the noise and taken it, with neighbours, to the police who advised that they could do nothing, and know about the problem.
When we asked for an un marked car to be left, we were told they could not do it “for privacy concerns”….but noted a speed camera car parked on MB road outside golf club the other day.
We even wrote to the chief of police… without reply.
This problem has not just been going on for days, weeks or months, but now for years…..at the end of our tether, I put forward this
information to Adrian Tantari MP. No reply to date!
They should do here what they do in the US. Trash the cars when they are caught!!
Thanks for voicing this Alan Host.

Changes are afoot in Fraser Coast Regional Council with the recent resignation of Councillor Darren Everard and of course there is an opportunity for us all to have our say when we come to the March 2024 local council elections.
I wish Councillor Everard well in his future endeavours and thank him for his many contributions to our community.
As a woman, mother of two daughters and long term resident of the Fraser Coast it is quite disconcerting to see the lack of gender equity in our local council.
Despite just over half (51.1%) of the Fraser Coast region being female only 9% of our current Councillors are women.
Just one female Councillor out of 11 does not bode well for gender equity and diverse representation.
We are falling a long way short compared to
neighbouring councils.
Bundaberg Regional Council in comparison has 27.3% female representation, Gladstone Regional Council and Gympie Regional Council each having 22.2% female representation.
Brisbane City Council on the other hand has 60% female representation.
The lack of diversity and gender equity on Fraser Coast Regional Council is not for lack of credible, capable female candidates, rather there is lack of opportunity and support for women who want to represent their community.
It’s important that we all consider what kind of community we are creating and the kind of leaders we are enabling to make decisions on our behalf.
Current Councillors have an opportunity soon to elect a replacement for Councillor Everard and Fraser Coast residents have an opportunity to vote for their division Councillors in March 2024. Will we see more diverse representation and gender equity on Council going forward?
I sure hope so, I for one am tired of the lack of progress and equity this Council consistently demonstrates.

Calling all theatre lovers! Z-PAC Theatre is holding auditions for two upcoming One Act Plays, CHOOK CHOOK by Fiona Farrell and SNAGGED by Robert Kronk. Directed by theatre veteran Judith La Forest who directed the highly acclaimed One Flew Over The Cuckoo’s Nest. Snagged is a poignant and funny story about coming of age, discovering who you are, and vegetarian sausages. Sam, the butcher’s daughter in a small Australian country
town, is a closet vegetarian who plans to get to the city as soon as possible until she meets Josh, who has done the unthinkable and moved back home.
Chook Chook is a funny, satirical look at the various ways we can respond to the knowledge of confinement - political, emotional, and traditional. It’s a story about four female chickens in a shed but with a human moral issue.
Battery hens Valmai, Crissy, Georgia and Bron refer to their cages as ‘compartments’ and eat the same food day
after day, under the same continuous ‘sun’ (fluorescent light).
Rehearsals are scheduled for Saturdays 11am – 2pm; Tuesdays and Wednesdays 6.30 - 9pm from 29 August. There are nine performances over three weekends from 24 November to 10 December. Auditions are Saturday 26 August, from 11am to 2pm at Z-PAC Theatre, 15 Zephyr St, Scarness.

THE HERVEY Bay Advertiser is proud to launch the 10th Anniversary of the hugely successful reward and recognition program for local businesses with the return of the Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards.
Unlike traditional business award concepts, which require small local businesses to fill out lengthy submissions and invest hundreds of dollars for long award night events, these awards are judged and voted on by customers - the real judges of great business.
Hervey Bay Advertiser General Manager Darren Bosley was excited about the return of this great initiative.
“In the past, this program has attracted in excess of 350 individual business nominations and reached over 90,000 people on social media. It was pioneered by the Hervey Bay Independent in 2013, and we are very excited to be bringing it back. Customers are the best judges of the strengths and points of difference for a business, and their opinions play a significant role in recognising the region’s best,” he said.
“The Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards is a great concept that allows for increased participation, wider category inclusion and significant promotional opportunities for all nominees.”
State Member for Hervey Bay, Adrian Tantari was glowing in his support for the PCA project.
“What makes this concept so very unique is the power of the people. Every business that is nominated has the option to accept as a finalist and go through to public voting.”
Hervey Bay Advertiser publisher Malcolm Quinn explained the uniqueness of the program.
“There is no capping on
the number of finalists per category, who can then progress to public voting.
It’s not about some panel of judges deciding who should progress past nomination and who shouldn’t. It’s about the customers,” Mr Quinn said.
“The Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards is all about inclusiveness and opening up greater opportunities for local operators to be recognised for the fantastic work they do, growing our region.”
To find out more about the Fraser Coast Business and Tourism People’s Choice Awards – see the double spread on pages 20 and 21 of today’s edition. Nominations are open now.
A GROUND-BREAKING new initiative aimed at empowering young minds is coming to The Neighbourhood Hive, HBNC’s Learning and Innovation hub.
HBNC has partnered with Young Change Agents to train 10 local teachers, social workers and youth officers to bring the $20 Boss Program to the Fraser Coast.
The $20 Boss program, developed by Foundation for Young Australians, is an international entrepreneurial program for young people, helping them to gain the skills needed to develop a small business.
Run over 10 weeks from The Neighbourhood Hive’s newly established Hustle Hub, $20 Boss is open to 12 to 17-year-olds with curious and entrepreneurial minds, who want to turn their idea into the next big thing for the Fraser Coast.
A program for those 18 years and over will also be offered under HBNC’s Community Access Program (CAP).
Tanya Stevenson, HBNC CEO, said the program would culminate in an opportunity to sell and promote wares at the inaugural Youth & Entrepreneurs Market, held at the October, November and
December Food & Groove events.
“The Youth Entrepreneurs Hustle Hub is designed to foster a spirit of creativity, innovation, and entrepreneurship among young individuals who aspire to become future business leaders,” Tanya said.
“The $20 Boss program provides participating young people with a $20 start-up fund to transform their unique business ideas into reality.
“The program not only helps them understand the basics of budgeting, marketing, and sales but also instils in them valuable life skills such as problemsolving, communication, and teamwork.”
Gena Davis, $20 Boss Facilitator, said the program had plenty to offer, to get young people started in the right direction.
“As part of the program,
these young entrepreneurs will receive mentorship and guidance from experienced business professionals and mentors who are passionate about empowering the next generation of leaders,” Tanya said.
“This invaluable support system will nurture their ideas and help them overcome any challenges they may face during the process.”

EARLIER this month around twenty Freemasons and their wives/partners attended a coffee morning hosted at the Hervey Bay Special School in Frangipanni Avenue, Scarness. Their purpose was not only to enjoy a social gathering with coffee and cake, a service provided by the school’s Coffee Shop every Friday, but to present a donation to the school.
The local Masonic Lodges of Hervey Bay Daylight and Munduberra-Burnett pooled their resources to provide the funds for this latest donation being for new outdoor tables for the coffee shop. New tables were needed as the old ones were small, unwieldy and too heavy for the students and staff to move around. The new tables are much sturdier, easier to manoeuvre and can accommodate more customers.
The Masonic Lodges raises funds in a variety of ways but in this instance predominantly by running sausage sizzle stalls. They often operate stalls at Harvey Norman and Bunnings to name a couple.
Hervey Bay Daylight Lodge Worshipful Master, Derek Mayne, praised the assembled students for a wonderful morning. Specialist Education
Teacher Ms. Jessica Roberts was presented with the cheque for the funds raised to purchase the tables and thanked the young staff for their hard work.
A good morning was had by all.

Charity is a central principle of Freemasonry, for example, in the 2021 - 2022 financial year Queensland Freemasonry donated $5.7 million to deserving causes.
Coffee mornings are held at the Hervey Bay Special School every Friday morning during the school term until 11am. The staff consists of Specialist Teachers and students who work in the kitchen to gain life skills and experience, often moving on to employment in the commercial food industry.
THE 2023 Dunga Derby has completed it’s 9th year with another record year of fundraising. This year, over $567,307 was raised to support local families affected by lifelimiting medical conditions and/or whose lives have been disrupted by detrimental circumstances beyond their control.
Here is a brief summary of their successful journey:
Day 1:The adventure starts in the cool, crisp early hours of Thursday morning at the Hervey Bay RSL.
Hitting the first dirt track and heading north that finished the day at the picturesque stockyards of The Caves, Rockhampton with a cold drink and many laughs.
Day 2: The famous pace
car “Road Hog” directed the roads northwest, the route incorporates some activities, challenging dirt tracks, and morning tea. The Dunga generosity was evident at lunch as they visited school kids at Duaringa State School and provided them with a substantial yearly supply of educational tools and toys. They also were able to support a local young family enduring the tragic loss of their dad and husband. The day finished in the town of Baralaba for a memorable night of dress-ups, locally cooked food, and some entertainment from a local country band.
Day 3: A chilly morning began the day with some off-road driving as the teams arrived at Gyranda Santa Gertrudis Stud for morning
tea. The onto Eidsvold for “cow poo tossing” before moving to Cania Gorge for the night. There the teams quickly raised over $10000 for Angel Flights to help a young family with travel expenses. The teams created some own entertainment early in the night and finishing with talented local Derek Smith.
Day 4: Challenging dirt-driving tracks weaved the teams through some beautiful country on the return to our families. The emotional homecoming had records crowds line the esplanade to wave at the cars that Hervey Bay knows the “Dunga” so well.
Plans are already in motion for next year’s 10th birthday celebrations that is rumoured to be over 4 nights.

IN JUST a space of three years, vision-impaired
Raissa Martin went from a recreational goalball player to a Paralympic athlete. She has promised herself to never let her limitations limit her, and so far she has kept that promise by having competed in two Paralympics, Rio2016 and Tokyo2022.
Now one of the oldest players on her team at 32 years of age, Raissa was gearing up to compete again with the Aussie Belles at Goalball on 18 August at this year's 2023 IBSA World Blind Games.
“It’s a new team with only two players from the Tokyo games,” said Raissa.
She is driven by her goal for her third Paralympics in Paris 2024 and in the memory of her mother who passed away last year.
“She was so proud of me…… and she is always with me,” said Raissa.
Raissa was born in Hervey Bay and attended Pialba Primary and Hervey Bay High School. She couldn’t compete in local sports because of being vision impaired, but athletics was her chance to shine.
She attended eight state championships and gave the skills she uses today.
“I learnt how to train and
loved the running from 100 metres to 800 metres.”
At this year's World Blind Games, she will be a part of the largest ever blind and low vision team competing on the international stage. Her first ever national representation in Goalball was at the 2015 world games.
This year, the games are in Birmingham, playing at many venues that held the
Commonwealth Games last year.
“This shows how far our sport has come along that we play in some fantastic stadiums,” said Raissa.
Hervey Bay can be proud of Raissa Martin for representing Australia and inspiring many other youngsters for Brisbane 2032 so that they too can represent their country.
A vibrant, new community hub is coming, with a larger library and flexible spaces for use, day and night. There’ll also be a bustling public plaza where there could be events, markets and live music.
This will be your one-stop spot for learning, socialising and accessing Council services. Learn more about the exciting changes coming at Council’s Engagement Hub website.
PATIENTS from across the Fraser Coast region now have access to cutting-edge robotic technology for hip and knee replacement surgery following the arrival of the first Mako robot at St Stephen’s Hospital in Hervey Bay.
The Mako orthopaedic robot is designed to improve outcomes for patients requiring total or partial hip or knee replacement surgery by assisting orthopaedic surgeons to deliver new levels of accuracy and precision.
After experiencing significant and prolonged pain as a result of knee degeneration caused by arthritis, Hervey Bay resident, Doug McClean, became one of the first to benefit from the new technology when he underwent bilateral knee replacement surgery with Dr Navi Bali in June 2023.
“The pain in my right knee in particular was very bad, I had become limited in what I could do. So, I was delighted to hear about the new robot and was very willing to get on with the surgery,” Doug said.
“Within three weeks after the surgery, I was able to walk
around unaided,” he said.
St Stephen’s Hospital orthopaedic surgeon, Dr Navi Bali, said the robotic technology assists surgeons to deliver greater accuracy and better outcomes for patients.
“In joint replacement surgery, placement of the implant is crucial. The ultimate goal is to
we can place the implant in the perfect position.
“Once we’re operating, the robot helps to guide placement of the implant to within 1 millimetre and 1 degree of accuracy.
“The accuracy we can achieve when assisted by this technology is phenomenal. That accuracy has loads of benefits in terms of outcomes for our patients, including less pain, quicker rehabilitation and happier patients.” General Manager, Peter Wood, said the arrival of the orthopaedic robot at St Stephen’s was part of the hospital’s ongoing commitment to making exceptional care available closer to home.

For Doug McClean, it’s been a positive experience and one that’s helping him get back to the activities he enjoys.
“I’ve continued having regular rehabilitation appointments at St Stephen’s in the month following surgery and it’s just great that I can feel myself getting better every day,” Doug said.
“My objective now is to get back to golf!,” he said.

ACCORDING to The Black Dog Institute, the highest proportion of individuals with a mental health condition is those aged 20-24 (12.3%) and those aged 25-29 (11.9%).
Mental Health and Mental Health awareness has become a widespread topic globally; however, many people still aren’t comfortable about speaking up.
On the 14th of September it is national RUOK? Day. This fantastic initiative is a great reminder to check in on your loved ones, friends and colleagues. More importantly, it is a great reminder to check up on yourself. Many of us are quick to fill other people’s cups before filling our own, but you can’t pour from an empty cup!
So, what is contributing to these high statistics? Young adulthood (the period of 18 –34 years of age) is considered a stage of life marked by rapid personal development and major life transitions. It is a time when young people may: leave home, begin further education, enter the workforce, experience financial independence, form relationships, and experience

The Community Support Fund, provided by the Department of Social Services, is an exciting $5M placebased community development opportunity and is the result of significant investment by the Hinkler region.
The Department of Social Services Local Service Plans have identified five key priority areas for our communities to develop cohesive partnerships where we all share in finding sustainable solutions to addressing social and economic problems.
We are looking for partnerships now. HBNC has a long history of driving social innovation for the region and will be the brokering organisation to support community members to co-design new initiatives to address the priority areas in the Local Services Plan.
The Social Shift will provide a platform for individuals, organisations and government agencies to work together in addressing our social challenges while also building resilient and vibrant communities. Emerging evidence and research support that complex social issues can only be tackled successfully at a local level, with whole-of-community involvement, prevention and early intervention the key success factors.
The Social Shift will provide immediate support for the social needs and aspirations of the Hinkler communities.
Community change is challenging.
As an individual or organisational changemaker, we are often better at deploying program-based or focused strategies to solve simple problems than we are at shifting the systems which are holding the problem in place.
It is difficult to shift large and complex systems on our own. Even working in the context of a single organisation, scaling systems change is challenging given limitations on resources. Achieving deeper and more robust systems change, especially within communities, requires a new set of skills and mindsets that results in a different way of approaching and working through change.
HBNC will be delivering a number of workshops over the coming months to support capacity building for community members who have ideas on improving our community across the five priority areas in the Local Service Plans. These include: Mental health, Drug and Alcohol, Domestic Violence and Economic independence.
HBNC will also facilitate the Social Innovators Pitch Nights in October, however, you do not need to wait for this to get your application in.
Community-led change requires us to navigate our way across local and community dynamics. It embraces the diverse voices, while also pushes us to consider the whole system. It calls on us, as changemakers, to be courageous, ask challenging questions, to be patient and continue to move forward.
AS A GENERAL practitioner, I have patients concerned about their memory and whether this is a sign of dementia.
Dementia, a condition affecting memory and thinking, touches the lives of many people around the world. The Fraser Coast, in 2021, had a population of approximately 110 000; of this cohort 1.7% have been diagnosed with dementia, which equates to nearly 2000 people.
It’s important to know that dementia is not just a normal part of getting older.
Dementia is an umbrella term, and there are many different causes including Alzheimer’s Disease, vascular dementia, Lewy body dementia, and frontotemporal dementia.
See your General Practitioner (GP) early, especially if you, your family or your friends are worried. Getting the right diagnosis early is vital - so we can work together to limit progression, develop a management strategy and plan. Further investigations
include memory tests, blood tests and imaging. Sometimes, a referral to a subspecialty, such as a neurologist or a geriatrician, to confirm the diagnosis. However, we know there are significant wait times for these services.
requires a team. Your healthcare team will include your GP, pharmacist, nurse and allied health. We encourage the optimisation of your physical and psychological health, including hearing, vision, mobility and balance. We recommend regular blood tests, immunisations and other preventative health measures.
Support groups are a great place to find resources and connect with others. We encourage people who are registered with My Aged Care to access additional support. Many activities currently occur in our community which include exercise and social groups.
Living with dementia isn’t easy, not just for the person with it, but for their family too. Dementia is a progressive illness, and the goal of management involves maintaining the individual’s function and independence. Additionally, we want to ensure the safety of the individual and people around them. To achieve this
To reassure my readers, misplaced keys generally is not a sign of dementia! However, it is an opportunity to discuss your health with your GP, as prevention is the key.

HERVEY Bay State High School held their annual Careers Expo earlier this month, providing guidance and information in relation to career options and opportunities for their students.
Transitioning from school to work can be a daunting time for our youth, and the expo provided an opportunity to explore a wide range of academic and career opportunities, to help them discover the right future path.
“We had as many as 800 students come through the Careers Expo. It is primarily targeted for our year 10 students, of which there are 260. They are the ones who are about to complete their SET-plan, which
entails choosing their pathway for years 11 and 12,” said Deputy Principal Terri Weatherley. Many of the exhibitors at the Careers Expo were local organisations, with a view to creating opportunities for our youth to stay in our region post school.
“Pathways to employment after high school are vital for students’ future success. They offer diverse opportunities, be it further study, vocational training, or apprenticeships, aligning with individual interests and skills. These pathways empower students to make informed career choices, bridge the gap between education and industry, and foster a skilled
workforce.”
“We have fabulous students who would be an asset to any local business and programs like the expo allow those students to talk to real local employers about how they can improve their prospects of employability.”
“We host a number of agencies, including apprenticeship organisations, who assist students with the correct pathway for securing apprenticeships and traineeships.”
More than forty exhibitors took part in the Careers Expo this year, the third year of the event, and planning is already well underway for 2024.
JEN Windebank will be hosting a private Cuppa for Cancer event on Friday 8th September in Craignish.
She wanted to do something in the fight of cancer after having many family members fight this dreaded illness.
After losing close family members to cancer over the years including her brother also being diagnosed with terminal cancer, the illness also touched closer to home.
Her husband Ken Windebank, an ex Vietnam veteran, was diagnosed with cancer years ago but luckily is now full recovered and this event is her chance to help raise funds for the Cancer Council.
“I wanted to do something myself to try and help people”, says Jen.
“I wanted to try out something different and hold a cuppa for cancer in a beautiful garden setting”.
On a spacious property opposite the Fraser Lakes Golf Club, the garden has unique art of dinosaur structures and a decking with a picturesque view that provide a wonderful background for the morning tea.
The Cancer Council Queensland states 32,000 Queenslanders are diagnosed with cancer each year, yet less than 20% of the people affected get the help needed.
One in two Queenslanders will develop cancer before the age of 85, on average one Queenslander will be diagnosed with cancer every 20
The statistics are very confronting yet an early diagnose has a significant impact on a positive outcome.
Jen Windebank would like to make a difference and invites people to share “a cuppa on the deck”.
Tickets are $10 per person and limited to 30 people from 9am until 11am with a trading table and a raffle being sold. For further details, call Jen on 0427 621 713.
FOR THIRTY years, Karen has called Hervey Bay home. Her journey through the years has been one marked by change, challenges, and a deep sense of community.
When she arrived, Hervey Bay was a place of simplicity, with no traffic lights gracing its streets, a stark contrast to Karen’s previous residence in Castle Hill, New South Wales. The catalyst for her move was a divorce and family; Karen’s parents were drawn to Hervey Bay, prompting her to follow suit after she helped them in selling their Sydney house.
Born in Richmond in Melbourne, Karen’s ties to her birth town and to Sydney are strong.
Karen’s younger years in Melbourne were happy ones, but it’s here in Hervey Bay that her children grew up, creating a deep-rooted connection to the city.
Before embracing Hervey Bay, Karen spent two decades working in real estate administration in a one-girl office, a job that entailed a wide range of responsibilities, from managing contracts to orchestrating open houses. She has also worked as a party planner and looked after ticket sales at Village Roadshow. At one point, she held down three jobs at once, which is almost unheard of today.
While Karen’s journey includes a marriage that ended
in divorce, she gained strength from the challenges she faced as a single parent, ensuring her children’s well-being remained at the forefront.
The sudden loss of her mother in 2003 was another poignant chapter in Karen’s life, a reminder of the fragility of time. Now at sixty-seven years old, she reflects on her experiences with a sense of wisdom and gratitude.
Karen threw herself into the Hervey Bay community, and it has become a central pillar of her life. From her early days volunteering at the Hervey Bay Information Centre to her involvement with Bay Connect (for close to twenty years), and the Urangan Community
Every
176 Dayman Street, Urangan Phone 07 4128 9679
Centre, she has enjoyed giving back. The Arts Council and the Torquay Progress Association have also benefited from her time and dedication, showing her love for community work. Running the Torquay Beachside Markets for over a decade, Karen has been a familiar face on the local scene, and she loves the fact that all proceeds from the markets go back into the community.
To Karen, the Hervey Bay community isn’t just a collection of individuals; it’s an extended family, a sentiment that fuels her enthusiasm for engaging with marketgoers and embracing the camaraderie that flourishes within the
community.
Karen also loves to travel with her family and explore new horizons. Earlier this year, she visited Las Vegas and is looking forward to a Disney cruise coming up in December. Next year she will be off to Hawaii.
Over the decades, Karen has been blessed with good health but now needs a hip replacement. But even with this impending change, her spirit remains undiminished.
Her creativity flourishes in her love for crafting, particularly card making and creating intricate Hawaiian Leis. Amidst her hobbies, she finds time to indulge in a bit of reality TV
and enjoys shows like Survivor and The Amazing Race.
For Karen, Hervey Bay has proven to be more than just a geographic location; it has become a rich tapestry woven with personal growth, resilience, and a deep sense of belonging.
Her story teaches us the importance of community engagement, the beauty of family connections, and the resilience to adapt to life’s transitions.
Through her journey, she underscores the value of embracing change, giving back, and cherishing every moment along the way.

WHEN husband and wife team Nick and Amanda Kuhn decided to make the move from Alice Springs back to the Fraser Coast and launch headlong into a free-range organic chicken egg business, it was a leap of faith.
With no prior experience, they started on some land on Nick’s parent’s farm, and away they went.
“I was excited to come back and work on the family farm. I had some pet chickens here on the farm when I was young, but obviously nothing like the scale we have now,” Nick said.
“We started in March 2019 with one caravan and 800 chickens. We were told we were bloody crazy.” Most start with 50 or 100 birds, but one thing was for sure, Nick and Amanda were all in. You can’t just go down to
Bunnings and pick up 800 chickens; it’s an upfront commitment made well in advance.
“We had to order the chickens six months in advance from a company just outside of Brisbane, which is the only place in Queensland that you can get our breed of chickens.”
“Once the chickens arrive, they have a two-week adjustment period before they will start to lay. That’s when the fun starts.”
“We have to train them to head into the caravan to lay, which is a learned behaviour, but it must be pretty cool to watch us herd chickens for that first three-days.”
Fast forward to today, and Brother Brother Organics has four caravans and just over 4,500 birds, moving up to 6,000 in September.
“There is no doubt that our growth has been on the back of consumer
demand for free range produce. People want to buy directly off the grower and understand where their food comes from, that the transparency is there.”
“Consumers need to be very careful around clever marketing. You can have eggs from a cage, where chickens have been fed certified organic grain and that can be called an organic egg.”
“Even with free-range, you can have up to 10,000 chickens per hectare. We have less than 50.”
From humble beginnings, Brother Brother Organics has forged itself as a true local family success story, producing over 25,000 eggs a week for local markets, specialised stores in Hervey Bay, along with cafes and restaurants.
