The multi-story Sheraton development, that represents ‘growth’, in reality extracts from nature and communities, destroys nature and communities.
This style of development is not good enough. Who benefits from developments such as the Sheraton one? A very small number of people who don’t live in our community, who don’t have much thought about our nature and quality of life.
Many communities are now saying, “No, we don’t want this type of development, growth!”
Because we lose everything
FRASER Coast Mates is once again hosting their highly anticipated annual Pink Dinner on Friday, October 11th. Proudly presented by Prime Agents and generously supported by the Hervey Bay RSL Club, this event has established itself as a vital part of the community’s entertainment calendar.
The Pink Dinner is not only an evening of celebration but also a powerful initiative aimed at raising awareness about mental health and generating much-needed funds for intervention counseling services.
Now in its 3rd year, the Pink Dinner has consistently garnered significant support from the community. Over the years, the event has successfully raised over $20,000, making a profound impact on the local mental health landscape.
Every $100 raised at the event directly funds a
that is us. We will lose the things that shape us.
All developers ask is how much can we extract, how much money can we make?
Not how can we leave systems (nature and communities) thriving.
Cr Truscott is same old same old. Mayor Seymour, Cr Govers, Cr Cosgrove, Cr Weiland and Cr O’Keefe are progressive in their thinking. They are asking an excellent question of us; what is our end in mind, what type of place do we want to create and live in?
A place like Maroochydore with high density high rise apartments, an increased number of people that crowd us out, increased stress and
the destruction of our natural beauty and the feel of our place?
Or stunning beaches and water that is clear and calm, that we can access easily.
Beautiful patches of bush, home to birds, koalas, gliders and so much more life and a magic quality of life? We want the latter, it’s a no brainer.
Noosa has said no to crass development like Sheraton’s and have placed an ‘in-principle’ cap on their population.
This has not hurt their economy and has maintained all the things that they value and that benefit their locals.
Know that this Sheraton multi-story development will be the opening of the flood gates to more high rise.
free, one-hour face-to-face counseling session. These sessions are held locally, ensuring that individuals in need can access professional support with minimal delay, which is crucial in times of crisis.
Fraser Coast Mates has mastered the art of combining entertainment with education, creating an event that is both enjoyable and enlightening. The Pink Dinner effectively informs the community about the importance of mental health, fostering a culture of understanding and reducing the stigma often associated with mental health issues.
This heightened awareness encourages people to seek help without fear of judgment, promoting a culture of empathy, openness, and support within the community.
This year’s Pink Dinner promises to be a memorable evening, featuring a panel of
What century are we in?
Surely corporates such as Sheraton can build, create developments that align with the things we locals value, that compliment nature and our quality of life!

not on the Mayor’s friends list.
In his speech, the Mayor demonstrated that he was a person with a lot of honesty, integrity and who knows how to listen to the opinions of the people of this city.
That deserves my respect and admiration. I myself decided to stay in this city in 1993 because of what this city have to offer.
In that time Fred Kleinschmidt was the Mayor and Bill Nunn the local member of Parliament.
This makes me know a bit about the history of this city and also why people want to come here.
When I heard the future candidate talk about how on his morning walks people told him that they agreed with this

Mayor, raising his image. Paul Truscott has no history in this city, the two previous Mayors we had from Maryborough have not left a very good impression.
I personally believe that we should cut this amalgamation because it does not benefit us at all.
I also want to add that a local (Torquay Towers Appeal) group has been formed in which it opposes the altitude of this building, to which I invite all residents to put their names. When we talk about protecting the environment, the kind of life we want and the care of this city, we don’t need someone that lives 30 kilometres away from here; with no history at all.
When ethnic, religious and political groups come together to protect our city the change will occur.
If you don’t believe me, look how Traveston Dam ended up. With the people’s power!!!
Families enjoyed the parks, felt safe, and the area exuded a sense of community.
However, over the decades, the gradual decline of the foreshore has been alarming. In the past eight years, it seems as if a deliberate policy has been implemented to let the area deteriorate into a weed-infested jungle. Once magnificent parks have shrunk, overtaken by uncontrolled regrowth, mulch, and weeds. The natural areas, once meticulously cared for, have been left to be overrun by noxious weeds.
This is not a call for manicured tourist parks. The residents of Point Vernon are asking for the restoration of the parklands to a natural state, where families can again enjoy the space, views, and sense of pride. We don’t want the trees removed, but we do want the weeds and undergrowth tidied up to reflect a community that cares about its environment. Proper maintenance will also mitigate risks associated with vermin, snakes, and other predators that thrive in the overgrown areas.
In 1981, I first called Point Vernon home, and for the last 30 years, I’ve watched this community evolve. Back in the 1980s, Point Vernon was the premium residential address in Hervey Bay. The foreshore was a source of pride, with well-maintained parklands and natural vegetation, offering stunning views across the bay.
Hervey Bay’s population has grown from 15,00020,000 in the 1980s to around 65,000 today, with projections suggesting a potential tripling in population this century. The water and foreshore are key attractions for residents and newcomers alike. It is illogical to continue reducing recreational space as the population grows. We have a
new council with fresh energy and a better understanding of community needs. The Point Vernon Esplanade is a crucial asset that, if properly cared for, will enhance the area for future generations.
The argument of erosion, often used as an excuse for neglect, doesn’t hold water— most of Point Vernon is on bedrock and identified as low risk. A well-maintained foreshore can counter these concerns.
It’s time for the silent majority to be heard. Let’s restore the pride in our foreshore. I urge everyone to sign the petition initiated by the Point Vernon Foreshore Enhancement Group. Let’s work together to ensure the Fraser Coast Regional Council supports Councillor Lachlan Cosgrove’s motion for increased maintenance and enhancement. By signing this petition, you’re not just supporting a piece of land; you’re standing up for a community that deserves a safe, beautiful, and well-maintained foreshore. Let’s bring back our foreshore—it’s not just about preservation, but about creating a space where families can thrive and where our natural beauty is showcased for all to enjoy.

HBNC is delighted to announce the launch of its new Street Library, proudly provided by the Fraser Coast Regional Council. This vibrant addition to the community was beautifully designed and painted by Butchulla Elder, Aunty Karen Hall.
Located at the front of the Hervey Bay Community
Centre, the Street Library offers a warm invitation for all community members to engage in the joy of reading. It operates on a simple, community-driven model: take a book, donate a book, or swap a book.
Available Monday to Friday, 8.30am-4.30pm, it fosters a culture of sharing and lifelong learning among residents of all ages.
Tanya Stevenson, CEO of HBNC, shared her excitement about the initiative.
“The Street Library is a wonderful reflection of our community’s spirit of generosity and love for learning,” Tanya said.
“We are grateful to the Fraser Coast Regional Council for their support and to Aunty Karen Hall for her stunning artwork, which adds a unique cultural significance to this project.
“We encourage everyone to come by, explore the library, and be part of this fantastic community resource.”
PASSENGERS and residents can look forward to cheaper parking, reduced crowding in the departure lounge, and a chance to win a flight voucher with the new passenger improvements at Hervey Bay Airport.
Fraser Coast Mayor George Seymour said that Council was now offering free parking for the first 30 minutes, eliminating the need to use the two-minute lane for pick up and drop-offs.
“We think this change improves efficiency and will be welcomed by residents. Providing free parking for the first 30 minutes is one way Council can make travel in our region more affordable and enjoyable,” he said.
“Hervey Bay Airport has commercial flights that operate regularly to and from Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, Lady Elliot Island and K’gari.
“To improve the experience for
passengers waiting for flights, the departure lounge will be expanded to accommodate 250 passengers.
“The current departure lounge seats 160 passengers, often accommodating many more passengers over two and a half hours during peak times.
“This extension, will increase seating to 250 and reduce crowding during peak times.
“This upgrade will be a significant asset for the airport, as passenger numbers have increased considerably since Jetstar began flying direct from Hervey Bay to Melbourne in June 2024.
“Overall passenger numbers have increased by 13% in the last financial year, with 168,616 passengers flying in and out of Hervey Bay Airport in 2023/24.”
Cr Seymour said it was fantastic to see the number of passengers travelling to and from Hervey Bay Airport
increasing each year.
“There are not many places in Australia where you can step off a plane after a short flight from Sydney or Melbourne and be on the doorstep to the worldfamous K’Gari, amazing nature adventures or whales experience at your doorstep,” he said.
“For the next three months, the Hervey Bay Airport is also giving residents the chance to win a $500 flight voucher by filling in an online survey on travel.
“This data collected will be used to improve the flying experience and attract new flights to our airport. Click here to do the survey: https://bit.ly/ HerveyBayAirportSurvey.
“Council is keen to ensure the Fraser Coast has a strong, resilient and diversified economy, and having a strong aviation access and a bustling tourism industry is vital to achieving that goal.”
ON 16TH AUGUST 1984, twenty-three business and professional leaders from the Hervey Bay area were presented with a charter that officially formed the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City. At that time, the population of Hervey Bay was 20,000, and the club earned the name Hervey Bay City as the town had just been proclaimed a city.
At the Club’s recent Changeover event, held at the Kondari Resort in Urangan in June, members celebrated the Club’s 40th Anniversary with a special cake. Two of the original Charter Members, Ray Hamlyn and Des Richters, had the honor of cutting the cake amidst much applause and celebration from the attendees. This event marked a significant milestone in the Club’s history, reflecting on four decades of community service and fellowship.
Next year will be the 70th anniversary of the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay, which was chartered in 1955 and served as the ‘parent’ club of Hervey Bay City. Plans for a celebration are underway, with details yet to be organized.
The City Club remains very active in the community, engaging in both local and international projects. The
club’s ongoing efforts continue to positively impact the lives of many, demonstrating the enduring value of their work.
Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City members participate in a range of initiatives, from fundraising events to hands-on service projects. They collaborate with other organizations to address various community needs, such as health, education, and disaster relief. The club’s commitment to service above self is a cornerstone of its activities, fostering goodwill and positive change.
As the club looks forward to future endeavours, they are
always on the lookout for new members who are passionate about making a difference. If you believe that Rotary could be a good fit for you, consider joining and becoming part of a global network of individuals dedicated to community service and leadership.
With a rich history and a bright future, the Rotary Club of Hervey Bay City continues to uphold its mission of service, camaraderie, and community support. The upcoming celebrations and ongoing projects reflect the club’s resilience and dedication to making Hervey Bay and the world a better place.

Glendyne students are following the lead of a rugby league legend to help develop and achieve life goals.
Young people from the Hervey Bay school have been participating in the ‘You Got This’ program through the Johnathan Thurston Academy.
Led by former North Queensland Cowboys, Queensland Maroons and Australian Kangaroos star, Johnathan Thurston, the initiative is aimed at empowering young people by boosting their wellbeing,
education and employment prospects.
Fourteen Carinity Education Glendyne students recently graduated from the Johnathan Thurston Academy’s ‘You Got This’ program. The program supports vulnerable youth to focus on enhancing their internal strength and build resilience.
Carinity Education Glendyne Inclusion Support Worker, Gail Parry, said weekly workshops focused on promoting family; community and prosocial connections; behaviour and goal setting; and building
healthy relationships.
“Students also learned life skills and undertook activities to develop confidence, courage and self-belief,” Gail said.
“By participating in the course our young people have gained more confidence and have a much clearer vision for the direction they want to take their lives.”

A RECORD number of participants raised a record amount during the 10th anniversary Fraser Coast Dunga Derby held from July 31-August 5.
This milestone annual car rally was a celebration of community, camaraderie and a decade of building a more compassionate community as more than 260 ‘Dungarians’ headed off for five days of a magical mystery tour from Coast to Country.
The participants raised a record $727,800 for charity Rally for a Cause that raises funds for Fraser Coast residents impacted by lifelimiting medical conditions or whose lives have been significantly disrupted by circumstances beyond their control.
Since its inception in 2015, the Fraser Coast Dunga Derby has raised more than $4 million to assist more than 320 local families and individuals during the toughest times of their lives.
“The 10th annual Dunga Derby was a fitting tribute to a decade of fun and fundraising,” said Kerry Spencer, Rally For A Cause chair.
“This year we traveled more
than 2,700km from Hervey Bay to Nindigully, across the NSW border to Caringa Station near Lightning Ridge, Pallamallawa and then to Murphy’s Creek before heading back home to finish with our traditional parade down the Esplanade.
“It was a rugged course taking many dirt roads and tackling mud tracks which presented some driving challenges. But we all got home safely after having a great time and seeing plenty of countryside.
“We are all very thankful to our sponsors, supporters and the community that allows us to raise what we have to help.”
When an unexpected illness or personal tragedy occurs, Rally For A Cause works with
families and individuals to ease the burden and financial strain. They engage and determine what it is that would best help get that family through.
The Dunga Derby traditionally travels from Coast to Country to smaller rural communities where it provides a major economic boost for the towns and communities visited.
“Our policy is to always leave a community better than we find it and that was again the case this year. We were able to raise another $25,000 during the Dunga event for two special families we met along the way.”

DURING the June-July school holidays, nearly 300 kids participated in the Qld Kids Fishing Classic, a statewide fishing competition.
Local entrant Elliot Fowler won the “Silver Perch for 8-12yr category” with his two fish measuring 740mm.
The competition winners were determined by the longest two fish in various species categories.
Elliot expressed his excitement, saying, “I really enjoy fishing, but this time I had a goal to keep doing better, no matter the weather. It was amazing to do something I love in a competition.”
Participants logged a total of 3,284 fish, including 103 different species. The competition encourages kids to enter every fish, regardless of size, keeping all participants engaged and contributing valuable data for research.

What started as a simple plan to prevent falls at home and maintain seniors’ mobility, activity and safety has expanded into a much broader initiative, offering additional benefits for social, health and wellbeing.
A partnership between Wide Bay Hospital and Health Service (WBHHS), Queensland Ambulance Service (QAS), Country to Coast Queensland, and Hervey Bay Neighbourhood Centre (HBNC) has created the Healthy Ageing program.
Based in Hervey Bay, a seaside
town that has been a popular spot to retire to for thousands of Queenslanders, the program is designed to prevent falls in the home through education, movement and confidence.
at HBNC’s Community Wellness Centre, or individually and through WBHHS’s support team.
“It’s basically designed to keep people mobile, and safe at home, to encourage their mobility and confidence,” said Pauline Alderding from WBHHS’s Integrated Care team.
This is done through a referral to the service providers, who work with participants either in group sessions
“One of the side benefits of this is that we’re keeping people out of hospital by using fall prevention techniques and education.
“We may get a referral from a GP, QAS or from the emergency department, and once I get that I’ll make a call to the person and explain the service we offer, usually within 48 hours of receiving the original referral.
“We work alongside Bolton Clarke, a non-government funded home care provider who assist us in running strength and balancing classes which may include a nurse and a physiotherapist.
Pauline said the classes are designed to build muscle and strength and improve balance through physiotherapy.
“The exercises are tailored to the individuals, some of whom may have diabetes or a respiratory condition, so we make sure that all factors are taken into consideration,” Pauline said.
“For two hours every Wednesday the first half is exercise, then after a break there’s a chosen topic to discuss then we all have morning tea.
“We try to tailor our discussions to
what matters to them – for example scamming; and medical issues such as diabetes.
“Some people have said to me that it is the highlight of their week, and at the end of the 12-week program we get people saying they would love to keep going!”
The Wide Bay region work closely with the local residents to prevent falls before they happen, with program benefits extending to reduced hospitalisations and improved mental health.
“We work with the clients and do an assessment at their home, we have a checklist that we run through,” Pauline said.
“There can be many factors that contribute to a fall – it’s not solely about someone’s strength.
“It’s also about other contributing factors and their health as a whole, and what safety features you may have at home to prevent trip hazards.
“We look at what additional support people need, and there are simply so many benefits to this program.
“It’s a program designed to keep people safe and mobile in their own homes and to give them confidence.
“Plus, there are side benefits like reducing hospital presentations due to falls and promoting mental health and wellbeing due to the social aspects of the meetings and activities.”

WIN Consulting Qld (WCQ) recently demonstrated its continued excellence in the construction industry by securing three prestigious awards at the Queensland Master Builders Awards.
These latest accolades bring the company’s total to an impressive twenty-five QMBA Awards, a testament to the exceptional quality and innovation that WCQ consistently delivers.
Managing Director Glen Winney expressed his pride in this achievement, highlighting it as a reflection of the dedication and skill of the entire WCQ team.
“This recognition is truly a team effort,” Glen stated.
“To be continuously acknowledged for excellence in the commercial building sector is a direct result of our unwavering commitment to delivering outstanding results for our clients. Every project we undertake is an opportunity to strive for excellence, and these awards are a validation of that commitment.”
WCQ’s three recent awards include the Best Medium Density up to Three Storeys – Over Five Dwellings for Marina Cove, Best Community Service Facility for Eli Waters Animal Clinic, and the Truecore Best Use of Steel Frame Housing Award for Marina Cove.
Glen attributes these achievements to the company’s deep understanding of client needs and its commitment to listening and responding effectively.
“These awards are not just a recognition of our technical capabilities, but also of our approach to client relationships. We focus on understanding what our clients truly want and then work backward from there to deliver a product that exceeds their expectations.”
He also emphasised the rigorous judging process for the QMBA Awards, where building experts personally tour each project.
“The judges look closely at the quality of workmanship,
the challenges overcome during construction, the aesthetics, and the overall appeal of the project. Sustainability is another critical factor that enhances a project’s standing.”
Despite the accolades, Glen remains focused on WCQ’s core mission: serving the client.
“We don’t build for awards. While it’s gratifying to be recognised, our primary focus is always on the end user. Our goal is to deliver exactly what our clients need, with no compromises.”
Glen also noted the current challenges in the construction industry, particularly the high demand for trades in the housing market.
“There’s a lot of pressure on the trades right now, but there remains significant demand for bespoke and purpose-built commercial projects. It’s crucial for clients to partner with an organisation like WCQ that has the depth of experience and capability to deliver the high-quality outcomes they expect.”
IN OUR pursuit of health and fitness, the relationship we cultivate with our minds can determine our success.
We must become the masters of our thoughts, ensuring our “yes” is an unwavering commitment that turns intentions into powerful actions.
Exercise should be viewed as a non-negotiable aspect of our lives.
It’s not merely an activity we engage in when convenient; it’s vital for our well-being. Regular physical activity boosts mood, reduces anxiety, and enhances cognitive function.
However, to get started, it’s essential not to focus solely on the end goal but on the small, actionable steps that lead there.
Incorporating exercises that improve both cardiovascular and muscular strength, such as brisk walking, functional fitness, weightlifting, or swimming, is a fantastic way to build a balanced fitness
regimen.
Equally important is nutrition and understanding how to fuel your body for success.
Learning from a nutritionist
or dietitian can deepen your understanding of what your body truly needs.
They can help you create a personalised eating plan that nurtures both your gut health and brain function.
Nutrition plays a critical role; the connection between the gut and brain is welldocumented, emphasising
that what we consume directly impacts our mental clarity and mood.
Every day, find ways to incorporate health into your routine.
This could be as simple as taking a short walk during your lunch break, preparing a nutritious meal, or engaging in mindful eating practices.
Transforming your lifestyle is a journey—embrace it one healthy choice at a time.
To change our lives, we must own our relationship with our minds.
When our intentions align with consistent actions for exercise and nutrition, we enhance our physical health and nurture our mental wellbeing.
Let’s prioritise health, where our “yes” becomes a commitment, paving the way for a vibrant life defined by resilience and strength.

Loan settlement story-time!
Did your bank or broker say no to your loan application? This is what happened to Lee and Sam who had an existing home loan and needed to consolidate some debts.
They’d had a rough couple of years and were quite behind on their mortgage repayments and they were struggling to make the minimum payments on some credit card debt that they had accrued. Both of these factors had negatively impacted their credit score and meant that their regular bank did not want to lend
Insights
them any more money to consolidate and streamline their finances.
The Go Further broker team were able to look at Lee and Sam’s situation personally and deep dive into the reasons behind their hardship. Using this information, a well structured loan application was submitted and Lee and Sam’s debt were consolidated. They now had only one overall repayment comig out of their account each muchclearing their minds and freeing up cashflow for other expenses.
Lenders assess potential clients based on various criteria to determine whether they will offer loans. These factors create a landscape where clients may receive different responses from different lenders.
Spotlight! Lending policy of the fortnight
Lending policy refers to the set of guidelines, rules, and criteria that a financial institution or lender follows when determining whether to approve a loan to a borrower.
Today’s policy: Debt Consolidation
If you’re struggling with multiple debt repayments, even 2 or 3, then consolidating via a personal loan OR via your home loan can reduce the headache of managing multiple repayments and overall cost. This is also a quick way to increase your credit score. You don’t need to own property to do this and it can be a great way to help you reduce debt faster as well. **Lending and eligibility criteria apply.
