Welcome

Welcome to the winter edition of Hertsmere News

As celebrations marking the 50th anniversary of the borough’s creation continue, it’s fabulous to look at some of the wonderful photos taken at the recent family fun day. The Mayor and Mayoress were delighted to host the celebrations and join in the fun with the vintage cars on display – see our front cover. We also explain, on page 6, how our celebration grants helped to support community and voluntary groups in organising their own landmark events.

From April 2025, our new and free weekly food waste collection service will start. On page 8, we give you more information about the additional sustainability reasons for introducing that change and how recycled food waste can be turned into something useful. We also hear from Daniel, one of our Waste and Recycling team members, about his role and how the crews are preparing for the changes – see page 18.

Daniel is among the staff who have taken part in our new recruitment films, which tell the story of what it’s like to work for our council. It’s so heartening to hear everyone’s commitment and passion for their roles and of the great team spirit that exists across our different services.

The remaining pages include a range of updates across our services and about various health and wellbeing initiatives. I hope you find it an informative read.

I was thrilled to join Hertsmere’s first Gala Diwali celebration in November.

As the dark winter nights draw in, the range of festivities bringing light and celebration to our diverse borough continue in that vein.

I wish you and your families a Merry Christmas, a Happy Chanukah and every good wish for 2025.

Councillor Jeremy Newmark Leader of Hertsmere Borough Council leader@hertsmere.gov.uk

Young creatives spread seasonal cheer in Hertsm

Children from primary schools across the borough have been spreading seasonal cheer with their festive designs.

More than 140 entries for our 2024 seasonal card competition were received from primary school pupils, and five talented young creatives were chosen to receive prizes and were invited to a prize-giving presentation with the Mayor of Hertsmere, Councillor Richard Butler, last month (Monday 25 November).

Five-year-old Kian Troqe, who attends Cowley Hill School, and ten-year-old Maria Schipor, from Woodlands Primary School, have been named overall winners of this year’s contest.

Kian’s creative Christmas tree and snowman design has been selected as the council’s corporate e-card while Maria’s colourful cartoon-style design, featuring Santa with a

child receiving presents, has been selected as the Mayor of Hertsmere’s card.

Three runners-up were also announced –Melina Kitibos, age nine, from Ladbrooke JMI School; Sadie Winburn, age four, from Aldenham Prep School; and Oliver Pizzala, age six, from Ladbrooke JMI School. They all received a certificate, gift voucher, and a pack of their own cards to give to friends and family.

All the entries will be available to view on the front window of our Civic Offices throughout December to spread seasonal cheer to the community.

Mayor leads Armistice Day Service

A two-minute silence to remember the nation’s war dead was observed by officials and members of the public in Borehamwood to mark Armistice Day on 11 November.

As part of the ceremony, a reading was given by Royal British Legion representative, Carol Denbigh, before bugler, Adrian Temple, played the Last Post and the crowd fell silent to remember those who have been affected by war and conflict.

The ceremony ended with the raising of the Remembrance Day flag and a prayer from the Mayor’s Chaplain, Reverend Sarah Marshall.

50th anniversary family fun day

More than a thousand people came along to our 50th anniversary celebration at the end of September and joined in a free day of fun for all the family.

Funfair rides, live music, classic cars and food stalls were among the attractions at the event, staged at our Civic Offices car park in Borehamwood.

The Mayor of Hertsmere, Cllr Richard Butler, was on hand to open proceedings and thank everyone who contributed to the successful day.

Thank you to the organising committee which was made up of 50th anniversary Member Champion, Cllr Marc Amron, along with Cllrs Nik Oakley, Mia Handley and Caroline Clapper. We’re also grateful to InspireAll’s Park Events team for their help in co-ordinating the day.

Celebration grants

Community groups and voluntary organisations were encouraged to apply for funding to help celebrate Hertsmere’s 50-year anniversary earlier this year. The celebration grant applications closed in April

and over £30,000 was allocated to 46 organisations for a range of events and capital equipment including Moat View Residents Association for a commemorative bench for the residents’ garden and Friends of Kenilworth School who held a celebratory colour run amongst lots of others!

Golden Lottery prize draw

Hertsmere Community Lottery also helped communities celebrate the anniversary by running a special 50th Anniversary Prize Draw, which saw Hertsmere Mencap, Zenith Trampoline, Comfort Cases UK and DR96 all receive an additional £250 from Hertsmere Community Lottery to help them reach their goals.

Your new free, weekly food recycling collection

It’s hard to imagine that your plate scrapings, stale bread, mouldy food, tea and coffee bags, meat and fish bones can be used to create sustainable energy and fertiliser – there’s power in those peelings!

We are making changes to the way your food waste is collected, so that we can all recycle better.

Food waste sent to landfill doesn’t harmlessly break down. It has a big impact on the environment as it rots and releases methane – a harmful greenhouse gas that is 25 times more potent than carbon dioxide.

Food waste is the most common contaminant of our dry recycling service and currently accounts for about 27 per cent of waste found in the black bin. The introduction of a free additional weekly food waste collection not only creates sustainable energy, reduces our carbon footprint and increases recycling, but also reduces the likelihood of other recycling being sent to landfill due to contamination.

When recycled, food waste can be turned into something useful. Your food waste will be taken to a special processing plant in London Colney where it is used to generate electricity to power homes in our borough and produce fertiliser, which can be used in farming locally.

From January onwards, every household will receive a 23-litre outdoor silver food bin and a free pack of kitchen caddy liners before the new service launches in April 2025.

To learn more about the London Colney plant, visit: stgreenpower.co.uk/food-waste-recycling

To find out more about the weekly food waste collection in Hertsmere, go to hertsmere.gov.uk/foodwaste

Recycling your food waste has never been easier

Garden Waste Collection Service subscriptions from January

• Line your kitchen caddy using the liners we’ll provide or reuse a plastic bag, such as a bread bag, salad bag or cereal bag. The only thing you can’t use is a black bag.

• You can use your own container, like a biscuit tin or ice-cream tub as an indoor kitchen caddy –do whatever works for you.

• Please put your food recycling out for collection by 6am every week on your normal waste collection day.

• Remember your food recycling bin comes with a lockable handle to keep out pests.

From April 2025, your green bin will be collected if you have paid for a Garden Waste Collection Service subscription and display a sticker.

Garden waste will be collected fortnightly for just £50 per year, which means it costs less than £2 per collection.

You can share your green bin with your neighbour, but one of you must be the account holder. You can subscribe from mid-January.

Please visit: hertsmere.gov.uk/GardenWaste

DID YOU KNOW?

It’s cheaper to recycle food waste, with every lorry load of food recycled – instead of being sent to landfill –saving £100 per tonne.

Warm in Winter gift bags

Our team collected 500 Warm in Winter gift bags from Small Acts of Kindness in October.

These are being distributed to older people across the borough throughout the winter months. The gift bags have gone out to community groups, community spaces, and people attending our events.

Small Acts of Kindness is a charitable organisation that reduces loneliness and isolation for older and vulnerable people, with a particular interest in helping those who are cold in their homes. The Warm in Winter gift bags help to keep people warm when they are struggling to heat their homes and include practical items such as a fleece blanket, thermal hat, gloves and socks, a mug, hot drinks, soup and porridge.

They also contain a comprehensive information pack signposting to relevant support, services and activities, helping to break the cycle that loneliness and isolation can bring. The aim is that every older person that receives a gift bag will feel warmer in their home, cared for, and not alone.

Many pensioners in Hertsmere may be missing out on additional financial support. Around a third of eligible pensioners do not claim Pension Credit, often because they are unaware of their eligibility or the application process.

Improvements at King George Recreation Ground

We know how much you cherish our parks and open spaces, which is why we’re investing over a million pounds to enhance one of our flagship parks.

During the summer, we asked you for your views on how a programme of improvements to Bushey’s King George Recreation Ground could take shape. Your input was invaluable in shaping the future of this beloved space!

We received more than 12,000 individual comments during the two-month consultation period via our online consultation hub and through hard copies given to Friends of King George, completed at park events and at the Café in the Park.

We’re listening!

CAFÉ

There was unequivocal support to replace the current café, given its structural issues. At a public meeting on 22 October, it was agreed the best location for this would be just in front of the existing café, but away from the trees which are causing the subsidence.

PLAY EQUIPMENT

The flat swing, cableway and climbing net, and cradle swings are the most popular items of existing equipment. The main comments were to make it inclusive for all, to have more slides and swings, and to cater for children up to the age of 12.

SPLASH PARK

Residents were asked if they wanted it demolished, made reliable in its existing location or moved to an alternative location. A total of 79 per cent of those people to respond stated that they wanted it made reliable in its existing location.

MUGA (BALLCOURT)

All improvements received high levels of support with new surfacing and line markings being the top two comments. Additional suggestions included having different courts for specific sports, such as basketball, football and pickleball, as well as making the area bigger.

OUTDOOR FITNESS EQUIPMENT

Over half of the respondents wanted new equipment, which they said they personally would use.

PATHS

Resurfacing of paths along the main avenue is needed because of tree root damage, making the path less accessible for those with mobility issues.

Thank you to everyone who took part –we appreciate your comments.

We’re working through all the feedback. The next step is to develop a programme of improvements and determine how the funding can best be allocated.

We’ll keep you updated!

Q&A

WITH WASTE AND RECYCLING TEAM MEMBER DANIEL ASIMEN

We spoke to Daniel about his role as an HGV driver and loader in our waste and recycling team.

QWhat is an average day like for you?

A The team comes in early, with people usually arriving from 5.30am for a 6am start. We get the lorry ready, get

briefed and then head out on our round. With this job there is something different every day. It’s physically demanding, as you’re walking miles every day, but I enjoy working with my colleagues; they’re all very friendly, so it makes the day easier. Once we finish a round, we take the contents to the waste or recycling centre, which changes depending on the load and then we’re back to the depot to get the lorry cleaned, ready for the next day.

Our fundraisers!

Our staff organise in-house fundraising events from time to time when we get together to raise money for important charitable causes.

This year, we’ve raised money for Mind Hertfordshire Network, LGBTQ+ online support group as part of our Pride celebrations, organised a Macmillan Coffee Morning, taken part in Breast Cancer Now’s Wear it Pink Day and held a fundraiser for PoTS UK Awareness Day

We’ve raised a total of £382 across the charities.

We’re finished by early afternoon, so the hours are good and it means you get plenty of time at home with the family. If you fancy doing a bit of overtime, you can earn extra money, so it’s really down to you.

QWhat is a positive aspect of the role?

AThere are a lot of opportunities within the role. I have trained to drive an HGV lorry – a qualification which the council paid for.

You get free membership to your local council gym so, if I’m sore after a hard day, I’ll go to the sauna or we can get a free massage if we’re having back problems. Everyone is very friendly and helpful. If you’re having problems, you can ask anyone. Team is the main thing, it’s great.

Q What is coming up for the crews?

AChristmas is obviously a really busy time for us and we’re out working in cold, difficult conditions. When a member of the public comes out with drinks or biscuits to say “thank you”, they know that

we’re working hard to do a good job and that makes me feel valued. So thank you to those people.

Next year we’re bringing in separate weekly food waste collections and the rounds are likely to change, so we’ll be learning new ways of working. But it’s a great team and there’s lots of support for us.

AQWhat’s been your most memorable day?

I think it was my first day. Coming into a new job, I was very nervous but everyone looks after you and now I get to do the same for other people, so it’s very rewarding.

Join our team!

Click to watch our short film to hear from some of the crew members about working as part of the Street Scene Team.

Get on your bike in Borehamwood

In October, we and Beryl marked two successful years so far for our bike and e-bike share scheme in Borehamwood.

Since launching in 2022, the scheme has generated more than 25,000 sustainable journeys, covering in the region of 50,000km overall, and has had a positive impact on air quality and congestion levels as well as improving people’s mental and physical health.

The scheme in Hertsmere is proving a popular way to connect with other public transport services, and the bikes and e-bikes in Borehamwood are available to rent from 27 Beryl bays in the area.

Volunteers from Radlett and District Museum

Operated by Beryl on behalf of the council, the Borehamwood scheme is run alongside an expansion, launched earlier this year, in Bushey. The project is being funded by Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) money and Section 106 contributions from new development. For more information, including the various cost-effective ways of hiring the bikes, visit beryl.cc/scheme/hertsmere

The Beryl app is available for free download on the App Store and the Google Play Store.

The wheels on the 84B bus to keep going round and round into 2025

People needing to travel between Potters Bar and Barnet will be able to continue to make the journey by bus until at least April 2025.

That’s because our Cabinet approved further use of developer funding – through Hertsmere’s Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) scheme – in September to help to enable the well-used 84B bus service to remain in operation.

Launched in 2023, the 84B bus route restored direct access between Potters Bar train station and Barnet Hospital, six days a week, providing an invaluable link for hospital

users and visitors, schoolchildren, local businesses and residents.

The public’s need for the 84B route further into the future will be continually assessed. In the first year, demand for the service remained strong, with an average of more than 4,300 customers a month.

For details of the route which is operated by Central Connect, including the timetable, visit https://bustimes.org/services/84bbarnet-hospital-potters-bar.

Hundreds look to the future at Generation

Hundreds of young people took the opportunity to see what the future could hold for them at the third annual Generation Hertsmere event in November.

The event, at the Hilton Doubletree in Borehamwood, was attended by children from a number of the borough’s schools as well as students in further education, with many employers – including the council – on hand to speak to all of the young people and provide valuable insights about a huge variety of career options and pathways.

Other organisations and businesses, representing a diverse range of sectors, there on the day included Elstree Studios, Herts Police, Royal Air Force, Watford

Football Club, Griggs Homes, Alban Teaching and Communities First.

Organised by the council, the event also featured a ‘twilight’ session, providing young people and their parents with the chance to go along and chat informally with employers.

Thank you to all of the exhibitors and our sponsors for the event and, of course, to everyone who attended. We hope you found it useful, and here’s to Generation Hertsmere 2025!

Community Safety Partnership

Help police prevent burglaries this winter

Sadly, with the darker evenings, burglars often take advantage of unlit homes. You can help protect your property by taking some simple steps

Securely lock all windows and doors, including double-locking PVCu doors, keep valuable items such as handbags and keys out of sight and give your home a ‘lived-in’ look by using timer switches to turn on lights.

You may want to consider installing CCTV and doorbell cameras as an extra deterrent.

Sign up to Herts Connected to find out what is happening in your local area, keep up to date and have your say in what goes on where you live or work in Hertfordshire.

To find out more, visit hertsconnected.co.uk If you witness any suspicious activity in progress, please dial 999 straight away.

Hertsmere Community Safety P brings a range of organisations joined-up and strategic approa and disorder issues in the boro

Here for you this Christmas

For most people, Christmas and the New Year is a time of joy and fun. We get to have a well-earned break from work, to spend time with family and loved ones, and create long-lasting memories. Sounds perfect, doesn’t it?

Unfortunately, this is not the case for everyone. For many, the holiday period can be an incredibly anxious time and, sadly, this can lead people to really fear it.

Increased stress and financial pressures, excess alcohol, family arguments and being forced to spend time with people we may not choose to be with, can all translate into an increased risk of domestic abuse.

Herts Domestic Abuse Helpline is here for you. It offers a FREE and CONFIDENTIAL support and signposting service to anyone affected by domestic abuse. The helpline is open over the holiday period, if you need to speak to someone. There is also a confidential email service available, if calling is not an option.

Help and Advice

Website improvements

Our website is being updated with the mobile user in mind and to meet new legal accessibility regulations being introduced later this year.

We have been working hard to ensure our webpages are up to date before we move our content over to the new system, which will bring improved functionality and better search facilities.

Finding the information you need will be easier, thanks to improved navigation and search functions. The design will be mobile responsive and fully accessible for all customers, which means all of our communities will be able to fully engage with our web content.

Food safety

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has launched a campaign to raise awareness of food safety and hygiene. It includes advice on food safety during a power cut, floods, cooking too much food, washing raw chicken and the difference between best before and use-by dates.
