The client’s brief asked for the whole of the downstairs of this house to have separate rooms but at thesame time be open plan for entertaining purposes. Herrington Gate’s answer was to use sliding pocket doors throughout, which could recess discreetly into the wall space, as though they had never been there. The materials used reflect that of the cabinetry in the corresponding rooms.
THE PAPERCLIP STAIRCASE This grand entrance hallway features a wrought iron staircase with stone treads flanked by an unusual 'paperclip' design to the balustrades and a polished stainless steel handrail. Sliding pocket doors lead to the day room.

Left: An almost identical, but clear glass, door takes you next door to the room for coats, with walnut cabinetry featuring similar vertical mirror stripes but with added linen trimming to the door panels.
Sliding pocket corner doors allow this study to be sealed off or elegantly opened up to the rest of the open plan living space in this contemporary home. The walnut and wenge doors match the materials of the partners desk and the cabinetry featuring mirrored sliding door storage.
A rich dark wood suited to the drama of the cinema, Macassar Ebony provides the focal point for this contemporary media room accessed via uber-sized sliding doors which are clad in walnut to match the furniture of the hallway side and leather to tie in with the cinema room.
The ceiling detail was designed, by Herrington Gate, to house outer and inner perimeter LED lighting.
Herrington Gate designed the sofa seating, shown here in party mode but which is designed to reposition into screen watching mode. Either side of the central console table with mirror above, the separate beer and wine bars, with wine and bottle coolers, can be concealed behind leather trimmed ebony doors which fold into recesses in the macassar ebony cabinetry.
When closed, the bar doors can be seen trimmed with grey hide, as is the inner face of the entrance pocket doors.
Sleek Entertaining A cohesive look was called for in this large T-shaped kitchen, day-room and dining area where Herrington Gate designed the whole scheme including ceiling and lighting features. Simple handle-less painted perimeter furniture, in the kitchen, combines with stainless steel, Iron Ore Silestone and walnut, which is echoed in the sliding double doors to the hallway giving the ground floor an open plan feel.
The kitchen area is dominated by a large feature island with curved breakfast bar top made from solid walnut and finished with burnishing lacquers for a high gloss sheen. The pendant lights have been organised to fall from the ceiling following the shape of the breakfast bar and reflect in the grey tinted mirrors above the Aga area.
Small chopping blocks nestle between the doors in the bowed larder and the 'burnished' lacquered finish of the walnut can be fully appreciated in this close up shot.
A bow-fronted double door full height larder is flanked by Sub Zero appliances. Horizontal stripes of mirror finish stainless steel add detail to the island area and are continued in the furniture plinths.
The island breakfast bar was expressly positioned so the client could enjoy the view through the corner window to the magnificent landscaped garden.
The handmade sofas feature a contemporary statement floating plinth, with the burnished finish to the walnut carried through from the kitchen furniture. Walnut and Mocha cowhide sofas and ottoman in the seating area were designed by Herrington Gate to complement the handmade bar stools in the kitchen.
Access this first floor gymnasium via a frameless glass pivot door allowing light to flood in from the landing. Simple white gloss furniture with mirrored shelving accommodates the TV and mini bar fridges.
WICKETS AND CHANDELIERS This Master Bedroom suite consists of 3 distinct areas within a large open-plan space. Contemporary vertical ‘wicket stump’ style screens are carefully placed to define the different areas of bedroom, Dressing room and Bathroom, whilst maintaining the open plan flow of the room. Feature contemporary chandeliers illuminate reading and jewellery areas.
The walnut bed frame is headed by a complete wall of landscape leather pads and tinted mirrored panels. The bow-fronted ottoman at the base of the bed ties in with the floating bedside tables.
In the dressing room, the sliding wardrobe doors are painted in Farrow and Ball’s Elephant’s Breath to contrast with the rich walnut and a deep studded long stool serves for putting on shoes.
At the other end of the dressing room, the island is elegantly lit from above with a chandelier to match that of the bedsides and seating area, and the wicket stump divider leads the eye through to the open plan bathroom.
The ensuite echoes the use of walnut and features a floating twin bowl vanity unit, with the mirrors above concealing wall recessed cabinets, flanked by Porta Romana wall lights. The private toilet and shower areas are accessed through frameless tinted glass doors to the left. The bow-fronted bath panel and the vanity unit are topped with Iron Ore Silestone.
CAMPAIGN GUEST SUITE Colonial style louvred screens, made from tropical wood wenge, demarcate the areas of this guest suite offering a feature wall behind the bed with dressing area behind housing furniture made in Corian. Campaign style legs to the bedside tables blend into the colonial look
The same louvred screens replaced the original conventional wall and doorway to the ensuite, giving a semi-open plan feel.
All electrical and water services were concealed inside the wenge framework.
