Dear Fellow Book Enthusiasts,

Welcome to Books Wide Open, the summer reading initiative brought to you by Herrick District Library, in collaboration with our partners, Bluestocking Bookshop and Reader’s World.

In a world buzzing with activity, there’s something special about slowing down with a good book. This summer, we invite you to discover the joys of reading, not just for the thrill of it, but for the incredible benefits it brings — especially for our young readers.

As you flip through our summer booklet, you’ll find more than just reading lists and gameboards; you’ll uncover pathways to connect, discover, and create. Studies show that reading during the summer months helps children maintain and even improve their literacy skills, ensuring they return to school in the fall ready to excel. It’s not just about avoiding the summer slide; it’s about fostering a lifelong love for learning.

Our partners, Bluestocking Bookshop and Reader’s World, share our passion for promoting literacy and enriching our community through the power of stories. By joining forces, we’re able to offer a comprehensive reading program that spans across our community, making it easier and more enjoyable for families to participate.

This summer, we encourage you to make reading a priority for your family. Set aside time each day to explore the pages of a book together, whether it’s a classic adventure, a whimsical tale, or a fascinating non-fiction book about a topic that piques your interest. Visit our partner stores and library locations to discover new literary treasures and take advantage of the enriching programs and resources we have to offer.

Let’s celebrate the magic of storytelling and the incredible impact it can have on our lives. We can’t wait to welcome you with open pages and open hearts!

From the Director

FOR TEENS

herrickdl.org/blogs/ post/ teen-summer-read-ideas/

One of the best parts of summer is more free time and less homework — which means there’s more time to read. If you’re looking for some book recommendations, try checking out the teen librarian’s blog full of book lists and ideas.

Teen Art Gallery

Don’t forget, materials for the Teen Art Gallery will be available the first two weeks of every month. This summer you can:

• Participate in the 2nd annual bookmark contest

• Learn or show-off your cross-stitching skills

• Make some floral line folk art

Don’t see something that appeals to you? Feel free to email our teen librarian at teenlibrarian@ herrickdl. org for more suggestions.

Inkscape

This summer we are trying out a new kind of program. We will be doing a series program where we build on skills we learned the day before. Inkscape is a free graphic design alternative to Adobe Illustrator. So, if you’ve wanted to learn how to make your own stickers, logos, prints, or any number of graphic design projects, this series is a great place to start. Keep in mind it does require a four-day commitment. This program is taking place July 22-25. More details about this program can be found at herrickdl.org/events.

10

FOR LITTLES

We’ve created this year’s Summer Challenge so anyone can participate — with a little modification.

Some of the activities listed on page 14 will be difficult to complete with young children, so consider some of these activities instead:

LETTER SPLASH

Combine water play and learning by using foam letters or waterproof alphabet cards in a kiddie pool or bathtub. Encourage children to identify letters, spell simple words, or match uppercase and lowercase letters while splashing and playing. You can also add cups or water toys labeled with letters for interactive games. This activity builds letter knowledge.

BLAST FROM THE PAST

What were some of your favorite picture books when you were a child? Come to the library and see how many of them you can find and read them together. Talk to your family about what you loved about these books when you were younger. Or find one of your child’s favorite books and talk about what they love about it. This activity builds print motivation.

SMALL SONGWRITER

Sing a well-known children’s song (The Wheels on the Bus, The Itsy Bitsy Spider, etc.). Then change the lyrics to reflect something your child loves.

Ex: The little orange fishy swam sweetly in the lake. Down came the little boy with a piece of cake. He tossed in some cake and the fishy got a treat. And the little orange fishy now loves only sweets. This activity helps children learn to make meaning and find patterns in sounds.

ALPHABET SIDEWALK CHALK

Take advantage of sunny days by heading outdoors with sidewalk chalk. Draw large letters on the pavement and encourage children to draw pictures that start with that letter. For example, draw a big “C” and ask them to draw a cat, a cactus, a car, or a cloud. This activity practices letter recognition and fine motor skills for writing.

PUPPET PLAY

Pull out some paper bags, crayons, and a favorite book, and make some puppets to act out the story! Work together to put on a show for someone else — maybe even record it, so you can share it with a family member far away! This activity fosters imagination, language development, and narrative skills.

BONUS ACTIVITY

Attend a storytime at the library, at Bluestocking Bookshop, or in the community.
