Heroes Foundation Annual Report 2022

Page 1

Our MISSION

To provide meaningful support to cancer patients, education to promote cancer prevention and resources to advance research for a cure.

HEROES Community ,

It is my great pleasure to present the 2022 Heroes Foundation Annual Report. This past year, we continued our commitment to provide meaningful support to cancer patients, education to promote cancer prevention and resources to advance research for a cure here in Indiana.

In 2022, we provided valuable assistance to Hoosiers and their families facing the burden of cancer. We helped educate community members across the state on ways to reduce their risk of developing cancer. And we awarded research projects totaling $426K to leading organizations in the field of cancer research. (See page 7 for more impact totals.)

We are proud of all that we have accomplished this past year, but we know there is still much work to be done in the fight against cancer. All of us at the Heroes Foundation remain committed to doing our part.

I am humbled by the generosity of our donors and supporters. The impact they have had cannot be overstated — without them, this work would not be possible. We are deeply grateful for their support.

I invite you to explore our Annual Report, which further highlights our efforts in the fight against cancer over the past year. Together, we are making a difference.

LEADING Our MISSION

We are proud to introduce the Heroes Foundation Board of Directors. We are grateful to each person who chooses to join our efforts and help increase our momentum in furthering the Heroes Foundation mission.

Our Board comprises individuals from diverse backgrounds who are committed to making a positive impact in the fight against cancer. Each member is an expert in their respective field and brings with them invaluable insight and experience that guides our work.

As a governing body, the Board of Directors focuses on the high-level strategy, oversight and accountability of the organization, empowering our employees to oversee the day-to-day operations.

We have doctors, scientists, philanthropists, business leaders and other professionals who understand the importance of this fight and are passionate about doing what they can to make a difference. Together they form an impressive group of people who share a common goal — to support Central Indiana’s leading advocate for the cancer community. We look forward to working together towards this shared purpose.

INDIANA Needs CANCER HEROES

In 2023, 40,270 new cancer cases will be diagnosed in Indiana, and 13,660 Hoosiers will die from cancer. As such, our course is clear: The Heroes Foundation will continue to fight.

According to American Cancer Society Inc. estimates.

2022 was a HEROIC YEAR

$58,000 disbursed to support cancer patients and their families *

$426,400 disbursed to empower cancer research

$818,595 raised to support the Heroes Foundation **

*Includes funds disbursed to support partner programs including CompleteLife (IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center), Oncology Patient Assistance Fund (Community Health Network), Breast Health Summit (Pink-4-Ever Ending Disparities) and patient support at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. **Includes funds raised for cancer programs, research and operational expenses. 7

IMPACT ACROSS the INDIANA CANCER COMMUNITY

The Heroes Foundation strives to make a heroic impact on cancer patients, families affected by a diagnosis, and their loved ones and caregivers.

This community includes cancer researchers. Seed funding is critical to enable faculty at medical research institutions to pursue their work. Without this startup funding, they are incapable of obtaining larger grants and funding sources, which is why the Heroes Foundation medical advisory committee focuses on uncovering and funding the most promising projects at research institutions across Indiana.

The Heroes Foundation is very strategic when choosing which partner programs and researchers to support. The following represents a portion of the impact made in 2022.

HELPED PROVIDE WRAPAROUND SERVICES FOR ADULT PATIENTS

The Heroes Foundation made a $15K gift to the Oncology Patient Assistance Fund at Community Health Network to purchase gift cards and to fund transportation services and short-term housing for cancer patients. $30K was provided to the CompleteLife program at IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center to fund art therapy programming and cancer support groups.

ADVANCED RESEARCH AROUND CANCER RISK

The Heroes Foundation’s Catherine Peachey Fund provided $100K to Tarah J. Ballinger, MD, at the Indiana University School of Medicine to study the link between exercise and breast cancer incidence.

ADVANCED RESEARCH AROUND CANCER DETECTION

Nawal Kassem, MD, at the Indiana University School of Medicine was named the latest Susan J. Patrick Heroes Cancer Research Fund Fellow. She will receive $14K annually from 2023 to 2025 to study hereditary cancer through cascade testing.

8

FURTHERED RESEARCH AROUND CANCER PROGRESSION

Through the Catherine Peachey Fund, $100K was provided to Dr. Laurie Littlepage at the Harper Cancer Research Institute at the University of Notre Dame to pursue her promising research on the mechanisms of cancer progression.

SUPPORTED WORK TO IMPROVE PEDIATRIC CANCER PATIENT OUTCOMES

Through Team JOEY, we announced a three-year, $30K funding commitment to Jennifer Belsky, DO, MS, to further her research on decreasing the detrimental side effects children and teens experience while receiving cancer therapy.

SUPPORTED THE PEDIATRIC CANCER PATIENT JOURNEY

The Heroes Foundation completed a $50K gift to remodel a patient room at Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital. Team JOEY volunteers delivered 500 LEGO sets to Riley Hospital (Indianapolis), Peyton Manning Children’s Hospital (Indianapolis) and Lutheran Children’s Hospital (Fort Wayne) to give to their young cancer patients.

ENABLED THE STUDY OF UNDERFUNDED CANCER TYPES

A gift of $70K allowed researchers at the IU Simon Comprehensive Cancer Center, led by Hari Nakshatri, Ph.D., Anna Maria Storniolo, MD, and Josh Manghelli, DO, to create an initial infrastructure to begin exploring male breast cancer.

EMPOWERED CANCER FIGHTERS

Team Heroes, the cycling/running/triathlon team associated with the Heroes Foundation, raced locally and across the country and participated in, volunteered for and gave to the Heroes Foundation, including through their annual Team JOEY LEGO Collection ride in July.

2022 SUMMIT PARTNERS

Heroes Foundation Summit Partners provide critical support to our organization throughout the entire year. These corporate partners are engaged in the Heroes Foundation in various ways and were represented at all five of our 2022 fundraising events.
