HUB Herning is a hub for public transportation in the mid-Jutland region

The new regional hospital in Gødstrup northwest of Herning city will open from 2019, and will have approx. 2000 hospital jobs added, to 4000 jobs in total. The area around the new hospital is expected to be developed as a new area for housing and businesses. At the same time, the area of the old hospital in the city will be converted into a new residential district, most likely with creative and craft businesses as well.

In Herning Municipality, there were 87.593 inhabitants in January 2016. By area, Herning is the third largest municipality in Denmark. In Herning Municipality, there are many different housing options. You can live in an apartment in the city, a townhouse or a detached house. Apartment block or attached house. A house in a quiet village or a farmhouse in the countryside. Enjoy city life or residential areas with safe foot and bicycle paths. The smaller towns and villages are especially known for being active and close communities. The city of Herning is situated centrally in the municipality and is practically merged with the suburbs Gjellerup, Hammerum, Birk, Lind, Snejbjerg, Tjørring and Gullestrup, which are located around the city. Towns in the municipality include Sunds, Vildbjerg, Aulum, Kibæk and Sdr. Felding – in addition to a number of smaller villages around the municipality.

CULTURE AND EVENTS Every year Herning welcomes millions of guests. We have a varied selection of cafés, restaurants and shopping opportunities. The pedestrian street of Herning is centred around the city square (Torvet), and stretches from Østergade in the east to Bredgade in the west of the city centre. In the pedestrian street and small streets around it, you find specialty stores, chain stores, cafés and restaurants. The biggest mall of mid-Jutland, herningCentret, is located east of the city centre. Herning is a cultural centre, not only with the events in BOXEN, which has hosted more than 100 large concerts and sports events since 2010. Herning also offers a broad selection of cultural events of small or large size. In Birk you find two art museums; HEART, and the Carl-Henning Pedersen and Else Alfelt’s museum, which both have exhibitions on an international level. Also in Birk, you will find Ingvar Cronhammers’ enormous sculpture Elia, which has become a landmark of Herning. On top of this we have a number of music venues and theatres, like Fermaten and Team Teatret. The new library in the city centre has become a popular meeting point and study place - also many events take place here all year.

BEAUTIFUL NATURE Herning Municipality is known for its beautiful heath land. However, did you know that we have 1766 hectares of forest? By area, Herning is the third largest municipality in the country, and there are many beautiful nature spots around the municipality and also close to Herning city. For example, the nature centres Løvbakke forest and Præstkær, and the lignite fields in Haunstrup and Søby. In the bog area, Knudmosen, you are out in nature right next to the city, and at Skovsnogen Artspace in the southern part of the municipality, art and nature are merged. Even though we are placed in the middle of Jutland, there are plenty of options for enjoying water activities. We have swimming and fishing lakes, and rivers for a canoe trip for example. For even more action, we have a cable track for water skiing and wakeboarding at Knudmose Lake.

STUDENT CITY

With more than 9.000 students, including many internationals, Herning has the most students in Mid-Jutland. In the region, only Aarhus and Herning offer university programmes. The study environment of Herning is intimate; the education institutions are placed close to each other, and you can get cheap and attractive student apartments, for example in the city centre and in the campus area in Birk. Student associations and network groups offer different kinds of events and activities. The education programmes have a close co-operation with the local businesses, and good ideas are highly valued. Students can test and work with their business and innovation ideas in student incubator environments at AU Herning and VIA Design. With many students and more than 1 million event guests in the area every year, there are many opportunities to go out to cafés, bars and restaurants, considering the size of the city.
