Herne Bay Harriers 20th May 2023 Herne Presentation Day
1998
Since
Thank you for attending our club presentation day, on what we hope will be a sunny day at Herne, the best home of youth football in Herne Bay.
Before the Covid pandemic the clubs presentation day was traditionally held indoors at the Kings Hall, but that is not available to us this year due to a major refurbishment. We return to the Kings Hall next season.
On behalf of everyone at Herne Bay Harriers, we would like to extend a very warm welcome to all players, their families and our extended club family.

On behalf of Herne Bay Harriers, a very warm welcome to you all for this year’s presentation day, taking place again at our home ground here at Herne.
I would like to personally welcome our Club President Peter Tait and Julian Vernon, who will be presenting the Jonathan Vernon Award here today. This is the 3rd year we have held the Presentation Day at the ground and we know the players enjoy the inter club games on the pitches before the awards being presented and it’s always nice being outside. However, those of you who have been with the club a while will fondly remember the presentation evenings at The Kings Hall and with that in mind, next season we will be returning to the big stage and flashing lights of The King Hall, along with the slide show and disco. So please make a note of next years date - Saturday 8th June 2024 - for your diaries.
This season saw 16 teams represent the club in both the Faversham & District League and the East Kent Youth League. All teams have had competitive seasons and I have been fortunate to either refereed or have watched every team. The conduct of the players, managers, coaches and supporters has been excellent.
There has been much success in the various festivals held during the year so well done to all those teams. The club has run 4 festivals at Herne and most Saturdays the ground is packed full of teams and parents. The older age groups have adapted very well into 11-aside competition and we have a good representation of teams across both leagues in most age groups. Our aim as a club is to have an 11-aside ground to call our own, similar to here at Herne and the committee are always exploring this possibility and hopefully this will come to fruition.
We have continued to make improvements here at Herne with a new kitchen in the tea room and a lot of, sometimes unnoticed, maintenance work undertaken. Thanks to every one of you involved. We also managed to get a large FA grant towards 5 sets of new metal goals, with the remaining monies owed being paid by proceeds from the tea room. The tea room is always well received by both home and away teams and the card machine has proved popular. A big thank you and well done to Noah Ireton and Jack Whittaker for running this so well.
Next season we are hoping to keep all our teams moving forward into the

next age group. We will be adding an extra u9’s and at least 2 new u7’s. This will give us 3 teams in each of the u9/10/11 age groups and we may well see 20 teams by Christmas. Mini Harriers is as popular as ever as the starting point at the club, and I am very pleased at how well this has developed over the last 10 years. With Billy Surbey and Jack Hillier we have 2 excellent young coaches, joined by current young players Rosie, Isaac and Kyle who are with us each week which is excellent. Next season we have a few managers who will be running 2 age groups, which shows great dedication, Billy Surbey u7/u12’s and Paul Cloherty and Lewis Quinney the u7/u14s Colts.
We are also very lucky to have so many young managers and coaches, all recent ex-players, so a special mention to Scott Banks, Morgan May, Cameron Hayward, Billy Surbey and Lewis Quinney. We have also grown our number and developed referees this year, and now have a strong pool to allocate to our growing number of home matches each week with Liam Gray (aka Mike Dean) having had an excellent season.
We held our Annual Quiz Night in November and 12 teams made for a good evening. Next season it is being held on Sat 25th November, please come if you can as it’s always a good night and a great club fundraiser. There will also be a Race Night (date tbc)
All clubs rely on volunteers and sponsors, so a big thank you to all our team sponsors, without your support we would struggle, so again a big thank you.
Robbie Comber is our DJ today (a kind gift to the club) so thanks to Robbie who is already booked in for next June at the Kings Hall.
I would like to say thank you to Jamie Moon, u12s manager who is unable to continue next season due to work commitments and will be standing down. Jamie has managed the team for 6 seasons so big thanks Jamie for all your efforts over this time. It’s great to know the team will be continuing with new managers.
Before I sign off, the club is run by its management committee , which has been very loyal and long serving for many years now. So a final thank you to Jon McKinlay (Vice Chairman and Club Secretary), Lisa McKinlay (Club Treasurer), Rachel Bramley (Child Welfare Officer), Sam Surbey (Social Media) and Dan Surbey, Paul Cloherty and Matt Harvey as club officers.

Mini Harriers continues to be a major benefit to the overall health of the club. It provides a fantastic entry point to football, and the numbers of children attending continues to grow year on year.
Children enjoy fantastic value football in a safe environment, run by qualified and experienced coaches, whilst parents get the opportunity to relax with a hot drink and a bacon roll.
As well as our experienced coaches we are delighted to be supporting and providing experience to the the next generation of coaches. This season has seen Kyle assisting, alongside Rosie and Issac, both members of U14’s team, volunteering at Mini Harriers as part of their Duke of Edinburgh award.

Due to the success of Mini Harriers, the club are able to start 2 teams at U7 in the Faversham league next season. This is first time we’ve been able to start 2 full squads at September, and is a clear benefit of the clubs investment in Mini Harriers. There is also the possibility of a 3rd team who could join at Christmas.
The current year 1’s have already had a lot of practice matches against other local teams and we look forward to seeing them out representing the Harriers at U7’s
Good luck next season

Our home ground at Herne is the perfect venue to host league tournaments and we are happy to be a venue of choice for the Faversham league festivals for all the mini soccer age ranges.
“…….We attended your football festival yesterday, please pass on our thanks to the organisers it was really well organised and the perfect location.”
At the start of the season we hosted festivals for U10’s and U7’s and then in the spring we hosted the U8’s and U9’s. Many tournaments have seen the medals decided via a few nervous penalty shoot outs!
Harriers also hosted the East Kent Youth League U12 Charles Ridge memorial cup final.

Festivals
The club continue to invest in our excellent facility at Herne, which is the base of all teams from the Mini Harriers through to U12’s.
This season we had to replace the roof by the top pitch, having suffered extensive storm damage. We removed one of the changing rooms which allowed for a dedicated referee changing area, but also a much need expansion to the tea room. Despite the poor weather, the pitches are now regularly cut using last years purchase of a sit on mower. Thank you to all the volunteers who put so much effort in week in week out to enable the children to be able to play.
Our main investment this year has been the purchase of 5 pairs of brand new goals. These cost £8,800 and we were very fortunate to receive a large grant from the Football Foundation. The goals are excellent, with nets in club colours, and will last for many years to come.
