The Virginia Tourism Corporation has brought an oversized LOVE artwork to the Herndon Festival as part of a state and local partnership to promote tourism. The artwork, which is 16 feet long and more than 6 feet high, is part of the Virginia is for Lovers campaign and promotes the message that love is at the heart of every Virginia vacation. Visitors can come see the LOVE on display at the Herndon Festival through June 4. Visitors are encouraged to take a picture in front of the artwork and share it on Facebook at Facebook.com/VirginiaisforLovers or on Twitter, using the special hashtag #LOVEVA.

Are you ready to have some FUN? It is time to get out with your friends and family at the 37th Annual Herndon Festival! So many people come to Herndon to be a part of this Festival. It is known as the largest free event in Northern Virginia. The Herndon Parks and Recreation Department staff work year-round to produce this time-honored tradition filled with carnival games & rides, music, and vendors for all ages to enjoy. This brochure is your comprehensive guide to all the festival’s activities and highlights. For up-to-the-minute information, be sure to “Like” us on Facebook and “Follow” us on Twitter @herndonfestival and at Herndon_Parks on Instagram. Thank you to everyone who has supported the Herndon Festival over the years, which started as a small one-day community celebration, and is now a destination special event. Don’t worry about parking at the festival – ride the free shuttle bus! Leave your car and take advantage of our free shuttle service or free bike valet. Stops include Worldgate Drive and Herndon High School, where you can pick-up the shuttle, and it’ll take you right to the festival! If you’re riding your bike, let us watch it at the Bike Valet while you ride the rides! Who doesn’t love live FREE music? We do! The 37th Annual Herndon Festival features four days with a full schedule of entertainment on three stages with acts for the whole family, so there is always something to listen to and watch. We have music to suit your energy level, either put on your dancing shoes, or grab your lawn chair or blanket to relax – just get there to enjoy your favorite music. Do you like great music with a twist? Saturday night we suggest you catch Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band for a unique take on the Beatles’ songs we all know and love. Combine the beauty of strings with a bluegrass twist and add a voice that rivals McCartney! If you like a rousing good time, catch the American Rogues, Celtic rock at the HMC Stage on Saturday at 7:30pm. In between bands, or while drifting from one stage to the next, you should fill your belly with a treat from one of our many food vendors. From your favorite deep-fried delicacies to a classic cheese steak or gyro, there will be plenty of delicious options for you to choose from, including fresh smoked BBQ and Caribbean style food. Or, visit one of our food trucks in the new food court located by the Depot Stage. Don’t forget to wash it all down with one of our many beverage choices, ranging from smoothies and lemonade, to beer and wine.

Stop by and Thank Our Generous Sponsors and Partners Sponsors provide the Herndon Festival much more than financial and in-kind support. They help to bring new and entertaining elements. Make sure you stop by our sponsors booths, learn about their services and products, and thank them for the support they provide to this community event. DC Fray will be with us for the whole festival. Kick back and play with your friends, family and DC Fray staff – for free. They will bring a variety of oversized lawn and board games. You can find DC Fray and the games on the Depot Stage Lawn Thursday–Saturday and on the HMC Stage lawn on Sunday. Be playful! On Friday, Cigna will be at the intersection of Lynn & Station Streets offering complimentary biometric screenings (BMI, Blood Pressure, Blood Glucose and Cholesterol) to Herndon Festival attendees. See what kind of progress Junction Square has made in a year! This new retail and residential development will have staff by the Depot Stage to tell you about this project. Let’s play ball, fun games, and win prizes with the Washington Nationals street team. The Nats staff will be available to answer your questions about the rest of the season and tickets for future games will be on sale. Silver Line Metro will be on hand to share news about the Back To Good program and transportation surrounding the Silver Line. Do you love money? Grab as much fake cash as you can inside PNC Bank’s money machine! Look for them at the intersection of Lynn and Station Streets. Then stop by GEICO’s booth, and take a selfie with the gecko. If you’re down in Kids’ Alley, play an interactive game and learn more about saving for college by visiting with folks from the Virginia 529 College Savings Plan. Walk up and down Pine Street, and sample the vendors’ free products. Who doesn’t love that?
Downtown Redevelopment and the Future of the Herndon Festival The Town of Herndon is negotiating with Comstock to redevelop 4.675 acres of land in historic downtown Herndon. The redevelopment envisions a mix of retail, office and residential development, to include four-story mixed-use/residential structures; three-story mixed-use/ commercial structures; a jointly-funded public/private parking structure; an arts center and more. Once the project gets underway, we expect there to be some changes to the Herndon Festival. Change is not new to the Festival – growing from a one-day to four-day event, incorporating the HMC Stage and green in 1995, and redesigning the children’s stage to the current Kids’ Alley are just a few developments in the last 37 years. While it may look a little different, in the coming years we are committed to retaining the cherished event as Herndon’s own celebration of summer. Your thoughts and ideas are welcome at parksandrec@herndon-va.gov.

7:30-9:30pm Depot Stage The story of Strung Like A Horse starts when Clay Maselle horse-kicked his way into a world in which he knew he would never belong. In time, he discovered he was not alone. There were other hillbilly misfits living undercover all around him. A born leader, he found four others like himself and they became an inseparable unit. Seeing as how they weren’t employable, they turned to the only thing all of them were actually good at…PICKIN’! Several years and many thousands of miles later, Strung Like A Horse, now a well-oiled machine, gallops into Herndon. Don’t miss their signature gypsy grass sound and fiery hot, high-energy stage show. These junkyard dogs bring “Honest, playful, head-banging interactive fun.” Stage Sponsors & Partners
Rising Star Program – Enjoy a variety of unique performers There’s a point in every band’s evolution where they are not a headliner but they have moved past playing neighborhood cookouts. The Rising Star provides a place for local and regional bands who were well on their way and need a place to shine at the Herndon Festival. The programs starts at 10am on Saturday with The Herndon High School Battle of the Bands winner - Say What, performing blues covers. The Depot Stage will be hopping until 6pm with eight up and coming bands, it’s a place you can find talented original artists.

6:30-7:15pm Café Stage Staying at the apex of the Mid-Atlantic region’s competitive blues and roots music scene for a career that spans three decades isn’t easy. But that’s what Bad Influence has done — even while extending their reputation across the country-thanks to wildly entertaining, high-energy performances, extensive airplay, and three well-received albums. This four-piece group featuring guitarist Michael Tash, harmonica ace and singer Roger Edsall, bassist-vocalist Bob Mallardi, and drummer David Thaler are unabashed crowd pleasers thanks to their expert ensemble playing, strong melodies, addictive grooves, sly original song writing, and sheer intensity.
Crowded Streets-The Dave Matthews Band Experience 7:30-9:30pm HMC Stage
With a sound as maneuverable as theirs, shifting easily from Celtic to jazz to folk-rock to acoustic funk, recreating the experience of a Dave Matthews Band concert would seem daunting to most. Many have tried. Crowded Streets excels at this feat, bringing world-class musicians from the same landscapes that spawned the original quintet. Crowded Streets wants to make sure there’s something for everyone at every one of their performances! They strive to entertain and make you wonder if you are lucky enough to be at a Dave Mathews Band concert in Herndon.
Rico Monaco Band
7:30-9:30pm Depot Stage Rico Monaco Band is a rock-based band hailing from Orlando, Florida that deftly mixes pop, Latin, world and jazz influences. You can expect to hear award winning Latin Rock and Classic Rock covers delivered in Spanish and English. Rico Monaco Band has performed onstage with wellknown artists and has opened concerts for major acts, both nationally and internationally.

SATURDAY The American Rogues
7:30-9:30pm HMC Stage Renowned for their musical skill, high energy music, and quick wit, The American Rogues electrify audiences on three continents. If the 78th Fraser Pipe Band sat down with Wolfstone, Afro Celt Sound System, and the Waterboys, and then asked some friends from a symphonic orchestra and a Japanese Taiko group to join them, the resulting sound might resemble the AMERICAN ROGUES. This band is fast becoming a household name, loved by young and old of all backgrounds. Because of their world class musicianship and their affinity for the Armed Forces, the American Rogues have performed with the U.S. Air Force Symphony Orchestra in Italy, Spain, Japan, and Guam, and now we are fortunate to welcome them to Herndon.
Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band 7:30-9:30pm Depot Stage
Bands have been covering Beatles tunes for decades, but none like Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band. Imagine the music of the Fab Four shakenup with infusions of bluegrass and jazz, and topped off with a classical twist. The result: a satisfying musical cocktail! What if…the Beatles were actually from somewhere in the Black Mountain Hills of South Dakota? Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Bluegrass Band is a collection of four very different musicians creating a new sound from the greatest music ever written by the greatest band ever. Their repertoire features new and innovative takes on songs like Eleanor Rigby, Back in the U.S.S.R., Come Together, Blackbird, and many more.
