County Girls Prep Basketball Ranking

Week 3 of the regular season for prep girls basketball in the state of Florida begins this week and we here at the Hernando Sun want to give you the Hernando County reader all the insight you can get during the 20182019 campaign. We will be doing a Top 5 ranking of the five teams within Hernando County. We now take a look at the Hernando Sun Top 5 Prep Girls Basketball Poll heading into Week 3 of the regular season.

No. 1 Weeki Wachee (7-0, 3-0): No Hernando County team has looked better in the first couple of weeks than Weeki Wachee, as the Hornets are off to a 7-0 start and have picked up some impressive wins along the way. Weeki Wachee has defeated the likes of neighboring Nature Coast and Sunlake in the past week.

No. 2 Hernando (4-2, 2-0): If there’s one team surprising everyone right now, it would have to be Hernando. Though before the regular season began, the Leopards expected to make a jump. At this point, though early, Hernando has to be happy with the results through six games.

Appalled that 22 veterans commit suicide every day, Gus Guadagnino began Veterans Heat Factory (VHF) to support Hernando County veterans. The program, free to local veterans, offers a wide range of services. Volunteers work with veterans to provide them the help they need. VHF depends on community involvement with community support.

Automated trash pickup in 2019 (Brooksville, FL) Hernando County has a contractual agreement with Republic Services to collect residential garbage for all unincorporated areas of the county, this excludes City of Brooksville residents. In 2019, Republic Services will begin providing automated service. As part of the automated service, every Republic Services customer will receive a new garbage cart for free. The carts are designed to fit specialty side-loader trucks that use an automated arm to lift and empty garbage from the cart. This new service will make collection easy and hassle free, improve safety of the collection process and increase efficiency to keep costs down.

Starting in January, Republic Services will begin providing new carts to its approximately 60,000 customers. Instructions will be included explaining how to place the cart next to the road and other pertinent information. The week of February 4, Republic Services will begin implementing this service. It is important to remember that the new carts must not be used prior to February 4.

Carts will be clearly marked with a unique serial number that is assigned to the address of the

residence. If a customer moves or needs to stop service, they must notify Republic Services.

- Customers in the universal collection area, the cart stays with the house - Customers in the subscription area, Republic Services will collect and store the cart As part of the new service, additional routes will be added to make the garbage collection process more efficient. Customers’ current garbage, recycling and yard waste pick-up days will change. Republic Services will notify its customers of the new schedule in January.

Customers may continue to use their existing carts for yard waste pickup; otherwise, unwanted cans may be recycled at one of the three solid waste facilities.

Analysis. The board approved 5-0.

Citizens did present for comment, beginning with Marilyn Pearson-Adams, who represented the Greater Hernando Chamber of Commerce and local realtors. Pearson-Adams brought handouts for the board, however did not display any for presentation.

Mentioning again that the proposed projects are a matter of state law, Pearson-Adams implored the board to consider the citizens that will be affected by higher taxes to reach for funding mechanisms which will offset these costs the most.

New regulations are taking effect on the type of septic systems that can be installed on properties within certain environmentally sensitive areas - specifically they must be nitrogen reducing.

Jay Sartor of Cliff’s Septic Services spoke about the differences between active and passive systems.

According to Sartor, there is no established documentation that the passive systems function as designed.

Passive systems will not last forever, and the materials will need to be reclaimed in the future. “This means in 10-15 years … you’re going to go to someone’s house, dig up their front yard, and install another system.”

Sartor also said that passive systems would need to be inspected to ensure that they are compliant with what’s known as the NSF-245 reduction qualification.

Prominent area resident Jim Kimbrough praised Senator Wilton Simpson for securing funding for projects such as these.

Bob Eaton with Artistic Homes, and Chairman of the Nature Coast Builders’ Association described all the information as “Very confusing, with a lot of moving parts. All of it bad.” Eaton clarified that existing homes do not need to upgrade their septic systems before January 4, 2019, but that new homes must be built in compliance.

Regarding Jay Sartor’s assessment of passive systems, Eaton said that the size of the system itself will not fit on an average lot in Spring Hill, leaving the best choice being a high-performance system, which comes with a cost increase of $1215,000.

“People are not going to pay that,” Eaton said, “And it’s going to shut us down.”

All commissioners expressed frustration at the current circumstance; the state has handed down an unfunded mandate, and citizens who will be required to pay amounts beyond their means face foreclosure.

Commissioner Allocco suggested that the original amount of homes (2,200) be considered in the funding request, rather than just 450. The commissioners deliberated about the number of homes and final request from the legislature. Commissioner John Mitten motioned to stick with the conversion of 450 homes, and asking for $13-million from the state. “It’s best not to eat the entire elephant in one year,” he said, meaning that the state match could come in much smaller, and the commission will be able to better see what they’ll need to consider in the future.

The motion passed unanimously.

CAPODANNO, DARYL WAYNE YOB: 1989 CHARGES: BATTERY Arrested at: 12/05/2018 12:24 EVERGREEN AVE, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34613 Arrest Summary: On December 5, 2018 I was dispatched to Evergreen Ave, Brooksville, Hernando County, Florida in reference to a battery.

Upon arrival I made contact with the victim who advised that she and her son, the defendant, were in a verbal argument over his disorganization and cleanliness.

The victim advised that the defendant began to curse at her and display extremely aggressive behavior. The victim advised that she told the defendant that she no longer wanted him living at her residence and he would need to find somewhere else to stay.

Victim advised that the defendant then got extremely close to her and began to poke her in the forehead, above her right eye with his left pointer finger, against her will, and yelled, “F*** You”, repeatedly.

I then made contact with the defendant, who kept interrupting my interview with the victim and was very agitated. The defendant admitted to being in a verbal argument with his mother and when asked if he touched her he stated, “No, I know the system, I know how domestic violence works. So, no.”

An inquiry via the Comprehensive Case Information System (CCIS) revealed the defendant has had a few prior convictions for domestic battery in Pasco County. The most recent being 2/11/2013 for felony battery (court case #512013CF000985CFAXWS).

The defendant was then taken into custody without incident and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center without incident. The defendant was given a felony arraignment 01/04/2019 and is being held on a no bond status.

BLVD, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34601 Arrest Summary: On 12/05/2018, I responded to Parole and Probation located at 20144 Cortez Blvd, in reference to an agency assist for a transport for the defendant, Sarah Graziano.

After placing the defendant into custody, at my request; I asked Parole and Probation Officer, Sharene to conduct a search incident to arrest. As Sharene began conducting the search, the defendant spontaneously made an utterance, “I think I actually might have meth in my bra”. At this time, Officer Sharene located a small plastic baggy of crystal like substance to be in the defendant’s bra.

The crystal like substance was then field tested via my agency issued Narco test kit and tested positive for methamphetamine. The methamphetamine was later weighed via my agency issued scale, Ohaus scale, model number C305-P, serial number 23392, and weighing a total packaged weight of 0.7 grams.

The defendant was transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident and issued a court date of 01/04/2019 in courtroom E at 0830 hours with a total bond of $5,000.00.

The defendant stated that while in the KFC drive thru, he became involved in a verbal argument with the subjects in front of him in the line due to them taking too long. The defendant advised that after the driver of the vehicle called him a “f*** face”, he exited his vehicle and approached the subjects driver door where he made contact with the driver. The defendant further advised that he then reached into the subjects vehicle through the open front driver side window, at which time he grabbed the driver by the wrist. The defendant informed me that after he grabbed the subject, he then realized that he had “messed up” at which time he let guy and returned to his own vehicle.

Contact was made with the victim, Travis. Travis advised that he was ordering food in the drive thru, when the defendant began yelling at him that he was taking too long. Travis advised that he then called the defendant a “f*** face” at which time the defendant exited his own vehicle and approached Travis’s driver side window. Travis stated that the defendant then reached through his open window while the driver door was still closed, and grabbed onto his left wrist, all while he was yelling and cursing at him. Travis advised he did not consent to being battered by the defendant.

The incident was also observed by Travis’s girlfriend (Nadia) and KFC manager (Joseph). Both Nadia and Joseph stated that they observed the defendant reach into the open drive side window of Travis’s vehicle, before battering Travis by grabbing on to him.

At that time the defendant was placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident and charged with burglary of a conveyance with battery. The defendant was issued a bond of $25,000.00 and given a court date of 01/04/2019 at 0830 hours in courtroom E.

defendant, Michelle Lee Walker. The verbal turned physical when Walker punched Wanda against her will in the face. Wanda then walked into the residence and sat down on her couch. A few minutes later Walker entered the residence and began punching Wanda on and about her head and face.

This incident was observed by the second victim, Kaleigh. Kaleigh witnessed Walker hitting Wanda, so Kaleigh attempted to pull Walker off of Wanda, at which point Walker punched Kaleigh against her will in the chin. Walker then left the house and went to her RV parked behind the house.

The defendant agreed to complete the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus Test, which Indicated he was Impaired. The defendant refused to complete the Walk & Tum Test and One-LegStand Test. The defendant was arrested for DUI. I transported the defendant to the Hernando County Detention Center where I requested two samples of his breath. He agreed and the results were .245 and .244 (grams of alcohol per 210 liters of breath.)

The defendant’s driver’s License was also supposed.

When asked if he was aware of the suspension he stated, “Yeah, I know.”

Nichols was arrested on the warrant and transported to the District 1 office for questioning in regards to the construction site burglaries.

During questioning, Nichols confessed to committing numerous construction site burglaries.

Nichols showed detectives several home sites that he burglarized. He told detectives some of the stolen materials were located at his Indian Trails Road home.

Detectives recovered numerous stolen materials from Nichols’ home.

All told, Nichols admitted to three construction site burglaries currently under investigation and four additional burglaries that had not been reported.

Nichols’ bond was set at $35,000 on all seven Burglary Construction charges.

The Dec. 3, 2018 Brooksville City Council meeting run down Invocation and Opening The Brooksville City Council held their first regular meeting after the election. To begin the meeting, outgoing Mayor Betty Erhard invited Associate Pastor Trent Icenogle from Brooksville Church of the Nazarene to give the invocation before the Pledge of Allegiance.

City Manager Mark Kutney recommended that the council members offer their changes to the agenda order. Erhard requested Citizen Input to be moved before the selection of officers. Council Member Joe Bernardini made the motion to approve the change, and Vice-Mayor Robert Battista made the second.

This change was approved 5-0.

Oath of Office Administered The Honorable Judge Kurt E. Hitzemann administered the oath of office to newly elected council member Pat Brayton and returning members Robert Battista and Betty Erhard. Each will serve on the city council for four years, and their term will end 12/05/2022.

Citizen Input Donna Morran appreciated seeing Erhard at local events and compared this to the lack of attendance by council members in previous years. Morran gave Erhard credit also for being the only woman on the council and being receptive to citizen concerns.

Erhard should be selected as mayor again, she said, and Bernardini should be the vice-mayor.

Ryan Malloy, Executive Director of Brooksville Main Street Program, gave the council a personal invitation to the Christmas events and tree lighting ceremony held on Thursday, Dec. 6, 2018. The 24-foot tree at City Hall is “a step up” from the tree just one block away at the courthouse. Decorations were ordered and will arrive before Christmas, just not in time for the tree lighting. Malloy thanked the council members who attended Small Business Saturday. He singled out Kutney, stating the business owners were very interested in meeting him.

Jeff Mayhood said he agreed with Morran’s statements and he complimented Erhard for her helpfulness and the way she shows she cares about the citizens. He liked her availability, even via social media.

Mayhood encouraged the council to keep Erhard as mayor.

Ivy Cordell thanked Erhard for being attentive of her concerns and for “being present” while she listens.

She discussed the issue of the Quarry gate and asked for clarity to close out the issue. Cordell stated she understood the issue with liability and that there is a 50/50 arrangement between the City and the Enrichment Center to pay for costs involved with vandalism.

She is willing to compromise but needs answers.

Bernardini stated the agenda lists discussion about the Quarry.

Selection of Officers Battista nominated council member William Kemerer as mayor. No other nominations for mayor were offered. Battista moved to close the nominations.

Bernardini asked Kemerer whether he could accept.

Last year, Kemerer declined. This year, he said he is free to accept. Bernardini seconded the motion to close nominations. Kemerer was appointed mayor by unanimous vote.

Erhard and Kemerer switched seats and Kemerer thanked the council members for their confidence in him. Kemerer opened the floor for nominations for vice mayor. Brayton nominated Bernardini, and this was seconded by Erhard. There were no other nominations. Brayton made the motion to close the nominations, seconded by Battista. Bernardini was appointed vice mayor by unanimous vote.

Bernardini explained the council’s informal rotation system, where members are selected first as vice mayor and then the following year become mayor.

Since Kemerer had an obligation that prevented him from his turn as vice mayor, the council felt it was fair for Kemerer to be mayor this year.

Bernardini praised Erhard’s job as mayor and stated he hoped Kemerer could fill her shoes and attend local events as well as she did. Kemerer said it was something he was looking forward to.

Consent Agenda There was no discussion about any items in the consent agenda. Battista moved to approve the list of items, with Bernardini giving the second. The motion passed 5-0.

Resolution 2018-22 – Recognizing Council Member Brent Young Kemerer read the resolution detailing how Young became a council member: In July 2018 Natalie Kahler vacated her seat to run for a seat on the BOCC and Young submitted a letter of interest to serve the city’s needs. Young was appointed to the council and served until the election in November. The resolution praised Young for his attention to the needs of the city’s citizens by his participation in decisions and policies that positively affected the city. The resolution expressed thanks to Young for his willingness to be of service to the City of Brooksville.

The resolution was adopted by a unanimous roll call vote.

Young thanked the council for voting to approve him. Serving on the council gave him a better understanding of what the council really does for the city, he said. “There’s a lot of responsibility with the way you vote.” He stated that he may sit there again in the future.

First Reading of the Proposed 5G Ordinance Nancy Stuparich, attorney with the Vose Law Firm, explained Ordinance No. 898. The ordinance will remove the language pertaining to traffic light safety and create a new section for the new communication/ wireless facilities that the FCC and Florida Statutes require the city to allow. Local governments are restricted in what they can do, she said. The draft presented to the council included new language that the FCC clarified.

There was no discussion at this reading. Bernardini moved to approve the first reading of the ordinance and to schedule the second (final) reading. Erhard seconded the motion. Kemerer asked for public comment but no one approached the podium. By roll call vote, the motion passed 5-0. The second (final) reading is scheduled for 12/17/18.

Mowery Elevator Contract Renewal Mike Walker, Director of Parks and Recreation, recommended renewing the monthly maintenance contract with the Mowery Elevator Company at the Enrichment Center. The maintenance fee will be $125 monthly ($1500 annually) for five years with automatic renewal for an additional five years. The document in the agenda packet shows $150, but Walker stated this exceeds Mowery’s annual 3% increase, and they agreed to reduce the fee to $125. The city’s budget Fund 139, which is Repair and Maintenance Services, showed the annual fee as $1440, so this will have a $60 impact on this year’s budget.

Stuparich added that a sample of the city’s standard contract addendum was included in the agenda packet. The contract ensures that Florida Statutes are followed and that any conflicts are resolved in the Circuit Court of Hernando County.

Bernardini asked if the 3% increase will occur every year. Walker stated that it is at Mowery’s discretion, and that this was the first increase in 3-4 years.

Kemerer called attention to item #2 in Mowery’s contract addendum regarding Florida Statute and annual inspections. Because the elevator services only two floors and a maintenance contract is in effect, the Statute does not require the inspection. Quarry parking issue, thoroughly discussed Open gate hours limited due to liability issues

City Manager Mark Kutney opened the staff discussion segment. He said that following the Nov. 19, 2018 meeting, there were several concerns identified by the city attorney. They held discussions with the Parks and Recreation Board and with the Enrichment Center (ECI) to get recommendations for solutions. Resident Ivy Cordell, who runs a fitness group, has been vocal about the gate hours to the parking lot at the Quarry.

The Enrichment Center is responsibile for the gate and parking lot. Neither the Enrichment Center nor the city wish to take on additional liabilities associated with leaving the gate open additional hours.

Mike Walker, Parks and Recreation Director, recapped the events leading up to the Nov. 19 meeting and the issues raised by citizens at the meeting: the gate to the parking area is closed, but the walkway is always accessible.

The discussion resulted in further limiting the hours the gate would be open due to ECI liability concerns.

Instead of city staff opening the gate at 7:15 am, the gate would be opened by ECI when they start their day at 9 am.

The City’s contractual relationship with the Enrichment Center began in 2009. The ECI contributed $1.3 million in the form of federal and state funding to build the special needs disaster shelter which was completed in 2011.

The ECI, as the lessee, can determine the schedule for the vehicle gate. Walker stated that the preferred schedule is Monday through Friday from 9 am to 5 pm, remaining closed on the weekend due to liability concerns. A Parks and Recreation employee opens the gate at 7:15 am during the week.

As a courtesy, when vehicles are in the parking lot at 5 pm, the gate is unlocked to allow the visitors to leave, but this also increases potential liability.

Some areas of the Quarry site are concerning due to steep drop offs in holes, Walker said. Adequate signage would help.

Enrichment Center Director Deborah Walker-Druzbick scheduled a meeting for Nov. 28 with the citizens who expressed the most concern about access to the parking area.

Walker said the meeting was to discuss options, including an offer to that citizen to participate under the ECI umbrella as a support group and use the building for her fitness program.

Another option offered was to utilize the batting cages on the property and could be a possible solution if the fitness group could store equipment there. At the time of the meeting, the group seemed amenable to using the batting cage area but later stated they were not ready to make a commitment.

At the Parks and Recreation Board meeting later that day, a similar discussion was held. Walker stated the department needed recommendations to bring to the city council. He presented several solutions: Amend the language in the Enrichment Center’s 40-year lease relating to the parking lot area so that it absolves any liability to the Enrichment Center.

Research the use of batting cage area and make it available for public use.

Change the gate schedule to 7:15 am – 5:00 pm Monday through Friday and 7:15 am – 3:00 pm Saturday. The gate would remain closed on Sundays and holidays.

Open the gate from dawn to dusk and have the fitness group take on the responsibility of gate closure. The group stated this was not a workable solution, and Walker said he understood

the group’s reasoning. The park staff cannot accommodate that schedule either.

Walker asked the council to set a schedule for opening and closing the gate.

The signage should reflect a phone number citizens can call if they are locked in; to a towing company, for example. Contracting with a local service provider to close the park gate at dusk or at 11 pm (including the bathrooms) would cost the city $250 monthly, and the provider would be responsible to carry his own insurance. Installation of a perimeter fence is planned, Walker said.

Kutney agreed that the suggestions Walker gave would address the city attorney’s concerns. He added that the service provider in some areas is a park ranger, so having a local provider would be more cost effective than a full-time employee.

Kemerer stated there are two main issues: legal liability (addressed by the posts and cable wire fencing that Walker mentioned) and operations (access to the park). He invited Joe Mason, Enrichment Center board member and the Center’s attorney to the podium.

Mason said that ECI’s 40-year lease has an automatic 40-year renewal, so they have “exclusive occupancy of the center and its parking lot” on that site for a total of 70 more years, he said. Parking lot issues are not new. They were a problem when the golf course was operational.

Mason said a proposal at the time was to include additional property that could be converted into a parking area into the lease, but the city declined. Since then, the golf course has closed, and the parking area meets the Enrichment Center’s needs.

The contract between the city and ECI is clear. The parking lot is not public property. It is for the use of the Enrichment Center.

The contract does give the city access to the building for programs or other uses, as renters of the space.

The Parks and Recreation department handles the rental agreements, which include fees and proof of insurance.

Mason said the Center’s insurance provider will only cover parking lot incidents pertaining to the use of the Enrichment Center.

The Quarry is described as “an attractive nuisance” he said, which includes those who not only like to enjoy the Quarry but those who see an opportunity to be destructive. The insurance provider is not obligated to provide coverage in the event someone is hurt, if the Enrichment Center provides access. The proposed perimeter fence may not be enough, Mason said.

While it is willing to work with the city, ECI is the lessee of the property, and only the Center can set the gate schedule. As a concept, Mason said, if the city wants to provide someone to open and close the gate at certain times and will accept liability if there is damage or injury, then an agreement might be possible. However, any agreement would need to be reviewed by legal counsel.

After 5 pm, when the gates are locked, Mason agreed that there should be some way for a person to get their vehicle out of the parking lot, whether they call the sheriff’s department, fire department, or Walker. The intention is not to lock the city out, Mason said, but to work with the city in this area as much as they do in others.

For example, Mason explained the rental fees that Walker collects are divided equally between the City and the Enrichment Center. ECI is willing to compromise and is

concerned about statements that are not constructive, statements such as the city should simply make the decision without compromise. A separate, shortterm, renewable agreement could be made without changing the current lease agreement.

The city council would be better served by waiting until the attorneys presented a compromise agreement. “Any decision on any kind of issue like this by (the city) council would be terribly premature,” Mason said. “And somewhat blinded by the lack of input of counsel on both sides coming to you with an agreement counsel believes both is legal, enforceable, advantageous, and convenient.”

Some solutions have been presented, but Mason suggested that other ideas may be proposed. He recommended that the item be tabled again, promising cooperation from ECI so that the needs of both parties could be met.

Erhard asked about membership cost, which is $15.00 per year. Support groups are not charged fees to use the Center. If the fitness center had the proper insurance and could qualify as a support group, Mason said, they could have access as well.

Bernardini asked for clarification about a separate agreement. Mason restated the position that ECI has sole control of the parking lot due to the lease agreement, but they could arrange for the city to have access to the parking lot. The current contract allows the city to use the parking area for scheduled events that the two parties coordinate.

Battista stated he felt the lease agreement left out some important areas and the language was not clear, for example, the term “additional space.” At the time of the agreement, the company running the golf course was able to use the parking lot. Mason agreed, stating that the number of parking spaces the golfers used caused issues for ECI. The “additional space” referenced was for potential expansion if ECI obtained funding, but not parking.

Stuparich agreed with several of Mason’s statements. Referencing Walker’s list of suggested solutions, Stuparich said option #1 (Amend the language in the Enrichment Center’s 40-year lease relating to the parking lot area so that it absolves any liability to the Enrichment Center) is not recommended because the city will take full liability.

The grant for the building was based on approved site plans with parking designated for ECI use.

The fencing was discussed at the previous meeting and is taking action. While it will reduce the risk, its effectiveness is unclear based on the materials suggested. The operational issues will have to be discussed by the attorneys representing each party. Amending the lease to address parking is not recommended.

Battista stated that it appears ECI is not willing to have the parking lot used as it is now. County residents see the Quarry and parking area access as a right, he said. What he heard from Mason was that the parking lot is for people going to the Enrichment Center and the city can use the parking area only if it is scheduled and coordinated, not daily.

Kemerer said it appears that the current schedule was acceptable with the public having access during the hours already in place, unless ECI members are unable to park or if the situation becomes “burdensome” and increases ECI’s liability. The city cannot take on the additional liability either.

Bernardini remarked that he heard what Battista did: that ECI will have the gate open from 9 am to 5 pm for ECI guests only. According to the lease agreement, ECI is responsible for the parking lot and building. He did not think it was reasonable to pay a service provider to open and close the gate.

Brayton stated that in the past, this situation would be handled differently, with law enforcement responsible to open and close the gate. The arrangement with the Sheriff’s Office could work the same way, he said. The deputy could unlock the gate at 7 am and close it at 11 pm. Brayton said it would be a simple solution and ECI would have no problem with it.

Mason returned to the podium, explaining that it did cause a problem because of the liability.

Brayton responded that he understood that, but the easiest issue to resolve was the time the gate is open.

Bernardini said that even the fire department could open and close the gate, but it does not address ECI’s liability over any incidents that occur outside ECI’s hours.

Referring to the lease agreement and a letter provided by Mason, Battista confirmed ECI’s hours of operation as 9 am to 5 pm, Monday through Friday. If the city agreed to indemnify ECI, then the hours could be adjusted, but constitutionally, Battista said it was not possible.

Kemerer asked Mason if ECI was willing to maintain the current schedule, with a park employee opening the gate at 7:15 am and an ECI employee closing at 5 pm. Mason stated that ECI and the city communicate special events so they are not in conflict. ECI is willing to work out an arrangement with the city so the parking lot can continue to open at 7:15 am, Mason said, but “the devil is in the details.”

Kemerer reminded the council members that Parks and Recreation Department is planning changes to the Quarry area which will likely impact the Enrichment Center and the parking lot, and will require a broader discussion. For now, he said, an interim agreement is needed to maintain the status quo.

The initial step is signage and a contract with a towing company. When the Enrichment Center is closed, so is the parking lot. If the towing company is needed to unlock the gate, the vehicle owner will be charged. There was consensus from the counsel that because the Quarry is under the control of ECI, signage and a towing contract should be the responsibility of ECI. Kemerer asked for Risk Management to see if the proposed fencing solution would be appropriate and provide adequate protection as well as identify any other safety risks at the Quarry. Since this is the third meeting where safety issues at the Quarry were discussed, Bernardini suggested using temporary orange barricade fencing material to block dangerous areas.

Brayton disagreed, saying that Walker already priced the materials for the post and cable fence at $700. He moved to approve purchase and installation of the materials. Battista seconded the motion, which carried 5-0.

There was also consensus from the council to research the viability of using the batting cages since they can be accessed via the parking area at McKethan Park.

The city will no longer open the gate at 7:15 am.

The Enrichment Center parking lot will be open during business hours.

Many have been wondering about what Brent Gaustad has been up to after retiring from the Hernando County School District. Well he was spotted at the Brooksville Parade on Saturday in a festive suit atop a 4 wheeler.

An enormous small town parade, with over 103 entries- the parade is brought to the streets of Brooksville each year by the Brooksville Kiwanis Club. Master Sergeant Jose Infante, USMC, Ret, was honored as the parade’s Grand Marshall. Many came from nearby counties to enjoy the festivities.

Legendary Coach and Runner Ernie Chatman passed away two years ago. Ernie’s friend and fellow cross country coach Patrick Skipper had the idea to rename the portion of North Avenue east of Howell Avenue to Ernie Chatman Run in honor of his friend and Hall of Fame coach. He started the process shortly thereafter and two years later the idea came to fruition.

Mr. Skipper had promised that there would be no cost to the county or school for the renaming, so he turned to go fund me to pay for the new marquee panels. The go fund me raised $2,020 in around 12 hours even though only $1,700 had been requested. The additional money raised will be donated to Hernando High Hall of Fame.

Kemerer asked Stuparich if the service could be bid out. Walker stated that anything under $2000 did not require a bid. Walker recommended that the council “uncheck” the box agreeing to the additional $25 and to check the box in item #3 declining the annual inspection service.

Erhard made the motion to accept the agreement once the city attorney reviewed Florida Statutes and determined there would be no negative impact to the city, and with the changes discussed by the council.

Battista seconded the motion. It passed 5-0.

State Agreement for Improvements to Fire Station Walker stated the Legislative Funding the City was granted totals $353,150. This is to complete four public safety projects at the Brooksville Fire Department. The State provided an Intent to Fund agreement which requires the mayor’s signature.

Battista suggested that since another funding request is being sent to Tallahassee, Kemerer write a letter to the legislature thanking them for these funds. Kutney said he would help Kemerer draft the letter.

In response to Bernardini’s question about which projects were “shovel-ready,” Walker stated the bunker room and roof projects have already been “engineered” and are ready. New bay doors will only need to be ordered. The kitchen and bathroom upgrades will have to be bid.

Brayton asked Walker about the completion date, which the letter states should be done before the end of fiscal year 2019. Walker acknowledged this and stated that historically there is an understanding that the contract/project can take up to three years to complete. But, he said, the guidelines state that the project continues to completion, until funding is removed or until the money runs out. A catastrophic event could qualify as a reason the funding might be removed.

Brayton asked if any of the projects could be completed by June 2019, the end of the fiscal year.

Walker felt at least two would likely be finished then, with the roof replacement as the first to start.

Brayton then moved to have the mayor sign the agreement. Bernardini made the second. The motion was passed 5-0.

DPW has been working with the other staffing agency so long, Radacky said, that he is not aware if there is a contract with them. Since People Ready is a newer firm DPW took the time to work out contract details with them so that the language complies with the State of California’s requirements as well as Florida’s.

Kutney suggested tabling the item again to give time for him to talk with Radacky, finalize figures, and determine if they will ask to put the contract out for bid. Brayton made a motion to table the item until the council receives the additional information. Erhard seconded the motion, and it passed 5-0.

After reviewing the hourly rate of $13.39 which is paid to the staffing agency, who likely pays the employee less, Bernardini asked why they couldn’t just hire a full-time employee at around $12/hour. Brayton

said using an agency is more cost effective when looking at the benefits and taxes the city would be responsible for.

“Obviously we can’t keep anybody on the job, so there’s got to be a reason for that, other than the job,” Bernardini said.

Kutney responded with the minimum required salary for that position is $10.36/hour, and that may account for part of the hiring challenges DPW faces.

He has authorized a higher wage when the department did receive an application.

Kutney agreed to bring the council a more complete picture of what it would cost to hire a full-time employee, including salary and benefits.

Kemerer stated that if the person is not hired as a full-time employee, then using a staffing agency does represent a savings. Hiring a full-time employee includes approximately 50% more in additional benefits that come with being a government/city employee (such as vacation time accrual, 12 paid holidays, Florida Retirement System, etc.).

Current interim staffing needs are being met by another agency. Kutney was given authorization to continue the current practice of using the agency on a day-to-day basis until a company is awarded a bid.

There was no vote, only a consensus by the council.

More students look to Bright Futures They must also complete 100 hours of community service.

The report said the reason for the increase in the Bright Future scholars “cannot be fully explained at this time,” although factors may include more students qualifying through programs like the International Baccalaureate program, changes in qualifications for home-schooled students and higher SAT scores.

Former Senate President Joe Negron, a Stuart Republican who left office last month, made a priority of expanding Bright Futures, including covering 100 percent of tuition and fees in the academic scholars program.

Participation by students qualifying as Bright Futures “medallion scholars,” who must meet slightly lower standards, will remain relatively flat this year, dropping to 46,216 students from 47,740 last year. However, the program for the first time this year will cover 75 percent of tuition and fees for those students.

Both programs allow Bright Futures students to use their scholarships to cover summer classes.

Bright Futures also includes three smaller scholarship programs, along with the academic and medallion programs.

The popularity of Bright Futures may have an impact on the state budget, with the latest projection showing a total cost of $545 million this year, although lawmak-

ers only approved $520 million in the budget and related legislation. The cost is projected to rise to $583 million in 2019-2020.

Meanwhile, the new estimate showed more than 195,000 students will benefit from the state’s largest needbased aid program, known as “student assistance grants.”

The average award this year is projected at $1,378.

About 87 percent of that aid will benefit students attending public universities and colleges, but the remainder

TALLAHASSEE --More Florida students are taking advantage of beefedup scholarship programs that help pay for tuition, fees and books at state universities and colleges.

The number of students using Bright Futures scholarships, the state’s main merit-based aid program, is now projected to grow by 5.7 percent this academic year for a total of 99,483 students, according to a report published by the Legislature’s Office of Economic and Demographic Research. The report is based on a Nov. 30 estimating conference.

More students who have top test scores and grades are qualifying for and using the Bright Futures’ “academic scholars” program, which pays for 100 percent of tuition and fees and provides $300 for books in the fall and spring semesters.

The latest estimate shows a projected 52,179 students will qualify this year as academic scholars, up from 45,295 last year, or a 15 percent increase. That program will grow by another 9.5 percent next budget year for a total of 57,138 students in 2019-2020, the estimate showed.

To qualify for the program, students must have a 3.5 grade point average and score at least a 1290 on the SAT or a 29 on the ACT.

Also, more than 39,000 state residents attending private colleges and universities in Florida will benefit from the “Effective Access to Student Education” grants program --- which in the past was known as the Florida Resident Access Grant program.

The maximum award for those scholarships, which total $137 million, increased from $3,300 to $3,500 this academic year.

Jaguar Coffee approved for expansion incentives; will bring 12 new jobs (Brooksville, FL) At today’s meeting, the Board of County Commissioners approved a local job creation incentive and building and impact fee mitigation incentive for Jaguar Coffee Company, a commercial and industrial machinery repair, sales and back office operations for commercial espresso equipment and local coffee roaster. They intend to hire 12 additional employees in three phases from 2020 to 2022, at an average annual wage of $37,506 which is at least 115 percent of the County average annual wage.

“The company has outgrown its Linden Drive location and warehouse in Spring Hill,” County Administrator Leonard Sossamon explained. “They researched locations throughout the Tampa Bay Region and determined a site on Technology Drive within the Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport & Technology Center would best suit their company’s expansion needs.”

Jaguar Coffee Company intends to construct a 10,000 square-foot facility which will result in a capital investment of at least $1 million and should be operational in fall of 2019. The ground lease for their new facility will be for a period of 30 years with two ten-year renewal options.

The company currently employs 18 full-time workers, offers health insurance benefits, paid time off and 401K. Use a large pot over medium heat, combine beef and onions cook until meat cooked and your onions are soft. Add Stewed Tomatoes with juice, tomato sauce and paste, mix well.

Combine the rest of your ingredients, chili powder, garlic powder and ground black pepper to taste.

Bring to boil, reduce your heat to low, cover and let simmer for 15 minutes.

These are among the more than sixty Christmas Bird Counts being planned in Florida, and the thousands scheduled throughout the United States and other countries. Christmas Bird Counts have occurred annually for 119 years, and are the longest running citizen-science bird project. Every year volunteers count birds within designated areas, providing important data to assess the health of bird populations and to help guide conservation action.

The Brooksville Christmas Bird Count will occur on Saturday, December 15, and will count the quantity and variety of bird species within a circle with a 7.5 mile radius from Bystre Lake. Dodge recently celebrated her 30th anniversary as a PHSC employee. Through her long career, she worked with each of the college’s four presidents, from founding president Milton O. Jones, Ph.D., through current president Timothy L. Beard, Ph.D. Dodge was commended for her consistent outstanding professionalism, dedication and commitment to PHSC. “We are grateful for Dr. Musunuru’s ongoing support of PHSC students, said Lisa Richardson, Ed.D., PHSC associate vice president of alumni and college relations/executive director of the PHSC Foundation. “Countless students and many PHSC programs have benefitted greatly from his generosity.”

Phase 2 Hog Hunt Registration Begins Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 9 a.m.

The Southwest Florida Water Management District (District) will open Phase 2 hog hunt registration Tuesday, Dec. 18, at 9 a.m. The District holds a series of hog hunts on District lands throughout the year to help reduce the feral hog population.

What you need to know about Phase 2 hunts: Phase 2 will include six hunts that occur in January and February 2019.

Permits are transferable.

The single top producer on each hunt of Phase 2 will be placed on the District’s “top producer” list and will be contacted between March and October 2019 to take part in feral hog management hunts on an as-needed basis, free of charge.

Feral hogs, which are not native to Florida, can cause damage with their broad snouts and can leave an area looking like a plowed field.

They also prey on native wildlife, compete with native species for food and transmit diseases to other wildlife, livestock and humans. Additionally, hogs may facilitate the spread of exotic plant species by transporting seeds and/or providing germination sites through rooting.

The District has a three-phased hunting system. The first two phases of hunts have separate registration processes. The single top producer from each Phase 1 and Phase 2 hunt will be asked to participate in hog management activities for Phase 3.

Just Southwest of Inverness is located one of my favorite forests, the Citrus Wildlife Management Area, a part of the Withlacoochee State Forest.

Having practically grown up while hunting those woods, I’ve watched the property go through many cycles of change. Most of those changes have been great improvements, such as the prescribed burning programs, additions of acreage to the area as well the management practices implemented to conserve the deer herd.

Sadly, there is one thing has been troubling the property, and that is abuse. Unlike many of the state WMA’s, Citrus is not fenced off, or does it have designated points of entry.

Being so free to access, lowlife folks take advantage of that in order to dump their garbage and refuse about the perimeters of the WMA. I’ve been contacted by many of my readers, friends, such as Mick Gist of Inverness, who is sickened by the illegal dumping.

Well, enough folks have voiced their concerns to the Florida Wildlife Commission and our state Forestry Department, that the folks in Tallahassee have made it a priority to put an end to such practices. In a chance meeting with FWCs Lt. Matt Griffis, out on the Citrus WMA, I thanked him for the efforts he and his team of five officers are putting forth to put an end to that particular criminal activity.

Now folks, another way our WMA gets abused, is due to the off-roaders intentionally tearing up the trails. I can tell you how bad it had gotten when I have gotten my own truck stuck in the ridiculous ruts they have created. Thirty-plus years of driving this forest and I’ve only been stuck twice and both times earlier this year.

Forestry is due an awful lot of credit for their attempts at repairing the trails, their hard work and efforts have been amazing. Now, with Lt. Griffis and his men on regular patrol of the Citrus WMA, perhaps the illegal dumping and wanton destruction of the trailways can be gotten under control.

One thing I have been acutely aware of the over-abundance of coyotes in not only the Citrus WMA, but all of the WMA’s in the west and central portion of or state. Everywhere I go, I encounter their tracks and more than once I’ve come across the remnants of a recent kill. It seems the songdogs have really taken over and it’s up to us hunters, the true and original practitioners of conservation, to do something about it.

Hernando Christian soccer not just for the boys

“We want to get stronger,” said Coach Crawford.

Since 2014, Hernando Christian Academy (HCA) boys soccer team has struggled to fill the roster in order to compete within their district, but thankfully the girls stepped in to fill the empty spots.

Hernando Christian Academy is the only boys’ soccer team that is eligible to have both boys and girls on their roster in Hernando County.

According to the FHSAA rules which has been in effect for over a decade: 8.6 PARTICIPATION

BY GENDER 8.6.1 -Girls on Boys’ Teams. Girls may play on a boys’ team in a sport if the school does not sponsor a girls’ team in that sport.

8.6.2 Boys on Girls’ Teams. Boys may not participate on a girls’ team in any sport if the school’s overall boys’ athletic program equals or exceeds the girls’ overall athletic program.

8.6.3 Mixed Gender Teams. Team sports that have both boys and girls are required to compete in the boys division in that sport.

8.6.4 Florida High School State Championship Series. In an individual sport, girls may not participate on boys’ teams in the Florida High School State Championship Series when a sport is offered in the Florida High School State Championship Series for girls.

Soccer is one of the most physically demanding sports that requires endurance, speed as well as agility.

The girls on the HCA roster include: 7th grader Peyton Meyers, 8th grader Alyssa Lechugga, 6th grader Natalie Lechugga, senior Leah Grant, senior Elyse Maurette, Junior Audrey Woods, freshman Jayden Oring and 8th grader Isabella Oring.

Sisters Isabella and Jayden Oring are playing their first soccer season and share their experience thus far, “It’s good, it is harder but I like to play harder,” Jayden Orning said. “I think girls can do what boys can do.”

“I have to go out there with positive attitude and toughen through,” Isabella Orning said.

Coach Crawford may have suspected there was no coming back after the first half against Seven Rivers, but that didn’t let the team feel they were defeated. Crawford took this opportunity to move players around and showcase the players’ abilities.

“We are already down, let’s move the players around and see what works and actually moving the

The Lions took on Seven Rivers Christian Academy Tuesday after a tough loss against Academy at the Lakes (1-5) Monday. Seven Rivers dominated the Lions home field- closing out the 2nd half early with an 8-0 win over HCA. After just one day of practice in between games, HCA battled on their home field once again to face Universal Academy who are 5-1 this season, the Lions had to defend the territory more aggressively.

“They were very aggressive, very good with passing, but they were off side a few times so that worked to our advantage,” Elyse Maurette said. “[Our] defense really had to work hard at this game.”

Universal Academy dominated the goals in the first half and there were some great saves by goalkeeper Earl Rich. The second half Coach Crawford pulled Evan Klukowski off the field to play goalkeeper.

He blocked several goal attempts from the Falcons, however two goals made their win.

Overall the girls showed team strength and their defensive skills progressed from the previous game against Seven Rivers.

“Definitely more control over the ball,” Leah Grant said. “That is really what determines what happens and who wins the game.”

“Today I think the game went great, we did a lot of passing, one touch and two touch passes. We talked a lot and we were able to get the ball to the other side and almost score, and I thought that was great,” said Alyssa Lechugga “I thought we played as a team, we did exceptional,” Peyton Meyers remarked.

“I am proud of the way we worked together.”

Not only did the girls see

the difference they did on the field against Universal Academy, but the coach did as well.

“I am really psyched that the fact they played tonight the first half was the best half we have played together.” Jeremy Crawford said.

Crawford going into his 7th season as head soccer coach for HCA. “This year we have more girls than any other year and you can see they are tough,” Crawford said. “We got some girls on there and Jayden is one of them that definitely holds her own and thensome,” Crawford said.

“The way I grew up playing, I grew up playing English style soccer. That is how I know the game- so I coach that way,”Crawford explained. “There really isn’t any difference in training whether they are girls or boys, it’s the same.”

With this team in particular they are very new, some players haven’t played soccer before. Additionally, their top player, Senior Logan Wilhelm has sustained injuries and is out for another week. This creates a fresh approach in their game plans.

“We’ve talked about the season, we know it’s going to be a rough season,” Crawford said. “You’re going have some competitive games, you’re gonna have games that you get blown out.”

Keeping skills and player field communication in the forefront is key to reaching that one goal; to play in the districts.

“The whole season is for that one game, that’s your first game in districts.

It doesn’t matter if you’re 0-20, you still get to go play in the playoffs,” Crawford said. “That’s what you’re aiming for...when you get to that game- be the best that you possibly can be in order to give that other team the best game that you can.”

It all came down to one kick for Nature Coast in the Class 5A, Region 2 final when they faced Citra North Marion over three weeks ago in one of the biggest games in Hernando County prep football history.

The hopes and dreams of becoming Hernando County’s first football team to make it to a state championship game hung in the balance when the Nature Coast lined up for the field goal attempt. Their attempt though at history was shot down when the kick was blocked and returned for a touchdown, this ending Nature Coast’s run in one of the best seasons a team from Hernando County had ever experienced.

That was the story for Nature Coast when they fell 29-22 to North Marion, but it didn’t tell everyone how very close the Sharks were from coming all the way back to win the game.

Sharks’ running back Michael Weston put together one of the top performances in any region final played throughout the state of Florida, rushing for 288 yards on 44 carries and scoring three touchdowns.

North Marion ended up facing Cardinal Gibbons in the Class 5A state championship game and lost 48-10.

“I know it sucks for (the players) right now, but when they look back on this, they will see this a lot more differently than they do right now,” Nature Coast coach Cory Johns said after the game.

“This is a great football team.

It just sucks it had to end like this because I felt like we were the better football team.”

The Sharks do not have an easy road in front of them trying to get back on track, as they face Inverness Citrus, Holiday Anclote and New Port Richey River Ridge coming up.

No. 5 Springstead (1-5, 0-0): Another team that has fallen down the rankings because of a slow start is Springstead, whom

Sharks, with quarterback Fabian Burnett throwing for 1,041 yards, 13 touchdowns and zero interceptions on the year.

Burnett made some clutch throws all throughout the season and also added 760 yards rushing with his legs.

Sophomore running back Kinyatah Morgan is the top returner to the backfield for Johns and crew, with the tailback rushing for 377 yards this season. Morgan will very likely see a much increased role moving forward.

Another player to watch out for next season is sophomore Issac Edwards, who tallied 340 yards rushing. Both Morgan

and Edwards will be a duo that area teams will have to figure out the next couple years.

After the region final game nearly a month ago, many players took the loss hard, but Johns reminded them of how close they were to reaching states.

Johns also told them to remember the feeling because he plans to get Nature Coast back to the region final next season.

Downtown Brooksville lights up with the Christmas spirit

Brooksville resembled, to paraphrase the words of Randi Olsen, President and Artistic Director of Live Oak Theatre Company, a “scene from a Hallmark Channel special” on Thursday evening, December 6.

Stores were decked out in bright holiday decorations, delicious smells of food wafted through the air, happy sounds of children could be heard, people wore Christmas attire, vendors displayed and sold gifts and Christmas carols were sung. All that was missing was the snow.

Approximately 5,000 people attended the annual Christmas on Main Street event, surpassing past years’ attendance figures.

The evening included forty vendors representing local businesses and non-profit organizations, a showing of classic children’s Christmas movies and Patricia Boutique’s “Patricia’s Windows Come to Life.”

The highlight of the evening was a music and dance performance by Live Oak Conservatory students. And, of course, the lighting of the 35’ Christmas tree in front of the courthouse on Main Street.

and built the beautiful tree, along with a smaller 24’ tree that stands beside City Hall. Countless volunteers worked on the project, as well.

Randi Olsen and Terry Edwards, a vocal instructor with the Live Oak Theatre Company were the emcees of the entertainment portion. The talented pair also sang some duets.

The young dancers, under the direction of dance instructor Jane Russell Geddings, performed several lively numbers.

Ryan Malloy, Executive Director of Brooksville Main Street introduced local dignitaries that were present at the event.

Among them were Hernando County Commissioners Steve Champion, John Allocco, Wayne Dukes, John Mitten and Jeff Holcomb, as well as Deputy County Administrator, Jeff Rogers.

Mayor William Kemerer, Vice-Mayor Joe Bernardini, City Council members Betty Erhard, Pat Brayton and Butch Battista represented the city of Brooksville. Sheriff Al Neinhuis, Clerk of the Circuit Court Don Barbee, Supervisor of Elections Shirley Anderson and several local judges also attended.

Malloy stated, “It brings me great joy to be a part

of providing this festive event to our community. I hope the size of our crowd is an indicator for further participation in the many remaining activities for the holiday season and events to come. Our downtown business community is very excited about Brooksville Main Street’s progress towards the revitalization of our amazing Historic Downtown Brooksville.”

Barbara Manuel, Chair of the Promotion Committee for Brooksville Main Street thanked the many businesses that helped make the event possible.

The original sponsors three years ago that contributed to the construction of the tree were Withlacoochee River Electric, Lowman Law Firm, Hernando County Tourist Development Council, Attorney Frank Miller and Brooksville Chiropractic. This year fifteen private, public and non-profit entities funded the effort. The Matthew and Beverly Lowman Family Foundation gave the starter funds for the tree at City Hall.

Mrs. Manuel commented, “The vision of the Brooksville Main Street program is to make downtown Brooksville a Christmas destination for our community and surrounding communities.”

Throughout the holiday season there will be many more activities in the downtown area. These include a Christmas show at the Hernando Park Band Shell Pavilion and Snacks with Santa hosted

David’s father Sam Moniac was a guide for the U.S. military during the Creek War of 1813-14. His father’s service enhanced David’s application to West Point.

The United States was attempting to assimilate the Creeks during this time and a young leader with military experience was seen as advantageous.

The Fort Jackson Treaty which ended the Creek War had a provision that stipulated that the US would provide education for four young Creeks. In 1817, David Moniac was admitted to West Point which at the time was known as the U.S. Army college.

David Moniac grad-

uated from West Point in 1822 after being held back a year at his request. David resigned his commission after five months in the army in 1822 to manage his clan’s property in Alabama, where he developed a cotton plantation. At the time the size of the army was being reduced, so leaving the service was encouraged.

David Moniac married a Creek Indian named Mary Powell, who was a cousin of the Seminole leader Osceola. He rejoined the army during the Second Seminole War. He rose to the rank of Major after successfully leading troops in several battles.

David and his Creek volunteers joined the forces lead by Richard K. Call, creating a force of 2500 regular soldiers.

Their mission was to attack the Seminoles who had taken refuge in the Cove of the Withlacoochee and surrounding area.

Fourteen years after he graduated from West Point, David Moniac was killed at the Battle of Wahoo Swamp attempting to find a route for his men through the swamp. He was said to be exalting his troops and attempting to determine the depths of the river.

The Seminoles that killed him were led by Osceola his wife’s cousin.

In the 1990s, Major Moniac’s remains were reburied in Florida National Cemetery which is located near the city of Bushnell in Sumter County, Florida. His presence at the cemetery has since received national attention through the veterans legacy program.

Hanukkah celebrations last week included a menorah lighting at the Towne Square Mall in Spring Hill hosted by Chabad of Spring Hill. The ceremony was a lovely affair with local dignitaries, John Mitten, Jeff Holcomb and Kay Hatch in attendance and participating in the lighting ceremony. Rabbi Chaim explained the story of Hanukkah to the crowd in which about 2000 years ago Assyrian Greeks ruled over Israel and they outlawed the practice of Judaism. A group of Jews banded together- the Maccabees led by Judah and they fought for their religion.

They reclaimed Jerusalem and the temple. When it came time to light the menorah in the temple, there was only one jug of oil - which was projected to last for one day. Miraculously, it lasted for 8 days.

“One message for us is that many times we think we are small,” but Rabbi Chaim continued, “Small actions with God’s help have tremendous power.”

“It leads to being a menorah- a menorah is light.

When it is dark, the light shines forth and brings goodness to everyone,” he explained.

While Rabbi Chaim spoke, his wife Seema distributed candles to the crowd, lighting each one.

On Saturday Dec. 8, Temple Beth David held their Night of 100 Menorahs, where Rabbi Reb Tuviah gave a short service. The service was followed by a game of Hanukkah Family Feud and Hanukkah songs. He also spoke about the significance of the holiday and showed a short film on the recent lighting of a large menorah at the Brandenburg Gate in Germany- the backdrop to many Nazi marches. Before a meal was enjoyed, prayers were said and each family present lit their menorah - which was a lovely sight to behold.

Geraldine “Gerry” R. Gignac Marra McLaurin Geraldine “Gerry” R. Gignac Marra McLaurin, most recently of Lakewood, CO, passed away peacefully in her sleep on November 20, 2018. A prayer service and viewing was held at Horan & McConaty funeral home on Tues., Nov. 27, from 7-9 p.m., and a Mass of Christian Burial was held Wed., Nov. 28th, 2018, at 10:30 a.m. at St. Frances Cabrini RCC in Littleton, CO, Fr. Sean McGrath presiding.

Gerry was born in Chicago, on April 4, 1918, the second oldest of six children.

She married Frank Marra in 1942, and, while raising a family of six children, she lived in the Chicago area, Pleasant Hill, CA, and Wayne, NJ. A lifelong reader, gardener and square dancer, she also enjoyed knitting, crochet and embroidery. Her employment career included working as a Comptometer operator (a precursor to the calculator) and as an accountant for Union Camp Corporation in Wayne, NJ. After the death of her husband Frank in 1978, she retired and moved to Brooksville, FL, where she lived for 38 years, continuing her love for square dancing, volunteering at Brooksville Elementary School, teaching senior fitness classes and traveling the world. She remarried in 1980 to Thomas C. “Chic” McLaurin and was a life member of the DAV Ladies Auxiliary and the Elks #2582 Ladies Auxiliary.

After a stroke in 2005, Gerry moved to Colorado to be close to her daughter, Judith, and her son Joseph.

She spent 12 years there and enjoyed dinners, holidays and outings with her children and grandchildren.

She had celebrated her 100th birthday on April 8, 2018, in Denver with family and friends.

Gerry was a lifelong member of the Catholic church, a devotee of a healthy diet, regular exercise, and a glass of wine at dinner, and retained her smile and sense of humor throughout her life. She is predeceased by her first and second husbands and her five siblings: Clayton, Robert, Edward, Eileen and Rita. She is survived by daughters Geraldine Hardy of Underhill, VT, Judith Wyatt of Chatham, NY and Jan Marra of St. Louis; sons John Marra of Brooklyn, NY, Joseph Marra of Denver and James Marra of Tampa; ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Burial of her cremains will take place at Florida National Cemetery, Bushnell, FL, in 2019, date TBD. Memorials to a charity of the donor’s choice.

Searching for the one that is missing

Bringing due process back to university sexual assault accusations

The feminists have incessantly fought for more rights for the female accuser since the sexual revolution of the 1960s. They have won victory after victory that has increased the dominance of females on university campuses. Presently males have realized that higher education is such a hostile environment that they currently make up only 40% of the students while women have skyrocketed to 60% in undergraduate and graduate schools.

One of the major factors is Women’s Study programs that indoctrinate students with anti male and female supremacy rhetoric. These programs stress that all men are oppressors, are rapists and women always tell the truth. Certainly these ridiculous sentiments are absurd when rationally examined although they have been effective in weaponizing females against males in higher education.

The Brent Kavanaugh Supreme Court hearings, “Bed Girl” at Columbia U., The Duke Lacrosse team/Tawanda Brawley case and many other less publicized fiascos of current injustice have demonstrated that male students are considered guilty until they prove themselves innocent. It is impossible to prove your innocence in an emotional accusation since your adversaries will continue to say you “just got away with it.” This is similar to proving the emotional charge that you did not beat your wife.

These emotionally driven incidents blemish our justice system.

The insanity of an accused person being condemned and prosecuted without having the right to any defense is reminiscent of the Salem Witch Trials.

In that gross injustice, children were given the power in the same way female college students are given to be judge and jury to determine guilt of an accused. There was no recourse for the innocent to be heard.

President Obama’s Title Nine revisions were applauded by the feminists and were ignored or overlooked for those championing justice for all individuals. These guidelines empower females to be judge and jury at the expense of male’s rights.

This is supposed to protect the feelings and rights of females at the expense of college men due to the concern for the females’ emotional reluctance to report assaults on college campuses. They fear the stigma of being negatively judged by others, which has led to these oppressive regulations.

The accusation by the female was considered to be instantly true leaving the identified male guilty. The males in the sexual assault cases had no rights to discovering, cross-examination, no mediation even if the accuser wanted it.

The standard required for the supposed female victim to prove her case was only the “preponderance of evidence” not the “clear and convincing evidence” which is a higher level of burden of persuasion. In essence he was denied his right to due process.

Even if the female withdrew her accusations the Title Nine Coordinator, often a Women Studies graduate, continued her original request for the investigation.

The college was responsible to investigate instances that were not even reported directly to the school. These institutions

Personally, I’d rather have a portable, expandable, multileveled scaffold, say 8-by-16 feet when fully extended. I’d use it for everything, from putting up lights and drapes to cleaning out long stretches of gutters. Someone invent that. It needs to fold easily under a bed.

Focusing too much attention on the things of earth while ignoring God is a sure way to become discouraged.

Christians are spiritually connected to their creator and have undergone a miraculous transformation, but this does not mean they are always walking with Him or even aware of his presence. In the old life we were led by our feelings without any respect or concern with God, His Word, or His people. But when a person surrenders their life to God, the idea is for everything to change including laying down their independence and embracing a lifestyle of trusting and obeying God’s voice. This new identity includes following his decisions and letting go of the things of earth that desire to capture our thoughts and devotion. When any of us fail to have our priorities in the right place we automatically become detached from our joyful excitement and this explains why many are miserable.

No matter how wealthy or healthy we are, this temporal realm is hardly a continuous mountain top experience. Actually, our existence here on earth was never intended to be a perfect paradise because heaven is an eternal dwelling place reserved for God, his angels and his people. It may not be popular, but we will all have our share of valleys in this life as they are meant to teach us valuable lessons. By the way, the fear and darkness of the valley does not matter as long as we are holding tightly to his hand.

The good news is these sad and difficult places were only designed to be temporary situations. God wants us to learn how to be an overcomer by allowing him to open our eyes and ears so that we can know what he wants us to do.

Since we all have free-will, we have the choice to do whatever we set our mind to and even Christians can make terrible decisions if this is what they really want. Jesus has always realized how easy it is for humans to wander away from him as he tells the story in Matthew chapter 18 about the sheep that becomes separated from the flock. Christ represents the shepherd and says the good shepherd leaves the ninety-nine to go search for the one that is missing. How often do we consider that God loves us so much that he is constantly trying to rescue the ones who have lost their way? How easy it is for any of us to become untied from the harbor like a small sailing vessel that is pulled by the strong currents out into the open sea. This reminds me of the old hymn that warns, “You’re drifting too far from the shore.”

Many times when we are busy with shopping and entertaining we can fail to recognize why we feel a sense of emptiness and loneliness.

Even when we are surrounded by family and friends and everything seems fine on the outside, we can experience a loss of peace and contentment on the inside as if something deep-down in our soul is missing. This “something” is our personal relationship with God that we have neglected. As we approach one of the most hectic and stressful times of the year, let us take some quiet time to ourself and think about what is truly important. Jesus said in Matthew 11:28, “Come unto me all of you that labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”
