Hernando High held their 2018 Sports Hall of Fame Banquet and Induction on Thursday, October 4 in the Leopards gym and for one special 1973 graduate it was a long time coming.

I

t was an impulsive decision. I frequently get homesick and long to be back home in Europe, so I chose to fly across the pond to meet friends and relatives and explore a small part of Europe in a short six-day visit.

Airline ticketing can be complex but I opted for Delta Airlines via Atlanta to get to my destination of Dublin. As a frequent traveler, I invariably choose Delta Airlines to go to Europe; firstly, because they’ve always been reliable and partly in honor of my late husband who flew for Delta out of JFK. I booked a price of $848 return (but there are cheaper options) and selected a Delta Comfort seat. For just a few more dollars, Delta Comfort+ gives you space, and up to four more inches on long-haul flights.

You’re also allowed priority boarding, which means you can board directly after the first-class passengers and settle in sooner.

There’s also other benefits like a dedicated overhead bin, complimentary drinks, a headset, and a toiletry kit, plus all the HBO and Showtime movies. I can even stream entertainment on my personal device.

I indulged myself as soon as I reached the airport. I have Global Entry and TSA Pre-Check so breezed through security and then enjoyed some shopping and a pre-flight cocktail before boarding.

It’s a very short flight of about 7.5 hours from Atlanta to Dublin so I was perky on arrival. And, as a previous longtime inflight attendant, I had prepared myself in the days before my flight by altering my timeclock and eating habits.

Before traveling, I booked a car online at Europcar.com at a rate of $128 for 6 days with unlimited mileage, although I did have to pay extra for GPS navigation. My See IRELAND, Page 16

Both our children, son Jay II and daughter Dayna, graduated from the Hernando County school system. Additionally, both attended and graduated from Florida colleges. This firsthand experience gives me greater insight to the needs of our schools and a more amiable perspective when making decisions to provide the best educational opportunities available to our Hernando County students.

I had a very successful career with Delta Airlines, retiring after 32 years, in 2002. In 1990 I was elected to the Hernando County School Board. I fought hard for the students, teachers, non-instructional employees and parents, while battling an out of control budget. I was elected to the Hernando County Board of County Commission and served the public for 12 years as a county commissioner.

My community

involvement goes well beyond government. I am presently an active volunteer for NAMI Hernando (National Alliance on Mental Illness).

I hope this helps you to understand just how important this community is to me and the time and effort I have put in to helping Hernando County remain a great place to live. This goes to the core of my personality and comes from the bottom of my heart. Honesty and integrity is vital when interacting with fellow board members, students, parents and teachers. If you are not trustworthy you cannot lead. It is all part of leadership. As a 16 year public servant I have proven my honesty and integrity to the community.

Please describe the three top issues facing the school district.

School safety—harden schools and provide safety training for students and staff.

Increase workforce programs/vocational training—more programs are needed to meet industry demands and provide career opportunities.

New teacher recruitment and retainment—national teacher shortage.

Please describe up to three projects that are most important to the school district and why.

Focus on giving teachers more time in the classroom and less time with paperwork. We have to give our teachers time to plan rather than spending time on paperwork.

Increase mental health services for students.

Many children are never or go as long as ten years before being diagnosed with mental health problems. The sooner the diagnosis the better the outcome.

I was instrumental in helping save NAMI, “National Alliance on Mental Illness” from closing their doors and am proud to say that today, NAMI Hernando is one of the purest success stories in the whole state of Florida.

Increase emphasis on music and cultural education. Research shows musical training helps develop language and reasoning skills and improves academic performance.

Upon hearing the shots, witnesses inside the establishment fled to a nearby business to call authorities.

One individual, Michael Midolo, upon learning of the shooting, entered the business where he confronted Vazquez.

When Midolo asked Vazquez what had occurred, Vazquez pointed a gun at Midolo and told him it didn't concern him.

Midolo exited the business to call 911, and then waited outside for law enforcement to arrive.

When deputies arrived, Vazquez surrendered to law enforcement without incident.

Following questioning, Vazquez was transported to the Hernando County Detention Center where was held on charges of Homicide and Aggravated Assault with a Deadly Weapon.

Vazquez bond was set at $70,000.

Because the charge was upgraded to first degree murder and Vasquez was indicted by a grand jury on this charge, he is being held without bond at the Hernando County Detention Center until the completion of his trial.

Jimmy has been heavily involved with the School District for several years. As Chairman of the Steering Committee, he most recently spearheaded the campaign to revive the half cent, which will generate $120 million over ten years for school capital improvements. The initiative passed by a 60.5% majority. During the campaign, Jimmy visited all Hernando county schools and met with teachers, students and school employees who shared the needs of the District with him. He saw the needs are great and decided to run for School Board.

Jimmy Lodato was born and raised in Tampa, Florida, where he graduated from Jefferson High School and attended the University of Tampa.

After a successful career as Vice President with a national company, Jimmy founded three businesses specializing in statewide sales, service, marketing and advertising of non-food products in the food and drug trade. He and his wife, Tammy, have

been married over 37 years and moved to Hernando County in 1999 from Tierra Verde.

Jimmy currently serves as a member of the board for the Hernando County Education Foundation, is a sponsor and volunteer for Kiwanis Back to School programs, involved with Communities in Schools and a member of Sons of Italy in Hernando County.

He was awarded the Outstanding Community Engagement Award from Hernando County Education Foundation as well as Award from Hernando County School District for Faithful Dedication and Tireless Commitment as Co-Chair of Save Our Schools Campaign to Restore the Half Cent.

(Example: team player, data driven, experience in the district etc) It is important that a board member has the knowledge and the understanding to examine all facets of the district and to bring the teachers, students and parents together in order for the district to thrive.

For the last six years, as a private citizen I worked with this board and as chairman to restore funding to repair our schools.

Our objective was to bring the school district, the county and this community together and this was achieved. The unification from the initiative has brought all these factors into position at this time and I feel that with the proper team the success of this district will continue to improve.

Please describe the three top issues facing the school district.

1. Funding for the state mandate to harden the schools and continue the presence of school resource officers 2. Continue to balance our budget 3. Expansion of student programs, such as mental health issues, special needs and vocational training.

Please describe up to three projects that are most important to the school district and why?

1. Expand vocational training. Last year 1,500 students graduated and over 500 will not attend college. Vocational training will provide these students with the skills to get a job right out of high school that will lead to a successful career path.

2. Reduce busing for elementary schools to one mile (from two miles) and add sidewalks to all schools. Our young children are at risk every day walking to school alone, in inclement weather, and in the street.

3. Increase teacher pay and benefits. Teachers, in my opinion, are under appreciated. Everyone who has attended school always remembers the teachers who had the greatest influence on their lives. I want teachers to have the respect and appreciation they deserve.

Dedicated happy teachers create happy students, which leads to a positive learning environment.

Happy students make happy parents, which will lead to a strong bond within our community.

Mother of infant Keyton O'Callaghan arrested

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office reports that the State Attorney’s Office investigation into the death of 9 month of Keyton O’Callaghan, has resulted in the arrest of her mother Cami Lee Moyer, 38.

On Aug. 17, 2018, the father of nine-month-old Keyton O'Callaghan discovered his infant daughter unresponsive in the hot car in his driveway. Keyton had been under the care of her mother - Cami Lee Moyer, 38. Keyton did not survive despite efforts to revive her by her father and then first responders.

First responders arrived on the scene shortly after the dispatch call that came in at 11:16 am. At 12:06 pm Keyton was pronounced deceased by a physician at Oak Hill Hospital.

The case was investigated by the State Attorney’s Office, resulting in the arrest of Keyton’s mother Cami Lee Moyer under Charges of Murder in the Third Degree, Neglect of a Child Causing Great Bodily Harm and Child Neglect.

Moyer is currently being held at the Hernando County Detention Center on a no bond status.

The investigation into the death of O'Callaghan is ongoing. There are no additional details available at this time.

SLATTERY, JOSEPH YOB: 1985 CHARGES: GRAND THEFT-AUTO, POSS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSES OF WEAPON

BY FELON Arrested at: 10/05/2018 10:45 442 TRYON CIR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 10/05/2018, the defendant took keys, without permission, from the victim at his residence of 577 Waterfall Drive, Spring Hill, FL 34606. The defendant then used the keys to gain access to and subsequently take the victim's 2014 black Toyota car (FL tag JDIZ97) against the victim's will.

The victim advised the defendant had spent the night at the residence, and no one else had access to the keys or the vehicle.

The victim advised he never gave consent for anyone to take his vehicle as he is an Uber driver, and needs his vehicle to make a living.

The victim signed an affidavit of stolen vehicle.

The vehicle was located in the driveway of 442 Tryon Circle, Spring Hill, FL 34606. The defendant exited the residence and was detained. Post Miranda warning, the defendant advised he thought he got consent to take the vehicle.

A search incident to arrest revealed a pair of metallic knuckles located in the defendant's front right shorts pocket and a clear plastic baggie with crystal like substance inside the defendant's front left shorts pocket.

The crystal like substance field tested positive for Methamphetamine using NarcoTest Kit 7623.

The crystal like substance weighed 1.0 gram and was weighed using certified OHAUS scale (serial number 47871).

A criminal history check revealed the defendant to be convicted of one or more felonies on 10/24/2016. (Court case number 272016CF001382CFAXMX).

The defendant was issued citation AA00UFE for the theft of the motor vehicle.

Based on the above information the defendant was transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident, where he was given a court date of 10/30/2018, at 0900 hours. The defendant was held on a $14,000.00 total bond in accordance with the bond schedule.

HCSO ARREST SUMMARIES

HIGATE RD, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34609 Arrest Summary: On 10/05/2018, I responded to the residence of 5123 Higate Road in reference to a battery.

Upon arrival contact was made with the defendant and the victim.

I observed the victim to have the straps of her shirt ripped from the back of the shirt. The defendant then began to argue with the victim in my presence. The defendant was then detained and placed in the back of my marked patrol vehicle.

The victim stated that she and her, live in boyfriend of the past five years, have been arguing since the night before. The victim stated she went outside and sat in a chair. The defendant then grabbed the victim's arm and stated that he wants to beat her. The defendant then "threw" the victim to the ground and dragged her by her shirt, which caused it to rip. The victim stated that she did not wish to be grabbed by the defendant and was attempting to stay away from him.

I used my agency issued Miranda Warning card and read the defendant his rights.

Post Miranda, the defendant stated that they argued outside near the chair. The defendant stated he grabbed the phone and the victim pulled backwards, which caused them to fall on top of each other.

The defendant stated he stayed on the ground next to the victim while she was crying. The defendant had no further information.

The defendant and victim reside in the household as a single family unit and have a child in common.

Based on the aforementioned information, it was determined that probable cause did exist for COUNT I: Battery (Domestic), no bond.

While the defendant was in the back of my patrol vehicle, he began to hit his head on the window. I observed the door to be bending away from the vehicle until I was able to see sunlight through the crack in the door. I went to the door where the defendant was hitting and opened it with my agency issued pepper spray in my hand.

I instructed the defendant to not hit his head against the window.

The defendant then lunged out of the vehicle and struck me in the chest with his head. Due to the force of the hit, I had to take a step backwards. The defendant was then standing outside of my vehicle and took approximately 2 running steps away from my vehicle. I then grabbed his arm and used my pepper spray on the defendant's face.

A physical ensued and ended in the dirt. The defendant then stated, "I was just trying to run away."

Based on the aforementioned information, it was determined that probable cause did exist for COUNT II: Battery on a Law Enforcement Officer, Bond $5,000; COUNT III: Escape from a Law Enforcement Officer, bond $10,000; COUNT IV: Resisting a Law Enforcement Officer without Violence, bond $1,000.

CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE Arrested at: 10/05/2018 21:05 2468 COMMERCIAL WAY, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 10/5/18, this affiant responded to the address of 2468 Commercial Way (the Rural King parking lot), in reference to a suspicious incident.

Upon my arrival, contact was made with Barbara Ann Ek, the defendant, in her white, 2013, Chevrolet Impala. This affiant then observed the defendant gazing into her steering wheel for a long period of time (the defendant was unaware of this affiant's presence).

This affiant then made contact with the defendant to check her well-being. This affiant observed the defendant's eyes to be dilated, glassy, and slightly bloodshot.

Upon checking the defendant's well-being, this affiant was then able to hear the defendant slurring her words, but was not able to detect any odors of alcohol emitting from the defendant's person.

When asking if the defendant was under the influence of any prescription medications. The defendant replied, "No. I don't take anything."

Shortly after, the defendant consented to a search of her purse and vehicle. The searched yielded one orange, round pill, with the numbers "1" and "2" imprinted on it (later to be identified as Clonazepam, classified as a schedule 4 controlled substance). The said pill was also discovered to be loose at the bottom of the defendant's purse.

The defendant informed this affiant that she "only took meds at night," and then stated, "I take meds twice a day."

When asking the defendant if she had a prescription, the defendant stated, "The bottle was in the purse." This affiant then conducted another search of the affiant's vehicle and purse for a "bottle." The search yielded negative results.

The defendant then stated that she "wasn't sure" where her prescription or "bottle" was located.

Post Miranda, the defendant invoked her rights and refused to make any other statements until speaking with an attorney.

The defendant was then placed under arrest for the above offense and transported to the Hernando County Detention Center without incident. The defendant was issued a court date for 10/30/18 in Room D, of the Hernando County Courthouse at 0900 hours. The defendant was also issued a $5,000 bond per the bond schedule.

Upon my arrival, contact was made with a white female(the defendant) who was later identified as Chasity Horner which was confirmed via her name, date of birth, and social security number.

I observed the defendant to be flailing around in the front yard, screaming about spiders scrawling around on her skin. Due to this, the defendant was immediately detained.

Contact was then made with the complainant, Jeff Statkus. Jeff advised while cutting the grass around the residence at 19544 Manecke Road, a the defendant walked onto the property, screaming uncontrollably about spiders crawling on her. Jeff advised that the defendant continued to the aforementioned residence, where she picked up a dumbbell weight that she then threw through the window of the residence where she attempted to gain entry inside.

Jeff advised that the female then opened the front door and ran inside, at which time she was forced out by the resident, Kayleb Ingoldsby.

I then made contact with Kayleb who advised that he was in his back yard when he heard Jeff yell that someone was trying to get into his house. Kayleb advised upon returning inside and walking to the front door, he heard a loud bang and the sound of glass breaking which was discovered to be the window in children's bedroom.

Kayleb advised he then observed the defendant open his unlocked front door and walk into his residence, at which time he grabbed her and forced her back outside.

I observed the in question window to be located on the north side of the residence, located on the front porch area which was completed covered by the residences roof.

I observed the window to be shattered with a large hole on the upper portion of the window.

Kayleb advised it would cost approximately $500.00 to replace and install the new window. Kayleb further stated the he had never met the defendant prior to this incident, and she was never given permission to enter or damage his residence in any kind of way.

Due to the defendant continuing to scream about spiders crawling on her, she was then transported to Bayfront Health Brooksville to be medically cleared. While at the hospital post Miranda, the defendant was unable to answer any question, however she did spontaneously state, "I only broke in the house because I was tripping".

After being medically cleared, the defendant was charged with Burglary of Dwelling in which she was issued a bond of $15,000.

On arrival I made contact with the defendant's son who stated that his mother, Jaimie Samburgh, was out of control and hit her boyfriend.

Defendant's son stated that Jaimie chased the victim with a piece of wood and then picked up a broom and ran after the victim and struck him in the face with the handle. the victim provided a sworn written statement that was placed into records.

I then made contact with the victim who stated that his live-in girlfriend of 6 years, Jaimie Samburgh, grabbed a piece of wood and stated that she would hit him with it. The victim stated that she then picked up a broom with PVC handle and struck him in the head with it. The victim did not have any visible injures. He provided a sworn written statement that was placed in to records.

The victim stated he was struck in the face against his will.

I then made contact with Jaime who admitted that she had been drinking today. Jaimie stated she got into an argument with the victim who has been her live-in boyfriend for the past 7 years. Jaimie sated that the victim was walking out of a travel trailer in the back yard and as he went out the door a piece of wood was knocked over and accidentally hit her in the leg.

Jaimie stated she then grabbed the piece of wood and asked the victim how it would feel if she hit him with the wood. Jaimie stated she drooped the wood and picked up the broom and was running past the victim and she "may have hit him in the face with the handle."

Jaime showed me the broom with the lightweight PVC handle that was sitting outside Based on all the statements I determined that Jaime was the primary aggressor and placed her under arrest for domestic battery.

I told Jaime to place her hands behind her back and she initial refused and I grabbed her right arm and placed her hands behind her back. Jaimie initial refused to walk to the car and was escorted to the car. Jaime was crying and yelling and we asked for the assistance of Detention Deputies once we got to the Jail.

Jaime was held on a no bond status an issued a misdemeanor court date of 11-07-2018 at 0900 hours in Courtroom C.

The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office reports that Jeffrey Michael Morrison was officially charged in the homicide of Mitzi Marie Babb, the Florida Forest Service Park Ranger who went missing June 19, 2018.

Babb was a full time resident Park Ranger at the Croom Motorcycle Area within the Withlacoochee State Forest.

Morrison was identified as the person of interest in her disappearance and taken into custody on June 22 at the White Springs Agricultural Weigh Station in Hamilton County, FL. Authorities discovered Babb’s body in a water-

way in Camden County Georgia also on June 22.

A well attended local memorial service was held for Mizi Babb at the Withlacoochee State Forest Croom Motorcycle Area on July 21.

On October 5, 2018 Morrison was charged with Murder and Concealing the Death of Another, both felonies.

He is being held without bond at the Camden County Public Safety Complex in Camden County, Georgia.

The Hernando County Sheriff's Office would like to thank the Peach County Sheriff's Office and Camden County Sheriff's Office in Georgia for their assistance in the investigation.

PLANNING AND ZONING DIRECTOR RONALD PIANTA • Hernando County 2040 Comprehensive Plan Adoption Public Hearing Assistant County Administrator Ron Pianta presented the second and final public hearing on the 2040 Comprehensive Plan amendments. Pianta reported that an “Ommisions, Recommendations and Comments” or “ORC” report was received from the prior transmission on May 21, 2018. The proposed amendment addresses all items on the ORC report.

Major additions to the comprehensive plan include Spring Center (CPAM-1703) and CPAM-1801, a smaller scale project by Alliant Partners Realty, LLC. Over the past few years, the comprehensive plan’s language has been changed to eliminate directive language such as “must” and “shall”, in order to simplify the document. The board voted unanimously to approve via rollcall vote.

• Petition Submitted by Judkins Construction, Inc., to Vacate Portion of Right of Way of Hviezdoslav Street and Washington Avenue was denied.

Per the agenda item description: “The petitioner indicates the vacation is being sought in order to avoid costly commercial design standard facade requirements. The Department of Public Works denied the vacation requests as the roads currently provide right of way for adjacent parcels and also to serve as frontage road for access management.”

• Petition Submitted by Michael and Katherine Borremans to Vacate Portions of Drainage and Utility Easement Located in Tooke Lake Estates was approved.

Per the agenda item description: “The vacation of the portions of easements is sought in order to construct a single-family home in the center of the two lots. All affected utilities and County departments have indicated no objection to the request.”

• Ordinance Amending Brooksville-Tampa Bay Regional Airport Advisory Committee Regarding Appointment of Members - approved via roll call vote 3-2, with Dukes and Champion voting no.

Per the agenda’s ordinance description: “Pursuant to the Board's direction, the proposed ordinance (1) expands the Committee's membership from five to seven, (2) provides each County Commissioner may appoint one member, (3) provides the County Administrator may appoint the remaining two members, and (4) amends the Committee's procedures so that they mirror those of the Planning and Zoning Commission.

This is in the vicinity of Salt Creek and Shoal Line Blvd.

Approved 5-0 Award of Contract No. 18-C00140/BH to Air Mechanical & Service Corp., for Partial Roof Replacement and Air Conditioning Equipment Replacement at Lykes Library (Cost: $188,390.00) Representative Craig stated that this a partial replacement since there are three different roofs for the structure. This roof was last replaced in 1994- the others have been replaced more recently. The A/C was last replaced in 1986 and sits on this particular roof.

Extension of Professional Services Agreement (Contract No. 13-Q00061) With Southern Strategy Group of Tampa Bay, LLC, and Sunrise Consulting Group for Lobbying and Consulting Services. Per the Agenda Item Description, the system is outdated and “beyond its system life expectancy.” The Two-Way radio system is used by first responders as well as county and city departments. About a year ago the county approved the consultant to conduct a needs assessment and conceptual design for the Emergency Radio System. The consultant Carr, Riggs, & Ingram presented the needs assessment at the Sept. 25 BOCC meeting and expenditure of $72,262 for the procurement/RFP process was approved unanimously.

Flight delayed after woman brings squirrel on plane ORLANDO, Fla. (AP) — Police had to remove a woman who brought an "emotional support squirrel" on a Frontier Airlines flight headed from Orlando, Florida, to Cleveland.

Frontier says the passenger had noted in her reservation that she was bringing an emotional support animal with her on Flight 1612 Tuesday night. But she did not indicate it was a squirrel.

The airline says rodents, including squirrels, are not allowed. The airline says police were called when the passenger refused to leave the plane.

Police requested the other passengers disembark while officers dealt with the woman, who was eventually escorted into the main terminals.

The flight left for Cleveland about two hours later.

Dr. Creekmore’s roll top desk sits in Dr. Stringer’s office within the 14 room home. Dr. Creekmore began his practice in Brooksville in 1917- while his early predecessor Dr. Stringer was the local doctor in the late 1800’s.

Dr. Creekmore’s desk is on loan from Betty Cason Snow. Betty’s mother Vera Smith, worked for Dr. Creekmore for many years. Before her marriage in 1957, Betty recalls resting her arm on the surface that pulls out of the desk for a blood test.

Betty remarked that she has no room in her house, that’s why she has it on loan to the May- Stringer House.

Betty’s husband, Bobby Snow, donated a Coats and Clark spool chest from the early 1900’s.

There are approximately 11,000 artifacts and heirlooms from local families that have been entrusted to the museum for safekeeping. There are so many, that not all of them can be on display at once and some must be stored in BELOW: Dr. Creekmoore's rolltop desk, on loan from Betty the home’s attic- said to have the most paranormal Cason Snow, in Dr. Stringer's Office activity.

The items in the home are well cared for and lovingly displayed by the all volunteer staff. Curator Morgan Wick develops themed displays that alternate throughout the year.

“Not only are we running into problems underneath the house with the foundation, we’ve found termite damage- we have joists that are not matched up, just a lot of surprises. We knew there would be issues, but not to this extent,” said Wick.

A timeline was shown regarding the termination of the MES teachers.

According to Rattray, the decision was made in a cabinet meeting on March 5, 2018, and the notice to board members took place between April 12-13, 2018. Notice was given to the Teacher's Union 15 minutes prior to the announcement on April 13.

Notice to parents was given on April 16, 2018, the same day standardized testing of the students began.

Regarding the decision to terminate the Moton teachers, Rattray said, "I'm not going to argue whether or not what administration ultimately decided to do at Moton was the right decision. What I will vigorously argue... is that there were serious problems with the execution of the decision."

Rattray continued on to mention public comments at school board meetings, again citing "disappointment… lack of trust in the administration... there was true despair."

The Teacher's Union, having no idea what was being considered prior to their 15-minute notice, nonetheless decided, filed a grievance and ceaseand-desist letters with the school district. The District ultimately reached a settlement with the Union on May 8, 2018, allowing some teachers to return to Moton and some to be allowed to choose a school in which to transfer.

According to Rattray, Board Chair Mark Johnson, as well as members Susan Duval and Linda Prescott all cited communication from Romano as a necessary area of improvement in 2017.

Dr. Romano’s attorney, Kathryn McHale opened her arguments by saying, “While the circumstances… are not what demonstrates the best of the Hernando County School District, I think we can all agree on a couple of things. Since 2013, the… district has made significant improvements. Those improvements are due to the team effort; you as the elected school board members for your terms, your selection of Dr. Romano as the Superintendent … your administrators, teachers… parents… and the children of the Hernando County School District.”

McHale went on to say, “In 2013-14, the Florida Department of Education’s Accountability system rated you as a struggling ‘C’ school district. In 2015, you were a ‘B’ and have maintained that rating since. As of 2018, you are just shy of an ‘A’ rating.”

McHale approximated the step up to an ‘A’ rating as 4 percentage points.

McHale read a quote from a text regarding Romano: “In my 15-year school administrator tenure, I have witnessed no better.

Her ability to listen, lead, organize and collaborate have positively permeated throughout our district.

Dr. Romano implemented the concept of organizing to lead in our district, which is a collaborative problem-solving model, including all levels of the organization. 'Taste of the Fields' set for early November

On Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, the Kiwanis Club of the Brooksville Ridge will hold its annual Taste of the Fields. The event will take place from 3-7 pm at NJoy Spirits Distillery, a beautiful and unique Hernando County destination.

NJoy Spirits Distillery is situated on 80 acres, located deep within the Chassahowitzka Wildlife Management Area.

Spring Hill Christian Academy (SHCA) Tuesday night October 2, 2018 held their third annual Pink Out Night filled with volleyball games against Grace Christian School. Students wanted to bring awareness to not only breast cancer but all cancers. Pink Out Night instills students with a sense of generosity and philanthropy. SHCA Athletic Director and Coach Elsie Morales said they look within the school, then the church and if they are blessed they would find a family within the community that needs help.

“It feels amazing, I can’t wait to come out here every year,” said Travis Fletcher, a 2012 graduate who participated on the court. “Just to be around some of the guys I played with but most importantly the guys who inspired me today after the game of basketball, were Coach Jones and Coach Bowman. I am very appreciative of what they taught me on and off the court.”

Devon Curry (28) attended PHSC in 20062007, then transferred to Western Texas. Later in his career he played three years with the Harlem Globetrotters and since 2012 he has been traveling with the Harlem Wizards.

It was an assistant coach from 2006 that saw Curry play on his home court in Staten Island New York, that offered him a scholarship to PHSC. “I wish I could have brought in a championship here... a lot of memories and guys I still talk to are here today,” Curry said. “I remember those 5 o’clock in the morning practices and what is crazy though, is that those were the most intense practices I remember.”

Basketball officially starts for the Bobcats on November 1 as they travel to Hillsborough College.

There are three more scrimmages games: October 13, October 20, Nov. 3. The final scrimmage, they will face St. Leo. The scrimmages will give the Bobcats some court time to polish their defense and work towards achieving a 2019 championship.

Nature Coast picking up important district wins down the stretch

Speak the Language Each fall the days begin to really grow shorter, it gets dark much earlier and the sunrise come a bit later.

It’s this photoperiod, which triggers whitetail bucks to enter the rut and if the fresh scrapes I’m finding while scouting the local WMA’s is any indicator, our first rut period is now! From now up until our peak rut in mid-January, bucks will be most receptive to deer calls.

They’re going to be on their hooves looking for does and challenging other bucks to territorial disputes and in their testosterone-fueled state, they’re often quick to respond to challenge calls or a lonely doe call, which can give you a definite advantage.

I find it funny how many people think that deer are just these mute little critters running around out in the woods.

The fact is, they have a fairly wide range of vocalizations. And a good caller should be able to reproduce at least five of those; fawn bleats, doe bleats, doe estrous bleats, challenging buck grunts and tending buck grunts.

Fawn bleats have a few uses in a hunting situation as a high pitched fawn bleat will certainly attract does because it’s their maternal instinct to do so. Even if the doe hasn’t had a fawn that year, she is likely to come and check on the fawn particularly if it sounds as if it’s in distress. More often than not in the weeks around the rut, if you see a doe being followed by a hot buck, you should try to bring in the doe by bleating urgently in a high pitched blast on the bleat call, repeated three or four times.

If you can get that doe to run over to investigate your calling, you can also bring the buck in.

The doe’s bleat is unmistakable when you hear it in the woods.

It can be described as a kind of whiny noise, lasting a few seconds.

Does use their bleat to communicate with other deer, a common social call to find a companion or just to keep tabs on each other as they move in a herd.

But the tone and urgency changes slightly when they are in estrous. This estrous call is meant to signal a buck that she is ready to breed and when they make this noise, any buck within earshot is inclined to be interested.

The 230-pound tailback rushed for 239 yards on 32 carries and added four scores in leading Nature Coast to a 38-24 victory over the Hornets on the road. “(Michael Weston) is one of those running

backs that defenders in the second half just get tired of tackling,” Nature Coast coach Cory Johns said.

“He just wears on you as the game progresses. By the fourth quarter, many team’s defenses just don’t want to tackle him.”

With the win, the Sharks (5-1, 3-0) continue to control their playoff fate in Class 5A, as they remain undefeated in 5A-7. Nature Coast still has crucial matchups against rival Hernando and Citrus, but looks to be the class of the district. For Weeki Wachee, it was a valiant

effort but the loss for all intents and purposes knocks the Hornets out of the postseason picture.

The rivalry between the two schools appears to be heating up, as coaches from both teams exchanged words after the game. The only thing Johns was truly worried about was making sure his team remains focused as they head into the final four games of the season.

“I don’t think (Weeki Wachee) stopped us one time all night,” Johns said. “We didn’t score a couple times and one of

them was my fault. (Mike Weston) threw an interception there by the goal line, but I think we only punted once all night.”

One glitch to the schedule, however, is the postponement of Nature Coast’s district contest against Lecanto because of the threat of Hurricane Michael. As the storm closes in towards Florida’s panhandle, the threat of tropical storm force winds, rain added with storm surge along the Gulf Coast of the peninsula forced Citrus County schools to cancel activities on Friday.

Nonetheless, the Sharks will have a tough track ahead of them as they’ll have to play two games in one week at some point this season. Nature Coast last season finished as the district runner-up to

Hernando and ended up playing Baker County in the postseason. Johns pointed out it makes all the difference in the world not having to travel in the first round.

“It means everything to us to win the district,” Johns added. “Last year we lose the district to Hernando and finish as the runner-up and end up having to travel four hours to Jacksonville and play Baker County. It’s a big deal for us to play at home to start the postseason.”

Hernando Beach Cardboard Boat Race is sure to make a splash.

By Hanna Fox and Julie Maglio Bill Jay, organizer of the Hernando Beach Cardboard boat race took some time to speak with us early Tuesday morning even though he was in the middle of preparing for the coastal storm impacts of Hurricane Michael at the Hernando Beach Marina.

The cardboard boat race will take place on Saturday October 13 at the Hernando Beach Marina and will feature a kayak race this year. There will also be food, a silent auction, a number of vendors and of course the cardboat race!

All the proceeds go to Hernando Beach Marine Safety Support Group which is part of the Auxiliary Coast Guard who helps to make sure everybody is safe on the water. There will also be festivities going on next door at the Yacht Club.

Jay projects that there will be over 25 competitors. The contenders will be grouped by age to race around a short track.

Awards will be given for the best design and fastest boat. The cardboard boat race will be followed by a demolition derby. Another award will be for the boat that does the best job surviving the demolition derby and one for the most dramatic sinking (called the Titanic Award).

Be sure to get there early so you can take a look at all the spectacular boats before they go out on the water. Races start at 11:30am. Every year there are many extraordinary entries that you’d never believe were made out of cardboard.

There is bleacher seating for spectators. Now make sure you don’t miss the 6th Annual Hernando Beach Marina Cardboard Boat and Kayak Race.

Members of the Weeki Wachee Swamp Fest T-Shirt Contest Committee, led by Audrey Holley, gathered at the Weeki Wachee Area Club on Shoal Line Boulevard Sept.

29, 2018 to select the winners and runners-up of the annual Swamp Festival mascot contest.

For the 2019 Swamp Fest logo, entries were required to be in black and white, 8.5 x 11 inches in size and to feature a swamp monster and critters in a swamp scene.

The design also had to be original and not computer generated.

A total of 137 entries were submitted from as far away as St. Petersburg. Student entries included 32 from Springstead High School, 24 from Challenger K 8 School and 67 from West Hernando Middle School.

Top winner in overall design was LaVerne Taylor of Clearwater; Second Place went to Michele DeVane of Palm Grove and Third Place was won by Lou Norris of Weeki Wachee. Prizes of $100, $75 and $50 were awarded to the top 3 designs overall.

Gift certificates of $25, $15 and $10 went to the top 3 children’s designs submitted from local area schools. The winning students attend Springstead High School, West Hernando Middle School and Challenger K8 School.

12 Hard-Boiled large eggs 1 Teaspoon ground mustard 6 Tablespoon mayonnaise Salt & Pepper to taste Small Jar Black Olives

Directions

Boil eggs for est 15 minutes, once cooked cut eggs in half lengthwise.

Remove yoke place in

Dr. Tarasenko completed her residency at Largo Medical Center. She received her medical degree from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine in Bradenton. She received her undergraduate degree from Rutgers University in New Brunswick, New Jersey, where she majored in biology with a minor in psychology.

Oak Hill Hospital invites the public to its “Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser” to benefit the American Heart Association Heart Walk Team Oak Hill Hospital. Each year Oak Hill Hospital mounts a substantial team to raise money for the AHA. The Applebee’s Flapjack Fundraiser will be held on Saturday, October 13, 2018, from 8 am to 10 am at the Applebee’s at 20090 Cortez Boulevard, Brooksville, Florida 34603.

Tickets are only $5 per person and each ticket includes three pancakes, two sausages, coffee or tea, juice or soda.

The group is focused on creating a circle of support for those newly diagnosed and living with cancer, empowering each other through education, sharing and listening to each other’s stories, and fostering hope and strength during this journey.

I chose to hire a car because it would give me so much freedom to go to the places I wanted to visit, but public transport and trains make anywhere in Ireland very accessible.

My car, a BMW Series 3, was ready and waiting and I set off to Dublin City Centre on the first leg of my trip.

It was still early morning so I checked into the Fitzwilliam Hotel straight away. I was lucky and my room was available immediately. All freshened up, I later set off to explore Dublin. I boarded the”hopon, hop-off” bus so I could absorb the city.

My first stop was the Guinness Storehouse. I confess I like Guinness so took full advantage of the lots of complimentary beverages on hand on the rooftop bar that has a wonderful 360-degree view of the city. Other stops included the Jameson Whisky Distillery, the Museum of Modern Art and Trinity College.

I returned to the hotel and went to it’s Inn on the Green restaurant to unwind and have afternoon tea. Savory or sweet, it was difficult to choose

After a wee rest upstairs in the hotel, I met up for reunion drinkies with my old university friends in the very special ambiance of The Brazen Head pub.

Dating back to 1198, The Brazen Head is Ireland’s oldest pub. If you want to experience a true Irish pub experience then this is the one to make a note of. There’s a lot of history within this pub’s walls and although it’s a veritable rabbit’s warren of rooms, I chose to meet up with old university pals outside in the courtyard — if it’s not raining of course!

Waterford to the Wild Atlantic Way Rising early the next morning, I departed for Waterford and the House of Waterford Crystal. It was only a couple of hours

drive south from Dublin and well worth it.

Waterford is Ireland’s oldest city, founded in 914AD by the Vikings.

It has long stretches of beautiful beaches, just as beautiful as those in Florida though a lot chillier.

My visit though was all about the House of Waterford Crystal. Founded in 1783, it is a crystal lover’s dream. Tours cost from about $25 and private tours are available.

From Waterford County and in awe of the glittering displays of Waterford Crystal, I took a leisurely drive westwards across Ireland to Loop Head — a slender finger of land pointing out to sea from the most westerly point of County Clare, on the Atlantic coast.

I climbed to the top of the lighthouse and took in splendid views that stretch from County Kerry to the Cliffs of Moher. This area is a wildlife haven too, with thousands of seabirds

making their nests on the rock ledges and an estimated 160 bottlenose dolphins living in the mouth of the Shannon River.

Doolin, a local village, is known as the gateway to the towering Cliffs of Moher and Doolin Cave, with its huge free-hanging stalactite. Farther north and east, there’s an area called Burren — a stark area of limestone beds, where several species of orchids grow. But it’s the Cliffs of Moher that take your breath away. These are spectacular sea cliffs that run for about 20 miles and as high as 120 metres above the sea. Special is O’Brien’s Tower - the highest point of the Cliffs of Moher, and a hugely popular tourist destination.

Before tackling the view of the cliffs, I stayed at the charming Stella Maris Hotel in Kilkee, a village just a short distance away.

“The really scary part to me- we still have a fourth of the house to do. It’s just devastating- it really is,” she said gazing at the exposed wall.

Wick seems to take everything in stride. When there is a fix-it job she can handle, she says she’ll get it done. There was some water damage in the special exhibit room upstairs and Wick recalled, “I was in here ripping off paneling. Learning how to replace the boards.”

The collections in the special exhibit room are rotated quarterly.

“There are so many different groups in the community and we always find something that can appeal to everyone.”

We stopped in the Stringer Master Bedroom, where textiles are displayed. Wick says she is grateful to Janet Daniel, a textile expert who has been involved with the museum since the early 1980’s. Her husband Ron Daniel is a former President of the Board.

“In many cases, when we receive clothing artifacts- we get them and they are almost black.

Janet is able to bring them all back to life. It’s just amazing to me the detail on clothes of that time period and the intricate work that the women did.”

“Most of the items you see throughout the house are original- there are only a handful of reproductions - which are noted,” Wick added.

She commented, “Our hope once the stabilization is done and we can get all of the plaster work repaired, we’ll just be going room by room to restore each one.”

A Brief History of the May-Stringer House The home’s historical significance is explained in detail on the home’s application to the National Registry of Historic Places. John L. May died in 1858, just three years after the home was completed- leaving behind his wife Marena and his two daughters who continued to live in the house. Prior to his death, May donated 15 acres of land for the county’s courthouse construction.

Following May’s death, Marena married Frank Saxon in 1866. They had a son in 1867, but he lived only one month.

In 1869, their daughter Jesse May was born, but Marena died while giving birth to her. Jesse May only lived until 1872.

Frank Saxon, who was a Hernando County representative in the Florida Legislature remarried Tululu Hope. The couple relocated to a home Saxon built south of the May House, which is now called Saxon Manor.

The May House changed hands a number of times between the Saxons and the Stringers but many of the transaction records are lost due to the courthouse fire in 1877. Jackson explained that the first record after the fire is in 1883 when J.H. Reddic sold it to Jennie Johnson for $600.

Then Dr. Stringer Sr. purchased it and built the addition in 1903. The southwest room on the first floor was used as his doctor’s office.

Dr. Sheldon Stringer, Sr. Dr. Stringer passed away in 1903, so sadly he didn’t get to utilize the home and office for very long.

The home remained in the Stringer family for many years. Jackson’s history says that the last Stringer to live in the house was Betty Stringer Faircloth, a great grandchild of Dr. Sheldon Stringer Sr. Betty sold the house to Dr. Early Hensley and his wife in 1980 who then leased it to the Hernando Historical Museum Association with an option to buy.

The Museum Association purchased it in 1981.

Community service transforming into student activism The US public education function has changed radically. Initially it was the Three Rs: to read, write and learn arithmetic. The teacher’s main purpose was to assist the students in developing academic skills, learning basic history and developing good character. This presented them with tools necessary to be future learners and critical thinkers.

During LBJ's presidency “The Great Society” viewed schools as a means to equalize educational opportunities for disadvantaged students. The Elementary and Secondary Education Act passed under LBJ's presidency federalized education through federal grant monies. Before this federal intervention the individual states were primarily responsible for public education.

After this became law public schools proceeded rapidly to fill in the economic gaps of the lower income families. Nourishment through providing full breakfast, lunch, some dinners, backpacks of food for the weekends and even food during the summer became a reality.

Currently in most county school districts financial means testing is no longer required for free food. The important moral values of family life were taught by being together at the table but were suddenly taken over by government schools. As these programs grew, the autonomy and authority of the family over their child’s life has diminished.

Psychological and social needs of public school children have gradually expanded as new services provided to students. Divorce, drugs, death, sex education, bullying and various other counseling groups took students out of their academic classes. Special education classes proliferated for all types of behavioral and educational deficiencies. Parents were even directed by school personnel to place their children on psychotropic medication even when mental health professional did not prescribe it. This drastic change in the decreasing influence of parents is the impetus for the Home School explosion and the “School Choice” movement.

Community service requirements have been institutionalized by the public school for non-profit groups supposedly to give students knowledge of the work world.

Currently many school districts are experimenting with directly indoctrinating students as community activists for social justice.

The seemingly innocuous community service program has morphed into “student activism.”

The community service hours can now be used for being involved in social change issues. Progressive advisors are empowered to encourage activities such as identifying and addressing social issues. Their tactics range from walkouts, empowering students to organize on social media and even protesting specific policies locally and in the state capital. Strategies from the book, Rules for Radicals of social activism are used but not underscored.

In essence, these students become the unpaid soldiers of the social justice march to socialism in our nation. Students are politically unsophisticated and too young to understand the political and social implications of these advocacy tactics.

Just like the Stoneman Douglas school shooting, after the horrendous mass shooting of innocent youths some were elevated by the media to instant experts on most social ills.

These students were empowered by the media, teachers and parents to speak on many issues of which they had limited knowledge. Many students on social media from all over the nation made their simplistic and naïve opinions heard online.

David Hogg and others of the school shooting celebrity status have been exploited by the political elites to rally adolescents to progressive causes without understanding the opposing side of the issue.

Winter Pictures The other month I was at my daughter’s house for a barbeque. It was my wife’s birthday (she’s still 49) and so we went there for a celebratory supper. My daughter took pictures of us sitting at the patio table outside, and again at the dining room table at the start of the meal. She posted them on Facebook, and I was shocked when I saw them, at how I appeared.

Understand that I seldom look at myself in the mirror. When I shave, I do so without glasses, and I comb my hair and blow my nose by feel.

I am content not knowing what I look like, and I insist that others respect my desire to be ignorant of such visuals.

I therefore demand that no one takes pictures of me other than in winter, and only outside. Out there in the cold I can hide my gut with a coat, my wrinkles with a beard, and my bags with sunglasses.

I don’t care about being bald, but since a lot of heat escapes from the head, I’ll be wearing a hat, and so every winter picture must include that.

Getting old is embarrassing. It feels like I’m always wearing a scary old man Halloween mask that I can’t

take off. And sometimes it feels like I’m also wearing a scary old man body suit, something off the hooks from the seasonal box at Exwork. My gristle doesn’t hurt, thanks to glucosamine, but everything around it is growing uncooperative.

It used to take me five minutes to trim my toenails, but yesterday it took twenty! Tactile chores are less precise and exertions require more breaths. All of that is fine, a sign of age if not wisdom, but I don’t want to see it, and I don’t want others to record it.

I have no doubt that my children will now attempt to take more summer pictures after reading this.

I’ll thwart their efforts with raised hands and hats, and if I have to I’ll use a can of silly string to block the shots. I’ll have to devise a holster. It’s important to me.

I’ve heard it said that a picture is worth a thousand words, but I’ve determined that more often it takes a thousand words to explain a picture. I asked my par-

ents when I was younger about the photos in their albums, and there are a whole lot of backstories, and forward-stories, to each and every one. So pictures are at best deceiving, inherently inaccurate, and only represent moments in time that are not always worth archiving.

If we lived far away and never saw our grandkids, I would not send current pictures—let’s not spook them about aging! But we are all neighbors, and so they will grow older with us and see it firsthand little by little.

That’s best, I think, but still I don’t want some sort of scrapbook, digital or otherwise, of our olden times.

All I know is that I like looking at pictures of my grandparents from the 60’s and 70’s, and my parents from the 70’s and 80’s.

Those are my favorites.

There are plenty of pictures of me and my hot wife from the 80’s and 90’s. Remember us from then. Don’t spoil the future with photos from now.

P.S. As far as all that goes, I prefer pictures of my kids from the 90’s.

As we are noticing in our everchanging world, when one person is offended over something, the new social acceptance solution is to stop what we are planning and allow that individual to change or prevent the desires of many. It now appears that new rules of order are being established with the supposed intention of not offending anyone. I understand the idea to try and accommodate everyone with whatever they believe but since we are trending toward a puzzling destination, I’m troubled that our culture is losing an understanding of right and wrong. I was raised with the idea that it takes a voting majority to make decisions and this seems simple enough, however, our world is now becoming more complicated and focused in the quest to be socially and politically correct. Some will say this way of thinking is not what it appears and is actually based on a one-sided agenda to muzzle certain views while promoting others but whatever the case, our lives are being impacted.

I am a certified fire chaplain and a faith-based member of our state emergency crisis response team.

This is a government agency and even though I am recognized as clergy, there are boundaries given to me such as not being allowed to randomly pray for those who are traumatized and especially if I intend on acknowledging the name of Jesus. I am also a volunteer chaplain for a veterans health care facility and again, I am limited with my intervention and continually reminded to restrain from using the name of Jesus because of the diversity in the resident population.

The laws of correctness have developed to the place where I would not be surprised if all prayer will eventually be banned in the public domain. We have already seen prayer and the Bible removed from our education system and there has even been a strong attempt to remove “one nation under God” from our pledge of allegiance. Based on what we have witnessed in the last 50 years, we know this agenda to eliminate public displays of religious expression will continue.

As Christians, we are called to follow the example of Christ in all that we do and we notice he was never intimidated by what people thought of him. He continually declared that his purpose was to obey what his father wanted and that was exactly what he did. How was he treated? People wanted his blessings but the government and even the religious world did not care for his dogmatic messages. Recently, I was asked to open in prayer at a horse racing track as a part of an honor presentation for veterans.

There was a color guard with various members of the armed forces, the national anthem, a live bugle rendition of taps and all the activities were to be simulcast around the world. When the opening ceremony was posted on the website, a horse racing family who lives in another country, called and said they were offended because it mentioned the day would open in prayer. So, in order to appease this family, the owners of the track called and told us there would be no prayer.

After a week of conversations, the organization did agree to allow a prayer but only if I would promise to not mention the name of Jesus.

Everything worked out fine and we were still able to effectively represent God and honor the Veterans. Yes, of course it’s disturbing to know that our freedom of speech was stepped on but even more important is the concern of where our religious liberties are heading.

I realize it would be impossible for everyone to agree on everything, but do you believe crucial decisions should be changed or canceled whenever one person disagrees?

It’s true we all have the right to protest, but since arguing accomplishes nothing except stirring and increasing more strife, should any group of people who want to express their convictions be stopped because someone objects? Should we as Christians fight against the world for our right to be heard and are we called to protest against others who do not believe like we do? I don’t think so. Number one: political and religious decisions will be controlled by the government which are decided by the masses.

Number two: we should love and respect everyone but our personal dedication and ultimate mission is to obey God.
