Harry T. Moore was an African American Educator and Civil rights advocate from Mims, Florida. Mims is located due east of us- near where State Road 50 comes out on the eastern side of Florida.

Mr. Moore represented African Americans he believed were wrongly accused

like the Groveland Four in 1948- when four African Americans were accused of raping a 17-year-old white girl. Two of the men were veterans of World War II. The trial had numerous irregularities and on appeal the US Supreme Court ordered a retrial, where the two living accused were convicted again.

Three local nonprofit organizations recently honored Mel Greene, a long-time Rotarian, for his generous contributions to their missions. The ceremony was held on Thursday, August 16 at the weekly meeting of the Rotary Club of Spring Hill.

Greene, who has been a Rotarian for forty-seven years, has supported many worthy causes in his lifetime. However, three organizations, in particular, wanted to thank him in a very special way.

One was the Veterans’ HEAT Factory, an organization that works with military men and women dealing with PTSD and helps them become more productive members of society. The acronym

Now, while this is a great accomplishment only achieved by a select few individuals, the important thing to remember is it isn’t only one person who can win the title; it takes the collective skills of an entire team.

And for head coach Scott Emmerman, his team just exemplified this statement.

CANDIDATE BIO PROVIDED BY CANDIDATE: Edward Spaight is a native of Hyde Park, New York and graduated from Siena College in 1992.

Edward then attended Western New England College School of Law in Springfield, Massachusetts.

He was an editor of the Law Review and graduated Magna Cum Laude. While he was in law school, Edward worked full-time with the New York State Department of Labor and traveled over ninety miles each way to attend school at night.

Following a post-graduate clerkship with the Maine Superior Court, Edward then accepted a position with the Vafiades, Brountas and Kominsky firm in Bangor, Maine.

While with VBK, Edward practiced corporate, civil and family law. He was a Director of the Penobscot County Bar Association and served as Vice-Chairman of the Family Law Section of the Maine State Bar Association. He was honored by the Maine Volunteer Lawyers project for his outstanding pro bono contributions. Edward was

also the Chairman of the Planning Board for the City of Brewer, Maine.

In 2009, Edward and his family moved to Citrus County to be closer to family. Edward has served since that time as an Assistant Public Defender in Inverness, Florida, and he has been the Chief Assistant Public Defender for Citrus County since September 2015. He served as President of the Citrus County Bar Association, was a Fellow in the Florida Bar Association Leadership Academy, and is a Deacon at Seven Rivers Presbyterian Church in Lecanto.

Edward lives in Inverness with his wife Veronica, a teacher, and their two daughters.

Q & A WITH EDWARD SPAIGHT What event/experience(s) spurred your desire to seek this position?

Judge Patricia Thomas told me that she was going to be retiring and encouraged me to run for her seat.

I was honored that Judge Thomas – who has served our community as a Circuit Court Judge for 25 years – felt that I would be a good judge. I then reached out to other people in the community – the judges who I appear in front of every day, the bailiffs and courtroom clerks, law enforcement officers and the attorneys and prosecutors who I practice with and against. I was humbled by the support and encouragement I received from the people who have seen the way I practice law and who know the kind of judge I will be. I will be a judge who follows the law, and a humble servant who treats people with fairness and respect. After discussing it with my wife and children, after talking to my friends and praying on it, I decided to run.

A judge must be able to handle a heavy caseload effectively and efficiently and must always treat all people involved with the court system – clerks, bailiffs, attorneys and litigants -- with respect. He spent the first 21 years of his career protecting his community serving as a police officer, major crimes detective, FBI agent, and felony prosecutor. From 2007 to 2011 Don led the Hernando County State Attorney’s Office supervising a staff of 27 people and thousands of criminal prosecutions.

In 2011, Don moved over to the Clerk’s Office where he served as Director of Court Services and General Counsel. In 2012, Don was elected to his first of two terms as your Hernando County Clerk of Circuit Court. In addition to being the elected Clerk, Don has continued to serve as general counsel for his office handling all of the litigation and legal needs for this complex, multi-million dollar organization. The Clerk’s Office is truly the face of the court system.

STEPP, KELLY JOSEPH YOB: 1985 CHARGES: RETAIL THEFT (SHOPLIFTING), CRIMINAL MISCHIEF Arrested at: 08/14/2018 12:10 BROAD ST & STUR ST, MASARYKTOWN, FL, 34609 Arrest Summary: On 08/14/2018 I responded to the Dollar General located at 399 Broad Street reference a subject who removed a bottle of lighter fluid from a sales rack outside the front door. The subject was then observed walking with the lighter fluid to the dumpster where he sprayed the fluid and used his lighter to set it on fire. The subject’s actions were observed by a customer who reported the incident to the on duty manager. The manager went in the parking lot at the time to observe the dumpster on fire and a male subject walking away from the dumpster wearing a green in color shirt with black shorts. The subject was further observed with a full beard.

A canvass of the area was conducted and contact was made

with the defendant, Kelly Stepp, who matched the description of the subject given by the manager. Kelly was detained by this deputy. Kelly was read his Miranda Rights to which he understood. Kelly at first advised he did not want to speak with me, however then advised he did; while walking back to my patrol vehicle Kelly stated, “It was a good breakfast sandwhich,I had to make my food hot”. Kelly was secured in the rear of the patrol vehicle as he made several other statements to include “If you burn it, it won’t come back it had a disease in it”. Kelly stated, “There was something like a disease in there, you can smell it”. Kelly was asked, “what did you do?”

Kelly advised, “I put lighter fluid on it, and lite it on fire to get rid of it because I care”. Kelly advised he removed the lighter fluid off the rack. Kelly stated, “They should be the one to provide the fuel its there problem”. Kelly stated, “I should get paid for that, not punished”. Kelly stated, “I should get an Oscar Grammy for that”. Kelly further advised, “I did a double duty, sometimes you burn a disease and warm your breakfast at the same time”.

Kelly advised he used the purple lighter which was located in his right pocket.

The video surveillance footage from the facility showed Kelly selecting the lighter fluid at 10:50:59 hours and walking away with it, making no attempt to pay for the item which is valued at $4.00 according to the on duty Manager.

Burn marks were observed on the dumpster by this deputy.

The manager wished for Kelly to be charged with the theft of the lighter fluid and the criminal mischief.

Kelly was transported to the Hernando County Jail where he was turned over to staff without incident. Kelly is being held on a bond totaling $2,000.00.

Kelly was provided a court date of 09/07/2018 at 0900 hours in Courtroom B.

The defendant then began to turn away and would not allow me to properly detain her, after numerous verbal commands and assistance from other deputies on scene she was later successfully detained. I then attempted to place the defendant into the back seat of my marked patrol vehicle, at which time she would not comply. Myself and other deputies on scene escorted her into the vehicle due to her lack of willingness.

While transporting the defendant to the Hernando County Jail, the defendant began to use her feet to kick the back windows of my marked patrol vehicle, resulting in myself having to pull over at/ near the intersection of Cortez Blvd and WPA Rd where I waited for back up deputies, leg registrants were then placed on the defendant. After said incident, the defendant was successfully transported to the Hernando County Jail.

Probable cause was established for the aforementioned charges, the defendant was charged accordingly.

completed a traffic stop on a vehicle in the area of Broad Street and County Line Road, within Hernando County, after observing the driver driving with a suspended license. The defendant, Christine Giraud, was found to be sitting in the rear on the passenger side of the vehicle.

During a consensual search of the vehicle, Deputy M. located two pieces of marijuana cigarettes in the front center in the front center console. At that time the driver (Johnathon Pelletier) and front passenger (Adrianne Lazzara) were taken into custody.

The defendant was asked to step out of the vehicle, in which upon doing so she was holding a purse. At that time, we then asked the defendant if we could search her purse for any weapons or illegal narcotics, which she agreed to.

Upon completing a search of the purse while in the defendant’s presence, a small black digital scale was located along with a black zippered pouch which was labeled “DOPE”. Upon opening the black zippered pouch, a large number of small zip lock baggies (which are commonly used in the selling of illegal narcotics) were located inside, in which several of them contained a white crystal like residue. Further search of the pouch revealed a small zip lock baggie containing a crystal like substance inside, and another zip lock baggie containing 10 small round blue pills labeled with the imprint 031 R. At that time, the defendant was detained and placed in the rear seat of Deputy M’s patrol vehicle. A further search of the purse revealed a small glass jar with a purple lid that also contained a crystal like substance inside and a hard plastic straw that contained a crystal like residue.

A check of Drugs.com revealed the 10 pills to be 1 mg Alprazolam which Drugs.com showed as being a schedule 4 controlled substance. The pills weighed a total amount of 1.3 grams which were weighed on a OHAUS scale model number C305-S serial number 47871, located at the jail.

The crystal like substance located in the small zip lock bag and the small glass jar were tested with Narco Pouch 923 which yielded a positive result for methamphetamine. The crystal like substance in the zip lock bag and glass jar were also both later weighed utilizing OHAUS scale model number C305-S serial number 47871, located at the jail, in which the substance with the bag weighed a total amount of 1.3 grams and the substance in the small glass jar weighed a total amount of 16.5 grams.

Post Miranda, the defendant admitted to having knowledge of the methamphetamine that was inside the small zip lock baggie and small glass jar being in her purse.

The defendant was then placed under arrest and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident where she was charged with 1 count of possession of methamphetamine with intent to sell, 1 count of possession of a controlled substance (Alprazolam), and one count of possession of paraphernalia. The defendant was issued a bond amount of $8,000.00 and given a court date of 09-17-18 at 0830 hours in room E of the Hernando County courthouse.

he observed the defendant to be on his phone while driving, which concerned him. The victim advised that he then asked the defendant if he could stay off his phone while driving, at which point the victim alleged the defendant became extremely aggressive. The victim stated that the defendant then immediately pulled into the IHOP restaurant, located at 3660 Commercial Way, in Spring Hill, Hernando County, Florida, and ordered him out of the vehicle. The victim stated that at first he hesitated due to not having any transportation. The victim stated that the defendant then stated, “I’m going to give you five seconds to get out of my vehicle.” The victim stated that due to the fear of possible violence he complied with the defendant’s order and subsequently exited the vehicle.

The victim stated that upon exiting the vehicle, he went to the rear passenger door to remove his infant child. While in the process of removing the child, the victim stated that the defendant grabbed him by the neck with both hands and began to squeeze tightly. The victim advised that this lasted for approximately three seconds before the defendant finally stopped. The victim stated that the defendant then grabbed him by his shirt, which caused an approximate two inch tear, to remove him from the vehicle. The victim did state that during this time frame, he was unable to breathe due to the defendant constricting his airway.

The victim did provide a sworn written statement that was placed into Records.

Observation of the victim did reveal him to have bright red marks around his neck consistent with that of being strangled. The victim also had approximately five superficial wounds on his neck from the defendant’s fingernails.

Contact was then made with two IHOP employees, who were impartial to both the victim and suspect. Both employees provided similar statements advising that the victim was strangled by the defendant. Both witnesses provided a sworn statement, which was placed into Records.

Contact was then made with the defendant who did admit to this offense. The defendant advised that he grabbed Daniel by the neck due to him taking too long to exit the vehicle. The defendant did provide a sworn statement which was placed into Evidence.

A copy was later placed into Records.

The defendant was then taken into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident. Once at the jail, the defendant was given a court date of 09/12/2018, and held on a bond of $1000.

RADIKE, RACHEL GHALE YOB: 1988 CHARGES: DOMESTIC BATTERY Arrested at: 08/19/2018 03:30 BEACHVIEW DR, SPRING HILL, FL, 34606 Arrest Summary: On 8/19/18 at approximately 0250 hours, I responded to Beachview Drive in reference to a 911 hang up.

Upon arrival I could hear the defendant and the victim, in an extremely loud verbal altercation, and I could subsequently see through an open window the defendant hitting the victim. I then made entry into the residence through the unlocked front door due to exigent circumstances that existed, and the fear that the victim would be severely harmed.

I witnessed the defendant throw a wooden chair at the victim hitting him in his chest. The defendant then walked outside the residence through the back door.

The defendant was subsequently placed into custody.

Post Miranda the defendant did not wish to speak to me about the incident, she further stated, “let’s go take me in.”

The victim then came outside and I could visibly see physical injuries such as a large red lump on his forehead, which appeared to have bite marks on it and blood on his chest and neck area. The victim was battered against his will.

It should be noted both parties reside together as a boyfriend and girlfriend and the parties are romantically involved which made this offense domestic in nature.

The defendant was placed into custody and transported to the Hernando County Jail without incident where she is being held on a NO BOND status. The defendant will have a mandatory court date at the Hernando County Courthouse in Courtroom C on the date of 09/14/18 at 09:00 AM.

DOB/02-10-1986, just before the 9-1-1 call was placed this morning.

O’Callaghan performed CPR on the infant until fire rescue arrived and took over.

Sadly, at 12:06 p.m., Keyton O’Callaghan was pronounced deceased by a physician at Oak Hill Hospital.

It is unknown, at this time, how long little Keyton had been in the car. Detectives are still working to establish a

chronological timeline of events.

Detectives are still in the process of interviewing Cami Lee Moyer.

Update The investigation into the death of nine-monthold Keyton O’Callaghan continues to be a priority for Hernando County Sheriff’s detectives.

All death investigations, especially those involving children and/ or infants, are handled in a very thorough and methodical manner. Our detectives are committed to using every resource necessary to ensure this investigation is handled with the utmost attention to detail, given the circumstances surrounding this incident.

Once detectives have completed their fact finding (investigation), the case will be turned over to the Office of the State Attorney (SAO).

Many of you have asked how long the infant was in the car.

That is a very important part of this investigation, one that we are unable to provide a definitive answer to at the present time.

Rest assured, our detectives will leave no stone unturned as they investigate this case.

Anonymity in surveys is important. The respondent needs to be secure that their answers will not be traced back to them, even if there is a public records request. That’s something McDonald could not guarantee this year after an attorney requested and received from USF the redacted 2016-2017 documentation. McDonald stated that this year, no names or IP addresses were captured so that data provided in the report’s unredacted copy to the school board represents uncorrected responses to the open-ended questions.

McDonald said the 2017-2018 survey was determined to be highly reliable. In other words, “Does it measure what it intends to measure?”

The number of respondents (938) also indicates that the data is reliable.

(Any number greater than 600 shows increased reliability.) The results were stable regardless of whether the respondent had answered last year’s survey or if this was the first survey completed.

The team used the Linear Logistic Test Model, where negative numbers showed an endorsement of (or agreement with) an item. Where the respondent worked, and at what level, had an impact on the results. For example, a school administrator would look at Romano’s performance differently than an instructional staff member or a school board member.

As part of the sample provided to the school board, Dr. Lee randomized the list and then chose the top three results. On the five-point scale, an average of 4.5 = 90%, and the corresponding “logit” is seen as a negative number.

Only differences greater than .5 (10-12%) were noted as significant or valid.

McDonald stated several times that the results seem to be backward from what you might expect to see, where negative numbers are good and positive numbers are not.

Anything over 80% is a “good” number, he said.

If the person who is the subject of the survey is performing adequately, the scores should be around 4.0, with an average of around 80%, meaning the person being evaluated was “effective” or “very effective.” An exceptional performance should show at least 4.5 or greater.

CREAM’s results show that there “was not a statistically different change” between the 2017 and 2018 surveys. None of the results are below -.073.

McDonald stated there is no significant change in Romano’s performance from one year to the next.

The survey covered nine areas, or domains.

Communication, Community relations, and Curriculum Planning and Development, showed the greatest weakness (poorest performance) for Romano. Values and Ethics of Leadership had the highest performance, and Leadership and District Culture also had higher scores. Labor relations had almost no change.

Overall, the highest rated responses did not reach the 4.0 mark but hovered between the 3.0 – 3.5 range. The lowest rated responses were generally between 2.0 And 2.5. As noted above, the responses related to Romano’s communication with the community, media, and others.

no as “effective” or “needs improvement,” and some chose to add comments as well. While the chart appeared to show that the majority of respondents indicated that Romano needed to improve in most areas, McDonald’s phrasing was that Romano was “improved.”

“Being effective doesn’t necessarily mean positive,” McDonald said. “Needs improvement always needs improvement.” The comments of those who responded were provided to the school board so they could read and understand why selecting “effective” could be seen as negative.

Leadership and District Culture: Romano received high marks from district staff and administrators, but the marks from both instructional and non-instructional staff were very low by comparison.

“Where you work and what you do,” McDonald said, “has a bearing on what you believe. It matters what role you have.”

Policy and Governance: Again, district administrators and staff rated Romano highly, but those who worked with students directly or were non-instructional staff, felt she needed a lot of improvement in this area.

Communications and Community Relations: Across the board, respondents saw that this was an area where Romano needed improvement.

Organizational Management: Both district staff and instructional staff felt that Romano was lacking in this area. School and district administrators as well as non-instructional staff found this a positive area for Romano.

Curriculum Planning and Development: All levels of staff, from non-instructional to district administrators, felt Romano needed great improvement in this domain. Though McDonald stated that the scores did not meet the criteria of a 0.5 statistically significant change, it does represent that she performed poorly here when compared to last year.

Instructional Leadership: Romano received the most positive responses here from school administrators and from some instructional and district staff.

Human Resources Management: Romano scored poorly in this domain as well. School administrators, even more than the district staff and instructional staff, felt this was an area where she needed improvement.

Values and Ethics of Leadership: Romano was perceived as being highly effective in this area. School administrators gave Romano the highest marks of all those who responded here, but she received good marks from all areas of staff.

Labor Relations: The only positive scores here came from district staff and district administrators. The response from school administrators reflects a change from last year, as there were no positive responses at all.

Over the course of the two evaluations, Romano did not show any real or statistical improvement, according to McDonald.

For 2017, Romano’s overall rating was 2.86 and in 2018 her rating was 2.1, or approximately 56% endorsement (approval). The issues at Moton Elementary seemed to be the subject of many comments.

Discussion turned to the number of students able to be accommodated both in zoned and magnet schools. Kennedy reported that the number of zoned seats set by each school dictates how many magnet seats are available.

Dr. Lee stated that the Superintendent would be judged on his own merits and not as a comparison to Dr. Romano.

“You don’t want people to be fearful of an evaluation,” Lee said. “You want them to use the information. It gives the people in your district an opportunity to tell you what they think. It’s up to you to decide how to use that information.”

Though the survey is a good tool, Lee cautioned that it should not be the only tool that the school board uses to evaluate or measure the Superintendent’s performance.

Brooksville scrutinizes budget, considers employee raises for fy 2018-2019

Brooksville City Council held a six-and-a-half hour Budget Workshop on August 13, 2018, where the members discussed the budgets of several funds, most of them under the Public Works Department. Salary increases for city employees were discussed in greater detail, with the entire council in agreement with a salary increase for non-management or executive employees, up to 5%.

Merit increases for manager-level and above were also discussed.

Other initiatives for the coming fiscal year were Fire and Police Pension impacts, and the city’s possible liability for $810,000.

budget for Fiscal Year 2018-2019 (FY18-19) Council Member William Kemerer, who is a retired finance professional spent some extra time scrutinizing the budget for Fleet and Sanitation.

“I want to make sure we’re not over budgeting anything,” Kemerer said, expressing his discomfort over increases in numbers from the prior fiscal year so shortly after the recent budget crisis that was the impetus for the disbanding of the Brooksville Police Department.

“We went through this last year, and I hoped we wouldn’t have to do it

again this year, but I’m going to do it again this year to get these numbers back down to where they belong.”

The council members, Radacky and Finance Director Jim Delach discussed numerous items in detail listed in the 106-page budget, particularly new items and those showing increases.

During the July 23, 2018 meeting, the council questioned the city’s responsibility to provide work boots and Gatorade for city employees, and ultimately voted to keep the items in the budget.

An early morning surrounded by nature can truly be theraphic for those that love being outdoors and especially kayaking along the Chassahowitzka River.

Sabal palms, Cedar and Oaks trees line the banks of this 5 mile spring-fed river and kayaking is one sure way to not miss any sightings of wildlife that thrives in this amazing Florida habitat.

Words cannot express how beautiful this area is and even though the personal inspiration may be different from one to another, this is the Real Florida.

Florida Master Naturalist Jodi Spaulding was born and raised in Florida and her love for the Nature Coast is as pure as the environment she surrounds herself with.

“I love being on the river,” Jodi said. “I have been around it my whole life.”

Because of her strong passion to share her knowledge of the environment she grew up around, she decided to offer nature lovers an educational adventure along the Chassahowitzka River by starting her own business.

In 2017 Jodi pursued her goal and created Nature Coast Eco Tours LLC. “I am really into the ecosystems and understanding how everything works,” Jodi said “I like to talk to people about the ecosystem, I like to break it down to a simpler way for people to understand.”

Nature Coast Eco tours, based out of Citrus County, offers 4 kayak adventures.

‘The Crack Adventure,’ is a trip to a tucked away salt spring in the shape of a crack, located at the end of Bairds Creek. It is a 2 hour tour roundtrip. The Halls River Guided Tour, also 2 hours roundtrip, is suitable for beginners.

The Halls River is a 3 mile tributary to the Homosassa River. While most of the Halls River runs through

state lands, there are some interesting houses to see along the way in addition to 3 springs. Ruth Springs Kayak Tour, is a three hour tour for the more experienced paddler as it requires a 7 minute paddle up the fast narrow flow of Ruth Spring to reach the headspring. The paddle up is demanding, but it’s a fun ride heading back.

The Salt Creek Kayak Tour on the Chassahowitzka River is a 2-3 hour tour for moderate and advanced paddlers. Salt Creek is not well known since the mouth of the creek is difficult to find. It is a winding creek that offers many opportunities for wildlife viewing.

These kayak tours are not just about witnessing the real Florida, you will also be learning about the ecosystems. How the river works, what plants and wildlife thrive in wetland habitats.

“It’s understandable that we all want to enjoy something this beautiful and we all deserve to,” Jodi said.

“However we should have responsibility to take care of it and that is my focus point for people to understand.”

Protecting the ecological health of the river is also what Jodi strives to do, along with other members of the Chassahowitzka River Keepers, a nonprofit organization.

Refreshing with a squeeze of lime, or kicked up with a dusting of ground

Don’t wait until Halloween to display your creative carving skills. Make an eye-catching melon basket for serving a fruit salad or fruit kebabs.

Slightly trim off one end of a washed melon so that it stands upright. Slice off the other end 1/4 of the way down, then scoop out the flesh with a melon baller.

Use pumpkin-carving tools or paring knife to carve patterns or words on the outside without cutting through the rind. Cut zigzags around the rim, if you wish. Refill cavity with fruit salad, and garnish with fresh mint for a spectacular presentation.

Molasses Baked Beans Ingredients 1 onion, diced 1 green pepper, diced ½ tsp. Kosher salt 4 cans navy beans (drained) 10 slices bacon 1 ¼ cup ketchup ¼ cup molasses 4 tsp dry mustard ½ tsp pepper Directions Cook bacon, then coarsely crumble

Cook onions, green pepper with salt for about 10 minutes In bowl, add together all ingredients: cooked bacon and onions, green pepper, salt, beans, ketchup, molasses, dry mustard and pepper. Mix together well.

Pour mixture into baking pan and bake covered in oven at 325 degrees for about 1 hour.

Florida’s bowhunting Jamboree

Toby Benoit is a best selling novelist and professional outdoorsman with thirty-five years of experience guiding and outfitting for big game all across America. Toby is a renowned archer and turkey hunting expert who manufactures custom game calls and is a regular judge at NWTF sanctioned turkey calling events across the Southeast.

Last week I told you about the newly opened Alligator Season here in Florida and promised to bring you updates from the hunt. Unfortunately, I have no updates to offer at this time as I’m being plagued by marine gremlins attacking my boat’s motor. As I write this, I’m still waiting on parts to arrive…. sad times. But there is still a lot of season left and Lord knows that there are plenty gators, so I’ll keep my promise to offer updates, but they’ll be a while.

For now, as I wait on my boat repairs, I’m staying active with my bow.

Archery season is right around the corner and I’m working hard to improve my distance judgements and instinctive style of shooting. Muscle memory is important as when that moment of harvest is upon me, I want to be able to draw, aim and fire accurately without hesitation. The more you practice, the more confidence you can carry with you into the woods.

That type of practice is why I so highly recommend events like the Florida Bowhunter’s Council, Bowhunter’s Jamboree, which is coming again to the Holder Mine campground of the Citrus Wildlife Management Area. Labor Day weekend, September 1st, 2nd and 3rd will be the 57th annual Jamboree, odd that the City of Inverness hasn’t embraced the bowhunting community as the Jamboree brings significant revenue to our community and has since 1961. Anyway, competitive classes will be restricted to the first 850 entries, but there will as well be a host of novelty shoots, including the popular running deer venue for all classes of archers.

The best part of it is that this competition began as a tune-up for hunting season and it remains so to this day, as all competitors are required to use hunting equipment and broadhead tipped arrows (except for the novelty shoots). I’ve shot the two ranges many times with my best finish landing me in second place many years ago.

The course is beautiful, the people and fellow competitors are always wonderful, and the event planners each year have been perfect hosts. And

the lessons learned about your own readiness to hunt can be invaluable. Shooting known distances on a closed course is great, but a walk through unknown distance shoot, set up exactly how you will be entering the woods on opening morning, well that’s an opportunity I can’t encourage you enough to take advantage of.

There are a few other ranges in our area, run by archery clubs, which offer similar opportunities, such as the Drawn By Grace club hosting shoots at the Chinsegut Conservation Center on Lake Lindsey Rd just a short drive north of Brooksville every second Saturday of the month. As well, a short google search for 3D Archery tournaments turned up a ton of shooting opportunities. So join me out on the ranges and let’s prep your gear and take it on a test drive; I’d hate for you to have any unfortunate opening day surprises.

County pre-season prep football recaps

After long hours in the weight-room and competing in 7-on-7 passing leagues throughout the summer months, finally teams around the state of Florida got on the field for preseason play. That included several of the teams within Hernando County, as Central, Nature Coast, Springstead and Weeki Wachee will all take the field this week. Hernando was the only county club that didn’t have a preseason matchup. The Leopards begin the regular season this week on the road when they face Fivay. We take a look at the four preseason games that took place and featured Hernando County teams.

Springstead 68, Hudson 0: It was swift. It

was high scoring. It was dominant. Springstead controlled every facet of the game, as they blew past Hudson 68-0 in last week’s preseason classic.

Quarterback Nathan Sims was at the helm under center and he had the offense humming all evening long. The Eagles led 55-0 heading into the final quarter of play.

Nature Coast Technical 48, Clearwater Superior Collegiate Academy 34: If people wanted to know if Nature Coast Technical is for real, many naysayers got their answers last week when the Sharks put on an impressive performance against Superior Collegiate Academy.

The Sharks were down 20-15 at halftime and then went on to out score SCA 33-14 in

the second half. Nature Coast is on the road this week at Ridgeview.

Weeki Wachee 22, Tavares 8: The Hornets started off the preseason with a bang, as they were able to get past Tavares 22-8 last Friday. Weeki Wachee boasts some of the top offensive weapons in Hernando County and they were on full display in preseason action.

Playing at home, the Hornets now head into a season full of high expectations with the return of quarterback Vaughn Sykora and running back Sebastian Class.

Groveland South Lake 49, Central 14: The Bears took their licks at the ‘Bears Den’ and fell in a 49-14 romp against Groveland South Lake. The contest was the second unofficial game under new head coach John Warren.

Central starts off the season this week when they face rival Springstead on the road.

Preaching a form of brotherhood and consistency from his young group of players, coach Emmerman‘s team went to Lumberton, North Carolina and won the final machine pitch World Series tournament against South Carolina’s representative.

“Our goal this year was to go to the (World Series) and win after finishing in third place at states last season”, said Emmerman. “Having the dedication from not only the players but also their parents makes it realize just how special this accomplishment is.”

Their path to the title was nothing short of domination. Starting out through district play, the team went undefeated, winning each matchup handily. Following the district win, they went to states and won seven straight following a loss in the opener. Victory in Lumberton, however, wasn’t going to be easy.

According to Emmerman, “Once reaching the World Series, to win we needed to win six games.

They (South Carolina) beat us in one game, which set up a rubber match for the championship, which the boys won 6-2. They work so hard, this group of kids, never getting down, always

picking each other up, and never being selfish.

Baseball is a game of failures, and our boys know what it’s like to experience the failures needed to bring about success.”

And that brotherhood Emmerman preaches?

That brings familiarity and friendship. “We have a core group of kids who have been together here since junior rookies, and they do everything together. They hang out together, train together, you name it. And it builds a sense of trust that they can utilize later in life, because trusting your teammates can ultimately decide victory or defeat.”

One of the rights of summer is the Lemonade Stand.The Barr children wanted to set one up this summer. On the last week before school, they made it happen in the Southern Belle Realty parking lot.

The Lemonade sales and donations were split between two dog charities: Jimmy’s Angels Rescue and Dollars for Dogs. The Lemonade stand wound up collecting more than $500 for the dog charities.

Jimmy’s Angels Rescue is a foster based organization. They say, “We pride ourselves on helping the community’s animals in their time of need and in a variety of ways, including but not limited to financially assisting with vetting emergencies and assisting the homeless communities with vetting and feeding their animals. We take in homeless and abandoned animals to vet and care for until loving homes can be found.”

Dollars for Dogs is run by Harrison- another kid interested in helping our furry friends. The Hernando Sun wrote an article in December of 2016 on Dollars for Dogs when Harrison was just 10 years old. Dollars for Dogs helps pay for emergency veterinary care for people who can’t afford or weren’t expecting such an expense.

The charity also sponsors the treatment for heartworm positive dogs in shelters, so they could be adopted.

Emily Barr commented, “I’m overwhelmed by the community support and it was an excellent lesson for the kids. Their sweet idea had a ripple effect and has made an impact farther than they understand. These are the lessons I’m happy they are learning!”

Shepherd lovers Remi needs you! Remi has been at the shelter about 3 months and has come so far! He was confiscated from a cruelty/ neglect case and unfortunately was never socialized as a young dog. He is about 3 years old and is now part of the protégé shelter dog program at the shelter. He loves people and cats but at this time does need to be an only dog. He is eager to please and is learning so much. In his kennel he is loud and sounds pretty mean but he is not. He just wants your attention and wants to go outside! Rainbow Roller Land Closed

The owner of Rainbow Rollerland announced that they are closing the rink last week. Roller skaters took their final laps around the rink the weekend of Aug. 11 and 12. GREENE from Page 1 HEAT stands for Honor, Empower, Assist and Train. Gus Guadagnino, who founded the organization last October, saw that there was a need for this type of service.

He set aside part of the building that houses his business, Joni Industries, for this purpose and put a lot of his own money into the project.

“We were at a point a few months ago where we were running out of money and then I get a check in the mail from Mel,” Guadagnino stated.

Greene’s reason for contributing to the Veterans HEAT Factory was very simple.

“I’m a World War II veteran. I went to the site and saw what they were doing to help the veterans and I was impressed,” Greene explained.

As a token of their appreciation, Guadagnino presented Greene with a brass eagle statuette containing a bible verse inscribed on the base.

The Boys and Girls Club of Hernando County, Inc. was another recipient of Greene’s generosity.

In July one of the buses the organization uses for transporting children to and from schools and for field trips was damaged.

Greene donated money to help get it fixed.

McNamee and Jennifer DeFrancesco, the Unit Director for Westside Elementary School, presented a photo of the bus with the children standing in front of it to Greene as a thank you for his donation.

The Arc Nature Coast also received a substantial donation from Greene. The funds went toward its capital campaign to replace the facility on the Neff Lake campus in Brooksville. Through the Rotary Club, Greene has been a long-time supporter of this worthwhile organization.

“I met Mark Barry [Executive Director of The Arc Nature Coast] when he came to speak at one of our meetings,” said Greene. “I bought brick pavers as a memorial to my late wife, Judy, and my late daughter, Debbie Koenig.”

Total fleet expenses have increased from $95,019.87 to $109,192.97, a $14,173.10 increase in the budget from last year, of which, $10,000 is slated for a vehicle lift used to service city vehicles. Sanitation expenses have also increased $18,066.56 due to reported increased costs of fuel, repair supplies and solid waste disposal.

Sanitation personnel costs are reported to be decreased by approximately $36,000.

In studying the sanitation division’s reserve fund, Kemerer noted that it currently contains over one year worth of revenue. “Is there a reason why we need to carry that size reserve? We’re accumulating a huge stockpile of cash, we really can’t use it anywhere else. Are we just accumulating cash because we can? It’s our resident’s money (commercial and residential). I don’t want to get anybody too excited here, but if there’s a way we can give our residents a break, and our commercial businesses a break, then maybe we should look at reducing these rates.” He noted the incremental additions to the reserve fund over four years, and said, “If we were an independent, for-profit corporation, this would be great, but as a governmental agency, is this somewhere we can give our taxpayers a break, and make us more competitive when people are deciding if (they) want to live in the city or the county.” Kemerer directed city staff to consider this finding.

City Manager Mark Kutney cautioned that the reserve is an enterprise fund, one that can only be used for a specific purpose, in this case, for the needs of the sanitation division. Special Revenue Funds There are several funds that are no longer relevant with the closure of the police department.

According to Finance Director Jim Delach, his research into what can be done with these funds is inconclusive, so balances in those accounts will be discussed in a later meeting.

Water connection fees and wastewater connection fees are income sources with no projected expenditures in the coming fiscal year. City staff will investigate to find if reclaimed water expansion can be funded with reserves in these funds.

Howell Avenue sidewalks are to be funded by the Local Option Gas Tax, a distribution received by the state from

collected gas taxes.

Capital Improvements Maintenance Capital Improvement Plans were discussed in the July 23rd meeting, and the need for better documentation and follow-through. The 2019-2020 budget is expected to reflect a six-year capital improvements and maintenance program, described as a “big initiative for next year” by Kutney.

Some of the funded projects in the new fiscal year include; City Hall second-floor restroom renovations are expected to cost approximately $12,000. Delach also reported the desire to start an air-conditioning replacement fund to collect $25,000 per year.

Parks and Recreation’s press box roof is to cost $6,500, and the roof over the McKethan restroom is expected to be around $5,500.

In 1934, Mr. Moore started the Brevard branch of the NAACP. In 1937, with the assistance of Thurgood Marshall, Mr. Moore sued for equal pay for African American teachers. The lawsuit was eventually lost, but it spawned other lawsuits, so that equal pay was eventually achieved.

In 1941, Mr. Moore organized the Florida State Conference of the NAACP where he was chosen as Executive Secretary of the Florida NAACP.

Florida is a closed primary state, so the only way to be involved in picking the candidate in the primary is to be in the same party as the candidate. If the Democratic candidate always wins you would need to be a Democrat in order the choose which candidate represents the Democrats in the general election.

Many in the NAACP were not happy about Mr. Moore intermingling the NAACP and the Progressive Voters League. The NAACP attempted to maintain a reputation as non-partisan and the vast majority of its leaders were Republicans.

Attitudes were changing, with many African Americans returning from serving their country in World War II, the status quo was no longer acceptable.

In 1944, there were approximately 20,000 African Americans registered as Republicans in Florida and none registered as Democrats. That same year the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that blocking African Americans from joining the Democratic Party primary was unconstitutional in the Smith v. Allwright case.

In February of 1945 African Americans voted in the Miami and Daytona Beach Democratic primaries, but had difficulty in other areas.

Many were also blocked from switching from the Republican party.

In 1946, Harry Moore and his wife Harriette were fired from their jobs as teachers in Brevard.

tion as an organizer for the Florida NAACP. That same year the Supreme Court of Florida ruled that African Americans could vote in the Democratic Primaries.

Mr. Moore’s struggles to register voters started to pay off, in 1946 Florida had 32,280 African Americans registered as Democrats and 15,877 as Republicans. By 1950 there were more than 116,000 African Americans registered as Democrats in Florida and very few Republicans.

This did not sit well with the NAACP’s Republican leadership.

Mr. Moore who was the head of Florida’s branch of the NAACP was no longer invited to NAACP meetings. His position was changed

to unpaid and finally in November 1951, Mr. Moore was fired from his position as the NAACP Executive Director of the Florida Branch.

On Christmas Day in 1951, a bomb was set off under the Moore’s home killing Harry T. Moore and his wife Harriette. There was an international outcry.

After his death Langston Hughes wrote the commemorative poem “The Ballad of Harry T. Moore.” The NAACP awarded Moore the Spingarn Medal which is given annually to an African American for “outstanding achievement.” Newspapers around the world editorialized about his murder.

Other nations registered their protests to his

murder at the United Nations. The NAACP held large rallies in major cities including one at Madison Square Gardens in New York. In the outcry over the Moores’ murder the NAACP raised over a million dollars according to Before His Time: The Untold Story of Harry T. Moore, America’s First Civil Rights Martyr by Ben Green, Stetson Kennedy.

Moore’s legacy as an important civil rights leader was largely forgotten. Recently, Mr. Moore is receiving renewed recognition with several books and movies about his life. In 2013, Harry T. Moore and Harriette Moore were inducted into the Florida Civil Rights Hall of Fame.

Special Dance Programs for Pre-K to K Children Live Oak Conservatory now offers special classes for pre-K level and primary level dance and acro.

‘White deplorables’ are being scapegoated “First they came for the baker, I did not speak up.

Then they came for the powerless Whites and I did not speak up because I was scared.

-Paraphrased from Martin Neimoller Currently in our US culture it is common to call almost any white person “racist,” as long as they do not belong to a privileged class. If you are Hispanic with snow-white skin, you are given a pass. Homosexuals cannot be pronounced as racist as they are from a group that has been discriminated against. The same rationale can be used for transgender or any other group that has been stamped with “privileged class status.”

A “Black” person who can be any shade of color including white can use the “N” word towards any person who identifies as Black and not be racist. At this cultural moment a Black person can probably get away with calling another member of the privileged class a derogatory term with total immunity.

Almost any human who appears or identifies as “White” is automatically “racist.” These people can be recent immigrants from countries considered primarily dominated by white citizens, as they will be susceptible to be called racist unless they also identify with LGBT or another privileged class. The only conclusion an alien from another world could logically determine is an overwhelming number of Whites are racist.

The problem with this assessment is that the White elites are the ones who have called Whites “racist” and the others the “privileged classes.”

Doesn’t this power to identify Whites as racist make the judging person also a racist? Obviously all Whites cannot be racist.

Of course not all Whites were born with a “silver spoon in their mouth” except the majority of the elite Whites. However, the elite Whites are exempt from being “racist” for they were the ones who devised the classification system.

In fact the elite Whites are the ones who have always had the power as a group to influence the outcomes they wanted.

Imagine, this small group of power elites said that Whites could be Racist because they have power while Blacks and other groups do not. The ridiculousness of this pronouncement is the vast majority of American Whites did not have one iota of influence as immigrants when they arrived here from all over the world.

While the White elites were going to the best private schools and joining the most powerful levels of government and business, most “deplorable Whites” were fighting themselves up the economic ladder.

By defining all Whites as racist, the power elites have scapegoated an entire group of people to the status of “haters.” The only way for Whites to avoid the label of “racist” is for some of them to turn on other Whites, calling them racist or falling silent. Hitler used this technique against the Jewish people and other groups such as homosexuals, Catholics or gypsies to divide and conquer his people. This tactic disguised the radical nationalistic agenda of conquering the world.

“Race” is an arbitrary term that cannot be defined by scientific, genetic, social or cultural constructs.

President Obama was labeled Black although he had a White mother and a Black father. This is definitely not scientific. Nevertheless, by dividing the nation into racial and behavioral subgroups the elites can manipulate and encourage social unrest to produce great governmental change.

This Orwellian governmental system has real consequences. The Goosebumps Coin

The journey took two days, for a total of twenty-tree hours. But my daughter, Cocoa Bean the Baseball Mom, planned it like a day trip to a practice or a game, as though it were four hours total, there and back. In other words, she packed one bag of chips and two bottles of water. I guess the second bottle was for her mother, Grammy.

We were two hours north of home when I discovered this. Naturally I stopped for more supplies. I was the driver.

For future reference, here’s a list of provisions everyone should bring on a long trip: A cooler with sticks of cheese and sausage, bottles of water and cans of tea; a box of Triscuits and a big bag of Corn Nuts; a roll of paper towels, a box of sneezing tissue, and a package of sanitary wipes; flashlights, umbrellas, and lots of real maps; Lysol for gas station bathrooms and motel showers; sleeping bags with inflatable mattresses to keep from sleeping on motel beds; medical kit with bandages and ointments, and an accident kit with flares and reflective triangles; and for the overall traumatically tedious trip, bring books on CD. Also, you might want to designate one person as navigator. Otherwise, at a critical turn, you’ll have two people telling you conflicting information based on their phones’ GPS. In fact, I recommend taking the other person’s phone away until you arrive at your destination. That slapstick happened to me several times, there and back, and my left hand still cramps from all the panicked gripping of the steering wheel.

We travelled halfway across the continent to attend my grandson’s graduation from Air Force basic. Oh, there were maddening stretches of time, waiting for the last run of physical training, and then waiting for the coin ceremony.

(Put emergency cushions on the list of supplies for any future attendance of a similar kind.) But it was all worth it. Grammy was red-eyed with tears, and I was choking with pride, but mainly I got goosebumps when Maestro was

I don’t often get goosebumps, but I had killer goosebumps then, prickling up my arms and down my legs, and even the back of my neck, where I never prickle.

The day after we got home, I looked at pictures his mother sent me, and when I came across the one of him receiving his coin, I broke out in goosebumps again, and because I was back in Grammy’s chilly 72 degree AC and so already goosebumpily, I almost caught a cold from it.

This week is the oneyear anniversary of my grandson joining the Air Force. It’s not a big deal now, I know.

But still I celebrate it in my own way, with reminiscent similarities, and a sports cream that helps the cramps in my left hand.

The “White racist” concept is a “dog whistle” to arouse hate, which will lead to bedlam. All decent citizens must fight it. Standing up for free speech is the antidote for a brutal small elite coup of the freest country on earth.

The more we venture out of our comfort zone and look around in this great big world, the more we will run into people that are hurting. Yes, many of us are blessed and some of us have led sheltered lives, but if we desire to become more sensitive to those around us we will notice there are individuals that have not had it so easy.

There are so many places to serve and so much desperate need that sometimes it seems overwhelming.

As a community chaplain, I am surrounded by disturbing situations and within my personal writing and music ministry, I am constantly being approached by those in this country and around the world who are crying out for financial assistance. Like you, I have concern and want to help everyone, but there is only so much we can do.

It’s our responsibility to pray for everyone, but also critical that we listen to God’s response and react according to His directions. When we turn away from considering the burden of human suffering, this coldness turns our prayers into a private bless me confession and reduces the big picture of the world’s needs into a tiny peep-hole that is easier to ignore. I realize it’s more comfortable to live in denial, and only focus on our desires, but is this truly following Christ? We read about selfless individuals like Mother Teresa that abandoned her life so that she could help others, and we recognize she not only had a compassionate heart but was actually willing to sacrifice her plans in obedience to God’s voice.

With God’s perspective, it’s not how many good deeds, how much money we give, or how much a person accomplishes, but it’s all about us knowing what He is saying and then being obedient to His instructions. In Mark 12:43-44, we read the account of the poor widow that contributed two cents into the church offering while some of the wealthy members were donating large amounts of money.

Jesus was watching and made a very interesting comment, “And He called unto Him His disciples, and saith unto them, Verily I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast more in than all they which have cast into the treasury: for all they did cast in of their abundance; but she of her want did cast in ALL that she had, even all her living.” The old saying, “things are not always as they seem” comes around on a regular basis and when we are sensitive to recognize what is happening, we can begin to understand the deeper meanings of life. The widow realized that her two cents were not a significant amount but instead of being discouraged or embarrassed she stepped forward in faith because she heard God’s voice and was expressing her love and worship to Him as an act of obedience. This is an example of why we are encouraged to develop our spiritual awareness so that we can be equipped to comprehend God’s divine reality. In Isaiah 55:8-9, the Lord is gracious to explain, “For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.”

When it comes to our ideas about giving, it’s important to realize that God is not always impressed with what we think. Our old nature has a strong and stubborn desire to be in total control and this even includes our labors and contributions associated with His work.

We must guard against the temptation to decide what we should do without first consulting the one for whom we are doing it. To Him, it’s simply about us listening for Him speak and being willing to do what He says. In this lifestyle, we can appreciate His grace and wisdom and know that He will receive all the glory. We can also be assured that if God is leading us there is no such thing as a prayer that is not important or a compassionate gesture that is insignificant. Learning and accepting that God desires to be in control of everything in our life is a difficult lesson. His way is for us to surrender our ideas, opinions, and justifications so that we can humbly submit to His perfect instructions and walk in His Spirit.

from page 1 cratically elected bicameral legislative body, little — if anything — is said about the ugliness of the political campaigns that quickly followed the creation of the new nation.

The form of government that was adopted was familiar to James Madison, chief architect of the Constitution which spells out how the new government was to be organized and operate. It was the system used in the Presbyterian Church, a descendent of the church of the Pilgrims and the one in which Madison was a leader.

But by the time of the presidential campaign of 1796, the spirit of the event seemed far removed from the church. One of the most honored of the founders, candidate Thomas Jefferson, was called “a mean-spirited, low lived fellow, the son of a half-breed Indian squaw, sired by a Virginia Mulatto father.”

Even those remarks were mild compared to those in the campaign of 1828 when Gen. Andrew Jackson was described as a cannibal who, after killing 500 Indians, ordered one of his men “to dress a dozen of the Indian bodies for his breakfast, which he devoured without leaving even a fragment.”

Still, the key to our system of government are the laws passed by that legislature modeled from earlier church experience and the underlying structure embodied in the Constitution whose birth was hailed in this manner by Thomas Paine, one of the leaders of the Revolution: “…let it be brought forth, placed on the divine law, the Word of God; let a crown be placed there on, by which the world may

If “the divine law, The Word of God,” is king in the United States today (or if it ever really was), it certainly has not been evident in many political campaigns even in the “sophisticated” modern era.

Not, for example, in the gruesome 1964 “Daisy Girl” television commercial which implied that the election of Republican candidate Barry Goldwater would result immediately in a graphically depicted Russian nuclear bomb dropping on a little American girl in a field picking flowers.

Many of the founders foresaw what John Adams, the voice of reason throughout the nation’s birthing process, expressed when he wrote: “Our Constitution is designed only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate for any other.”

But the staid and devout statesman, only the second man to lead the new country, was realistic enough about politics to be quoted as making this observation: “In my many years, I have come to a conclusion that one useless man is a shame, two is a law firm and three or more is a congress.”

Perhaps it is the cruel and dirty path a candidate seems forced to take to get there and the abuse which often follows that prompted Adams to say that, “No man who ever held the office of president would congratulate a friend on obtaining it.”

training, resume writing and job interview preparation, among others. Links to other organizations that support veterans and involving family members in the healing process of PTSD are also provided.

Groups are kept small, up to six but can be one on one. The program is free and open to all veterans in Hernando County.

Funding to run the program is provided by local businesses and individuals through donations and fundraisers such as an upcoming golf tournament at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club and a Pasta Fest at Papa Joe’s in November.

Guadagnino said our community should be proud to support the men and women who put their lives on the line to keep us safe and if everyone would donate one third of one paycheck before Veterans Day, the program would be funded indefinitely.

Operating since last October, the Veterans Heat Factory has had several successes and the future looks promising. Veterans also help at the Heat Factory, such as volunteer Dale Madrishin, a Vietnam vet who also once suffered from PTSD. Guadagnino hopes to raise awareness of the needs of the military community and to provide a program that can be copied nationwide.

Oak Hill Hospital volunteer association awards scholarships Oak Hill Hospital is proud to announce that a total of 24 scholarships of $1,000 each were awarded to graduating seniors by the Oak Hill Hospital Volunteer Association.

The $24,000 in scholarships were awarded to the following students:

The criteria for awarding the scholarships is based upon each student’s GPA, family income and dependents. The funds are received from revenue generated at the hospital’s volunteer gift shop and other fundraisers.

Scholarships are awarded to graduating seniors entering the human healthcare field. The scholarships are to be used for tuition and books during the 2018-2019 school year.
