The Gulf Coast of Florida was a common hiding place for pirates. The pirates used the many inlets, bays, rivers and marshes as hideouts. The warships that hunted the pirates generally did not know the channels as well as the pirates, so when chased, the pirates would head to the coast. There they could disappear among the rivers and the marshes.

In Pasco, the town of Anclote, positioned on the north side of the mouth of the Anclote River, was said to be a pirate hangout. Maps show this location dating back to the 1500s. It was said to have good water from the Spanish Well which is in existence to this day. Ships often needed more water and 1728 Map by Geographer H. Moll showing Anclote, a popular spot for pirates.

The Hernando Sun places in FPA Weekly Newspaper Awards Congratulations to Hernando Sun Photographer Cheryl Clanton, who was awarded second place for her portfolio entry in the 2017 Florida Press Association Weekly newspaper awards.

The judges had the following comment on her entry, “Balance of pictures are solid and challenge the reader to change the outcome. Great job.” One of the noteable photos in her portfolio was taken during Firefighter/Paramedic Steven Terry’s funeral procession on 10-24-17. When we wrote an article about our entries earlier this year, this photo was featured. Steven Terry’s widow wasn’t aware that we covered the procession at the time and after re-running the photo she got in contact with us to obtain copies of the original article. She mentioned that the family

did not have many photos of that day and was grateful we had covered it.

We also placed second in the Best Reader Generated Photo category. Our entry was Bert Bodiford’s photo of his brother Ryan rescuing a calf (who they named Irma) from his flooded property in Brooksville after Hurricane Irma. The judges had the following comments on the photo: “The photographer managed to capture many elements to make the subject stand out.

The center, where the main topic is contained is surrounded by woods. The man walking through water, coupled with the name of the calf, let the reader know what is taking place. Well done.”

While it is nice to be recognized, our focus is really on serving our community rather than winning awards.

Joel Fritton currently serves as General Counsel to Sheriff Nienhuis and the Hernando County Sheriff’s Office.

He joined the Sheriff’s Office approximately six years ago. Prior to that, Joel served as an Assistant State Attorney, where he gained thousands of hours of courtroom experience in prosecuting thousands of cases, ranging from misdemeanors to murder. He also spent time practicing employment law and commercial civil litigation.

Joel is a lifelong Republican, public servant and community advocate. He is a member of the Rotary Club of Brooksville and an advisory board member for the Y.M.C.A of Hernando County, where his entire family is actively involved.

He received his undergraduate degree from the State University at Buffalo where he studied accounting and human resource management and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration.

Joel attended law school at the Florida Coastal School of Law where he earned his Juris Doctor degree.

Q & A WITH JOEL FRITTON What are the most important responsibilities of the Clerk of Court?

One of the Clerk’s most critical duties is to be the C.F.O. and watchdog for Hernando County public funds. As Comptroller and County auditor, one must act as a fiscal and independent check on local government. The position is responsible for paying the debts and maintaining the county’s “checkbook”.

The Clerk is also a vital part of the court system in keeping the court docket moving and in recording all lawful case documentation.

The Clerk is also the County’s official record keeper, ensuring that official records and documents are preserved.

The Clerk must have a command of records retention guidelines and confidentiality/exemption provisions that apply to public records.

Managing an office and staff, the Clerk must understand public employment law and legal issues unique to public sector employees in order to prevent exposing tax payers to liability.

I believe the current budget is sufficient and fiscally conservative. As a fiscal conservative, I would be against a carte blanche increase to the budget without identifying specific needs.

legislature to oversee the budget needs of the Clerks statewide. All of the fines, fees and forfeitures from the case system are sent to that entity and they provide us funds to operate the courts. Over the past 4 years, we have received cuts to that budget. Hernando is one of 12 counties that cost tax payers zero of their dollars to operate the courts functions.

Second, Official Records. This is funded by revenue taken in from recording of documents.

The fees are then used to operate those functions of the office and any leftover funds are to be returned to the BOCC. In general, we return $250,000.00 or more to the County General Fund.

Last, we have Financial Services, Audit Services, Clerk to Board, and some of our Information Technology department. This comes from the General Fund and consists of approximately 1% of the general fund tax revenue.

We provide a lot of service to the constituents without costing them in terms of taxes.

We are constantly facing budget cuts to keep taxes down. While I do not support taxes or fees being raised in any way, if we continue to receive unfunded mandates from above, we will need some other source of revenue.

Born in New York, I was raised on Long Island and received my Bachelor of Arts in Economics from the Stony Brook University, there also completing 15 graduate credits in Human Resource Administration.

I graduated magna cum laude and fifth in my evening class from Touro Law School with excellence honors in six subjects.

I am an experienced trial attorney and an over 20 year member of the Florida Bar. After graduating from college, I worked as an IRS tax examiner rigorously auditing large corporate employer tax accounts.

Before moving to Spring Hill, I worked as a Senior Claims Hearing Representative for the NY State Insurance Fund litigating highly complex workers’ compensation injury and occupational disease claims. For nearly 12 years, I identified and resolved claims fraud, employer misrepresentation, and medical treatment waste and excess, all while responsibly and equitably settling high-cost claims.

The Clerk’s current budget is $7,586,335 of which $6,030,000 (79.5%) is personnel costs, and is derived from three main sources: 1. Local funding from the BOCC. As our county continues to grow, this budget must

be pro-rata adjusted such that the Clerk’s office can efficiently and effectively fulfill its responsibilities as the county’s Chief Financial Officer and Clerk to the BOCC. 2. Court funding from the state of Florida from the collections of fines, fees, and court costs.

Despite growing demands, unfortunately there is a consistent statewide decline in funding for every Clerk’s court-related budget. As your Clerk, I will work with the clerks’ association and legislature to develop appropriate funding for these tasks mandated by the Florida Constitution.

3. Recording fees for deeds, mortgages, liens and other documents, and other charges for services.

Only a portion of these fees are retained to offset the cost of operating the Clerk’s office for these tasks. Since they are cyclical in nature, I will adjust the budget as necessary to efficiently and effectively service these customers.

What are the most important projects you would like to undertake in order to improve the Clerk of Court Office and its functions?

First, personnel training and personnel hiring/retention. The investment in the skills, knowledge, and hiring of qualified staff is the single most important dollar spent. Each employee must be trained to handle their duties professionally, accurately, legally, and with the utmost respect for our customers. Employee retention must be maximized through competitive wages and benefits.

Second, adopt new technology, and hours, for the 21st century customer.

Expanded online and call center services must be made available for those unable to visit in-person.

For our in-person customers, appointment scheduling, full-service kiosks and expanded hours will be available.

Third, for Court Services implement 24/7 document filing through the expanded use of artificial intelligence computing to streamline case management tasks.

LAZRI, GJYLE YOB: 1997 CHARGES: POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE, POSS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESSION OF OXYCODONE, POSS OF COCAINE, POSSESSION OF A CONTROLLED SUBSTANCE (3x), CARRYING CONCEALED FIREARM, POSS/SELL/DEL ALTERED FIREARM, FLEEING/ATT ELUDE POLICE OFFICER, RESIST/OBSTR OFFICER W/O VIOL, KNOWINGLY DRIVE WHILE LIC SUSPENDED/REVOKED Arrested at: 08/07/2018 04:57 COMMERCIAL WAY & MARENGO ST, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34613 Arrest Summary: On 08/07/2018, I attempted to conduct a traffic stop on a green mercury 4 door sedan bearing Florida tag JLIW41, in the area of Commercial Way and Glen Lakes Boulevard due to the vehicle swerving on the roadway and believing the driver may be ill, tired, or impaired. Once I activated my emergency lights on my marked patrol vehicle, the vehicle began to accelerate, crossing the median going in the northbound lanes; however, driving southbound at a high rate of speed. I left my emergency lights on while driving in the southbound lanes to observe the vehicle in the distance head southbound in the northbound lanes, due to my concerns for possible vehicles heading northbound, and for them to be warned with my emergency lights from the oncoming vehicle that fled.

Shortly after, the green Mer-

cury 4 door sedan, bearing Florida tag JLIW41, crashed in the area of Commercial Way and Marengo Street into a fence. As I pulled up to the crash I observed the defendant, later identified as Gjyle Lazri, exit through the front driver side door with a purse and attempt to run away. I verbally commanded the defendant to then get on the ground and place her hands over her head, in which she then dropped the purse approximately 10 feet away from the vehicle by some bushes, and then attempted to run again; however, hesitated and turned around to go back towards the vehicle to lay down with her hands over her head.

The defendant was then placed under arrest and read Miranda Warnings, in which she advised she did not want to speak with me.

A later search of the vehicle yielded negative results for anything illegal; however, a search of the purse that was in possession of the defendant before she dropped the purse revealed the following: An orange pill container which contained 12 white round pills printed “M4” of Hydromorphone 4mg weighing 1.9 grams and two and a half white 3 sided pill printed “Pd8” of Hydromorphone Dilaudid, 8mg weighing .3 grams.

A small plastic bag, which contained 8 yellow rectangular pills printed “T194” of Oxycodone Hydrochloride 10mg weighing 3.7 grams.

Small plastic bag which contained 6 blue round pills printed “R 180” of Alprazolam, 1mg weighing .8 grams.

A pink SCCY CPX-2 9mm handgun with altered/removed serial number which appears to be scratched off.

Four plastic baggies, which contained a white and brownish powder substance that field-tested positive for cocaine with a total weight with the baggies of 6.2 grams.

A plastic baggie, which contained a crystal like substance that field-tested positive for Methamphetamine with a total weight with the baggie of 2.0 grams.

An orange pill container which contained hard brownish substance wrapped in tin foil that field-tested positive for Heroin with a total weight with tin foil of 2.2 grams.

Let it be known, all pills were identified via drugs.com. and $149.87 in US currency was seized within the purse.

Later during my investigation it was revealed that the defendant did also have a suspended license with one prior guilty conviction on 08/07/2017 via Driver and Vehicle information Database “DAVID” and by the defendant spontaneously uttering, “I do not have a license”.

At this time, the defendant was then transported to the Hernando County Jail and was being verbally aggressive. The Defendant was scheduled a court date to appear in courtroom D of the Hernando County Courthouse on 09/04/2018 at 1315 hours.

The defendant was issued a total bond of $20,500.00.

After asking the defendant why his vehicle smelled like marijuana, the defendant then handed me a clear bag containing a green leafy substance, that was consistent with marijuana, to me. A search of his vehicle was then conducted and on the driver side floor a clear bag of a white substance was located, the white substance was consistent with Cocaine.

Using Narco test kit 7613 and 7608 the green leafy substance tested positive for Marijuana (THC) and the white substance tested positive for Cocaine.

The defendant was also the sole occupant of the vehicle.

Using OHAUS scale model no. C305-S / SN. 47871 the Marijuana weighed 1.6 grams without the clear bag and the Cocaine weighed .4 grams with the clear bag.

Post Miranda, the defendant denied having any knowledge of the Cocaine but stated that the Marijuana was his.

The defendant was arrested and transported to the Hernando County Jail. The defendant received a court date of 09/4/2018 at 1315 hours in Courtroom D. The defendant is being held on a $7,000 total bond.

Let it be known that the defendant was also charged with a Hernando County warrant under case number 201812879.

But, those drugs are most likely his ANDERSON, KENNETH WADE YOB: 1987 CHARGES: POSS OF METHAMPHETAMINE, POSSESS/ INTRO CNTRBND-JAIL Arrested at: 08/09/2018 01:30 16425 SPRING HILL DR, BROOKSVILLE, FL, 34604 Arrest Summary: On 08/09/2018, after being arrested under case number 201824813 for being in possession of methamphetamine, the defendant was turned over to jail staff at the Hernando County Detention Center, after being asked several times if had any items of contraband.

During a strip search, Detention Deputy Pl located two baggies concealed in the defendant’s groin area.

Deputy P turned said items over to me, one of which being a clear plastic baggie containing a clear crystal like substance weighing a total of 5.8 grams. Said substance was field tested, which revealed positive results for the presence of methamphetamine.

The other baggie being red in color, containing an unknown brown substance, which would not field test for any narcotics. At this time it is believed the baggie may contain Fentanyl, and will be sent to FDLE for testing.

The defendant advised Deputy P that the one baggie contained “meth”, however, he did not know what the other substance was.

The defendant is being held on a $10,000.00 total bond.

The defendant was given a court date of 09/04/2018 at 1315 hours in Courtroom D of the Hernando County Courthouse.

I then observed the same vehicle fail to stop at the steady red light at the intersection and continued eastbound onto Northcliffe Boulevard. Contact was then made with the driver and defendant Sarah Miranda. The defendant’s identity was confirmed via her Florida Driver’s License. After speaking with the defendant, she gave consent to a search of her vehicle. While searching the vehicle, I located a black in color “Pink” brand zippered bag to be hanging off of the back of the front passenger seat. The defendant also gave consent to search that bag.

Inside of that bag, I located another pink in color “Victoria’s Secret” bag, which was opened. Inside of that bag, I immediately located a small clear plastic baggie with a clear crystal like substance inside which appeared

consistent with Methamphetamine. The Methamphetamine was weighed using certified OHAUS Scout scale SPX621, serial number 8338457046, and weighed out to a total of 1.6 grams.

The defendant, along with the passenger in the vehicle, Richard P, were then detained.

Also inside of the pink in color bag I located a white in color “Aleve” brand pill bottle. Inside of that pill bottle, I located 5 orange in color capsule shaped pills with TEVA 3147 printed on them. A check of the drugs.com pill identifier was conducted which showed those pills to be Cephalexin monohydrate, which is available by prescription only. I also located 3 yellow in color round pills with U 220 imprinted on them. A check of the drugs. com pill identifier was conducted which showed those pills to be Montelukast sodium, which is available by prescription only. Also inside of that same bag, I located a see through orange prescription bottle with no prescription on it. Inside of that bottle, I located 16 brown and white capsule shaped pills with two logos and 665 printed on them. A check of the drugs.com pill identifier was conducted which showed those pills to be Gabapentin, which is available by prescription only. Also inside of the pink in color bag, I located a white in color “Equate” pill bottle. Inside of that bottle, I located 2 full green in color circular pills with TEVA 833 imprinted on them. There was also multiple broken pieces of the same pills inside of that bottle. A check of the drugs. com pill identifier was conducted which showed those pills to be Clonazepam, which is a controlled substance. Also located freely inside of the pink in color bag were 4 more full Clonazepam pills, as well as two more broken pieces.

Also located freely inside of the bag was 1 yellow in color round pill with CIPLA 159 imprinted on it. A check of the drugs.com pill identifier was conducted which showed that pill to be Meloxicam, which is available by prescription only. Also located inside of the black “Pink” bag were multiple small clear plastic baggies inside of a larger plastic bag.

Those baggies are commonly used for narcotics. I then located near the bags, a tan in color pouch which had inside $400 dollars in all 20 dollar bills. Also inside of the bag were 2 small scales, one black in color and one silver in color, which both had a white in color residue which appeared consistent with Methamphetamine.

Sanvenero praised the Taylor family, long-time residents and owners of the 440-acre tract for caring about the future of Spring Hill. “Spring Hill when the Deltona corporation started was a rural area. It’s an urban area… things change.”

Commissioner Jeff Holcomb reviewed the brief history of recent meetings regarding Spring Center, where it was discussed and found that the county cannot

legally prevent development of the area. An alternative to the 3600 dwelling units currently planned, could involve houses and buildings erected “piecemeal,” possibly resulting in more dwelling units and ultimately more traffic in the areas of concern.

The innermost “heart” of Spring Center will be the town-center, zoned for commercial and public services, and is expected to include retail, restaurants, coffee shops and grocery stores. It will also be zoned to allow veterinarian offices, doctor’s offices and clinics, and alcoholic beverage dispensation.

Public transit stops will also be available.

The center will be surrounded by multi-family housing, public parks and walking and bike trails, and surrounded by single-family homes at the perimeter. The single family homes will be adjacent to existing single family homes in the area.

New principal for Brooksville Elementary BROOKSVILLE – Mike Lastra has been selected as the new principal of Brooksville Elementary.

Currently, Lastra is in his 4th year as the assistant principal of Eastside Elementary. Lastra has lived in Hernando County since 1992 and is an alumnus of Central High School, Class

of 1998.

Community partnership key for new management at Springbrook Hospital

by JULIE B. MAGLIO HERNANDO SUN WRITER New leadership has arrived at Springbrook Hospital in Brooksville and that leadership is working to improve community relations and outreach as well as expand programs in order to provide valuable mental health resources to Hernando County.

In late March 2018, Jim Harris was brought on as Interim Hospital Administrator. Since that time Harris has made it a point to get involved in the various mental health committees within Hernando County made up of organizations such as Lutheran Services Florida, The Hernando County Sheriff’s Office and the Hernando County Community Anti-Drug Coalition.

“The bigger picture for Springbrook is that we are a member of this community and we want to become even more active in the community and support it with regard to its mental health and substance abuse needs. And there are plenty of those,” Harris remarked.

Daniel Coggins, former Nursing Home Executive Director was brought on board about three months ago and has made great strides in developing a mental health treatment program for older adults. He says that Springbrook’s community involvement is crucial “so that we can provide the resources to solve some of those mental health issues.”

“Dan has brought a lot of evidence based research, best practices to define the direction we’re going in and improve the service we provide,” remarked Harris.

Springbrook Hospital was established in Hernando County in 1990, but was originally called Greenbrier. Today, it is owned by Oglethorpe Inc., which was founded by Bob Cohen in 1999.

Oglethorpe’s mission is to “breathe new life into failed or failing psychiatric health centers, to restore their places in their neighborhoods.” Oglethorpe has over 1,200 employees, with offices and facilities in 4 states.

Springbrook is a 66 bed facility and one of two psychiatric hospitals in the county. They are the only psychiatric hospital in the county to handle Baker Acts following the end of BayCare’s program in January of 2012.

Baker Acts are one element of their general adult program which addresses primary mental health needs. All of their treatment programs are for adults.

They have three inpatient treatment units: the co-occurring disorder unit, the general adult unit which takes both

voluntary and involuntary patients and the older adult program which also has both voluntary and involuntary patients.

A co-occurring disorder involves both mental health and substance abuse.

“Co-occurring just means that two illnesses are inter-related essentially,” explained Harris.

He said that in the past, treatment programs would attempt to fix one problem before the other- depending on which was the more prominent issue. There is

a somewhat different approach now he explained.

“Really the direction that things have taken is an integrated approach. A good treatment program is capable of addressing both the mental health and the substance abuse simultaneously. Being flexible enough to manage what the priorities are for each patient, but being able to address both and help the client or patient understand that these are interwoven and it’s very difficult to separate out one from the other in reality.”

They also have a partial hospital program which is an outpatient level to high level of care outpatient program for both mental health and co-occurring disorders.

It’s located across the street from the main Springbrook facility.

The newest program is the older adult unit for adults over 60.

Harris explained, “The older adult program we are typically treating people who are more feeble, fragile and have associated illnesses. This would include dementia with behavior changes such as a flare up of a mental health issue that they’ve had for most of their lives.”

For example with someone who develops dementia and has had depression in their lifetime, Harris said in the early stages of dementia, the depression can come back or reemerge.

“We’ll help them deal with those issues as a whole,” said Harris.

Medical Director and Psychiatrist Dr. Leo Yason who has worked at Dr. Leo Yason, Springbrook Medical Director the hospital since and Psychiatrist 1992 explained that people with mental illness are living longer.

“The lifespan of patients with chronic psychiatric illness is longer. In the past people with schizophrenia- they die in their mid 50’s. Now because of improvements in psychotropic medication, they will live into their 70’s.”

With the additional stressors of aging, these mental issues become exacerbated.

Coggins said, “We wanted to design a program that wrapped our arms around the patient, from the time they get up in the morning until they go to sleep at night- we wanted to design a structured program -being surrounded by nursing groups that talk about health, talk about wellness- medications and the compliance of medications, the aging process, the importance of hydration...”

The unit can treat up to 30 patients.

Patients come from independent living, assisted living as well as skilled nursing facilities. The program is designed as a 14-day rotation, but they do have patients that stay longer, depending on need.

Lake Louisa: So close, beautiful

Each month, my husband and I visit one of the many great Florida State Parks. July took us to Lake Louisa State Park, 7 miles south of Clermont on Hwy 27.

It’s a beautiful park and well worth the stop whether you are interested in camping or just a nature lover out for a day trip. The park’s rolling hills border the northeast edge of the Green Swamp and the parkland takes in some 4,500 acres.

There are 6 lakes and over 23 miles of trails.

Lake Louisa is the largest in a chain of some 13 lakes in the Clermont and Groveland area. It forms the northern park boundary. Full facility campgrounds are located in the center of the park near two of the smaller lakes called Dixie and Hammond.

From the campsite, it’s an easy walk to go fishing, watch wildlife or snap a sunrise or sunset photo.

Twenty modern cabins are available for rent along Dixie Lake. They

have porches with lake views and can sleep up to 6 people. All the full facility campsites and the cabins can be reserved up to 11 months in advance by going online to reserveamerica.com.

In Lake Louisa State Park there are additional primitive campsites, equestrian camps, guided horseback rides and 16 miles of horse trails.

I spent most mornings hiking the trails. With so many miles to choose from I could pick a different route every day.

The hiking trails, mostly grassy paths, are fairly well maintained. They connect for miles. It’s very easy to plan a short outing and loop back to your starting point. I was surprised how well marked the trails were.

My curiosity was up after seeing small engraved plaques on the trail posts. Each plaque listed the name of Riley Cowell, an Eagle Scout. Riley was just 15 and a sophomore when he came up with the idea to replace the trail markers here at Lake Louisa. He took on this work for his Eagle Project.

The Monarch Butterfly needs your help! The monarch butterfly or Danaus plexippus is without a doubt one of the most popular and best known of the Lepidopterans. Monarchs are popular in modern society. Their image can be found on stationary, birthday cards, mugs, Halloween costumes and even used for weddings.

Unfortunately, the native habitat of this iconic butterfly is disappearing. In fact, this species is starting to decline at an alarming rate due to loss of habitat, pesticides and other factors. In 2002, a severe winter killed over 80 percent of the overwintering colony in Sierra Chincua, Mexico. The monarch is not listed as endangered, but in August 2014 the Xerces Society, Center for Biological Diversity, Center of Food Safety and Dr. Lincoln Brower petitioned the Secretary of the Interior to place the status of the

monarch as “threatened.”

The Monarch butterfly is found throughout the United States, from California to South Dakota and here in Florida. Monarchs are beneficial pollinators.

The valuable nectar from native wildflowers and other suitable plants provide the fuel source for its biggest challenge, which is the great monarch migration. The monarch migration is beyond epic.

Most of the monarchs migrate to specific destinations in Mexico. Millions of monarchs make this perilous journey across the border to escape the freezing weather. Some who witness this migration say that there are so many butterflies you can actually hear the wings of the Monarchs in flight. Monarchs look fragile, but are very strong fliers. Monarchs can remain in flight for 11 hours straight and can travel a continuous distance of over 600 miles.

To sustain their population, monarchs must mate and reproduce. The host plants of choice belong in the milkweed family.

He started the project after hearing complaints about the conditions of the 10-year-old markers. Many had missing numbers and hikers were getting lost or confused.

Each new post now has a number and arrows leading to the next marker(s) on the trail. All correspond to numbers on a park trail map. Small plaques on most posts have a sponsors name, Riley’s name, and the month and year, September 2015.

Riley started a Go Fund Me page, requested sponsors for each post, and raised over $2,000. In all 60 new marker posts were put up and numbered. Forty people spent

a total of 400 hours over a long weekend getting them in place. Riley’s own time on the Eagle Scout project involved over 600 hours. Now 3 years later I certainly appreciated and benefited from all his hard work!

We enjoyed a combination of biking and hiking.

If biking is your thing,then there are miles of paved roads. Just a ride from the full facility campground to the parking lot and picnic area at Lake Louisa is over 3 miles one way.

Some parts of the pavement have a shoulder bike lane. If you didn’t bring a bike, one can be rented.

plies along with rentals for bikes. kayaks, and canoes. If you’re a bird lover, there’s plenty of them around too as well as opportunities to see herons, ducks, red shouldered hawks, swallow tail kites, turkeys, and small birds like cardinals and bobwhite. Whitetail deer, alligators, racoons, and gopher tortoises are also in the park. Fishing is popular for small and largemouth bass.

There are piers at Hammond and Dixie Lakes just a short walk from the campsites and Lake Louisa has a swimming area and picnic pavilions.

The land for Lake Louisa was purchased

as butterfly milkweed (Asclepias tuberosa), white swamp milkweed (Asclepias perennis), Pink swamp milkweed (Asclepias incarnata) and the rare pinewoods milkweed (Asclepias humistrata) are all used by monarchs and their cousin, the queen butterfly. Monarchs lay eggs on these plants and in a short time these eggs hatch into caterpillars.

The caterpillars will eat the leaves and when it is time, they will then pupate into a chrysalis. Once this stage is complete, the magical metamorphosis into an adult begins. Once the adult or imago hatches, the monarch stretches its wings in the morning sun.

Once its wings are dry, it takes flight and the circle of life begins again.

What can you do to help the Monarchs? Purchase native milkweeds and introduce them into your landscape. Flowering plants such as pentas, blanket flower, salvias, dune sunflower, plumbago, coreopsis and native wildflowers will supply the nectar for the adults.

Protecting our Monarchs

No wonder her four grandkids think she is the sweetest grandmother ever.

Her signature “Heavenly Hot Fudge Sauce,” which she has been making for 20 years, is now affectionately renamed “Mormor’s Hot Fudge” (“mormor” is Swedish for “grandmother”).

Much of the land still looks as it did 100 years ago. John and Louise Driggers Hammond settled the area around Lake Louisa in 1910.

Their homestead was much like a small town with a family house, turpentine still, shingle mill, sawmill, commissary, and combination church and school. For a time logs and other supplies were hauled by barge or steamboat across Lake Louisa to the sawmill. The present day swimming area was the site of a narrow gauge railroad. John and Louise had four children. John Hammond died in 1912.

Louise Hammond died in 1972 at the age of 87 or 88 (her birth month uncertain) and is buried in the Winter Garden Cemetery.

In 1943, the Bronson family bought some of the land and used it for orange groves and a cattle ranch. There are still remnants of pasture land and their orange groves in the park today.

In 2001, there was a historic discovery. A severe drought that year caused extremely low lake levels and kayakers spotted the wreckage of a P-51 Mustang in Lake Louisa. An article concerning the discovery ran in the Orlando Sentinel.

There’s a bit of finance that goes into the mix, too. “We shop together and figure out how much each jar should sell for to cover costs, with enough left over to give to a nonprofit project. We have fun learning and cooking together. It’s really more about the relationship-building with my granddaughter than the fudge sauce,” she says.

Here’s the recipe to make 1 quart of hot fudge sauce with steps to involve school-age kids.

HOT FUDGE SAUCE 4 ounces unsweetened baking chocolate bar (in the baking section of your market) 1/2 cup unsalted butter 3 cups sugar 1/4 teaspoon salt 1 12-fluid-ounce can evaporated milk 1 teaspoon vanilla 1. Let kids break up chocolate and place in the top of a double boiler with the butter. Stir until melted together.

Add salt.

2. Stir in sugar gradually, making sure it is completely blended before making another addition. Mixture will become very thick and dry.

Stir in evaporated milk, a little at a time. (Shake the can well before adding.) Continue to cook about 10 minutes to blend the flavors and dissolve the sugar.

3. An adult should remove from the heat and set on a trivet. Add vanilla and stir. Serve warm over ice cream.

TIP: To store in containers: Pour into a quart-size measuring cup with spout and pour into storage containers such as Mason jars. She completed her residency at the University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital and earned her medical degree from the renowned Temple University in Philadelphia. Her most recent publication, “An Attitude of Gratitude” in the OB Exchange was published on November 3, 2016.

If you have ever struggled with fertility issues, suffered a miscarriage, or worry you are unable to conceive or carry a pregnancy to term, you are invited to the support group. Everyone is here to listen, talk through and help with the healing process. Dr. Wagman personally suffered two miscarriages prior to having a son of her own.

Happy times are here again; it’s the start of Florida’s Statewide Alligator Harvest. Hopefully all of the hunters and guides are having a bit better success with their boats than I am. While scouting for the upcoming season I’ve had mechanical issues plaguing me and giving me no end of worry. But it’s nothing which I can’t overcome; it may be a bit of a shaky start, but I’ve promised myself and my clients that this season will be one to remember.

Now, I understand that not everyone appreciates the thrill of the hunt, but my goodness, the fruits of the labor are so very worth it!

Of course, I’m talking about the meat. Alligator meat is regarded as pretty fancy dining throughout most of America, mostly because in the north, midwest and western states, there are no gators.

It’s all just further proof that we Southerners are truly blessed. Here are five thing that you need to know about Florida’s alligator season to sort of explain what we’re doing and how we’re doing it.

1. You can’t bait any hook! Using a baited hook is pretty indiscrim-

inate. Nobody wants to waste a tag on a little gator and once he swallows the hook, there is no catch and release. However, baiting a line without a hook is still useful. You can do this legally with a long, heavy line with a wire leader and a 2” wooden peg. The idea is that the alligator will swallow the bait and peg, which will lodge inside the gator allowing the hunter to pull the gator boat-side. Also, if the gator escapes, the wooden peg will not injure the gator unlike a steel hook.

Just remember, the end of this line must be attached to a fishing rod or hand held. It cannot be left tied to a tree limb the way you see it done on television.

2. No guns allowed!

You must attach a line to the gator to bring it to the shore or boatside.

There are a few options for doing this; typically hunters use a harpoon, bow or crossbow shot to attach a line to the gator.

I prefer snatch hooks on the end of a Saltwater fishing combo to get my lines attached. Yes, lines, plural, A big gator is not at all easy to work in close and as soon as possible I want a second line attached to him to better keep his movements under control.

To end the fight, and a wild and frenzied fight it can become, we use a bangstick. A bangstick is a four or five foot pole that has a power head at the end of it, into which you insert a pistol cartridge to safely “shoot” the gator underwater. A short and sharp thrust to the back of the head and it is the best legal and humane way to kill the gator.

the tools of the hunt. A wide beamed, high-powered light is your best friend once the sun goes down and cordless is best. There will be a ot of lines and ropes and people moving around; cordless will prevent any tangling or tripping.

4. Don’t go off the map! Earlier in the year, each applicant will submit to enter the lottery for tags. If the applicant is selected, he or she will be awarded one permit with two tags for a specified location. There is no guarantee that you get drawn.

Just learn the area and know your boundaries.

Many of the hunt areas are designated as hunt units with specifically identified borders; cross them and the Game Officer will surely take exception to that.

5. Always put safety first! A lot can go wrong on the water at night while you are chasing an alpha-predator that could

be upwards of 15 feet long with a mouth full of huge teeth. Cell phone service is not always a guarantee and you could be many miles from the nearest boat ramp. So remember to be highly aware of the potential for serious injury. Flotation devices should be aboard, that goes without saying, as they’re required by law. Also, you will need reliable lights and lighting systems to navigate safely in the dark and a wellstocked first aid kit including pressure bandages, tourniquet and foil blanket. Always hope for the best, but with these powerful predators, you must be prepared for the worst.

Do your homework and go with a buddy that has some experience and already has the proper gear.

After long hours in the weight-room and competing in 7-on-7 passing leagues throughout the summer months, finally teams around the state of Florida can get ready for preseason play. That includes several of the teams within Hernando County, as Central, Nature Coast, Springstead and Weeki Wachee will all take the field this week. Hernando was the only county club that didn’t schedule a preseason matchup. The Leopards begin the regular season next week when they face Fivay. We take a look at the four preseason matchups featuring Hernando County teams.

Hudson at Springstead: The Cobras didn’t play so well in the spring against Central, whom defeated Hudson in a low scoring affair. Now enter Springstead into the fray and the Eagles are hungry and have something to prove, according to coach Mike Garofano. Coming off a 7-3 campaign that was more

than worthy of being a playoff-eligible team, the Eagles are going to try and put on a show for the home faithful.

Clearwater Superior Collegiate Academy at Nature Coast Technical: In one of the most interesting preseason matchups in all of the Tampa Bay area, the Sharks welcome in BJ Hall’s group to the ‘Shark Tank’ and return a backfield that could compare to mostly anyone’s. The Sharks will look to showcase the backfield tandem of quarterback Fabian Burnett and running back Mike Weston. mystery of the plane was solved. A faded thank-you note from a Minneola woman provided a missing piece of the puzzle about the crash. The P-51 Mustang was flown by a young pilot First Lt. Dean Gilmore in November 1944. He had taken off from Bartow on a training mission and crashed, nose diving into the lake, then bouncing and exploding.

He was flying low toward a setting sun. His body was recovered under a partially deployed parachute but the plane was lost in the lake. Gilmore was cleared of pilot error, but no one knows exactly what happened that day.

He had flown 91 reconnaissance missions during WWII and had been awarded the Dis-

tinguished Flying Cross.

Now just one day after his 23rd birthday he lost his life while training new pilots in Florida. A monument by the lake marks the discovery of his plane. During that same time period some Indian dugout canoes were found as well as arrowheads, spear points, ancient tools, and pottery.

Lake Louisa is quiet but close to a fast growing area of subdivisions and other private RV parks.

Hwy 27 is busy place with strip shopping centers, restaurants, and plenty of gas stations. Clermont is just a few miles north with a cute downtown and some antique shops, restaurants, and gift shops.

There is a nice waterfront park in Clermont on Lake Minneola where there are walking/ biking paths, picnic tables, benches,

a small beach, and a kid’s playground, plus a water splash area. Lake Minneola has a small fishing pier and offers great sunset views.

We’ve booked another week at Lake Louisa in December and look forward to more time in this area with just a little less heat.

Dr. Yason remarked at the Older Adult Unit’s recent open house, “I’ve experienced the changes and transformations of this hospital. At least for the past couple of years, I’ve really seen very positive, very good changes and improvements.

One of the positive changes is the older adult unit.”

In coordination with county-wide mental healthcare groups, Springbrook is currently exploring their options for a child-adolescent treatment unit. While Springbrook does not have a treatment program for children at this time, they do receive Baker Acted minors. Developing Springbrook has a large gym and activities space, complete with a basketball hoop, a treatment unit for children would allefoos ball table and artwork on the walls (below) viate the need to send these children to treatment centers outside of the county.

Harris notes that when these minors are sent out of the county, the ‘continuum of care’ they recieve and outcome success is jeopardized.

“Currently when we send a kid out, that kid can go anywhere- Tampa, Manatee, Miami- it all depends on where there is a bed. Unfortunately there are not that many beds around. So that child can end up a long ways away. What does that mean? That means the parents aren’t going to be involved in their child’s treatment because we don’t ship the parents down there with them… They’re in the hospital for three days to make sure that they’re no longer ready to kill somebody or themselves or do dramatic damage to

this source was close to shore. Sailing up a river was usually not an option, so the pirate would have had to row up the river to find a spring or other source of freshwater.

The golden age of piracy in the Gulf of Mexico was from 16501730. There were ships filled with treasures from the Americas, because of disagreements between the powers in the new world, there was no single authority. Some scholars estimate that nearly 5,000 pirates sailed the Florida Straits and the Gulf Coast between 1715 and 1726. Piracy returned on a smaller scale in the late 1700s and early 1800s, because of the unrest between the French, English and the United States.

During this time there was even a pirate/privateer stronghold named Barataria near New Orleans. Captured goods could be sold by pirates/ privateers in Barataria and then smuggled to New Orleans and sold in shops. The town was run

by Jean and Pierre Lafitte.

Pirates often needed remote places to stash their loot. The rivers and marshland of Hernando County would have provided ample opportunities to hide treasure or just hide out. There would have been little record of any pirates in the area, since the first settlers only arrived in the 1830s.

Another thing about pirates is that much of the perceptions we have about them is wrong. For starters, many of them were privateers, so they were working for their country.

Although, the road from privateer to pirate was slippery. Pirates did not say things like “Yo ho ho and a bottle of rum.” They did however probably use ‘arr’ as that was a popular term for ‘yes’ in the West Country of England where many pirates and privateers hailed from including Blackbeard and Sir Francis Drake.

Piracy declined because of the end of hostilities between the European powers. The privateers lost their commissions which allowed them to seize enemy merchant ships. They had to retire or become pirates. The navies and bounty hunters were quickly able to curtail the piracy once they were no longer fighting each other.

Formal apology to Twiggy the Waterskiing Squirrel

Occasionally, one comes in that sparks the imagination...

The Hernando Sun would like to issue a formal apology to Twiggy the waterskiing squirrel.

In retrospect it was a poor staffing choice to send our two orange cat reporters

William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer to interview Twiggy. The two yellow journalists, lost their journalistic integrity and became part of the story. (I guess that comes with the territory when dealing with yellow journalists.) In the past we have always allowed reporters to choose the stories that they cover, so when the Twiggy press release came across my desk, they were the first to volunteer. It was shortly after our newspaper went

The interview apparently started off with Twiggy losing her normal poise.

From there it turned into a hostile interview where Twiggy was on the receiving end of an unpleasant exchange. Thankfully Twiggy’s trainer intervened saving her from the distressful situation.

Our liability insurance has informed us that they will not cover Twiggy’s veterinary bill, so we are starting a go fund me page to help her out. There was apparently a clause added after William Randolph Hearst and Joseph Pulitzer interviewed the star of Steamboat Willie.

Twiggy is expected to make a full recovery in time for her final performances before retirement for reasons undisclosed. You can see her final performance at the 2018 Fall Orlando Boat Show on Aug. 18 and 19 at the Orange County Convention Center.

While the events involving the yellow journalists and Twiggy are imaginary, Twiggy is a real waterskiing squirrel and she actually is performing at the Orlando Boat Show this weekend in her final show.

Timber Pines resident warns of coyotes

Mary Lu Young and family is saddedned by the loss of their cat ‘Mama.‘ The circumstance of the cat’s death, involves coyotes and Young wishes to make residents aware of the danger. Comfort Keepers, a Homehealth Care Agency providing nonmedical care in Citrus and Hernando counties, has signed on as a Pacesetter Sponsor for Citrus County Walk Aware for Alzheimer’s with a donation of $500 to the Alzheimer’s Family Organization. The Walk, which raised $24,000 for the AFO last year, will take place again in Floral City on October 20, 2018.

Gailen Spinka, Owner/Manager of Comfort Keepers, states, “For someone with dementia, our service can provide either much needed relief for family caregivers, or we can provide the care necessary for the person to live independently and as comfortably as possible in their homes. In this way, we have a kinship with the Alzheimer’s Family Organization which dedicates its resources to home caregivers, and we are proud to support their work.”

There were various activities held on the school property including crafts, face painting, carnival games, Tiger nail salon and more. The staff were also generous enough to provide visitors with free hot dogs, chips, and cookies.

If any attendees were still hungry, one of the school’s business partners, Brain Freeze Italian Ice, was available as an extra option. Another partner of Westside for the celebration was The Boys and Girls Club of Hernando County. The big event

Success is worthy of celebration. Our own Westside Elementary School decided to celebrate a colossal victory last weekend and opened that celebration to the public. There could not have been a better Friday evening spent, especially for the students, faculty, and parents of the school.

On Aug. 10, they all gathered together to celebrate earning an “A” grade from the FDOE (Florida Department of Education).

was planned by a school committee and sponsored by the Westside’s PTO. Westside’s celebration was all due to the fact that their school rose from a drastically low F/D average in 2013-2014 and skyrocketed to an ‘A’ school average during the 2017-2018 year. This event was encouraging to the students and their families and was a way to reward everyone for their hard work before the school year officially began.

“Westside has been dedicated to delivering engaging standards-based lessons to students in K-5, but more importantly, the teachers and staff have high expectations for the students. The students have risen to the challenge and are meeting these expectations. The teachers have worked to build strong connections with their students and the students know their teachers believe in them, which has made a big difference,” stated Kristina Stratton, the principal for Westside Elementary School since 2014.

During the month of June, Westside staff rode in a school bus to surprise every student in Grades 3-5 who received a level 5 on the Florida Standards Assessment in English Language Arts, Math, and Science, at their home.

They rewarded the diligent students a T-shirt with the words “I was Focused and Fierce and Scored a 5 on the FSA,” along with a poster for their door.

theme last year was “Focused and Fierce” and this year, because they were focused and fierce, they are now “ ‘A’lways Fierce” (theme for 20182019 school year).

The “A” Celebration was as much as a success as the “A” the school diligently worked for.

At its August meeting, the Weeki Wachee Anglers, a family-oriented fishing and social club, recognized Bob DeBatt as the Angler of the Month for July. He caught a 39” Cobia on July 27th while fishing 36 miles out of Bayport due west. The cobia was caught on a live pinfish in 60 feet of water. Live Oak Theatre Open Auditions for 2018-2019 Season Live Oak Theatre announces that open auditions for its 2018-2019 season will be held on Tuesday and Thursday, August 21 & 23, from 5 pm until 8 pm at its new Center for the Performing Arts, 21030 Cortez Boulevard, Brooksville, FL 34601.

Auditions for all season productions will be held at that time. Those who audition should prepare 16 bars from a song that shows their strengths and vocal range. A less than two minute monologue will be welcome, but is not required. Cold readings will only be used for call backs.

Children, young adults and their parents who have no prior experience with Live Oak Theatre should have completed Live Oak Theatre’s orientation program. The program consists of two, one and a half hour classes held from 6:30 to 8 pm on August 14 and August 16. (Tuesday and Thursday) at the new center. Both sessions are required to audition.

The Tea Party needed a leader - he is here The indisputable fact is the Tea Party was a real organic movement. There was no calling from an official to make arrangements to meet in Washington, D.C. The only thing these American patriots wanted to show the nation was there are many Americans who love and believe whole-heartedly in the United States Constitutional republic. There were plenty of recognized diverse public figures from all over America but no one assumed the mantle of leader.

These major events first in Washington, D.C. and later in cities throughout the states were orderly, cohesive and very civilized affairs. Everyone who attended was respectful to others.

Amazingly everyone cleaned up so there was not a piece of trash left. The range of people was a cross section of America. There were entire families, individuals from all religions, ethic and racial groups. They all blended together, united by being proud and honored to be citizens of this extraordinary country. Most of them had never before been involved politically in any group.

The only ones who were disruptive or disrespectful to President Obama’s image came from the LaRouche Party. These members stuck out like sore thumbs. This fringe group that gave out hateful pamphlets, were ignored and shunned.

The Tea Party members felt a spiritual kinship with each other and understood they all desired the continuation of our exceptionalism not of a venue to vent their anger. This movement was peaceful and respectful to all the speakers and to each other.

These members knew a leader would emerge. He did in the 2016 presidential primary race. He appeared in the center of sixteen other candidates. Donald Trump was center stage. His toughness, sarcastic humor, cleverness and most importantly, the love of America made him clearly stand out as a leader. He picked up the essence of the Tea Party mantle aligning his pledges with them.

The enthusiasm and connection with hard working Americans was obvious. His campaign pledges are being kept one after another to the amazement of his supporters and the chagrin of his detractors and haters.

His communication to his audience is straight and clearly worded. President Trump’s explanations of why he did what he did, negotiating with other government leaders makes sense to his supporters. The progressive supporters found President Trump obnoxious and upsetting for the crude and insufficiently nuanced message for these supposedly sophisticated elites.

His courage to take on the entire progressive media has made him a folk hero to liberal conservatives and hated by globalists. He does not absorb the negative and often false narratives but rebuts them, unlike past republican presidents and other establishment republicans.

He speaks with his deeds and actions not with smooth, convoluted double talk that is not backed up with meaningful consequences.

President Trump’s progressive detractors call him every pejorative imaginable. He is supposedly a fascist, racist, mentally unstable, low energy, poorly educated and on the verge of full blown Alzheimer’s.

Although these claims are repeated continually, night and day by a chorus of progressive elites it has not resonated as his actions demonstrated how incorrect these claims are. He is practically everywhere giving unbelievable speeches with audiences in different states that are inspirational to them.

320 Bits an Hour

Years ago I started cutting my own hair. I bought barber shears and did it at home in the bathroom. I did so because it was getting too expensive, up from one buck to $1.25 on post and I didn’t like the crowds; it often took my entire lunch hour waiting for my turn.

I have, over the years, experimented with civilian barbers, but they were always too slow. A haircut shouldn’t take more than five minutes: buzz up the sides, buzz around the ears, and buzz the neck. If the barber decides to use lather and a straight razor around the neck and ears, which I never liked, then it could take ten minutes.

But no more than that!

Six years ago I took one of my grandsons, Spud, to his first haircut at a barbershop. I got a haircut too, and it took twenty minutes. Unbelievable!

He got a barber that used shears and was done in ten minutes, but I got some sort of stylist who used only scissors and kept wetting my head and combing my hair and snipping against a comb, snip, snip, snip. I didn’t go there for an experience; just cut my hair so I can go home!

And it was 10 bucks a pop! We never went back.

About a year ago I wound up taking that same grandson to his favorite barber, accompanied by my eldest grandson, Maestro. The place was ragtag,

reactions are often hilarious and priceless.

President Trump is a warrior leader directing the traditional Americans on how to remain positive in the face of subversive attacks by the imbedded elites in the shadow government. These agency heads are supposed to enforce the laws passed by our representatives, instead they are attempting to enforce their own beliefs. Instead of enforcing the law they are being lawbreakers.

By VINCENT CARDEGIN with sagging ceiling tiles, painted-over cracks in the walls, chipped and stained flooring, and the barbers wore tattered shorts and t-shirts. I was dismayed. I prefer my nearly half-century-old version of barbers clad in white smocks and ties and working in a shop that’s noticeably immaculate and its walls lined with infinity mirrors and haircuts done quick.

It took thirty minutes at Spud’s shop, and it cost twenty bucks! That’s 320 bits an hour! (I bet 19th century Barber/Dentist’s would have loved that!)

What’s a bit?

When I was young I remember seeing and hearing on TV a cartoonish song that sang “Shave and a haircut—two bits,” and a cheerleader-like chant of “Two bits, four bits, six bits, a dollar.” That was a thing even before the production of those shows, so the writers clearly grew up when such references were still being used.

The very first time I heard it was when my mother handed me a quarter and told me I could go get a haircut on my own. I think I was eight, and I rode my bike, and it was quite an adventure, the farthest away

(Things were different then—and we were living on a military installation, which made it even safer.) After my haircut, the barber said, “That’ll be two bits.” I didn’t know what he meant. I thought I was suppose give him two quarters, and I was in a panic. But no, he accepted the one just fine. One bit is 12.5 cents, and in the past that was a real unit of currency, and eighth of a dollar.

My final impression of that modern shop is that the customers, only four a day per chair (only two chairs) were high school friends, which explains the bro hug when the barber was done with his careful, slow-motion cutting of both hair and beard, trimming them into today’s elaborate version of style. And that’s fine, except that my grandson doesn’t shave, so why did it still take thirty minutes?

If I was that barber, I’d advertise and schedule at least four customers an hour. That’s 640 bits every time the minute-hand ticks to twelve. In an eight-hour day, how many bits and bucks would that be? Wow! Where’s the nearest barber school?

In the meantime, I insist that the old sing-song be revised to, “Shave and a haircut—160 bits.” It doesn’t have the same poetic meter, but it’s accurate.

The battle lines are drawn and the results of the mid-term election may put things in clearer focus. But America has a president that has the leadership ability “to drain the swamp” returning the government back to the forgotten people and make America once again the leader of the free world.

It’s no secret there are many different ideas about religion and spirituality. I’ve studied different religions and even within my own faith of Christianity I have discovered there are many conflicting opinions concerning what God wants us to be and how we are to live. At this time I will limit my views to the Christian faith because that is where I have spent more time in research and also declare my allegiance. I must add that I have not “arrived” at some type of wisdom plateau or to be considered a Bible scholar but instead have a long way to go in my spiritual understanding. In fact, it seems the more I learn the more I realize I do not know.

I was raised in a traditional Baptist church in the sixties and seventies.

As I began to study on my own, I realized there were many other creeds and ideologies in the religious world that at least deserved careful consideration. I’ve also discovered the more time we spend sincerely praying and researching the Bible, the more questions we have about what we have been taught. It’s true, that every denomination has different ideas and uses certain Bible passages to prove their points but with so many conflicting opinions we can see why there is so much division which also explains why God advises us to seek out our own salvation with fear and trembling. I’m not suggesting that we turn away from reading and listening to other peoples views but we have a personal responsibility to seek the Lord and search for divine truth on our own. “But the anointing which you have received of God abides in you, and you need not that any person teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things and is truth and not a lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall abide in Him” I John 2:27. Bible teachers can help us learn but it’s much easier to trust and even pay someone else to study and explain their views than it is to become a disciplined Bible student. Since we are referring to personal accountability, why would our private studies and prayers not be our highest priority?

It’s common knowledge that many ministers and teachers have certain areas they like to focus on. For example, similar to how we have primary physicians along with a wide array of medical specialist, we also have pastors and evangelist who regularly preach salvation messages, some are known for Bible prophecy and eschatology, while other members of the clergy have a reputation for instructing about faith, positive thinking, and prosperity, etc. Ministers should do what God is telling them to do, but I am also convinced that with each area of expertise there needs to be a more complete presentation within the context of the full gospel. There is something wrong when someone picks out all the passages about how God wants to make us wealthy but does not emphasize that it’s more important to demonstrate God’s character. Yes, we all want to eat chocolate cake and live a comfortable carefree life of blessings but this is not the foundation of our salvation nor the true meaning and purpose of life. We should be alarmed how the olive press, the threshing floor, and God’s refining fire which are critical components of the Christian faith, are being replaced with deceptive feel-good philosophies.

There is a divine order to the way God wants us to live and His desires must be first and foremost. Our highest goals after we are born-again is to know and obey God’s voice, to learn and receive His word, to yield our will, develop faith, love, and live holy. The Bible was not written to satisfy or justify our carnal flesh or to make us comfortable in our sins and neither are blessings given so that we might be absorbed in pleasures which distract us from knowing spiritual truth. The disciple’s mission is not easy or a popular subject because being crucified with Christ and taking up our cross is all about surrendering our will and allowing Jesus to be our Lord and to control our lives. The life-long commitment and responsibility of a Christian requires for the mind and conscience to be renewed into His image because unless we are changed from the inside out, Christ cannot be seen in us.
