FEDERAL CENTER LOCATION: CHICAGO FALL 2019-G3 STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: MOHAMMED SHARIF The project that is alive and responsive to the overwhelming conditions through the implementation of systems of cooling and heating when necessary. As a design, being conservative is important to the project by maintaining the beams, columns and mullions laid out by Mies van der Rohe. While acknowledging the significance of keeping the presence of Mies, the existing Federal Center is transformed into a machine that jitters, flutters, shudders, quakes and cools.

The most prominent system used to battle overwhelming heat, is the responsive faรงade.

The orientation of the buildings on the site is the driver behind the unique treatment of the south, east, west, and north facades. The most aggressive sun-shading treatment being on the south faรงade where large portions of the floor plates have been removed exposing the frame, and the panes of glass have retreated deep into the building. The north faรงade responds in a similar, but less aggressive fashion. The east and west facades also jitter, with the addition of fins that extend into the frame, preventing the penetration of sunlight when the sun is at its most extreme angle in the early morning and late evening.

On the upper floors, water is held in a large tank where is gravity fed through a series of pipes to the floors below. The pipes radiate cold in the summer months and heat in the winter months, forcing the harsh heat and bitter cold away from the structural skeleton.

02 MELTING POINT

HOTEL LOCATION: CINCINNATI FALL 2018-G2 STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: ERIK HERRMANN The focus of the design is on the relationship between rigid and deformed geometry. And how the rigid geometry is battling to resist any alterations while also allowing instances where the exterior collapses and merges on to the interior. The deformation is more apparent on the exterior as it slowly begins to influence the untouched rigid geometry nested at the center. The collapsing of the geometry create unique spaces for occupants as it isolates certain areas.

Public and private spaces are formed, the hotel being the private part nested in the poche. The hotel is surrounded by the public spaces such as: galleries, restaurants, and performance spaces. There are moments where the public spaces are exposed, however there are also moments where public spaces are more isolated, such as the cafe that is located below grade.

U.S. EMBASSY LOCATION: MEXICO CITY FALL 2017-SENIOR STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: KAREN LEWIS A wall’s naturally assigned function is to divide. The idea of a wall and how it works is an evolving purpose. When associated with politics, the idea of a wall can be viewed as having a negative purpose. The wall in the current political dialogue has been used to divide people and culture instead of spaces.

The embassy represents how different people must learn how to co-exist. The design of the embassy is directly addressing the dilemma of constructing the wall on the U.S-Mexico border.

The project consists of walls that collect people in large gathering spaces and dense office spaces. The idea is to encourage people occupying the embassy to collaborate and communicate.

Curvature

The rectilinear diagram of the wall indicates that the wall is designed using segments. While the curvilinear diagram of the wall illustrates that the wall is continuous.

Dematerialization/ Transparency

The solid wall illustrates that the wall is dividing people. However, the wall with glazing unites spaces and people.

On the sixth floor is where the Marines are located.

On the fifth floor, the staff utilize the open spaces for department meetings.

4th Floor

On the fourth floor, the sunken floor area is one of the main socialization spaces for the staff.

On the third floor, the staff utilize the large open spaces for announcements.

2nd Floor

On the second floor, the public mainly occupy the consular, visa section, and waiting room. The staff also use the collaborative spaces located on top of the offices.

On the first floor, the wall gathers the people in the gallery, cafeteria and the lobby.

04 SMART ARENA

X-GAMES ARENA LOCATION: COLUMBUS,OH SPRING 2017-JUNIOR STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: JOHN KELLEHER The X-Games arena’s landscape and the building were influenced by the various manipulations of a circle. The main two figures are the figure eight and the doughnut. The circular spaces on the landscape are where most of the outdoor extreme sport events are held.

The X-Games arena is designed for athletes during their off-season practice. The arena also serves as a rehabilitation center, if athletes are injured they would come to this arena to regain their fitness. The purpose was to design an exclusive arena that at times can be public. However, the site is open for the public during business hours for commercial purposes.

FARM ICONOGRAPHY

CULTURAL ARTS CENTER LOCATION: MILLERSBURG,OH FALL 2016-JUNIOR STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: STEPHEN TURK The project was to design a cultural arts center in an Amish community. Density of complex geometry was the driving force in the design. The form was influenced by farm iconographies such as: barns, silos, tractors, and windmills. These figures were merged to create unique spatial experiences.

The figure of the spaces is influenced by the program assigned to it. The kiln room for example, is much more expressive than the cafeteria. The idea is that each figure is supposed to evoke a certain feeling for the visitor. The theatre is massive but the offices are just a double loaded corridor of rectilinear spaces. The intention was to also design the landscape for programmatic usage, such as: outdoor cafeterias and amphitheaters.

The farm iconographies were also utilized to sculpt the landscape.

These formal studies illustrate the octree method, where cubes were re-arranged to create different complex spaces. These cubes were used to design the building and the landscape.

PROGRAMS IN SPACE

JESSE OWENS GYM LOCATION: COLUMBUS, OH FALL 2016-JUNIOR STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: GALO CANIZARES The Jesse Owens Gym is an agglomeration of programs coming together to be part of one system. The programs in the building have their own personality, each space is distinguishable from the exterior.

This is achieved by assigning each program a unique geometry as its shell. However, the idea of the project is to also make visitors on the exterior of the building feel like they are not isolated from the interior. The programs are elevated to create a canopy condition underneath. In the residual space a new type of space is created, it is a social and entry space. Within the canyon is where the visitors truly experience the sensation of canopy.

The project redefines the culture of a gym. A gym is usually designed to serve the egos of powerhouse athletes, and neglects students.

The gym has been designed to tend to the needs of the community. Instead of fitness being the focal point, it is also a place where students can study.

LIBRARY LOCATION: CLINTONVILLE SPRING 2019-G2 STUDIO INSTRUCTOR: BETH BLOESTEIN Inclusion, learning and growing. The multi-faceted community of Clintonville is represented through the tessalated facdes.

The project embraces the community with open floor plans that make spaces accessible to people from all walks of life. The approach to the design was to avoid extrution, instead creating an organic from that is responsive to the fast changing community. The bar is peeled up at the moments where edges align, also revealing a curtainwall that allows light to flood the spaces, increasing productivity of students.

The design of the skin is a response to the programmatic elements. Gradually, the skin is dematerialized and transformed from an opaque object into an object with facades that have areas of concentrated glazing distinguishing private spaces from the public.

Eastern Europe Study Abroad

Seven countries were visited: Denmark, Sweden, France, Germany, Austria, Czech Republic and Switzerland. The study abroad gave students an opporttunity to explore a variety of projects that were influential in their time, and have continued to play a major role in design through out the years.

Facilities Information and Technology Services (FITS)

As a BIM Assistant, floor plans have to be verified of existing buildings, through field verifications. The purpose of that is to check for renovations, then to build a Revit model of the building. After numerous audits the model is then stored in Ohio State University’s Archive.
