Lawyers slam student leaders’ arrest

By Tshepo Marutha Lawyers for Human Rights (LHR) havecondemned “the unreasonable and unlawful arrest” of seven Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) student leaders, describing the charges “as baseless and being targeted for their leadership role in the fight against student financial exclusion and fees increment.”

This after two of the suspended Student Representative Council (SRC) members and five other student leaders were arrested enroute to the “#Fees Must Fall” dialogue in Johannesburg. The seven were charged for public violence and contravening a court order.

IN A STATEMENT posted on Facebook the public interest litigation group LHR welcomed the withdrawal of chargesagainst the students by Soshanguve Magistrates Court. This after the student leaders spent the Human Rights long weekend in police custody.

“It became clear from the students’ testimony that the charges were baseless and that the arrests were arbitrarily targeting student leaders for the role they played in the protests against the financial exclusions and fees increments,”said LHR. In an interview with Sosh Times one of the arrested SRC members, Mr Hector Sinugu, who was responsible for Student Support Services (SSS) prior to his suspension, said their arrest was an attempt by the institution’s management to try and supress the voice of the poor of the poorest students.

“We believe the police were put under pressure by the university management to arrest us. When they came to arrest us, we were waiting for our transport inside a local tavern. They came in and said they wanted to search us because they have been informed one of us

was carrying a gun.

“We were surprised when they took out our official SRC pictures and handcuffed us, labelling us troublesome. This while they kept on threatening to keep us in for a very long time in custody until we reveal the whereabouts of other student leaders, who were not with us at the time of our arrest,” said Sinugu.

The suspended TUT Soshanguve campus Student Representative Council’s (SRC) Vice President Mr SthembisoShandu, who was not arrested at the time said they will not bow down to pressure until their demands were met.

“We are victimised simply because we decided not to be submissive to the iron fist style of institution’s leadership. We are harassed and intimidated simply because we refuse to sell out the demands of an African child. Ours is to see no student being denied the right to education .Ours is to see no student from TUT’s Soshanguve Campus dropping out because they cannot afford the ridiculous upfront money that is demanded by the capitalist orientated university,” said Shandu.

The university has been plunged by countless violent protest actions

for a number of years. In 2014, enraged students at its Soshanguve campus torched several university vehicles. The university was forced to postpone the 2015 final year examination indefinitely after the students torched the examination hall.

Speaking on behalf of LHR, Mr Mametlhe Sebepi, said the police conduct was unlawful; “Firstly we believe that there was no prima facie evidence for the police to effect the arrest. They simply relied on evidence that happened long time ago, at the time of their arrest there were no protest or illegal gathering and they were not at the vicinity of the campus.”

“We believe that their arrest is a malicious act aimed at suppressing the rights of the students to protest about their future. The police should not allow themselves to be abused by the university management,” said Sebepi.

The university has since the dawn of the “#fees must fall” movement been a hub of violent protest actions. In November, the university indefinitely suspended year end exams in both Soshanguve North and South campuses. The violent protest actions spilled into the New Year, with the university

again being forced to suspend all the academic activities in the first semester.

as she is on leave and there is no one to act on her behalf.

COMMENT

The lead story in this publication deals with the arrest of the Tshwane University of Technology (TUT) students who have been arrested on charges of public violence and contravening a court order. Lawyers for Human Rights slam their arrest as unreasonable and unlawful.

It described the charges as baseless and being targeted for their leadership role in the fight against student financial exclusion and fees increment.

There are gross allegations that the police connived with the TUT authorities to make these arrests possible. It is a pity we could not get comments from the police, even from the TUT management.

But it extremely disturbing to find that education is central to problems affecting society. While it was taken that what prompted the 1976 riots were that people were living in an oppressive Apartheid society where there was no access to some form of democratic communication to resolve problems, it is disappointing to have such a situation now. Nowadays we have student associations which are at liberty to take their grievances to authorities to seek out solution. But Alas!

The situation has gone from bad to worse. Some people suspect that there are white people who instigate as well as financially support the “#fees must fall” campaigns. It is just a rumour; it has not been proved to be so. In some institutions there have been terrible racial conflicts between students. This makes the dream of the rainbow nation laughable.

The Mandela legacy has gone to the dogs. The type of leadership we have these days is that of people who are mostly interested in enriching themselves and caring less about the welfare of other people. Most institutions of higher learning have in one way or have been disturbed by some form of protests on “#fees must fall” campaigns. The wheel of learning is not running smoothly.

Fresh students who have just passed matric find themselves in the midst of a volcanic situation.

It becomes a baptism of fire. It is understandable because most students from poor families failed to get access to education because their parents could not afford the fees required from them to pursue their education.

It was frustrating; hence they erroneously resorted to violence to resolve their problems. Such actions are regrettable. There is a general believe that the only language the authorities understand to give a hearing to grievances affecting their subjects is that of violence. But that is not always the case. Every person has a right for freedom.

It is not right that a certain portion of society is affected by a certain problem that it should spill over to people who are less affected by the situation. While it is generally believed that most problems in life as a whole are solved by an educated society.

It is true that education is every child’s birth right but it takes money to exercise that right.

N.W teachers excel at awards

hree North West educators have been named the crème de la crème by the teaching fraternity. This after they scooped various awards atNational Teaching Awards held recently.

Puseletso Mashishi an educator at MoitshokiMofenyi Primary School in Reagile Township near Koster scooped first place in the category of excellence in primary school leadership. Mashinini was awarded R25000 cash and a brand new car.

Another winner was Lesiba Pila from Rutanang Primary School in Rustenburg.

Pila obtained first place in the category of lifetime achievement awards.

In the KhaRiGude volunteer teacher category Innocent Mpofu came out top.

KhaRiGude is an education programme for adults.The programme helps to develop adults by teaching basics in reading, writing and counting.

The three teachers from the province were also awarded cash and other goodies at the national leg of the competition.

Fashion lad takes industry by storm

Models showcasing the work of fashion designer, Tshepiso Mametse, pose for the lensman

F

ashion designer, Tshepiso Mametse (25) from Soshanguve is set to embark on his remarkable journey to showcase his authentic range of clothes.

His capabilities as a garment designer navigate him towards applying the art of natural beauty and aesthetic to clothing.

In an interview with Sosh Times, Mametse spoke

about how the designs exude his effortless style and confidence.

“I started my career in fashion design during 2013 by learning how to draw a fashion figure in an easy step-by-step way. Thereafter I successfully completed my professional studies with the Italian-dressmaking school in comprehensive Dressmaking and Design,” said Mametse.

His expertise includes the handling and care of sewing

machines, designing, cutting and finishing garments issued without erasure on 13 November 2014 at the United Dress Designing and Knitting Schools Association. He then moved to greater heights by creating a brand called D.Murrell Contocci that consists of African and Italian themes and working with members of Uhuru, House of TLK in Mabopane and Churo Private School.

“My brand is a mixture of

African Italian which has the fullness of exclusive materials that ease the comfort of movement in well-fitted garments. This is not just fine art where you express yourself for the sake of art, this is design and my fashion couture is a repetition of ideal inspirations. It is not only about retro, but also includes the exclusive and limited style,”saidMametse.

As a young designer Mametse sees his range in

couture platform becoming a South African exclusive fashion couture brand. The lad’s main goal is to promote his brand internationally and gain exposure worldwide. To him it is all about making African impressions the Italian way.

He is currently working on his design garment brand (D. Murrell Contocci) that will be officially launched in 2017.

Mogotsi releases anticipated album

By Koketso Mangena AFTER ALLEGEDLY, hearing the voice of God speaking to him, Thabo Mogotsi decided to heed the call and pursue a career in Gospel Music.

Hailing from Soshanguve, he first released his Gospel album in 2013,TSOHLE DILOKILEwhich sold approximately 50 000 copies.

His second album,THINA NGE MIHLA,releasedin October 2015, has reportedly, sold 10 000 copies.in Thabo said that it was not an easy road trying to make a name for himself especially as an upcoming singer, he further said that he tried to give up along the journey but the spirit of the Lord gave him the strength to carry on and to continue with his album.

In an interview with Sosh Times, he highlighted the challenges heencountered;“I heard the voice of God speaking to me, and he said to me that all is well and all shall be well, it took me some time to realise the

message. I cannot stop worshipping him, after all the great things he has done for me and my family.

He gives me courage to pursue my dreams as an artist, irrespective of the circumstancesand that is why I named thisalbum THINA NGE MIHLA,” said Mogotsi.

Mogotsi has done a few collaborations with the likes ofMs. Refiwa Manyanga andMr Takie Ndou, winner of the gospel crown award 2015.

He promotes his music by singing in churches, sometimes going to different schools around Soshanguve or even performing at shopping complexes.

“I want to see myself and my music travelling all over the world, preaching and telling people about the word of the mighty one above, how he changed my life, how great is love and grace. I once was in a point where I thought that God does not exist, that it was pointless to live but I managed to overcome my situations by his grace and mercy,” said Mogotsi.

DSD celebrates foster parents day

T

he Department of Social Development in Gauteng North held a foster parents day at Falala community hall in Soshanguve recently. The event was in celebration of sterling work done by foster parents.

According to Ms .Sophy Matsimela, a social worker manager in the Tshwane DSD, foster parents are doing an important job by taking care of orphans. She thanked them for joining the department in celebrating the day and told them that they are important.

She spoke about instances where grandparents hide the whereabouts of parents and encouraged them to always tell the truth about biological parents’ whereabouts.

“We met on behalf of DSD minister to thank you, foster parents for the great work you are doing. However I would like to encourage you to speak out about the problems you come across.

What you guys are doing is not easy since you have been taking care of these kids since they were babies” said Matsimela.

The parents were then grouped to discuss the challenges they came across and what made them happy about fostering kids.

After their groups’ discussions, foster parents said they came across challenges such as teenagers becoming rebellious and uncontrollable, foster kids wanting expensive things, bad influence from outside, teenage pregnancy, kids experimenting with drugs, some of them develop anger while some want to drop out of school.

However they also mentioned that they enjoy the support they get from social workers, seeing the kids they foster becoming successful, they said they appreciate the help they get from the government and

They also appealed to the DSD to train them on how to take care of these kids better and how to discipline them. THE COMMUNITY OF Chris Hani in Soshanguve in cahoots with the Crime Information Gathering (CIG) recently acted as a watchdog after they alerted the police about the illegal drug operation taking place at a house in the area.

The residents vigilantly joined forces and took it upon themselves to assist the crime busting officials with the investigations. Police arrived on the scene and found 77 plastic bags of dagga and packets of Nyaope substances.

Whilst searching the premises the officials discovered an unlicensed fire-arm with a removed serial number.

Two suspects aged 32 and 33 were then arrested.

“A follow up investigation is in progress after we were alerted by the residents about the drug syndicates in the PP1 area. We have also launched a search for other primary suspects related to the case,” said Rietgat Police spokesperson Lolo Mangena.

Meanwhile, the department’s Deputy Director-General of Special Economic Zones and Economic Transformation, Sipho Zikode, on Tuesday conducted site visits to Gauteng based beneficiaries of the Workplace Challenge Programme (WPC), which is an initiative of the dti.

Eskom continues maintenance plans

W

hile Eskom continues its maintenance plans, no load shedding is expected going into the autumn and winter seasons.

In a statement released by the power utility, Eskom said it had taken advantage of the opportunity presented by the decreased demand in electricity over the recent Easter weekend and ramped up maintenance on its generating units.

“This was done in order to improve the performance and reliability of our power generating fleet ahead of winter. Twelve scheduled maintenance outages were executed, plus an additional two outages for unplanned maintenance.

“In line with our stated aim of reducing the usage of open cycle gas turbines (OCGTs), none were used over the long weekend,” said Eskom in the statement.

Planned maintenance peaked at 10 000 MW as partial load losses were low and dropped to a record 1 215 MW, with an average of 1 499 MW over the weekend period. On average, the total unplanned outages were below 5 000 MW for the period.

“Our prognosis for the rest of the summer going into autumn and winter is that there will be no load shedding,” said Eskom.

The utility said it has now been 235 days since South Africans last experienced load shedding, with the exception of 2 hours and 20 minutes on 14 September 2015. – SAnews.gov.za

Top names line-up at youth championships

op athletes will go head to head in a three-day Athletics South Africa (ASA) Sub-Youth, junior and Under 23 Championships which kicks off at Germiston Stadium, Ekurhuleni in Johannesburg.

In perhaps the most anticipated race at this high-altitude venue, speed sensations Kyle Appel of Western Province and Gauteng North prodigies Gift Leotlela plus Clarence Munyai, will line up in the Junior Men’s 100m and 200m events, after the trio were included in the entry lists for both distances.

All three athletes have displayed tremendous potential, with Appel earning the silver medal in the 200m dash at last year’s IAAF World Youth Championships, Leotlela setting a national youth 100m record of 10.20 seconds late last season, and Munyai clocking 20.39 over 200m in Johannesburg less than two weeks ago to qualify for the Rio Olympics.

In the U-23 Women’s 100m sprint, TebogoMamathu will look to close in on the Olympic qualifying standard of 11.32, also forming part of Gauteng North’s powerful sprint contingent.

With senior athletes Carina Horn and Alyssa Conley having already dipped under the required time to be considered for Rio Games selection, Mamathu will be eager to shine in Germiston and place herself in contention for the Rio team.

Other rising stars who are expected to stand out at the annual age group championships include Youth Olympic Games 400m Hurdles champion GezelleMagerman and Gauteng North teammates Werner Visser who is the World Youth Discus Throw champion, and Nicola de Bruyn, the World Youth Championships 200m bronze medallist.

The Championship will see athletes of all ages from around the country who will be eager to reap the rewards of their efforts during the domestic track and field season, with medals and national titles up for grabs across the various age groups.

For some athletes the Championships, hosted by Central Gauteng Athletics, will serve as a qualifying opportunity and form part of their build-up to international events, including the Southern Region Youth Track and Field Championships in Lesotho (April 30 - May 1), the Southern Region Junior Track and Field Championships in Zambia (June 4-5) and the IAAF World Junior Championships in Bydgoszcz (July 19-24).

While for others, particularly in the U-23 division, it will also create a launching pad to major open events such as the ASA Senior T&F and Combined Events Championships in Stellenbosch (April 15-16), the CAA Senior T&F Championships in Durban (June 22-26) and the Olympic Games in Rio (August 16-21).

1. Good day, Thabang!!!

Welcome to Sports Talk, briefly tell us about your career.

-Thanks.I am a PSL Assistant referee and have risen right from the lowest ranks of refereeing including local football association in Soshanguve (SOLFA) through to the Vodacom League to where I am today.

2. What are the qualities of a good referee?

-Well, the qualities are many and varied but core amongst them include mental fitness to make prompt and informed decisions at all times, physical endurance to help you to remain energetic in the midst of high fastpaced games.

3. Challenges referees have to deal with in their professional lives?

-Look,I think the referee’s job is the toughest of them all in the game of football, in that any unfair or biased decision will not only spoil

a good game but may trigger booing and violence from the fans in the stadium who travel distances and pay their hardearned money to enjoy good football.

4. Soshanguve seems to produce more PSL referees than other areas. Would you agree?

-You know,I think you are right because when one looks at the number of referees,past and present,who have officiated from PSL to CAF up until FIFA levels,they are so many. These include the likes of Robert Sithole, Stevens Khumalo and Peter Chauke to name but a few.All these only point to the quality of refereeing workshops conducted by Voice Skhosana and others.

5. Why is the standard of refereeing between overseas and our local referees different yet they use the same rule book?

-I want to believe part of the reason could be that referees

overseas don’t compromise rules and they apply the latest devices to the latter.Again,I think our culture of football is not the same and that may have some bearing.

6. According to you,which rules should be amended?

-Look, it’s not for me to decide which rule to be amended but I guess so far all the rules are ok moreover considering the use of technological devices to promote competitive football and fair play.

7. Talk to us about some of these devices and their impact in the game of football?

-Goal line technology is there to help referees make an informed decision when it comes to a goal scored.

Secondly communication devices promote effective communication between the whistle man and his assistant referees,just to mention a few.

8. Just how important is communication between the

referee and his lines-men?

-It is so important in that it may spoil a good game if,for instance,an assistant referee raises up a flag to say off-side while a referee says play-on.

This disagreement is what often causes violence at the stadium.

9. Your comment on referees involved in match-fixing and general corruption?

-Normally I don’t wish to comment on such sensitive subjects but want to believe that whoever is found guilty of such should be brought to book.

10. Your immediate future plans?

-To continue working hard to promote good football and fair play in our country.

Again,to work hard to raise the flag of my community, Soshanguve, high so I can pave the way for others who will be following my footsteps.

His gym partner Thapelo Pota from Lephengville near Temba who will be competing in bantam featherweight said “We look up to Luckyboy Monyebane because he is the first professional boxer from Dikebu. He was an inspiration to me personally and boxing has always been my dream,” said Pota.

The 22 year old won his first title back in 2008 when he won gold medal in the amateur development championships. “I have achieved my short-term goal which was to be a professional I will now focus on building my brand and winning world titles” he said.

We would like to encourage other boxers and athletes to train hard, never give up and keep their eyes on the price.

We are a proof that it does not matter where you come from but it is all about how dedicated you are. Boxers must know that boxing is about winning or losing, they must remember why they started.

CAF holds Club Licensing Seminar THE TWO-DAY seminar was attended by all the 32 members (clubs) of the Premier Soccer League and SAFA members.

In his opening remarks, PSL General Manager of Football, Derek Blanckensee thanked club members for their cooperation in the process of preparing for implementation of the FIFA Club Licensing.

“In the last few months, we have been busy with a consultative process which has included workshops in various parts of the country engaging our clubs on Club Licensing and ensuring that we adapt the Club Licensing to our local conditions. Since then a great deal of work has gone into developing Regulations that will be specific to the league,” Blanckensee said.

SAFA CEO, Dennis Mumble said Club Licensing was crucial in the Federation’s Vision 2022. He applauded the PSL for the strides it has already made in laying the groundwork in implementing Club Licensing.
