MEC Lehari presents Meritorious Awards

hey are young, gifted, determined and it is no wonder these two Class of 2017 students beat the odds against them and gave the MEC for Education and Sports Development, Mr Sello Lehari, reasons to be upbeat on the occasion of the release of the matric results recently at Wolmarans Ho‎ḝr Skool.

The MEC presented the special Meritorious Awards to Tshegofatso Moruvi of Jahane Mokolobetsi Secondary School in Bapong, Madibeng Sub-district and Luday Rashad van Der Merwe of the Meerhof Special School in Madibeng Sub-district, Bojanala Platinum.

The North West Province had reported a decline in the 2017 matric and retained fourth position at national level with a 3.06% percentage points decline from 82% in 2016 to 79%. In an in-

terview post the results release, MEC Lehari acknowledged that he was not happy about the decline, but he was, however, satisfied with the outcomes.

He said the department had planned for better results since books and stationery were delivered on time at schools.

He also acknowledged that there were disruptions at certain schools pre-writing of examinations. “The department will capacitate teachers and our long term plan it is to employ maths and science teachers in our efforts to make Bokone Bophirima the hub of maths and science”, added MEC Lehari.

He said the department would meet with principals at districts to discuss strategies to improve the performance of students. On under-performing schools the MEC said; “We will discuss with the principals of these schools to seek solutions in helping them to improve their results”.

Deservedly becoming a jewel on the crown of MEC Sello Lehari’s Department of Education and Sports Development.

W

e pride ourselves as a province about the performance of our leaners which has been consistence for the past three consecutive years, dating back from 2014. We obtained position two (2) in 2014, position four (4) in 2015 and position four (4) in 2016. Although the province has been able to maintain a stable position for the past two (2) years, the situation seems not to look so rosy in the current academic year, i.e.

2017 due to the upheavals experienced.

For the past academic year, our province was plagued by a series of service delivery protests which negatively impacted on learning and teaching. Most of our learners lost valuable contact time which made themsuffer from curriculum delivery backlog. At some instances our schools were torched leaving our learners without a conducive environment for learning.

The service delivery protests has a direct bearing or influence on our matric results hence the ripple effect our learner performing not according to our target. I am satisfied about the results but not happy, satisfied in a

We dropped by 3.06% from 82.5% of 2016, despite our ambition of achieving 86%. In Grade 12 the quantity of pass is determined by the number of candidates who made the 30% + pass percentage and the quality passes are determined by the candidates who achieved 40% + pass percentage, number of candidates with distinction and university entrance.

The pass rate with progressed candidates is 79.44% and without the progressed candidates it is 82.1%. It must be acknowledged that 53.2% of the progressed candidates passed the examination.

For the past academic year we tried many intervention strategies in pursuit of helping our learners in their studies. I had a series of meetings with the school principals, chairpersons of SGBs, Subject Advisors and District Directors as part of our plan to improve our matric results for 2017.

s part of Roots Butchery's Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme aimed at playing a leading role in developing value human capital through investment in education, the giant retail store recently donated back packs to Grade 1 learners from two schools in Ga-Rankuwa and Soshanguve respectively.

The programme is aimed at boosting the Grade 1 learners' condence as they start their 12 year schooling journey. The elated learners burst into song and dance as they received new school bags lled with new pencil cases and other stationeries.

In an interview with Sosh Times, GaRankuwa Roots Butchery's Mr. Louis Reedy said as a company they know that

parents view education as a catalyst for social mobility.

“We have decided to structure our CSR programme in a way that it will bridge the social mobility of our community specically via education empowerment. An investment in education is important as it will raise the standards of local talents in order for them to compete in the larger job market once they leave school,” said Reedy.

The Chairperson of School Governing Body at Lower Primary School in GaRankuwa Mr. Motsiie Matlou said it is encouraging to see big a corporate giving back to the communities they serve.

“It is encouraging seeing a corporate

“We hope that this partnership will grow even more because we now know that by buying from them we are investing our hard earned cash which they will plough back to us by supporting our children's future. Meteoric rise of a newsman

O

ne’s upbringing shouldn’t dictate one’s destiny in life as is the case of Mr. Kiletsi Dikobe, from selling sweets and peanuts to being offered the opportunity to be Interim News Editor to this date SMU FM (Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University), life has gone full circle.

Known as ManKay or Deekay Wa Lehaslara (the hustler) on the airwaves, he was born in a small village of Legonyane near Brits, North West in July 1987. The last born at home in a family of nine, he grew up just like an ordinary child but there were challenges.

He attended both primary and middle school at Legonyane and decided to finish his high school education at Micha-Kgasi high school at Kgabalatsane because he felt like he needed to be in a different environment.

When doing matric, he relocated to GaRankuwa because travelling with bus was exhausting and time consuming.

“In the period of my schooling, I was selling sweets and peanuts whilst at home I was selling ice cream and ice pops. My parents at that time were working at Randburg, so the money that they were giving us wasn’t enough to cater for us as I was staying with extended family. So I had to make ends meet as a means to sustain us,” said Dikobe He further said “At high school I was introduced to photography by my cousin and I grew a passion for photography ever since. I grew up listening to the radio and I fell in love with radio broadcasting, that’s when I decided to pursue career in media after my matric, but due to financial constraints back at home, I couldn’t study the course I wanted, instead I enrolled with one of the colleges to do a radio broadcasting course though I wanted to do Media Studies as a whole so that I can gain more knowledge and skills in that field.”

The following year after the completion of my matric, I joined the Efeng Bacha Youth Club under the umbrella of Nelson Mandela Children’s Fund at Johannesburg. I was studying while I was a member of the youth club. Prior to my completion of my studies, I got an opportunity to do my experiential training with Dr George Mukhari Hospital Academic Radio but, my training got interrupted by the commitments with the youth club because we were given a task to host SADC Children’s Parliament and also to host Nelson Mandela’s birthday.

Because of the challenges of getting into media field, he had to look for a job, so he got a job with a Logistic company at Kempton Park. While working at that company, he got an offer with Gauteng City Region Academy to do a project at schools that was focusing on career development. So he decided to come back to Ga-Rankuwa because at that time he was staying at Phumula in Ekurhuleni.

In closing he said “In 2014, I was informed of the new radio station being launched in Ga-Rankuwa. Based on my career and the passion I have for radio, I decided to try my luck by sending my CV. I got the opportunity to be one of the presenters at SMU FM (Sefako Makgatho Health Sciences University).

Last year I was nominated to be Interim Production Manager then after few months I was offered the opportunity to be Interim News Editor to this date. The journey I went through, taught me a lot and also for the fact that I was raised by a Christian family it has humbled me to be a better person and be able to assist the needy.”

George Mkhari leads Africa in fight against cancer

A

s part of the government’s concerted effort to boost service delivery and diagnosis of cancer patients, Gauteng provincial Member of the Executive Committee (MEC) responsible for Health Dr. Gwen Ramokgopa launched the first of its kind biomedical scanning system on the African continent at Dr. George Mkhari Academic Hospital recently.

The R36 million, Positron Emision Tomography / Commuted Tomography (PET-CT) imaging system will revolutionize the medical diagnosis by improving management of patients and research.

Speaking during the launch the elated Ramokgopa said the installation PETCT system bears testimony of the government’s unreserved commitment to improve patient care and safety.

“It is worth noting that Dr. George Mkhari Academic Hospital serves a 1, 7 million population catchment area (which includes the Bojanala District in the North West and Limpopo Province) from where patients needing treatment for cancer is derived.

“Therefore, I am optimistic that this launch will mark the beginning of an end of suffering to the majority of our cancer patients who used to be referred to Steve Biko Academic Hospital for appropriate PET-CT scan diagnosis prior to specific treatment for their type malignancy,” said Ramokgopa.

She said this was less ideal as the overloading Steve Biko Academic Hospital resulting in tremendous long queues which had negative impact on patient management.

By Letlhogonolo Mosete IN AN EFFORT to create a friendly environment whilst maintaining a professional standard in the provision of quality health services, the New Eersterus Clinic held an open day for community members who frequent its corridors.

The aim of the open day was to inform the community about services such as the

antenatal program, emergencies and nutrition rendered by the health institution, also services provided by other governmental institutions outside the clinic’s scope were highlighted. On site HIV and Tuberculosis tests were conducted on the day.

Sister Adelaide Mapa said; “We wanted to interact with the community and inform them about the services they can access at the clinic, mother to

child transmission of HIV can be prevented and educate them about services they might have not known that we provide at the clinic. We partnered with other stakeholders outside the clinic’s scope to bring their services to the community’s doorstep.”

In the meanwhile an 8 months pregnant 23 year- old Ms. PhumzileNyoni was crowned the queen of the catwalk as a beauty contest amongst pregnant

mothers to be, held on the day to lighten the mood.

“I am very happy to be crowned the winner, being pregnant doesn’t mean you don’t have to take care of your wellbeing, that’s when you have to be extra careful in order to ensure the wellbeing of your unborn child,” she said.

The pageant organizer Ms. Daisy Ngwenya who also looks after the wellbeing of pregnant

women at the clinic said that the aim of incorporating a beauty pageant on the open day was shows that pregnancy should be embraced and not be seen as a hindrance.

Motivational speakers shared their stories to inspire and educate the attentive crowd whilst traditional dancers did what they do best and entertained those in attendance.
