ater reservoirs in Soshanguve are empty prompting the City of Tshwane to call on more than 500 000 residents of the area to use water sparingly. Already, Rand Water has imposed water restrictions on Gauteng municipalities amid the high rate of consumption and the drought fearfully grappling the country.

Tshwane Metro spokesperson, Mr Lindela Mashego, warned that the water reservoirs would need to be filled up before the restrictions could be lifted.

“Water tankers are now roving the streets supplying water to households. The adversely affected areas in Soshanguve areas are block F, G, H, AA, CC, UU, VV, and WW and some in Soshanguve East.

“Recently the residents of Block K, L and M found themselves without water due to the restrictions. This was to allow the water reservoir to fill up again. Other blocks could also run dry if water usage is not reduced drastically as the reservoir feeding other areas are also critically low,” said Mashego.

Mabopane was also not spared of water restrictions. Supplier, Odi Water has decided to implement water shedding.

Panic stricken residents took to the City of Tshwane social media platforms to air their frustrations with the municipality’s snail pace in responding to reported cases of meter pipes leakages. They accused the city of being privy to worsening the situation.

Mr. Pontsho Seemane took a swipe at the municipality accusing it of not doing enough to mitigating the situation by not prioritising the aging maintenance of the water network; “If the municipality is run the way it should, it must

start catching up with years of negligence, zero maintenance, backlog of leakages and repairs.

Then at least we would not be in the situation that we find ourselves in”.

Ms Gontse Letsoalo echoed Seeme’s sentiments; “We phone the city’s call centre to complain about leaking pipes and they get fixed after 4 weeks. We also call to complain about neighbours who waste water, but nothing is done”.

Ms. Molebatse Molly Malungane posted; “(There are) water leakages at my place and they have not sent anyone to fix it. Reference No 788529.”

Just recently, an aged water pipe in Block F West burst open flooding several houses and the water ran for several kilometres down Buitekant Road.In the presence of Sosh Times reporters residents tried in vain to call the City of Tshwane’s call centre for hours..

named for fear of reprisal said the problem has been ongoing for the past four years.

“We are concerned about the time the municipality takes before they could fix the leakages. Sometimes they respond after two to three days.

The billing system is so erroneous that it has spiked from R 500 we are paying to R 3500. We do not even have swimming pools and we hardly use a lot of water”, said the resident.

Mashego urged residents to report water leakages at waterleaks@ tshwane.gov.za or simply dial 012 358 9999. “We call on the residents to re-use water where possible. If you wash your car, please note that you are only allowed to do so with a hosepipe fitted with automatic selfclosing devices, buckets or with waterless products. Please do not wash or hose hard-surface or paved areas”.

Taxi driver found dead in a veld

LOATE POLICE Station is investigating a case of murder and hijacking after a 32 year old taxi driver, Mr. Sipho Yilo of Winterveldt, was found dead recently in the Tswaing Crater by a community member. Yilo had been missing for a week before his already decomposing body

was found.

He was last seen by taxi owner, Mr. Tshepo Tsotetsi, in the evening of the day he went missing. Yilo had driven passengers from Mabopane Train Station to Wintervedlt.

According to Tsotetsi, Yilo parked the taxi at the usual secured parking area.

“I always told security that

this particular taxi would come a little later than usual and that day I had not known that it had not been parked until I received a call from tracker company informing me that the alarm keeps going on and off on the system as if someone is tampering with it the engine” said Tsotetsi.

by Hope Warriors Children’s Charity together with Bank Seta is slowly proving to be pivotal in ensuring that learners from disadvantaged schools take Maths and Science as major subjects in high school.

With the number of learners still shying away from Maths and Science as major subjects in high school, the Maths and Science Support Programme that readies grade 11 learners to grade 12, has seen changes in the academic performance of learners involved in the programme.

Addressing schools from Soshanguve and its surrounding areas at Filadelfia Secondary School located in Soshanguve, Hope Warriors Chief Executive Officer Mr Patrick Mashanda said, “I have realised and experienced the impact of education in my own life.

These programmes are done in order to unlock the potential

of learners. We want to show learners that it doesn’t matter where you come from but with proper and conducive learning environment anything is possible.”

“Not only do we offer after school support programmes but we also offer career guidance to learners. We have been active in Soshanguve for sometime, our vision is that everyone reaches their full potential,” Mashinda said.

BankSeta Representative Ms Sharon Mokgwatlheng said, “I would like to applaud you guys for not choosing the easy route but for choosing Maths and Science as your subject of choice because they are seen by some of your peers as difficult subjects. As a Sector Education and Training Authority, we want to offer all of you the necessary support to ensure that you pass with flying colours. We didn’t have such programmes when growing up. Learnerships and bursaries are also available to those who want to play an

active role in the economy.”

Tshwane North District Department of Education Representative Pranay Devchand said, “As a department we want to thank all the stakeholders involved in the Maths and Science Support Programme.

The transference of education and skills is important in developing learners and as a department we are happy to partner with people that seek to unleash the potential of learners.”

One of the teachers from Hebron Technical and Commercial High School involved in the programme and giving feedback on its impact Mr Ri Mogwase said, “The programme makes a huge difference in the academic progress of learners. We have been monitoring learners’ progress and seen the gradual change in their performance.

We have seen a change in attitude and behaviour as well; it is reaching the souls of our learners.”

CHIARA BACHETTI is a 17 years old Italian student residing on the global AFS Intercultural programme and for the next 10 months she will be a Soshanguve resident and a Grade 11 learner pupil at Memezelo Secondary School.

The jovial Italian warmed her way into the hearts of the locals and was soon ‘christened’ Siphosihle, roughly translated, a beautiful gift. Bachetti was selected

by AFS to participate in an exchange programme. AFS is an inclusive community of global citizens: students, families, volunteers, schools and others determined to build bridges between cultures.

In an interview with Sosh Times Bachetti said: “Living in an unfamiliar surrounding has been refreshing so far.

I have found a new family that welcomed me with open arms. As I am a new learner in Memezelo it was a bit challenging for me to adapt to a new school because there are only black learners.

But I have made new friends and learned a lot about the African heritage.

It is not every day that

a white person is spotted passing by in the township.

Everything is different from my home country. The teachers here are much more eager to help. I am currently learning seven subjects. Since arriving in the school it was challenging at first to learn the whole third term syllabus in a month but I studied hard to catch up and passed”.

The student exchange programme is also known as the American Field Service (AFS) Intercultural programme. It is a nonprofit organisation aimed at providing knowledge of different racial and cultural backgrounds.

Bachetti’s hostess is none other than the flamboyant lady of the blue, Sergeant Ntombizodwa Maphanga of the Rietgat SAPS. Exuberant, Maphanga said;“I volunteered to host Chiara with an aim of changing the mindset of others. She will be staying with us for a period of 10 months. I named her Siphosihle because she is now part of our family. It is very rare to find a white person living with a black family but I do not read much into our different racial backgrounds”.

oft-spoken, articulate, family man and avid reader are some of the many of attributes if you had to string a sentence that can best describe newly appointed Rietgat Police Station Spokesperson Captain Stephen Bongani Maluleka.

Affectionately known by his township moniker, ‘Stigano’, he was born the fourth child of Koos and Jeannivah Maluleka, with four siblings on the 18 of April 1979 in the not so dusty streets of Madidi in the then homeland of Bophuthatswana now North West province. He started his academic life in Mpyatilo Primary School in 1986 as a quiet but ambitious young boy and later in 1991, moved to Soshanguve where he had to keep up and adjust his tongue to speak Sesotho at Khanareng Primary School and further proceeded to Reitumetse High School in tandem with the Soshanguve Technical High School in block L where he matriculated in the late 90 s.

Once unemployed and without money to further his education he never gave up. In 1999 his late brother Sam hooked him up with a job at Flash Metered Taxis in Pretoria where he was a telephone and radio controller,basically his job was to answer the phone get the direction from the caller and dispatch a metered taxi to pick up the caller/ passenger. “Ooh what a job, earning a paltry R900 a month with a business card in your pocket,” Maluleka said.

Then in the year 2001, the company suffered financial constraints and was shut down. Maluleka said “Those business cards became useless in my pocket and the harsh reality kicked in. Need I mention that I had a one year old son to take care of...and his mother who is now my supportive wife Mina together with my family supported me to soldier on.”

In January 2002 his wife who was his girlfriend then, asked him to accompany her to search for a school and they ended up in the then Technikon North West(TNW).As her girlfriend was busy enquiring here and there, the Captain realised that tertiary education is not as

Upon completing his internship he was coopted in the employ of the department as a Communication Officer/ Journalist for the flagship magazine called Landnews as well as the internal newsletter then known as Bolela-Let’s talk. After the World Cup in 2010 he started showing interest in the men and women in blue by observing how they present themselves to the public through their magazines and television programme such as,’When Duty Calls.’

NSFAS applicants urged to sign agreements THE NATIONAL STUDENT Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) has called on students, who have applied for NSFAS, to immediately sign their loan agreement forms (LAFs) and schedules of particulars (SOP) at their respective universities.

NSFAS Executive Officer Msulwa Daca said due to the recent student protests on campuses, students have applied for NSFAS but have not signed the LAF and SOP forms.

“We are calling on these students to sign their LAFs and SOPs at their respective universities as soon as possible.

This is particularly important because NSFAS will not be able to process tuition payments for students who have not signed their agreements.

“This will affect their 2017 registration, as outstanding debt would need to be cleared by that time. If you are a NSFAS funded student now and have not sign your agreement form as yet, please do so before end of November,” said Daca.

Daca said NSFAS is also under pressure from funders, who want to fund students that are doing well academically and complete their studies on record time.

“We have this enormous pressure because of the kind of model we use to incentivise our students. We convert 40% of the loans we give each year into bursaries for students who pass and then give 100% bursaries

shwane University of Technology held a memorial service for its 23- year-old Students Representative Council member, Benjamin Phehla, who died after being hit by a car during the #FeesMustFall protest in Soshanguve.

He was a final year Information and Communication Technology student.

Phehla’s family and hundreds of Students from different universities attended the memorial service held at the TUT’s Gencor Hall, Soshanguve campus.

“When I was asked to speak at the memorial service as Phehla’s friend, I did not know what I was going to say” said the deceased’s close friend Kgabo Molifi. “Benjamin Phehla moved like the Holy Spirit, He was a brother, friend, comrade and fellow worshipper, we must continue to wage the struggle in his memory” said Molifi.

DE-STRESS, NOT DISTRESS Preparing for examinations may be daunting, but it is very rewarding when you finally have your qualification and everyone is celebrating with you. This means that one needs to exercise a fair amount of responsibility, especially over your studies. This responsibility becomes burdensome when you start to worry about how much it is. There are several ways to avoid this trap. With patience and discipline, you can carry the weight of academic pressure with more ease. How do you do that?

ALLOW THE LOAD TO LIGHTEN • When the workload increases, your level of stress tends to do the same.

Get started early on so that you are able to digest smaller portions of information as compared to doing too much work in a shorter time.

• Be conscientious about your time commitments. Many learners over commit themselves without realizing what kind of stress they are setting themselves up for. It is good to be active and involved, but allow yourself to gradually increase responsibilities instead of taking everything

on at once.

• Be kind to yourself when you feel overwhelmed. Everyone faces a certain amount of adversity from the demands of academia, and some positive reinforcement to stay focused can help. If you encourage yourself instead of berating yourself or your circumstances, you may be pleasantly surprised by the ease with which you can handle pressure.

Remind Yourself • Not all stress is negative. Certain kinds of excitement like the thrill of playing your favourite sport or connecting with new people, can help to alleviate the effects of negative stress. It is important to not only know, but also feel the difference between these kinds of stress.

• Anxiety comes with everyone’s transition into independence. School can add to this anxiety, but it can also foster the confidence to cope and succeed when you apply yourself.

Believe in your capabilities, even when things don’t turn out the way you expect.

• When the stress in your life becomes overwhelming, it is okay to seek support, either from those closest to you or from a

Breast Cancer needs community support

W

hen my cousin shared the news with my family that she is diagnosed with breast cancer. I felt in that moment somewhat akin to what I feel now, frightened and intrigued. For a moment I thought, no wait, is this true or a way of manipulating her divorce process by giving people an opportunity to focus on a different matter.

It is when she took off her wig that I saw her skin looked different as she assured us with a soothing smile that she is on

chemotherapy and she is going to survive it. I was unsure whether to cry or laugh at the foreignness of the moment.

Heart-breaking ignorance, that I have always thought this pandemic was for white people only not us.

We often hear that someone is fighting breast cancer but it is hard to grasp what it truly means when it is someone close to you. Her eyes still sparkled when she laughed and said “cancer may have taken everything away from me but it will not take my love and joy”.

There is no way to describe

what it’s like for a woman to hear the words “you have breast cancer”. It is a battle that most people don’t choose and is very easy to default in self-pity when you are in that journey.

Although she recently passed away, her motivation continues to live through her strength and undying hope.

Here are few lessons I learnt from my cousins to help a family or friend with cancer: Every October, we see people wearing little pink ribbons to celebrate Breast Cancer Awareness month across the globe. The media inundate us with information about breast self-exams etc. We focus more on bigger medical words such as chemotherapy, radiation, lumpectomy, mastectomy, reconstruction and put a little emphasis on the words that can bring hope to cancer patients.

There will be times in your life when a close someone in your life will need your love and support after they received breast cancer diagnosis. Perhaps they will be in need of a shoulder to lean on. It will be the toughest fight of their life and helping them through it won’t be easy.

When they share the news with you, thank them for trusting you to share. Although panicking is normal but try to

express your emotions by hugging and holding their hand than saying something you might regret later.

Educate yourself on the information regarding the illness by getting details and facts but most importantly comfort them rather than bombarding them with information.

I strongly feel it’s important to commit yourself by letting them know, you will be there for them throughout the journey. Everyone who was close to my cousin walked away. She was going through divorce and was evicted from her house.

It was important in this trying time for family and friends to bring hands to help as she could not walk at some point. Bring healthy food over her place.

Buy airtime so she can call the loved ones.

Arrange for a house or room cleaning service or help with the kids. Some people go through this having small children that needs to be looked after.

Ensure that they keep away from negative people. They are already feeling down and they don’t need to be surrounded by negativity.

The word death should not be a word uttered. Make the cancer patient feel normal by treating them with respect.

Cancer diagnosis has uncertainties; adjust your wording to something positive rather than false hopes. Try to avoid words such as, I know someone who has cancer and they beat it or my colleague survived it.

Most importantly pray for strength, don’t let the difficult situation drain you. Be careful not to become too discouraged by the negative emotions expressed by the patients living with cancer.

With such an environment, you can always create a new energy and positive value.

Boost your confidence and attitude about the illness by reading more about it. Make the most of the time spent with the loved one or friend around the process of surviving cancer.

Doing nothing about it is easy now but the regret you will carry tomorrow is unbearable. Be ever thankful that you assisted a family member or a friend in this time of need.

r. Jabulani Nzilane, a Soshanguve author said in an interview with Sosh Times that the country’s schools were not conducive to proper learning and are similar to prison.

He said this with much emphasis that learners learn better when they are playing and they never forget what they have learnt in a playful environment.

“As it stands, I have written 6 books in crossword puzzles mode.

Initially the books were intended for the Heritage Month. They are written in isiNdebele, isiZulu, Setswana and Xitsonga as well as Mathematics and Physics”, said Nzilane.

Nzilane said his books embrace the concept of Mindful Teaching = Mindful Learning.This entails that for a meaningful learning to take place; all learners must be given space to learn in an environment conducive for learning.

“The books will help children learn better because they are crossword puzzles books. Children/ learners can compete to finish the crossword puzzles and learn at the same time. The books are made for people from age 4 to 120,” Nzilane added.

The crossword puzzle books are supplementary school material as they will help school learners and

more.

Amongst the books he has written is a fictional novel called “The Naked President”. This novel has a direct inference to matters taking place in the political scenario in South Africa today. It attests that “The Rainbow Nation” is under siege from the Asasabonsan, an African vampire unleashed by Mr. Godwin Mpiyakhe, who is both the President of South Africa and the Azanian National Convention political party (ANC), who has fallen out of favour with his political organization.

Mpiyakhe is about to be recalled from government, as he has embezzled the state coffers and built himself a palace at his rural homestead in Kwazulu Natal and now his party is fed up with his behavior.

However in order for Mpiyakhe to remain in power, he goes to the shadows and employs the help of a dark and sinister African Vampire called the Asasabonsam to fight his battles and consolidate his power.

It is unfortunate when people have no respect for their thoughts. When we pray each day, The Creator answers us through thoughts that linger in the brain without recognition. These thoughts get elevated into dreams because they have been given the respect they deserve.

When you put action into a dream, it changes to become a Vision which needs a Mission, Values, Quality then Objective and finally a goal for it to be realised. Goals without Objectives are laughable and a sign of ignorance.

ASC campaign to defuse ticking youth unemployment time-bomb Own Correspondence A VARIETY OF vocational skills training programmes targeted at unemployed youth from poor communities who cannot afford payment to access education and training opportunities was launched by Anchor Skills College(ASC).The internationally accredited programme dubbed the” Take it to them campaign” was unveiled at a Gala Dinner held in East Lynne, Pretoria.

The ground-breaking initiative aimed at defusing the ticking youth unemployment time-bomb and increase chances of young people to participate in the economy is to be rolled out in partnership with the National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) wherever there is need across the country at no cost to participants.

Renowned international speaker, founder of

Map4Life Institute and author of the book “Life Management precedes Time Management,” Glen McQuirk,commended the programme for responding to the plight of unskilled young people the majority of whom have lost hope because of the 42% unemployment rate among them.

“We have to die to self and put young people at the centre of whatever we do even during these difficult times. If we do not plant a seed we will not reap a harvest”, McQuirk said highlighting the laws of compensation, delayed gratification and increasing returns.

Former Speaker of the National Assembly and Public Works Minister, Gwen MahlanguNkabinde supported ASC and it was moving in the right direction towards addressing the skills deficit among unemployed youth, in line with the

objectives of the National Development Plan and provincial priorities.

“Without improving opportunities for young people who are our future to acquire skills, South Africa will not be able meet its objective to address the triple challenges of poverty, youth unemployment and the widening inequality gap,” said MahlanguNkabinde.

Twenty year-old Khumo Sibanyoni who is part of the ASC 2016 Hospitality class that showcased with a five course meal that was served at the launch said that participation in the skills programme has restored his hope for the future.

“The three months onsite experiential learning we are about to complete has exposed us to what is involved in the hospitality industry and broadened our horizon,” he maintained.

rovincial head of the North West, Mr. Supra Mahumapelo, believes that the reduction of service delivery protests is in a clear indication that there is improved dialogue between the provincial government and its community.

He said the improvement of dialogue between his government and the citizenry came about following discussions and resolutions taken by the province’s Executive Council.

The premier, however, acknowledged that while the level of service delivery satisfaction is increasing, there is still a need for the provincial government to attend to some outstanding issues such as construction of roads, provision and accessibility of healthcare services as well as creation of employment and skills development opportunities especially for the youth in the province’s villages, townships and small dorpies.

Blessing gets a makeover EARLY NOVEMBER 2016

ears of joy streamed down the faces of the residents of Suurman outside Hammanskraal during the official handover of the newly renovated Blessing Day Care Centre by the international aid and humanitarian organisation Joint Africa Management (JAM) South Africa recently.

The Managing Director of JAM, Mr. David Brown, said the makeover was part of his organisation’s goal to create healthy, safe learning environment for children in under privileged areas.

“We believe that the children are the future and for us to break the cycle of poverty we have to ensure that the children have a solid foundation. Hence we have made it our duty to create an enabling environment for them to strive.

“We have seen children who are old enough to enter primary school but are not able to

recognise more than three letters of the alphabet. To achieve that we place emphasis on nutrition, conducive environment for children to learn,” said Brown.

Brown said they have been providing the centre with a nutritious porridge which contains 75 percent of child’s daily required macro and micronutrients on daily basis.

The Principal of Blessing Ms. Eva Mathiba, said the makeover would allow them to focus on the development of each child; “Before the renovation we used a tin shack that was not conducive for learning. During winter it would get cold inside and hot during summer. We are grateful that JAM volunteers in Switzerland went house to house to raise funds for us to realise this dream’.

-Thank you.Well, though I do not consider myself a star as yet, but I must say it has been a very tough journey. I must admit that playing for Tshwane Mayoral Cup inaugural tournament in 2009 was the start of the beginning of good time yet to come for me.

Even though I grew up watching a lot of soccer with my father, but the tournament was a turning point in my career.

2) HOW DO YOU STRIKE A BALANCE BETWEEN SCHOOL WORK AND THE DEMANDS OF YOUR SOCCER CAREER? -You know, when you do something you are passionate about you always find a way of juggling your commitments with ease.I am currently doing Grade 12 at Crawford College and I am at school from 8h00 to 15h00. I get home around 16h00 and immediately hit to the training until 18hoo. I do my homework from 20h00 until around 22h00. Over the weekend we play league games and friendlies and that is roughly how my daily schedule looks like.

3) WHAT ARE YOUR FUTURE

PLANS AND HOW DO YOU HOPE TO ACHIEVE THEM? -Academically, my dream is to go to a tertiary institution next year and enrol for a Degree in Civil Engineering. In soccer my dream is to wear a jersey for my senior team,Super Sport United and later play for Bafana Bafana.

4) ARE YOU CONTENT WITH WHAT YOU HAVE ACHIEVED THUS FAR? -Oh yeah!!!But as always you feel you can do much more than what you get. I am really proud of my achievements because many couldn’t achieve that in their lifetime. Some of my proudest moments include, representing Tshwane and captaining the team at an international tournament in South Korea(2009), playing for Amatuks Academy (20102012), Supersport United (2013 to date), S.A. U/17 National team, Multi-Choice Diski Challenge (MDC) to name but a few.

5)WHAT IS YOUR TAKE ON THE CURRENT CROP OF PLAYERS AND THEIR FAST LIVES? -Our players do not have enough local role-models to inspire them, so they end up looking at wrong people for motivation hence the fast lives associated with drugs and expensive

According to TUT spokesperson, Willa de Ruyter, Mokoka who was recognised by the university days before the IAAF Gold Label Road Race, took a solitary lead in the last seven kilometres.

“The 31-year-old Mokoka clocked 2:10:18 to take a commanding victory. Although his time was 2:38 shy of his personal best of 2:07:40 last year, when he finished second, and was the slowest winning mark since 2012,” said de Ruyter.

‘Ste VoVo’, as he is affectionately known, Mokoka has made six appearances in the 21 years history of this competition. This victory now makes him the second man to have collected three wins in the race, following Ethiopia’s Gashaw Asfaw, who accomplished three consecutive victories from 2008 to 2010.

Dikwena gunned down

oretele Gunners secured all three points when they throttled Platinum Stars development team 4-1 in the ABC Motsepe League clash which was played at Temba Stadium recently.

Gunners went into the game following a 2-0 defeat to Glamour Boys. The home side dominated the match, which saw them claiming all three points on offer.

Letlhogonolo Kekana and Thabang Tlakama played vital roles on the wings, whipping crosses into the box. First shot at goal came off Daniel Mothoa’s boot in the 8th minute when he tested Star’s keeper with a long range effort;unfortunately, his shot went above the posts.

Tlakama should have punished the keeper two minutes later when he failed to collect the ball, but Star’s defence cleared the threat.

Oratile Setshwane led the attack for Dikwena after the first 10 minutes of the first half.

Setshwane was set to give Dikwena the lead in the 17th minute when his shot missed the goal posts by inches. Edia Ramotsho got the most important touch to deny Vincent Ramuhashe giving the visitors the lead.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 32nd when Daniel Mothoa’s outside the box shot gave the home side the lead. Obakeng Mandeu extended the lead three minutes later through a penalty kick after Dikwena’s Mpho Raphiri committed a handball inside the box. Gunners went to the break enjoying a 2-0 lead.
