ard 27 Councillor Lazarus Mashabela and a member of his ward committee on the housing portfolio, David Magaza have been sentenced to an effective three and five years imprisonment respectively by the Soshanguve Magistrate Court.

The duo have been found guilty of illegally selling stands in the area. The year long trial had been characterised by numerous postponements as a result of the defence team’s failure to attend court proceedings. The duo had initially pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them and said they were “politically motivated” to discredit their credibility.

Magistrate Alice Kruger said she viewed their actions as an abuse of position of power.

The state Prosecutor Mr. Smith had earlier stated that he had noted “discrepancies” in the testimonies of both Mashabela and Magaza during their cross examinations.

This comes after both the accused and their lawyer had contradicted themselves when stating the whereabouts of the alleged meeting in which the exchange of money had taken place.

ON THE contrary the accused lawyer has earlier dismissed the claimant’s assertion that she did not deem it necessary to require any proof of payment from both Mashabela and Magaza for the R 20 000 she allegedly paid to them for the stand.

“The complainant is a cashier and she knows very

well that for everything you buy you must get a receipt for it. I see no reason for her not to ask for it in this case. How can she buy a stand for R 20 000 and not enquire about the owner?” said the accused lawyer.

Smith labelled the charges as “premeditated,” in which both Mashabela and Magaza had abused their position of power and the trust by “targeting

people in need” and going as far as leaving on trails behind by not involving any witnesses nor issuing proof of payments for any transactions taking place.

“The accused have confirmed before this court that their duty is to help members of the community. By approaching Mashabela, the claimant was under the impression that she was going to get assistance she

required, since she viewed him as a trustworthy community leader. As a result the court accepted her claim that she did not need any proof of payment for the sales of the stand in question as she had never before had any doubt about the position he occupied,” said Smith.

The duo are set to appear in the same court for illegally issuing a Letter of Authority,

fraudulently transferring the estate of the late Vayisile Nkosi to Phumzile Khumalo.

The court has subpoenaed officials of the City of Tshwane Akasia to verify the authenticity of the said document allegedly issued by the accused. Sosh Times’ efforts to solicit comment from Tshwane Council drew blanks before going to print.

NW learners die in a horrific accident Staff reporter FOUR NORTH West learners have been killed after their mini bus taxi which they were travelling in collided with a speeding goods train at Ziniaville railway crossing line, East of Rustenburg in North West last week.

According to a statement released by the Department of Education Acting Director of Communication, Mr Brian Setswambung, the mini bus taxi was carrying 12 learners who were on their way home from school in Tlhabane township when the accident occurred.

One learner aged six died on the scene and two others were certified dead on their arrival at Job Shimankane provincial

hospital in Rustenburg, while one died later.

The mini bus stalled on the railway track and the speeding goods train smashed and pulled it to the side of the road until it was stopped by the power line pole.

North West education MEC Maphefo Wendy Matsemela was shocked by the accident and sent her message of condolences to the bereaved families. The MEC together with departmental officials from Inclusive and School Safety units have visited schools where the learners were attending to calm other learners.

The department will also dispatch a team of counsellors to counsel learners from where the deceased were attending.

Meanwhile, North West Premier Thandi Modise has called on drivers involved in scholar transport to appreciate that the lives of their passengers are precious and drive with extreme caution. This follows an accident in which five people were injured in a crash involving a school bus and a bakkie on the R30 KlerksdorpVentersdorp road recently.

The male driver of the bakkie and a female passenger who were in the vehicle were seriously injured. Three learners who were in the bus that was transporting 30 learners to school were also rushed to hospital with minor injuries.

Twenty-seven of the learners who were in the bus were transported to hospital

for counselling as they were in a state of shock. Premier Modise urged on road traffic management authorities to clamp down on speeding and reckless driving.

Elisha who was at the scene of the accident has instructed officials in his department to investigate the cause of the accident including the road worthiness of the school bus.

he May 7 elections will undoubtedly to a very large scale be one of the exhilarating features of the South African life. There can be no doubt that our fledgling democracy is coming of age as characterised by the mushrooming of all sizes and shapes of political parties that intend to contest the elections. While some of these parties are hardly known and it appears they will not make any significant impact in the political lives of many South Africans, some have made significant impact and their grand entry into the political landscape is making waves like Julius Malema’s Economic Freedom Fighters. Observers across the spectrum are putting their bets on the EFF and though they cautiously warn that this party will not unseat the Democratic Alliance as the official opposition, they readily put out their necks to indicate that that the EFF will certainly make a significant dent on the membership of other parties. Debates and speculations are rife that the most likely casualty would be the African National Congress which is bound to lose a large chunk of its youth followers to the EFF. However, this view may be dismissed by the ANC with a tinge of scorn as the organisation would rather prefer its denialism mode. Other interesting preelection developments are the movements of some disgruntled politicians out of their parties to their new political homes. Some of the reasons advanced by these politicians sound much like sour grapes because how can one walk the corridors of a party for periods varying from two to five years and criticise it for racism, nepotism, corruption or any other form of unsocial behaviour after such a long and obvious enjoyable stay. It is a well known fact that some politicians defect to other parties simply because they were not worth their salt in their organisations and therefore could not advance their ill conceived political career paths or were just seeking a party that is desperate for membership growth or a party normally conceived to be a get rich quick scheme which has no moral obligation when it squanders public funds. Sympathy must, however, go the most new comers on the political scene as well as some of the ‘old boys’ who have over the years failed dismally in their performances.

ANC Councillor imprisoned for corruption We wish to welcome the jailing of a corrupt Soshanguve councillor following a lengthy trial. This must send a strong message to his ilk who consider themselves to be untouchable. Some of these warped political dwarfs think they can do as they please and as rightly pointed out by the Magistrate; Alice Kruger who said that she viewed Lazarus Mashabela’s actions as an abuse of position of power. The clown’s claims that his accusations were politically motivated are laughable. Who in his right mind would plot the downfall of a man who is not known by the residents of Soshanguve? Most councillors are not popular in the areas they are supposed to represent because of their narrow and selfish behaviour which makes them look like some dreadful diseases by the community. Most ward councillors are known to be demented by wealth which they have accumulated through some dubious means which they never fail to flaunt it at any given moment. Mashabela and his co-accused are set to appear before the same court during next month for illegally issuing a Letter of Authority, fraudulently transferring the estate of the late Vayisile Nkosi to Phumzile Khumalo. It appears Mashabela is an unrepentant crook who rampantly squeezes unsuspecting people of their hard earned possessions and we wish him well on his journey to prison and hope that he will never, never again walk the corridors of public office.

Sharpeville massacre remembered - 54 years

THIS MONTH marks one of the saddest days in South African history. The month also brings into sharp focus the Sharpeville massacre of 21 March 1960 when the apartheid police mowed down 69 unarmed people and injured 18 others.

Sharpeville is no different from thousands of other townships in South Africa. But the name has become significant in the country’s history. Indigenous Africans were forcibly relocated to Sharpeville from a nearby town by the ruling white government of the day.

Under the repressive racist nationalist government Black people were forced the carry the loathed (dompas) identity document that restricted their movement in their own country.

For many South Africans, March 21 will always remain Sharpeville Day sometimes also referred to as Heroes Day. It was a watershed day in the country’s liberation struggle, hence the day’s inclusion in South Africa’s postapartheid holiday calendar.

The apartheid pass laws humiliated African men in particular. Every indigenous African male above the age of 16 had to carry the dompas on his person day and night and produce it on demand by the police. Failure to produce, forgetting the pass at home, or not having the right stamp, meant arbitrary arrest and jail.

More than 50 years on, the question still surfaces: what exactly happened on that fateful morning? Joe Tlholoe, one of the country’s most prolific journalists, who was a high school pupil at the time, wrote years later: “With hindsight, the story is simple.

The PAC [Pan Africanist Congress], which was 16 days short of its first birthday, had called on African men to leave their pass books at home, go to the nearest police station and demand to be arrested for not carrying the dompas.”

March 21 1960 was the

culmination of planning, public meetings and house-to-house canvassing by a young PAC that had broken away from the African National Congress (ANC) on 2 November 1958 and had its inaugural congress at Soweto’s Orlando Communal Hall between 6 and 8 April 1959.

Robert Mangaliso Sobukwe, a 34-year-old lecturer of African languages at Wits University at the time, opened the congress and was elected president. He spelled out the PAC’s policies and painted a picture of a South Africa after liberation that was non-racial, democratic and socialist.

In July that year, Sobukwe announced that the PAC would embark on a programme of “positive action” against oppression. In December he announced that the first target would be the pass laws.

Sobukwe led the march to Orlando Police Station, where he and the party’s leadership were arrested, just after they learned of the massacre in Sharpeville.

The journey to the recognition of basic human rights, now entrenched in the Bill of Rights in South Africa’s post-1994 Constitution, had begun in earnest. In the aftermath of the massacre, following the declaration of a state of emergency on 30 March 1960, thousands of black people were arrested throughout the country.

On 8 April 1960, the Nationalist Party (NP) government, under the premiership of apartheid architect, Hendrik Verwoerd, banned the PAC and ANC, forcing the two movements to go underground and eventually into exile. The days of peaceful protest, which the ANC and PAC declared, were over.

What would follow was protracted guerrilla warfare, the armed struggle against the “regime” waged by the two organisations. This would last 30 years, with the NP eventually forced into negotiations for a new dispensation with leaders

In December 1961, the ANC’s armed wing, Umkhonto weSizwe, detonated its first bombs.

Sobukwe, who was first sentenced to three years’ imprisonment at Robben Island for leading the anti-pass law protests, was kept in jail indefinitely under a special amendment to the General Laws Amendment Act – the Sobukwe Clause – which was rushed through Parliament.

Released from Robben Island and banished to Kimberley in 1968, Sobukwe was already ill, and died from cancer 10 years later. But the march for human rights and dignity continued.

In 1986, under heavy pressure, rightist president PW Botha repealed the pass and influx control laws which curtailed the movement of blacks in their country of birth.

The ANC-led government chose Sharpeville as the venue to launch South Africa’s new Constitution, signed by its first democratically elected president, Nelson Mandela, on 8 May 1996. Since then, a number of laws have been enacted to protect basic individual rights in South Africa.

Among these are pieces of legislation that significantly

provide for gender equality, and give citizens equal access to courts in the event of any form of discrimination.

Statutory institutions such as the Commission for Gender Equality, the Human Rights Commission, and the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural and Linguistic Communities, also now exist.

On 21 March 2001, South Africa unveiled the Sharpeville human rights memorial on the site outside the police station where the 69 men, women and children were shot - most of them in the back. Their names are all displayed on the memorial plaque.

Let us be pragmatically semantic

In our daily lives, the type of discourse we use includes the ambiguous use of words that we switch back and forth without properly acknowledging the convention and the association.

Conventionally, using a word means adhering to its core meaning, what it is known to be by everyone else for instance, the utilisation of the word “pen” conventionally means an object with which you write. This is the literal meaning of the word, pen.

However, association is

figurative meaning, context what you associate words with. For instance, a pen pragmatically can mean using the pen differently to what it is made for e.g using it as a weapon. This may not necessarily be the association for everyone but it is for some.

Another popular phrase that is used ambiguously in our townships is “double-up”.

Semantically this phrase means to add up or make more, while pragmatically it means to take a short-cut. When you want to say I am going somewhere far but it won’t take me long because I am going to take a short-cut. In townships we usually say “Ke a kgole mara ko tswa ka di double-up.”

Pragmatics are used in relation to the meanings of words, their usage is drastically different.

Learning the difference between these terms can help new language users avoid miscommunication and misunderstandings.

Semantic aspect of meaning refers to the meaning of words in a language and meaning within the sentence.

Semantics considers the meaning of the sentence without context, it is just the meaning that the grammar and vocabulary impart; it does not account for any implied meaning.

Pragmatic aspect of meaning is concerned with the interpretation of linguistics within context, basically making your own

understanding, disregarding the conventional meaning.

Similar to the way people do when they are speaking to their friends. If you are listening to the conversation, you will understand every word however you will struggle to make sense of the way they are using the words.

If you happen to be visiting in France one day and someone says you are their “bureau” then you should take offence because it is disrespectful, it refers to being someone they cheat with “side-partner” (pragmatically). However, if they tell you they are headed to their “bureau” then they are referring to an office.

A LOT of young people these days have access to motor vehicles, and it is unfortunate that we all go for our Learner’s licences and Drivers Licences and yet when an accident occurs we are still not prepared to handle it. A car crash can be a very traumatic experience and we do not always remember what we are required to do after it has occurred.

It is very important to know what to do, because this could save not only your life but the lives of the parties who are involved in the accident with you as well (Depending on the type of accident it is). • Determine the nature and extent of any injuries.

Assess the injuries you or your passengers may have, and call the ambulance.

• Help the injured if you are capable of doing so. Assist if you can, do not injure yourself further.

• Provide your name and address. To any person who has reasonable grounds for requiring them, such as the medical personnel assisting you on the phone.

• Remember to provide the accident to the police within 24hours and produce your driver’s licence. If this was not done at the scene of the accident.

• Do not take Intoxicating liquor or narcotic drugs unless medically administrated.

• If you do not stop after you have been involved in an accident, you may be prosecuted.

“A TB test, treatment War against Cervical Cancer and cure for all”

E

very year, the world commemorates Tuberculosis (TB) Day as a symbol to build public awareness that TB today remains an epidemic, causing the deaths of nearly one and a half million people.

The main aim of World TB day is raise public awareness of tuberculosis and the efforts made to prevent and treat the disease. Organisations such as World Health Organisation (WHO) promote and hold this commemoration on the 24th March each year.

The 2014 TB theme is “Reach the three million... A TB test, treatment and cure for all” This came about after the realisation that no one should be left behind in the fight against TB if the world wants to sustain its target of zero TB deaths What is TB? Tuberculosis (TB) is an infection caused by bacteria that can spread through the lymph nodes and bloodstream to any organ in your body. TB is most often found and affects the lungs (pulmonary tuberculosis).

Disease TB is contagious as the bacteria causing it can be transmitted through the air.

Meaning it spreads from person to person.

A person needs to inhale

TB can be cured. The treatment involves taking antibiotics for a period of six months. If the treatment is not taken according to prescription, the TB bacteria will re-surface as Multi-Drug Resistance (MDR) meaning new set of antibiotics is required. And again if patients do not finish the MDR treatment, the TB virus will come back as Extreme-Drug Resistance (XDR).

MDR and XDR TB develop when patients with TB stop taking their medication before the disease has been fully removed from the body.

These types of TB can also be transferred to others.

By Mamikie Masoga THE MINISTER of Health, Dr. Aaron Motsoaledi, has officially launched a free Human Papilloma Virus vaccine, which is set to be provided to all grade four girls between the ages of 9 and older in all government and special schools.

According to a statement released by the Department of Health, the learners will receive two doses this year, one in March and April and a followup dose with be administered in six months time, in September and October.

The aim of this vaccination is to protect school girls from the deadly strains responsible for about 70 % of all cervical cancers death in their stage of life.

Cancers of the cervix are the second most cancers among women in South African and they are caused by the human papilloma virus (HPV).This campaign is launched to prevent the enormous deaths caused by

“Since we have vaccine for HPV, let us help one another to fight cervical cancer,” said Motsoaledi.

Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) is a common virus spread mostly by sexual contact. Almost all sexually active people will contract this virus in their lives.

Some strains of HPV can lead to cervical cancers. The department of health chose this age group as it is more unlikely to be sexually active at this stage.

“Virtually all sexually active people will at one time in their life be exposed to Human Papilloma Virus. We also chose this age (nine year and older) because we know that these are least likely to have started sexual activities,” added the minister.

Motsoaledi stated that although the vaccine is expensive, but the Health Department is determined to provide all girls with the vaccination free of charge. It is estimated at R700 and R1000 per person.

By Thabiso Mosima DIALA ENTERPRISES is a micro business that has over the years championed the fight against unemployment, poverty and inequality in the community it operates in.

Founded in the late nineties by husband and wife, Mr. Gendo and Ms. Lindi Kganyego, Diala Enterprises has put a warm meal on the tables of many families. Having moved from the Pretoria Central Business District (CBD) were it has been operating from its inception and settled in Soshanguve, Extension 5, Diala Enterprises employs over twenty locals.

Each one of the employees is paid daily and according to the work he/she does at the food selling business. Having started with only two employees, today Diala boast a total of 15 permanent staff members and from time to time hires the services of part time helpers. Diala Enterprises specializes in selling cooked African delectables such as tripe and intestines (mala mogodu), meat from a cow head (nama ya tlhogo), hooves (tlhakwana) and locally bred chickens (Kgogo ya Sesotho).

As variety to the three footed black pots, they also have a fast food outlet which serves Fish and chips, Township burgers (Sphahlo) and a butchery which caters for those who crave braai meat or boerewors.

“Our staff members each have specific duties they contribute in

the three segments of our business. The people we hire on part time basis help us with cutting the cow heads, slaughtering and removing the feathers from chicken as well as cleaning the tripe. All of them get their payment at the end of the day and also take home all the left over food at the end of each day,” said Lindi Kganyego.

“We pride ourselves in been in the forefront of community activities as well as taking care of the people in need. We as a business also help out whenever we can for instance, give some groceries to a few child headed families. Our aim is not only to make money in the community we operate in but also help out as much as possible,” added Kganyego.

When asked by Sosh Times what was the secret or recipe behind their success, the Kganyego couple just smiled and said “It must be our 11 carefully mixed spices which will give you a “dik eet” feeling”.

Environmental impact of coal mining on land

he environmental impact of the coal industry includes the consideration of issues such as land use, waste management, and water, air pollution caused by the coal mining, processing and the use of its products. In addition to atmospheric pollution, coal burning produces hundreds of millions of tons of solid waste products annually, including fly ash, bottom ash, and fluegas desulfurization sludge that contain mercury, uranium, thorium, arsenic, and other heavy metals.

There are severe health effects caused by burning coal ,coal particulates pollution are estimated to shorten life. Coal mining generates significant

additional independent adverse environmental health impacts, among them the polluted water flowing from mountaintop removal mining.

Coal mining has been a very dangerous activity and the list of historical coal mining disasters is a long one. Underground mining hazards include suffocation, gas poisoning, roof collapse and gas explosions. Open cut hazards are principally mine wall failures and vehicle collisions. More coal miners have been killed in accidents over the past century and more people are dying.

Strip mining severely alters the landscape, which reduces the value of the natural environment in the surrounding land. The land surface is dedicated to mining activities until it can be reshaped and reclaimed. If mining is allowed, resident human populations must be resettled off the mine site; economic activities, such as agriculture or

hunting and gathering food and medicinal plants are interrupted.

What becomes of the land surface after mining is determined by the manner in which the mining is conducted. Usually reclamation of disturbed lands to a land use condition is not equal to the original use. Existing land uses (such as livestock grazing, crop and timber production) are temporarily eliminated from the mining area. Highvalue, intensive-land-use areas like urban and transportation systems are not usually affected by mining operations. If mineral values are sufficient, these improvements may be removed to an adjacent area.

Strip mining eliminates existing vegetation, destroys the genetic soil profile, displaces or destroys wildlife and habitat, alters current land uses, and to some extent permanently changes the general topography of the area mined. Adverse

Dust degrades air quality in the immediate area, has an adverse impact on vegetative life, and constitutes health and safety hazards for mine workers and nearby residents.

Ward 34 DA chairperson defects to the ANC

s. Brenda Matlala, former Chairperson of the DA in ward 34 in Soshanguve said she has defected to the ANC, together with about fifty other DA members from different wards.

They were paraded in an election campaign held in Ga-Rankuwa recently in the presence of ANC President Jacob Zuma. The move comes after two DA councillors defected to the ANC, namely Mr. Sam Moimane and Mr. Sello Maila.

The two councillors were in the Tshwane City Council.

In social network messages Matlala said this about her defection; “I left the DA because it is using activists for their own good. There is a lot of nepotism, racism and dictatorship within the DA. They use black people to get seats in parliament. Activists are only good for campaigns, not for positions.”

“There is still racism in the DA. I feel a pity for the new members who have just joined the DA. I wish they could see what the DA is after and resign while there is still time to do so.

We were fooled by the promises they have made to us. That is why I decided to go back to the ANC, to fight the corruption from within and preserve the real culture of the ANC in our communities,” added Matlala.

ANC ward 34 councillor, Ms Rosemary Ngobeni could not confirm that Matlala is now a member of her party.

“This is news to me. I know her to be still in the DA. The person I know to have defected from DA is Councillor Maila and Moimane, who were also introduced to the Tshwane Municipality Council. But one cannot have two parallel membership,” said Ngobeni.

Both Maila and Moimane confirmed that Matlala has defected to the ANC together

with some fifty other members and who have still to be introduced to their different wards by the province. In a conflicting telephonic message Mr. Phumzile Hlatshwayo, who is Soshanguve ANC Whip, said the defected members will only qualify to be full members of the ANC after two months.

DA Member of Parliament and leader of the Soshanguve, Mabopane and Winterveldt constituency Mr. Stevens Mokgalapa in a telephone interview with Sosh Times refuted the notion that about fifty people from the DA were paraded at the Ga-Rankuwa ANC election campaign.

Mokgalapa described Matlala as a disgruntled member of the party who lost chairmanship of the ward after she was voted out.

“The defection did not take us by surprise and to us it is not a problem. She has been inactive for a long time. We are not much

We do not know of the fifty people who have left DA. It was about five people who were paraded and they are her close friends,” said Mokgalapa.

“How can she defect with fifty people, when she failed to recruit half of that during her

term in office. Her defection does not leave a dent to our operations; in fact it is a nonissue. We wish her well in her endeavour,” added Mokgalapa.

“Politics are a voluntary game. You join or leave at random. No one puts a gun on your head,” said Mokgalapa.

Minister and unions sign agreement

he Minister of Public Works Mr Thulas Nxesi together with representatives of National Education Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) and Public Servant Association (PSA) entered into concurrence, when they signed a National Framework agreement (NFA) at the department Head office in Pretoria recently.

The primary aim of the agreement is to put in place agreed procedures to govern the process of turning around and rebuilding the National Department of Public Works.

Also to regulate the process and define the roles that parties will play in the turnaround.

The Minister said, “In part the NFA seeks to address legitimate interests of the department of public works employees. Hence the agreement rests upon a number of important principles including the following; no job losses, the creation and protection

of quality jobs, meaningful and proper consultation and consensus seeking and skills transfer, training and capacity building of staff.”

Nxesi further stated that “The parties enter into this national framework agreement at the time in the history of our country when the challenge of managing a transformation process within the department of public works is upon us.”

“It is a time when the parties face the twin challenge of building and transforming the current national department of public works into a new department of public works,” Nxesi said.

In addition the parties’ record their commitment to create a patriotic public service culture within the department committed to ethical public administration, adherence to the rule of law and code of conduct and promoting effective mechanisms to reverse and prevent corruption and maladministration.

By Tshepo Marutha AFRICAN NATIONAL Congress Ward 37 Councillor, Mr. Sphiwe Montlha, has accused both the Democratic Alliance and Economic Freedom Fighters for instigating the three days public violent protest actions that recently played themselves out in the streets of Extension 12 and 13 Soshanguve.

He called the protest a “desperate ploy” by both parties to garner support ahead of the May 7th general elections. “The DA and EFF have shown us that they cannot lead. How can they irresponsibly lead violent protest actions in which they demand proper roads but at the same time destroy the very little facilities we have? Now we have to take the money intended for other projects and divert it into repairing the same facilities they destroyed,” said Montlha.

Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Public Order Policing (POP) tried in vain to disperse angry

protestors from barricading a portion of M17 South Road linking Soshanguve and GaRankuwa with burning tyres and rocks.

The protestors also barricaded main gravel road leading into the area with large stones. Police had to use Nyala to gain entry into the area. Numerous shops owned by foreign nationals were also looted and passing cars damaged.

Montlha poured cold waters over the protestor’s main bone of contention, suggesting the City of Tshwane has turned a blind eye on the Memorandum of Demand, which they handed over to the Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Finance, Ms. Dorothy Mabiletsa in December.

“The Mayor of Tshwane Kgosientsho Ramokgopa has during the Mayoral Imbizo reiterated the council’s committed to tarring roads in Region 1. The region consolidates both Extension 12 and 13, work will commence

after the allocation of budget for the next financial year,” said Montlha.

One of the protestors who did not want to be named said they were tired of mucky roads in the area; “During rainy days it is even difficult for taxis and busses to enter the area as they get trapped in the mud. We always have to wear shopping bags to cover our feet just to navigate around the mud”, she said.

The Chairperson of the DA in the area, Mr. Phidus Bokaba, refuted Montlha’s suggestions that the DA coheresed with the EFF to lead the protest as a lie.

“The fact that there were two or three people in DA t-shirts does not mean that we are part of the protests. During the protests we were on a doorto door campaign rallying support for the party ahead of the elections,” said Bokaba.

Romans leave it late to conquer Stars

t was the war of “Stars” at Giant Stadium when Roman Stars outshone All Stars with two late goals to ensure a victory in a Super league encounter.

Roman Stars came out all guns blazing and forced the All Stars keeper into daring saves. Romans Stars got three successive corner kicks that mounted pressure on the Block W outfit in the early stages of the match.

Romans Stars hit the post from a set piece and continued to pile pressure on their opponents with their waves

of attacks. But their fire in the belly resulted in a caution for their star performer on the day, Innocent “Laffor” Simali. The game went into the water break at goalless dead-lock.

All Stars came in the second stage of the game with more intent and made the match worthy of being called a ‘match of two halves’ with each team dominating each half.

They created more chances and seemed to pack the midfield as they substituted an out of form striker with midfielder with pace.

The Romans stood strong and when it mattered most, they got a goal in latter stages of the

match, with Tshepo Mashau ripping through the heart of the All Stars defence and putting one in the back of the net. The stellar performance of Simali resulted in a goal in the last stages of the game to earn his team a much needed victory.

David Seanego, coach of the Romans said; “We need to come up with a different pattern of play because it seems like they found out and knew how we were planning to play, with a flat three at the back. Good game and a nice win for us.”

The assistant coach of All Stars, Sgo Chauke, said that they regret ousting their striker;“We made a costly

decision of taking out a striker for a faster player. Because he was not making the necessary

runs and that cost us the game today,” he said.
