Taxi deal turns sour

Story from Page 1 By Tshepo Marutha

T

shwane Metro has been left with an egg on its face almost a week after chaos broke out in Hammanskraal as thousands of stranded taxi commuters turned against operators who had in turn taken to the streets to vent out their frustration over the City of Tshwane’s Bus Rapid Transit network deal which minibus taxi owners in the area had entered into with the municipality. In an unprecedented move irate commuters damaged some taxis and set alight the association’s office. Member of the Mayoral Committee (MMC) for Roads and Transport in the City of Tshwane, Ms. Sheila Senkubuge, who led the talks with taxi operators could not shed light on the latest developments this week as the local taxi rank remains closed. This comes after taxi association operating along the Hammanskraal Rainbow Junction had entered into an agreement with the City of Tshwane following the introduction of A re Yeng Bus Transit System between Rainbow Junction and Tsh-

wane CBD. As part of the deal, taxi operators from Hammanskraal would drop off commuters at Rainbow Junction wherein they would board A re Yeng buses to various parts of the CBD. In the process taxi operators were compensated for the loss of revenue. MMC Senkubuge said they have set up a team of officials to resolve the situation. "We are engaging with relevant parties to try and get to the bottom of what could have triggered this. We are of the view that following the recent protest actions, a channel had been opened for us to engage with the various taxi associations in order to find lasting solutions. "It has since been brought to our attention that some taxi operators are not adhering to this agreement. We have been engaging with the operators to ensure that they meet their end of the agreement," said Senkubuge. She said she is confident that a lasting, mutually beneficial solution will be found in the best interest of providing an efficient, reliable, affordable and safe public transport service to residents.

Roots Butchery donates school bags to learners By Thapelo Masilela

A

philanthropic act by the Crossing Mall Roots Butchery in donating 260 school bags to the Grade 1 learners from Sinqobile Primary School in Soshanguve recently brought joy and celebration in the form of song and dance. The occasion was held at the spacious balcony of the school where the learners gathered to feast on delicious juice and sweets, as well as receive their beautiful school bags. On the school bags it was written “Back to school with Roots Butchery. It’s your first choice” Some learners displayed some posters with the message “Welcome to our school” The Manager of Roots, Mr Jose Ponte said felt at the top of the moon to have interacted with the learners and there is a great need to accommodate those who cannot afford the little things in life. “It is important to provide for their needs. Sinqobile is just next to our shop at Sosh Crossing, they are our neighbours. It is said that charity begins at home, which means before we can accommodate our customers from far, it is better to start with the ones nearby,” said Ponte. Ponte was in demand amongst the learners as he was helping them to fasten the school bag belts which usually hang from the shoulders. The learners were standing in a queue waiting for their turn to be attended to and Ponte was delighted to serve

Learners from Sonqobile Primary School showing the backpacks they received them. The Principal of Sinqobile Primary School, Mr Lucky Manzini said the dream of establishing a relationship with Roots has been accomplished after knocking at their door for a very long time.

“I have wanted to create a relationship with Roots for a very long time. I am happy that this has ultimately come through. Since the year 2015 we have been trying to reach them but to no avail. I think this is a start of greater things to come,”

said Manzini. According to Manzini; “The school has enrolled 1500 learners for the year, with a staff of about 40 teachers and 35 classrooms. Most learners are from the impoverished areas of Soshanguve Extentions and the

Mighty Kings win NW Provincial 2018 Games

Thabo Mooke

T

he provincial Department of Education and Sport Development set out to expose the latent sports enthusiasts through the annual North West Provincial 2018 Games played at the North West University Sports Grounds (Mafikeng Campus) recently.

The games, soccer, netball, cricket and rugby, were played in a round robin format. The netball outfit, Mighty Kings, from Mogegelo Village near Hamanskraal, scooped the number spot of the provincial championship title. In soccer, Letlhabile United obtained first position. The eliminations started last September at various

venues. MEC for Education and Sport Development, a soccer enthusiast, Sello Lehari, said the games were a platform to showcase sport development. “The North West Games project is geared towards affording an opportunity to all members of the community to participate in sport and keep the nation active irrespective

Two-horse race for ABC Motsepe honours

THE RACE TO being crowned champions of the Mpumalanga ABC Motsepe League is fast entering into the closing stages with the title chase becoming a two-horse race between North West based outfit, Buya Msuthu and Polokwane City Rovers. With both teams tied on 36 points, Msuthu hold a slight edge over their rivals who have played two more games than them. Rovers dropped two vital points in the title race after a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Mathosana United while Msuthu put up a solid performance at home with a 3-1 thumping of Platinum Stars Development to keep the pressure on Rovers. Third placed, FC Palmeros, still have a

mathematical chance of finishing top and their 2-0 away win over AC Milan keeps them in contention for the title should Msuthu and Rovers drop points. Meanwhile, Glamour Boys had to dig deep against a spirited Thaba Tshwane FC to grind a vital 2-1 victory which gave them a bit of a breather from the relegation battle. Glamour Boys are not entirely out of danger as only six points separate them from bottom of the log, AC Milan who are rooted at the pit with five points. Phatsima All Stars’ 5-1 drubbing at the hands of Marauding Classic keeps them down in the relegation battle as the season nears it’s conclusion.SAFA.NET

of affiliation. Its main reason is to allow non-affiliated clubs to participate in the mainstream federation structures wherein the participants will benefit in the broader development of organised structures,” said Lehari. He said his department was thrilled by the participation of young people in sport rather

than involved in social-ills like taking drugs and other activities bordering on criminality. He also said the primary objective of his department was to encourage healthy life styles and prevent diseases like sugar diabetes, stress and high blood pressure.
