MANAGER'S MESSAGE

As we end summer and the kids return to school, I would like to thank all the families that participated in this summer’s Kids Entertainment Camp at Palmetto Hall.

We had on average between 10-15 kids each week and the feedback has been very positive. Parker and Kati did a great job running the golf clinics on Tuesdays and Thursdays and the food and beverage staff embraced serving lunch and snacks each day. The club is already in talks to welcome the camp back next year and make this an annual tradition. I would also like to thank Camp Director, Alton Murray, and his team for making the camp enjoyable for our campers.

Please mark your calendars for Wednesday, September 20 for our Member Meet and Mingle. Come socialize with old friends and make new ones as we highlight recent new members to Palmetto Hall. A representative from every “club within a club” will be on hand to answer any questions including the Men’s and Ladies Golf Associations, Palmetto Hall Women’s Club, Tuesday Troupe, Racquet Sports, Bridge, and Mah Jongg. Enjoy Hors D’oeuvres from Chef Mick and his team, a complimentary wine tasting, and background music by Lavon Stevens. Reservations are required and can be made on the member portal.

Lastly, the club calendar on the portal has been updated for the remainder of the year. Please check it out and make plans to join us as we move into the fall and do I even dare to say “the holidays!"

TURF TALK

As we near the end of the dog days of August, it’s time to start thinking about putting out your fall pre-emergent herbicide.

A pre-emergent herbicide is designed to provide a “blanket” over your turf to help prevent those pesky winter weeds. One major problem in turf is Poa Annua or annual bluegrass. The fall is the optimum time to apply a pre-emergent to help prevent this pesky weed. It can germinate in late summer when soil temperatures drop below 70 degrees.

A few more helpful tips to help prevent are: 1. do not over-water your lawns as annual bluegrass likes moist areas, 2. do not compact your soil through traffic where possible, 3. aerify your lawn to reduce soil compaction as annual bluegrass grows well in thin, compacted areas, and 4. maintain dense turf through fertilization, overseeding, and weed control (crabgrass and broadleaf weeds).

These are just a few tips to help prevent this annoying turf weed. On the golf course, we will begin applying ours in September and will make more 2 more applications stretching all the way until December. As always, hope to see everyone on the course, and with college football starting, Go Vols!

PARKER'S POINTERS

The last few months have been oppressive for sure. As a result, many of us have not played golf with the regularity or frequency that we did in the spring. As the cooler weather slowly returns and we take again to the course, it is most noteworthy to follow a 3-step process to be successful.

Firstly, the physicality or body conditioning. If you haven’t played often or recently, take a bit of time prior to the round to stretch a bit. This can be done even a day ahead of your play day. It doesn’t need to be a full-on yoga experience but should include some light lunges, toe touches ( or as close as you feel comfortable), and a feet-together turn from the waist drill. This is a good practice prior to every round, but for the rusty, it can save some discomfort and promote better scores.

Secondly, speaking of rusty, one of the main things to deteriorate during a downtime is one’s timing. The backswing, transition, and downswing all need a certain timed orchestration to be successful. A neat trick is to think of a 3 to 1 ratio, backswing to downswing. A good audible cue to reinforce this is my old chestnut, “Savannah Quarters”. Say Savannah as you take away the club and swing it to the top position, and Quarters on the way down to impact. The trick is not to start down until you're done saying Savannah. Regaining that sense of timing is a great foundation to rebuild the rusty swing.

PARKER'S POINTERS

Thirdly, cut yourself a break. It’s been hot, hot, hot! You haven’t played very much. Set realistic goals for the first few times back out with regularity. First round, concentrate on shots, not scoring. It is much more rewarding to remember a few well-struck irons or drives, perhaps some bomb putts than to lament over a blowup scorecard. Second round set sights on a few target holes you wish to conquer, and if you don’t, were there any good shots along the way? Set yourself up for success with a good attitude and positive motivation.

Enjoy the early autumn, the course, your friends, and your club!

See you on the greens!
