President's Message

Both the heat and vacation travel have contributed to lower play in our sanctioned Golf groups last month. Perhaps the recent solicitations from the Early Birds “Come Sweat with Us!” best sums up the recent “dog days” of summer. I am looking forward to cooler weather and to our non-resident members re-joining us over the

next couple of weeks for an exciting lineup of events including the Ryder Cup and Golf Member-Guest (Sept.) and Tennis Member-Guest (Oct.).

The recent heat even had “Sophie,” resident member, opting for the cart plan!

Guy Suchy, Golf Chairman, and his committee have been working with Heritage to tee up this year’s Invitational slated for Sept. 21st through 23rd. I hope to see you at this premier event!

Although the board decided against posting member pictures and comments from their various vacations -- I think the prize for best escape goes to Wes and Judith Warren with an extended August holiday in Greenland and Iceland. To hear more about the exciting things members are doing off-island – come join your fellow members for happy hour and dinner.

Thank you to Anne Gerth, the social committee, as well as Jim Henington, Chef Curtis, and the staff for a wonderful Asian night! The food and set-up were excellent! We really have a hidden gem in the Robber’s Row Grille. So, invite your neighbors and come on out and enjoy.

As I am rounding the ¾ pole and headed down the final stretch of my term as president, it has been such a privilege to serve with such energetic and dedicated volunteers. It truly is the members who serve on the social, golf, racquet, and supporting committees that make the club viable. THANK YOU for all YOU DO! We know you have the talent, so if you are interested in getting more involved – please reach out to Jim Walker, current Vice President, or any of the current board members

Golf Report

Greetings… As I started to write this month’s report, I was struggling with what the topic should be

I could write (again) about the Heritage Member-Guest Invitational. There’s a strong turnout for the Men with 29 teams out of 30 signed up as of now.

(Unfortunately, as I write this, No Women have signed up to play in the event.) For the Member-Guest, we have a great event planned with food, beverages, games of chance (golf is one of them), prizes, dancing, and did I mention food? No, I’ve talked about the tournament in two prior articles, what else is there?

I just finished reading Dave Renbarger’s excellent recap of the final regular season match for the Men’s Summer League (MSL). The playoffs start this week! Maybe I should detail how awesome the Spring and Summer seasons have been and how much interest and fun the leagues have generated. I know, however, that John Strasburger will talk about the MSL in his write-up, so there might be something else for me to touch on.

Before I move on, let me say that Dave Renbarger, a k a “The Commish,” is a fantastic, funny writer and deserves to be put on a pedestal somewhere for the outstanding recaps he has done for the league And for the Early Birds, Steve Riley and his band of backups (Landon Gates, Tony Ponturo, and Tom Sheahan), do a phenomenal job as well. And we get to read about Early Birds antics three times a week versus Renbo’s once weekly!

So then Jim Stauffer and his backup (Carl Nelson), should also get recognition for the weekly recap they do for the Saturday Member Tee Group. We are going to need a pretty big pedestal for all these guys

Now, let me write about the upcoming Port Royal Ryder Cup in September Over 50 Men participate in the pre-match steak cookout and then break into two teams of 25+ players each to battle it out for two days on the courses. Wait, John Stras will probably talk about this in his article also. He might even have pictures of the awesome red or blue hats we get…

Golf Report

I know, I’ll share info about the Early Bird “Friendsgiving” dinner in November. This is a special event with players and spouses that celebrates memorable achievements throughout the past year. The love and laughter in the room in the past have been unparalleled and I expect nothing less than the same this year. Okay, but I probably should wait until November to talk about Friendsgiving and then I can include pictures too.

I got it! I’ll talk about the Men’s Golf Committee, chaired by John Stras and including Bud Henry, Dennis Darling, Ernie Marsico, and Dave Renbo - and also sitting in Nigel Jones (Past Chair) and Ron Tucker (Rules and Regs Chair) and including Charlie Duncan (Course Superintendent) and Jay Rusch (General Manager), with special appearances by Dave Donnelly (PRPC President), and yours truly as a hanger on. These guys go unrecognized and are underappreciated and underpaid, but do a great job for the Club…

If there’s a theme to this month’s article for me, maybe you’ve picked up on how much we have going on for the Men now. At Port Royal, we have an amazing Band of Brothers and I feel extremely fortunate to belong to such a club. I hope you feel the same way! Next month, I’ll talk about the Ladies!

Till next time, Guy

Men's Golf

Super Men’s Day

We had a strong turnout of 40 players for our August Super Men’s Day. We played a very challenging “StepBack” scramble. This format started all teams at the

black tee markers. Depending on the scoring per hole, teams would (a) stay at the same tee markers if they scored a par, (b) move forward a tee if they scored a bogey or worse, or (c) move back a tee if they scored a birdie or better It did not take long before most teams had stepped back to the “tips” (Gold tee markers). This really gave players a much different look off the gold tee box as well as the opportunity to tee off with a different club. Imagine hitting a driver on a Par 3 . . . well, that’s exactly what I did on Barony #2 when we stepped back to the Gold tees. Scoring was very tight with most teams coming in with a best ball net score between 58 and 60 strokes.

A big congrats to the winning team of David Jenkinson, Rick D’Arienzo, Ken Gerth, and long-ball specialist Dave Donnelly. These guys shot a net 58 –mostly from the gold tees!

With a 4-0 Match-Play record, congrats also goes out to the Designated Drivers

(DD) for finishing the Summer match play regular season in 1st place. Securing a spot in the postseason finals, the DD team now awaits the playoff outcome between (2nd place) Bud Henry’s “chBUDINSKIS” and (3rd place) Dave “Renbo” Renbarger’s “Bushwood Gophers”. Captain Rick D’Arienzo has been impressed by the stellar play of DD’s two rookies: Bruce Dumler & Doug Myer-Cuno.

THE MATCH FINALS:

The Designated Driverz were not to be denied.

Men's Golf

The Driverz successfully defended their Port Royal Men's League spring title on Friday, August 25th, capturing the Summer Season Championship with a 19-17 victory over the chBUDINSKIS in a riveting, roller-coaster of a match on steamy Barony.

"I couldn't be more proud of our guys," said Driverz captain Rick D'Arienzo during the post-match celebration. "We kind of had a target on our backs this season, but we kept on plugging and won every match. Today's match was remarkable and could have gone either way Hats off to Bud Henry and his team "

Indeed, the final match was an instant classic, with chBUDINSKIS captain Henry putting on a clinic in the first foursome. Bud carded four birdies en route to a sterling 75, yet it wasn't enough to wrest the title from the Driverz

Congratulations to both teams and many thanks to Commish Renbo and all 30 of our league players for participating in such a successful season.

Big smiles for the big winners: John Strasburger, Jeff Clary, Rick D'Arienzo, and Doug Meyer-Cuno. Not pictured are teammates Dennis Darling and Bruce Dumler. No doubt, these crazy and swaggy DD guys got game.

Men's Golf

With a quick look at the YTD leaderboard, you can see why Lanny Bailey is our YTD Champions Cup Point Leader.

No tellin’ how many more wins Brad & Chuck would have if they lived here yearround Bud Henry teams up real well with the Pros

Holers

The PGA and amateur golf have been trying to devise ways to speed up the game. Many of the new rules are designed to do exactly that! One of

The best is being able to leave the flagstick in so a golfer may line up and putt it sometimes before another player even reaches the green.

The pace of Play tips according to The Golf Channel Golf is such a sociable game and there is no need to rush but...

1. Be ready to play. In other words, play ready golf not only on the tee box but in the fairway Keep your pre-shot routine simple, one practice swing should be enough.

2. If there is any doubt that your shot is out of bounds, hit a provisional. Stroke and distance are the worst penalties in golf. The new rules say only 3 minutes to search for a lost ball. It is very important for all players to watch where all their playing partners' balls are headed.

3. Be mindful of the group in front and in back of you. Your group should be directly behind the group in front of you.

4 Do not wait in the cart for your partner Take a couple of clubs and walk to your ball. You can plan where you want to hit it while you are walking.

5. On the green, there is no need to mark every putt. If you have stroked the putt well and it is close go ahead and finish.

6. After putting out, wait to fill in the scorecard until reaching the next tee box. You may also get into the cart and wait until the next tee to replace your putter and chipping club to save time.

7. For those of us whose sand game does not resemble Jordan Spieth's, the new rules have 3 options; (1) play it as it lies, (2) move it back a club length for a

18

Holers

1-stroke penalty or (3) pull it out behind the trap for a 2-stroke penalty

These suggestions will not take an hour off the game but will help speed things up in our beautiful South Carolina summer.

Hope to see everyone at Sadie Hawkins on September 12th. This is one of the most fun days of the year!

Nine Holers

Welcome to our 40th member: Heather Nagle

Did you know that 9-holers get to participate in 9-hole exchanges? Exchanges are when another Club hosts a special 9-hole event and invites other Clubs to play in the event. For example, we have played at Dataw Island, Berkeley Hall, and Belfair to name a few. We will play a scramble format partnering with 3 ladies from other Clubs so the members are divided among the foursomes. You will ride and play 9 holes followed by a luncheon that will definitely have a fun theme. Port Royal hosted in 2021 and we had a fun theme of Alice in Wonderland, with a teacup and brightly decorated golf balls as our favors followed by a lovely luncheon

Please consider playing in one of the exchanges when Sally Ann Wormley sends out the invite email. If it happens to fill up quickly, Sally Ann will have a list of names for the next exchange event This gives everyone an opportunity to get a chance to participate.

We will be again hosting in 2024!

On September 12th the 18 hole ladies are hosting a Sadie Hawkins Day golf event. We are to ask a male member that is not our spouse and pay for their lunch and $10 for the prizes Everyone should have received an invite for this from me

On August 3rd only a dozen foolhardy ladies braved the humidity for our low putts competition. The results were very close.

1st place: Julie DeLaurence 15

2nd place: Nefeli Keebaugh 16

3rd place: Sally Ann Wormley and Nene Dreyer 17

Nine Holers

On August 10th, 10 ladies braved another day of excessive heat and Sue Walker and Joan Hazel WALKED!

1st Place: Mary Beth Strasburger 38

2nd place: Heather Nagle 39

3rd place tie: Judy Blahut, Sarah Fanjul, Sue Walker

Way to go ladies!

On August 24th, we played Throw Your Worst 2 Holes Out!

1st place: Nancy Sheahan 23

2nd place: Jackie Darling and Karen Simpson 24

Nancy Simpson chipped in on hole number 4.

Racquet's Up!

Member/Guest Tournament

The dates are October 20-21. Our program includes a sitdown dinner on Friday evening the 20th and a courtside continental breakfast and tournament play on Saturday morning. The tennis committee is working with Jim our F&B manager and our chef on creating a fun and delicious evening. An included cocktail hour, steak, seafood, chicken and vegetarian choices, and dessert and coffee/tea. Our courtside buffet breakfast includes a yogurt bar, fresh fruits, granola muffins, danish with coffee, Iced tea, OJ, cranberry juice, water, and Powerade.

This is our biggest event of the year for pickleball and tennis racquet members and we are looking to make this our largest one ever. Start planning and secure your guest co-player. We hope to have both men’s and women’s tennis at intermediate and high levels and pickleball at member request. (Women, Men, Mixed) If you are having trouble finding a partner, reach out to Dale or myself and let us know. We will get the word out to help you find a partner at your level.

Dale and the tennis committee are excited about the event. Look for flyers and sign-up information very soon

Court Resurfacing Soon!

The club is still on schedule to resurface our clay courts in the September / October time frame in time for our Member/Guest tournament. In keeping with Heritage’s desire to have best-in-class facilities we are hopeful of additional upgrades for nets and grooming tools for members to use after play.

Racquet's Up!

Dale’s Corner

A new recurring feature to this article will be our pro Dale Brown’s tips for members to improve your play. Today’s tip is on:

Shot selection:

If you find yourself at a point getting pushed back behind the baseline remember this general rule of thumb.

“The further behind the baseline you are the higher your shot needs to go back over the net!”

This will give you time to recover and be ready to regain the advantage in the rally.

Don’t forget to sign yourself and visiting guests up for Dale’s weekly clinics and round-robin play Check the site and the pro shop for dates and times

Follow Dale on Instagram and Facebook @tenniswith Dale.

Racquet's Up!

Court scheduling etiquette:

Our courts are very busy during the morning hours all seasons of the year. There is much enthusiasm for the earliest sessions during the summer heat months but as we welcome our part-time members back in the fall there will also be a great demand for early courts. Please remember to make sure we can get two sessions in before 12:30 on each court as you use Court Reserve Leagues will also be starting match play in the early afternoons so morning sessions become busier.

Also, please remember that if you have reserved a court and can no longer utilize it to release that court as soon as you are able to but no later than 24-48 hours before scheduled playtime. Having counts remain empty during the morning sessions when they could have been utilized by other members or resort guests is not desirable and the club has asked me to remind everyone Many clubs charge for “no-shows ” Dale and I would like to thank you for your compliance

Remember to warm up properly, stretch, keep hydrated, and stay safe out there. Above all HAVE FUN OUT THERE, keep your eye on the ball, and always be in the ready position!
