DOCTORAL GOWNS Marshal and Faculty gowns are the top choice for new graduates and distinguished faculty members. Both styles are designed to keep you cool and confident without sacrificing style or quality. Each gown is manufactured with machine-balanced fluting over the shoulders to provide a more comfortable fit. Both gowns are decorated with velvet panels and sleeve chevrons. To complement your Doctoral Regalia, the traditional choice is an 8-sided Black Velvet Tam. Doctoral Tams are also available in various degree colors and can be 4 or 6-sided.
The Mortarboard is light in weight and has a soft folding crown. A stiff-crown model is also available. The reinforced edges prevent any warping and provide extra durability. Available in exact sizes, the crown is quilted for added comfort and is the perfect choice to complement any academic regalia. Mortarboards are typically worn with Bachelor and Master Regalia with a black tassel. For degree recipients interested in a color other than black, degree colors tassels are available.

HOODS The Academic Hood is a symbol of your personal and academic achievement – the means by which your degree and the college awarding the degree are easily recognized. The size and shape of the hoods show the degree level with the Doctor being the largest, followed by the Master and the Bachelor. The colors of the satin lining are those approved by the college or university where the degree was earned and the color of the velvet border indicates the field of study.

ACADEMIC DEGREE COLORS The color of the doctoral gown trimming, hood edging and tassels are the colors associated with the academic discipline. These colors are in accordance with the Inter-Collegiate Costume Code as authorized by the American Council on Education. However, there are a few schools that may have established their own color code for certain degrees. Where there is a question, check with Herff Jones to determine what was used in the past or what may be an appropriate color to be used for a new degree.
