Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates Japanese-American unity: The special two-week period where the Japanese cherry blossoms are in full bloom is just around the corner. They will be on display during spring in Washington, D.C. The beautiful trees represent renewal and the short-lived life of nature, along with the arrival of the new season. The national flower of Japan began its history in the U.S. in 1972 when the 3,000 trees were delivered to our nation’s capital from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City. (See full story on page 12.)

Best Buddies “Kicks” off Sole Hope Project

The Hereford Best Buddies club is kicking off spring on the right foot—pun fully intended— by collaborating with Sole Hope, an organization that helps to bring work and footwear to impoverished communities.

Sole Hope aims to help the people of Uganda by providing work for those in the community.

They provide the supplies that the workers need to make footwear to protect against jiggers.

Jiggers are a parasite that infects the feet of those who contract it. A person with the disease often becomes unable to work and are many times shunned by their neighbors.

Members of the Best Buddies club are collecting denim and to send to Uganda through Sole Hope.

The collected denim will be cut into pieces by the members of Best Buddies and then sent to Uganda. Here they will be constructed by the employees into shoes and distributed to members of the community to help protect their feet against jitters.

“We’re going to cut the patterns out of the jeans and then they send them back to Uganda,” Shellie Powers, Best Buddies supervisor, said. “They then have the person put the shoes together, so it provides jobs for people over there while also providing shoes.”

The club is also collecting supplies to make care-kits to send to Africa along with the supplies for the shoes. These supplies include hygiene items such as tissues, band-aids, and antibiotic lotions.

Deciding to support this particular organization was an easy choice for the group.

“We try and pick something to do for other people because that’s the main idea of Best Buddies,” Best Buddies member Cassie Powers (‘19) said. “So when the idea came, we just jumped in with all of our helpful members.”

To be able to send the supplies overseas, Best Buddies needs the support of the Hereford community. They are actively looking for contributions, especially your old denim, to aid in their efforts.

“Basically, you bring in your old jeans, and they turn your jeans into shoes,” Best Buddies member Jane Clark (‘19) said. “So whatever old jeans you have, bring them in!”

To put together the care-kits, the group is also collecting hygiene items that the people in Uganda may need.

In addition to these supplies, Best Buddies is also accepting cash donations. In order to send the supplies overseas the club needs to pay a fee, so any cash donations would be happily accepted and appreciated.

If you wish to help out the Best Buddies Club and their efforts with Sole Hope, feel free to bring in any of these items or see a member or supervisor of the Best Buddies club for more information.

Administration debunks popular school mysteries

As an incoming freshman, you were probably told multiple rumors about high school, and it was probably difficult to filter them. Of course, there are the typical rumors such as the upperclassmen bullying the lowerclassmen and a secret pool that is only accessible by seniors.

Students like Josh Pouncey (‘22) believed there was a pool on the roof of the science building because of the back cafeteria steps that continue to ascend even after reaching the second floor.

“I heard at school that there was an extra house on the roof called the penthouse with a pool in it above the science wing,” Joe Lewis (‘22) said. “I asked about the pool and if it was true, but the teachers told me ‘no’.”

The penthouse is believed to have fancy curtains in the windows with plush furniture and other luxurious items. Some think it is located near the pool and others believe it is above the gym.

The small building that sticks up from the roof of the gym is unfortunately just a utility room that holds the boilers and hot water heater. Above the cafeteria is nothing but a pole that is a beacon for transportation that helps to identify where all of the buses are in the county.

The more unique rumors developed based on the quirks of the school.

Since Hereford is located in a more rural setting than other schools in Baltimore County, students and even teachers who are new to the area may have heard the myth that the school has tractor day(s) at school (#justherefordthings).

“When I first started here, which would have been 12 years ago, I came from a different school, too,” Principal Joe Jira said. “One of the myths that I had heard — that wasn’t true — was that kids had an actual parking spot out by the barn and they could drive their tractors to school in the morning.”

Before coming to The Zone, newest assistant principle Ashleigh Hickman heard that tractors were some student’s primary mode of transportation every day. Social studies teacher Sarah Crue thought there was a designated day for everyone to bring in their tractors and show them off.

Although students don’t drive tractors to school, in the past there was a showcase event on Saturdays of the farming community, which was sponsored by the Future Farmers of America organization, where students could flaunt their tractors. Additionally, the agriscience

department does own a tractor.

Many middle schoolers also misconceive one of the practice fields (most commonly known as the corn field) to be a plush field with perfectly manicured grass. If you’ve ever practiced on this field, you would know that this surely isn’t true.

A less famous rumor involves students who tried to cancel school by inducing a main water break by shooting out the water tower. Before the new science building was constructed, a water tower stood in its place. The metal was rusting causing holes and a weaker structure.

When the new water tower was built, it was constructed using heavy-plated iron to avoid any water breaks.

Lastly, one of the more popular rumors: the bomb shelter. Many students wonder if we actually have one. In the early 1900s when Hereford was built, only a few hundred kids were in attendance.

So, when they built the bomb shelter, they built it for a few hundred students, instead of a thousand like there are today. Currently, it is being used for utilities and storage. The shelter is located under the main office, library, and main hallway.

The origin of these rumors is a mystery since some of them have been around for over a decade.

“The seniors start everything,” Jira said. “Seniors always like to have oneup.”

Years from now, students and teachers may still be talking about the penthouse above the gym or the designated parking spots for our tractors.

“I think there is a mystique about Hereford and all of the schools in the Hereford Zone,” Hickman said. “People all over the county, even the southern-most areas of the county, when they’re watching the news and waiting for the schools to be closed, Hereford has their own exclusive zone.”

So, there you have it, folks. From rooftop pools, to tractor days, to bomb shelters, each rumor has been debunked. There is no pool, our tractor days have passed, and the bomb shelter is simply used for storage a n d other utilities. It’s time for some new rumors now.

For Our Troops collects books for soldiers

Joyce became president after being vice president as a sophomore and junior. She ran for vice president “to make an impact on the club and lead and organize with more responsibilities,” but she wanted to become President because she felt she had done a lot for the club and wanted to make the club as productive and efficient as possible, while being heavily involved with all aspects of the club.

Senior internships bring a unique way to flex on the competition

y this point we’ve all heard the rumors about how hard it is for students fresh out of college to find decent paying jobs.

Employers may say things like ‘six years of experience required,’ when obviously, as a 22-year-old college graduate, you won’t have six years of experience as an accountant— that’s why you’re applying in the first place!

Nowadays, if we want to stand out, we need more than the typical bachelor’s degree, which is why many Hereford seniors are participating in internships.

The internship program has been a staple of Hereford seniors schedules for years, but why are so many students deciding to participate in the program? What makes the senior internship program so enticing?

“I thought it’d be a good way learn outside of the classroom,” Bayly Cogan (’19) said. “It seemed like a good opportunity to get hands experience in the field I’m interested in.”

Ashley Thompson (’19) agrees. “I had room in my schedule and I wanted to do something challenging.”

According to internship coordinator Brett Baier, real world experience is only one of the potential benefits of participating in an internship.

“It’s helpful knowing prior to spending thousands of dollars on college whether the field you think you want to be a part of is what you actually want to do or not,” Baier said. “Finding out that it’s [the wrong career] can save you time, energy, and a lot of money.”

But the benefits go far beyond time, money, and experience.

“You learn a lot about the job itself and information pertaining to [the career], but you also learn people skills that you just don’t learn in regular classes,” Cogan said.

Some of the many companies and organizations that seniors are interning with this year include Fireaxis Games, St. Joe’s Hospital De-

livery Unit, Hereford Fire Hall, Jacksonville Veterinary Hospital, Hereford PT, Branchwater Border Collies and the Marcodi Musical.

While at first glance the internship program may seem completely isolated from school, according to Baier the program is well monitored.

“Every week [the students] write a Learning Log about their experiences and every month they turn in hour sheets from their internships,” Baier said. “I also visit their internship site each month so that I can talk to their supervisors.”

While the internship program has remained static over the years, one change came in Baier’s involvement with the program this year.

“After teaching French, Spanish, and Italian for 22 years I needed a change; doing internships and career readiness is rewarding,” Baier said.

So why participate in an internship senior year? It’s best to hear it from a primary source.

“Definitely go for it; it’s a great experience to get out of the classroom and get real world work experience in a field you enjoy,” Cogan said.

“I would highly recommend taking an internship everyday,” Thompson said.

Students compete in county wide Chemathon

Chemistry students from across Baltimore county gathered at Dulaney High School on Feb. 25 to compete against one another at the annual Chem-a-thon. AP chemistry students Tony Fedi (’20), Cecilia Millan (’20), Rebecca Meldron (’20), Gianna Patti (’20), Megan Spicer (’20) and Samantha Swope (’20) competed at the event.

The chemistry students took part in six events that tested their Chemistry knowledge. Fedi, Patti, and Swope won third overall out of 16 teams.

They also came in first place in the Battleship event, where they had to determine the density of different materials.

“I’m not sure where my interest for chemistry comes from; I just really enjoy the class and I think that’s what really matters,” Fedi said. “I also plan on pursuing chemistry in the future.”

To prepare for the event, the students made a poster about an AP chemistry topic and review main concepts and formulas.

“I have always really loved chemistry and AP chemistry allows me to see how chemistry will be in college since that is the major I am pursuing,” Patti said.

The six events included Bubble Bobble, Ping Pong, Clue, Guess Who?, Metal Gear Solid, Battleship, and Pictionary which used chemistry signs. The Baltimore County schools that attended the event were Carver, Chesapeake, Dulaney, Loch Raven, Perry Hall, Pikesville, and Towson.

Many of these AP Chemistry students had science teacher Charles Fluharty last year for GT chemistry.

These students wanted to continue taking chemistry at a higher level so they chose to take AP chemistry.

“I expect that they all have the ability to make a big impact on my team,” Fluharty said. “All of them have been in my classes for the last year and a half, and each of them do very well in class.” Fluharty said that all his students have been very enthusiastic about competing in the event.

Athlete of the Month:

Peterson looks to push Lady Bulls towards second consecutive state championship

Lacrosse season has started and returning captain, Isabella Peterson (’19), is about to begin her fourth and final season. Peterson is a two-sport athlete, dominating the lacrosse field in the spring and the basketball court in the winter.

To start her high school lacrosse career, she made varsity as a freshman and earned a starting spot. According to head coach Anne Ensor, this is her greatest accomplishment.

Peterson plans to continue her lacrosse career next year at James Madison University to compete at the Division I level.

This did not come effortlessly; her tenacity and strong work ethic in the off-season allowed her to gain this opportunity.

“In the fall, I work out with my trainer three times a week and work out on my own the other days,” Peterson said. “I work out [a total of] six days a week.”

During the winter, Peterson is a crucial part of the girls’ basketball team, but that doesn’t take away from training for her true passion: lacrosse.

“I go running before or after practice [during the winter],” Peterson said. “After I run, I do twenty minutes of wall ball as well as lift twice a week.”

As of last season, Peterson has 179 goals and 57 assists in her high-school career with a 4-point goal average per game. She is a starting midfielder and has a tremendous impact on the team, helping them become a 2018 state finalist.

“Bella is most impactful in the offensive zone and on the draw; she has been leading scorer for three years and takes the draw to gain possession,” Ensor said.

While keeping up with her off-season preparation, Peterson believes this upcoming team is capable of making it back to states and coming home with a win.

“Not only do we have the ability to go to states, but [we can] win,” Peterson said. “If we work hard and stay focused this season we will have the ability to do great things.”

Peterson doesn’t only impact the team during games; she is a natural leader off the field.

“Bella helps everybody and supports anyone who is struggling with something,” teammate Martha Kaestner (’21) said.

Although Peterson is not particularly superstitious, her pregame ritual is a signature handshake with teammate Libby May (’19).

After this one last season, Peterson will miss playing with her teammates the most.

“Some [of these girls] I’ve been playing with since elementary school,” Peterson said.

On the other hand, she is excited to start her journey at JMU. “I am looking forward to meeting new people and playing at a higher level,” Peterson said.

Peterson had a great impact on the team as a leader and will be missed next year.

New softball coach hopes to return Hereford to winning ways

As the spring sports season arrives, Ed Williams prepares to coach the girls’ softball team for the first time. He will be assisted by his daughter and Hereford High teacher, Whitney Williams.

His wife, Darla Williams, will be keeping record of player stats and scores.

Coach Ed, who began coaching softball when his daughter was around four years old, has continued his passion for the sport and instructing young players by coaching recreational programs, club teams, and college teams.

For the past four years, he has been umpiring for recreational softball and baseball teams, along with offering hitting and fielding lessons to any players who want to improve their game.

“I absolutely love everything about the sport,” Coach Ed said. “[I love] helping younger players to understand that they are better than they know.”

His coaching philosophy focuses on improvement. He wants his players to realize that they learn from mistakes and they learn from coaches that are willing to work with you. He would never yell at his players or express negative comments.

Holly Wilson (’20), last year’s JV captain, has had conversations with Coach Ed in the past and knows that he is extremely educated about the game.

“He is an awesome coach; he knows all about the game of softball,” Wilson said.

With a new coach, Wilson is excited about the start of the season and “hope[s] that [the softball team] can pull some wins.”

“The team is going to be good this year,” Wilson said.

In the summer, Coach Ed and his daughter, Coach Williams, play for a co-ed softball league.

“It’s real exciting to be able to play and now finally be able to coach with her at the high school level,” Coach Ed said.

Coach Williams said they both will be on the same page about strategy and technique. She hopes the girls have a positive experience, improve their skills, and have more wins than losses.

Coach Ed’s goal for the season is to win the county championship.

“That would be really nice,” Megan Spicer (’20) said. “It all depends on the effort the girls put in because I think that the coach will be there for us.”

Mikayla Foo (’19) said that with having a young group of athletes the team needs to have a better understanding of the strategy of softball. She is optimistic for the upcoming season.

“I predict that everyone will try their hardest and that the team will be motivated by our will to improve,” Foo said.

Figure skater Ryan Dunk becomes 2019 United States junior champion

Ryan Dunk (’19) is a student that is not currently studying at Hereford. Dunk has been taking classes online, so he can pursue a career in figure skating.

Dunk has competed at many events over the years, skating since he was eight years old, and has placed in the top of many of these events.

The figure skating competition circuit has separate divisions based off rank. Dunk saw success at a young age and continued it while he advanced through the ranks. Finishing top five at Intermediate, Novice and Junior U.S. National Championships and other international events, Dunk has proved time and time again that he is one of the best up and coming skaters.

Dunk placed third at the 2017 Junior Nationals and at the 2019 U.S. Junior Nationals he won the gold medal.

“I was very happy with how I skated and performed; my short and long programs went very well, and I was able to place first,” Dunk said. “I didn’t let my nerves mess me up and it was the best I had ever done at nationals, and I’m really proud of myself.”

Dunk put more time into skating this year while not attending Hereford, allowing him to perform at a much higher level than in previous years.

“I think this entire year I worked much harder and for many more hours during the week, so I was able to be more confident and rely on the work I did in practice when I competed,” Dunk said.

When creating a performance for something like Nationals, one must put a great amount of time and effort into finding the right song for a program, creating the choreography and choosing the right costume. Many skaters look for help of professionals, so they can focus more on practice. Dunk, however, puts the extra effort into completely understanding his programs, making them meaningful to him as well as a great watch.

“Ryan is unusual in the fact that he has always picked his own music, created much of his own choreography and had a lot of input in his costumes,” Ryan’s mother Terri Dunk said. “Last year I watched him and a professional choreographer create his programs in just a few sessions; it was an amazing process to watch them bring the program to life and I couldn’t believe what Ryan was doing.”

Ryan wouldn’t be where he is today though without the support of friends and teachers while preparing for his jump into the professional skating world.

“Each time Ryan did well in a competition we would watch a video of him, and we were amazed; we took a class picture, so we could say we knew him before he was famous,” Spanish teacher Tiffany Bibaud said. “Ryan is such a focused and determined kid, and it is thrilling to see him performing at his current

level; he has drive and motivation like few kids I know, and I’m so proud of him.”

“It’s crazy that someone we grew up with may be an Olympic athlete, and it’s incredible to see how much he’s improved in the last few years,” friend Emma Simon (’19) said. “I can’t wait to see him do even more incredible things.”

Even though Ryan won Nationals, the grind is not stopping.

He continues to train for future events. Ryan moves up to the senior level this year, the highest level in skating, so he is putting more time into it to prepare for tougher opponents.

“The skating competition season is over for me now, but practice doesn’t stop,” Ryan said. “I’m working on new programs and jumps, and for upcoming competitions, I have to wait until team USA makes the decision.”

These three women demonstrate excellence in unique sports

Over 80% of students are involved in at least one season of high school sports, with much of the population competing in three seasons of sports. Team sports are a huge part of the Hereford community; large crowds will come out to watch latenight football games under the lights or a Friday night basketball game.

In the past four years Hereford has accumulated seven state championships: four for women’s cross-country team and three for the women’s indoor track and field team, along with county championships in women and men’s lacrosse.

To say the least, the school excels at sports.

However, students who do individual sports outside of school, such as dancing, horseback riding, and swimming, should be recognized too.

Hannah O’Brien (’19) competes in pentathlons. A pentathlon competition includes five events: fencing, horseback riding, a 200-meter free-style swim, and a run shoot (two mile run with bow and arrow shooting every half mile).

“I started with tetrathlons, which is everything but the fencing, when I was eight years old,” O’Brien said. “I wasn’t very serious about it until about a year ago. That’s when I started pentathlons.”

O’Brien’s favorite part of a pentathlon is the horseback riding, as it is the least stressful, having known it the longest. “My mom says I rode a horse before I was even born,” O’Brien said.

Along with competing in pentathlons, O’Brien was also involved in indoor track and field her freshman, sophomore, and junior year, along with outdoor track and field her junior year.

Last year O’Brien qualified for nationals but injured her finger a week before the competition. However, this year she qualified both nationally and internationally, which means she can start competing in competitions in Europe and will compete at Nationals in Texas this summer.

Outside of school, Maria Karvounis (’19) is involved in Greek dancing.

“I started when I was in the fourth grade. It’s through my church so there are a bunch of different age groups. I started in the second youngest group,” Karvounis said. “Now, I’m in the highest group; we usually meet on the weekend and perform at festivals and we do one competition in January.”

Karvounis and her dance team compete in up to five competitions a year; common festivals they perform in are St. Nick’s and St. Demetrius. Every Friday night before a competition, they

have a three to four-hour rehearsals.

“I like hanging out with all my friends; there isn’t a lot of pressure to do well,” Karvounis said. We all know the steps so just a lot of fun it, but I also like performing.”

Kayla Reedy (’19) has been competitively swimming for 11 years. She has been swimming on the USA club team for nine years and on the York YMCA team for a total of six years.

“To be a good swimmer you need to create a strong mental representation of what good strokes look like by professionals so that you can replicate them,” Reedy said. “You have to be mentally and physically tough.”

The four main strokes are backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, and freestyle. Reedy’s favorite events are mid-distance freestyle events, such as the 200 and 500 free.

“Good swimmers know their goals and motivate themselves even through the ‘bad’ practices, knowing they can achieve them,” Reedy.

Reedy practices eight times a week. Each week, two of the practices are before school from 5:30-6:45 am. And she only gets a couple week breaks throughout the whole year-round season.

While Hereford has several impressive athletes, some of the most interesting ones succeed outside of school.

At first glance, the 2018-2019 College Basketball landscape appears to be dominated

by Duke University. While the Blue Devils are the favorite to cut down the nets April 8 in Minnesota, that is anything but a lock.

This year College Basketball has an exuberant amount of contenders, all talented enough to take home a championship. This ambiguity has led to a frequently changing Top 25 and primes us for one heck of a March Madness.

Duke is captained by Australian junior, Jack White, whose name is apropos to his game. He leads a fantastic group of four freshman, who have played their way into the good graces of fans globally. Zion Williamson leaves fans nothing short of awe-struck every time his 6’7” 270lb frame floats from the hardwood and achieves some ridiculous feat of aeronautical success. He is accompanied by future top five picks, RJ Barrett, Cameron Reddish, and Tre Jones. This plethora of talent makes Krzyzewski’s crew my title favorites.

North Carolina is the best candidate to dethrone the Dukies. Roy Williams is one of the most decorated coaches the sport has ever seen, and his Carolina squad came away victorious two short years ago. The Tar Heels are characterized by a frenetic game pace, hoping to speed up their opponents into turnovers and bad shot selections. They have the luxury of point guard Coby White, whose hair and effortless dribbling make the Heels must-watch television.

Outside of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) the Michigan Wolverines have a legitimate chance of being crowned kings of the hardwood Monday, April 8. Coach John Beilein has done everything but win the “big game” playing in the tournament final last year. While Michigan lacks the superstar talent that Duke and UNC have, the Wolverines are deep and

defensive-minded. The downfall of this team lies in their inability to put the ball in the basket during stretches of the game. But, with Beilein’s coaching expertise and overall team experience, it would come as no surprise to see the maize and blue with the scissors championship night.

Not far from Ann Arbor, there is another title contender who hails from East Lansing, the Michigan State Spartans, led by junior point guard, Cassius Winston.

The Spartans share the characteristics of many Tom Izzo coached teams: those who are defensive-minded, scrappy, and gritty. Izzo has experienced postseason success before, and his emphasis on rebounding enables his team to compete even when they lack sufficient talent.

Luckily for Izzo, this team has a plethora of it.

The South Eastern Conference (SEC) has two strong suitors as well. At Rocky Top, the Volunteers from Tennessee have one of their best teams in recent memory. Rick Barnes’ squad is led by “the perfect college forward,” Grant Williams.

Williams is a 6 foot 7 inch workhorse, who attacks the glass with the same tenacity as a bull chasing the commodore.

He has the capability to win a game on his own, while also making all of his teammates better.

To the North in Lexington, John Calipari’s Kentucky team is back again.

The Wildcats are led by a strong freshman class, with swingman PJ Washington stepping up to fill the early season scoring void. Freshman Tyler Herro has emerged as a

strong secondary scoring option and has helped Big Blue into title position.

Finally, the “cinderella” mid-major hails from the American Athletic Conference (AAC).

The Houston Cougars, led by combo-guard Corey Davis Jr are a legitimate threat to make noise this NCAA tournament. The Cougars did not lose much scoring from last year; where they lost at the buzzer to the eventual runner-up, Michigan Wol- verines. This puts Houston in a prime position to

dominate their competition and win March.

While filling out your bracket is not going to be an easy task, the ambiguity will surely lead to a madness-filled March.

Top XC Course:

The classic Hereford cross country course has been the home of the 1-4A boys and girls cross country state championship for many years. Emily Konkus (‘19) storms up the dip in the 2018 State Championship meet right before securing her individual title.

The dip consists of two 50-yard steep inclines that meet to make the hilly course one of most difficult on the East coast, rumor has it. Not only do cross country runners suffer the wrath of the infamous hill, but other sports team use the dip for conditioning purposes. #JustHerefordThings.

Cowbell: An old Hereford tradition, the cowbell’s song, is trying to be eliminated from sporting events recently. The loud cling was most present at the football games, being rung when a touchdown or strong play was made. However, the bell has been banned from football games and other sports games because of its intimidating qualities. Will the cowbell go extinct? #FreeTheCowBell. #JustHerefordThings.

Camouflage: The perfect article of clothing that blends in with the famous rolling fields and woodlands of Hereford is camouflage. The pattern is worn for occasions ranging from hunting, dirt-biking, and attending school. Sports teams order camo shirts to rock their spirit wear and love for Hereford.

There’s nothing like the old days of healthy rivalries where opposing teams would show up to play in camo, a type of mockery. But the bulls take pride in their attire. #JustHerefordThings.

The Hereford heifer:

Luna, the heifer (a young female cow that has not borne a calf), was brought to Hereford on Nov. 14, 2016. She lives in the pen next to the dip with the rest of the farm animals, including sheep, goats, and chickens.

Not every school gets to skip class to celebrate the arrival of a new farm animal, which students would soon be responsible for. She is still present at Hereford today, living her best life and supporting the bulls! #JustHerefordThings.

Follow Recent Parking Sticker:

Every year, the administration creates a new version of their parking sticker, which allows students to park in the lots at school, rather than at the track or on Bunker Hill road. Students can purchase a parking sticker for $15 to place on the bumpers of their cars, while the seniors additionally receive a vibrant-colored hang tag for parking privileges in the “senior lot.” When driving along York Road, you can’t miss the neon green and the friendly waves. #JustHerefordThings.

Hereford Days:

With snow pounding down on Baltimore County, the HZ feels a little extra love from the county when they consider school closures as a result of inclement weather. Hereford receives special cancellations, like delays and full days off, that exclude the rest of the county. While the rest of the county must make up for their snow days with additional days of school in June, Hereford receives no such punishment when a “Hereford Day” is issued. #JustHerefordThings.

Hillbilly Beach:

Hillbilly beach, a section of the gunpowder in the HZ, is used for fishing, kayaking, swimming, picnics, BayDays, or any kind of outdoor activity. Students find themselves jumping off the rocks into the cool Gunpowder River on any day of the summer. Trails line the water, allowing members of the community to hike, walk, or run to enjoy the rural features that the HZ is blessed with. #JustHerefordThings.

Gennessee Valley:

Gennessee Valley, an outdoor learning and living center, hosts summer camps, tournaments, and recreational activities on its multiple fields and grassy areas. The available space was once used for high school sports practices before the practice field was built adjacent to the turf. The extra field space is a huge help to Hereford’s recreational programs. #JustHerefordThings.

STUDIO SHOWDOWN: DISNEY VS. UNIVERSAL

too classic to ignore

Disney. Whether it be the parks, movies or characters, we all grew up loving it. Even in high school, I’m sure we’re all guilty of watching the occasional Disney princess movie or traveling down to the parks with our families.

I know some of you —the Universal fans— will say that Universal is more adult-friendly and that might be true. However, adult-friendly isn’t always the most fun. Universal Studios consists of three parks, and they’re all essentially the same in my opinion. Take a quick drive over to one of six Disney parks, or many other attractions, like Disney Springs. You’ll be able to spend a whole week in Disney world and still not ride every ride or see every attraction.

“The people that work [at Disney World] really make you feel like you’re in another world.” Francesca Viscuso (‘21), who has visited Disney World 15 times, said.

The whole Disney environment is stronger. Your trip from start to finish is orchestrated

by Disney. I know this sounds like an ad for the Disney parks and, well, it kind of is.

“It’s the rides, it’s the food, and the general atmosphere and the vibe is so happy.”

“Disney’s a holistic experience and it’s not just about the rides. Disney’s more aimed toward families; it’s fun for everybody.”

I would tell anyone to go to Disney World and I’m sure most of my friends could agree that it might be my favorite place on earth. To be fair, they would also say I’m basically an eight-year-old. The Disney franchise doesn’t

stop in Florida, totaling in over 12 parks internationally. While the latter, Universal has a disappointing three.

Behind the entertainment giant that is Disney is Pixar. Until recently, I couldn’t have told you which movies were produced by Pixar and which by Dreamworks. Post-research, movies made by these companies are the ones dubbed by society as “the classics.” I just want to make one point first: Pixar made “A Bugs Life” and Dreamworks responded with “Antz”, is that enough said?

Though Dreamworks has put out a few favorites like “Madagascar,” and “Shrek.” The new-age Pixar movies such as “Cars,” “Nemo” or any of the “Toy Story” movies on the other hand are always favorites. DreamWorks just can’t compare, especially with their sequels. If their goal was to ruin the original movie well then, mission accomplished.

Disney will not disappoint in 2019. Remakes of “Dumbo,” “Aladdin,” and the very anticipated “Lion King” will be released. The Toy Story franchise of Disney alone has four well-made movies to its name and a whole portion of Disney’s Hollywood Studios in Orlando.

Assuming you don’t want to stand in a crammed line all day to get a little peek of Harry Potter World, I would consider checking out Toy Story Land or any of the other Disney parks.

So, the next time you are having a hard time choosing a movie, or a vacation, remember who you grew up watching. Nemo will top any knock-off character from “Shark Tale,” and don’t even try and convince me that “Antz” is a good movie.

originality trumps nostalgia

Spring Break—or that four day weekend everyone loves— is right around the corner.

Families will pack up and endure a grueling flight or a car ride that seems to take fifty years all the way from little old Maryland to the infamous Florida— where retirees and drug users get filed away.

However, within America’s sweaty armpit lays two destinations families flock to: Walt Disney World and Universal Studios, both located in Orlando. Many more are leaning towards the latter recently, due to a more welcoming environment and better rides.

“Everybody’s grandparents worked [at Disney] so we always got free tickets, but it wasn’t as fun because it’s more childish,” graduate Eve Moore (‘18) said. “I lived in Orlando for three years prior to coming here and my friends and I had annual passes [to Universal].

We’d go every weekend; it was like the eighth graders going to Hunt Valley but with sexy Brazilians and British tourists.”

The park seems to have more for the family, like a child-swap option that allows parents to skip the line and take turns on rides, and more thrilling attractions for people who aren’t, you know, five years old.

“I love Harry Potter World at Universal,” Maria Karvounis (‘19), who just returned from a trip to Universal Studios, said. “It brings everything to life... I’m obsessed.”

Under Universal’s empire is Dreamworks Studios, which include movies such as “Shrek” and “Despicable Me,” whose wild success

made them popular on social media.

“Universal is meme-able” Karvounis said.

Dreamworks puts out content in a way that is relatable, not just to its sole demographic of school-age kids. It’s a universal (no pun intended) sort of comedy that everyone can enjoy.

Although Disney’s movies are palatable for all ages, nobody’s falling over laughing at Disney’s “Tangled” like they are at the hidden innuendos in Dreamworks’ “Bee Movie.”

Joseph Kline (‘22) refers to Dreamworks movies as “an experience.” Kline played Shrek in the Youth Theatre of Northern Baltimore County’s production of “Shrek the Musical,” with a killer Scottish accent, might I add.

“They’re for kids, sure, but as my grandfather says, ‘[you’re] still a kid, doesn’t matter if [you’re] 60, [you] can still be 13 at heart,’” Kline said.

Dreamworks also has its originality going for them. Just like Disney, they take your standard classic fairy tales and give them a twist— not just a minimalist adjective title like “Frozen” or “Brave.”

Because of this wild originality and widespread relatability, the class of 2020 chose “Shrek” to be their hallway for spirit week this past year.

Students quickly embraced the theme.

Lauren Rasmussen (‘20) was “immediately inspired” when she heard, and started planning out a Shrek costume, in which her “true colors” shone through with swamp green body paint.

“I’ve always loved fairy tales and the fantasy genre, and the ‘Shrek’ movies combine all of that together in a really entertaining way,” Rasmussen said.

Whether you’re looking for a stellar spring break spot or a movie to watch on one of our million snow days, dump Disney. Move over, Woody. There’s a new sheriff in town; he wears black and yellow and he’s about to steal your girl.

Junior prom attire is subjective

New student band makes debut at Variety Show

The band performed at this year’s Variety Show, where they concluded the diverse, entertaining production with a unique act of their own. “I think they kind of brought a sense of unity. It was a lot of fun to watch,” Gracie Brown (‘21) said.

s the prom changes are forcing the class of 2020 to set the standard for the new Junior prom, we are faced with the decision of short or long dresses for this year’s spring dance.

For the first time ever, juniors and seniors will be separated for prom forcing juniors into the cafeteria and seniors elsewhere in Baltimore County. Although, like many other girls, I always envisioned myself wearing a long dress to prom, it doesn’t seem fit for a dance in the cafeteria.

As soon as the change was announced, the debate among the junior girls between short and long dresses quickly began.

The Jprom committee sent out a survey to see what style of dress most girls planned on wearing.

“The majority of people said they’re wearing short dresses, and I know personally I am, but I still love that there will be a variety of types of dresses that everyone chooses to wear,” Brooke Wilson (‘20), the Junior Class President, said.

“I say [wear] whatever makes you feel comfortable.”

While the changes are difficult to accept, the new rules are here to stay, so we might as well make the most of this year’s prom since it will still be a memorable part of our high school experience.

“I like seeing everyone dressed up and getting pictures with all of my friends beforehand,” Lily Potter (‘20) said.

“I’m also very excited to dance on the red carpet.”

The dance will have a Hollywood theme, featuring a red carpet, professional photographers, and a variety of catered foods. Although the dance is in the cafeteria, as juniors and their guests enter the building, it will no longer feel like the average homecoming, allowing everyone to get more dressed up.

The guys voted to wear khakis with a button-down shirt, sports coat, and a tie; however, there are no set rules.

“I’m relieved I didn’t have to buy a tux this year,” Ethan Caulk (‘20) said. “Senior year seems more fitting for it, but nonetheless it will be a blast.”

Girls who are wearing short dresses to this year’s prom will still have the opportunity next year to wear the long dress we associate with prom.

To ensure that no two girls wear the same dress, the Jprom committee created an Instagram account where girls can send pictures of their dresses to be shared with the class.

Run by Nilou Heshmati (‘20), she thinks the account is a great way to get juniors excited while also sharing important information with the girls in the class.

While controversial, the changes won’t be as drastic as many are making them out to be.

“I understand that a lot of people are wary about the change, but most schools have theirs split as well,” Wilson said. “I think that switching to this style is going to make senior prom so much more special because it will be something new.”

As the junior class is the first to host their own prom, there is pressure to set the model for future classes.

Dresses, long or short, won’t compromise your overall experience of the dance and it’s still something to be excited for. Wear whatever makes you feel confident, don’t let the majority persuade your decision.

Shotgun Swahili and the Garden Gnomes. Could four words as random as these ever go together? According to Josh Porta (‘20), Sam Albanese (‘20), Vernon Smith (‘21), and Jack Milnarchik (‘21), they can.

Those who attended the Variety Show in January may have seen a glimpse of our school’s newest—and perhaps youngest—band. They concluded the show with covers of “Can’t Stop” by the Red Hot Chili Peppers, “Smells like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana, and “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind.

“I think they’re really good because instead of trying to focus on one obscure artist or covering their own material, they made a decision to just play retro-popular music from the 90s,” Fine and Performing Arts Department Chair Robert Rose said.

“I think that that’s an admirable thing.”

The Variety Show was their first live performance as a complete band, and it was important to each one of them.

“I feel like the Variety Show was pretty sentimental to me, given it was our first real performance,” Albanese said. “It was probably the most fun I’ve had with that guitar in my life, given that my string broke in the first show.”

Smith agreed, as he thought that it was “a great opportunity to get some publicity and start playing live.”

Each member had a different reason for forming the band, but they all generally said the same thing: they share a love for music and performing.

“We all have that common interest in punk rock and became really good friends pretty [quickly,]” guitarist Albanese said.

“To me, we all sort of mesh together into this idea of playing music because it’s fun.”

They combined their influences in their Variety Show setlist, where they entertained the crowd in a dynamic finish to a talent-filled night.

“It was a really good conclusion,” Nina Burget (‘21) said. “Everyone kind of let loose and just had fun on the stage.”

Rose agreed with Burget and appreciated the sentiment they brought to the show.

“I think they gave us a sense of [closure] and [a sense of bringing us all together,]” Rose said. “Three different guys in three different groups, plus a guy from outside the school came together to provide us with some great entertainment and some real fun times. It was sort of a community [coming] together kind of moment.”

This tight-knit group was formed from all over the community, and each of the four members bring something different to the band.

“Vernon is the glue that holds everyone together. Jack keeps the beat, and Sam and I act as two orchestrators that plan the gigs,” Porta said. “Besides that, Sam drops really nice licks and I really only provide vocals and some solo guitar spirit.”

This combination results in a group of talented guys who are able to distance themselves from regular high school norms and do something that not only makes them happy, but that others enjoy.

“All of them are quiet, non-assuming, background-type people,” Rose said.

“This gives them an outlet and I think to-

gether they become stronger.”

Their name may seem out-of-the-ordinary, but it describes the band with its uniqueness and surprise factor.

“They know I’m in another band, so we were just jokingly coming up with names that we could use and my front man said, ‘It should be something absurd... like ‘shotgun’ and then some weird word.’ [I suggested] ‘Swahili’ because we were [learning about] Africa in AP World,” Smith said. “Garden gnomes just came.”

The Variety Show was the first time they performed live, but it won’t be their last. They have goals for the future that both advance and exceed in-school gigs.

“For the future, we have some big ideas,” Albanese said. “Some in-school gigs, including pep rally, and as many outof-school gigs we’re given.”

Rose has already begun pursuing the band as an option for next year’s pep rally.

“I just think that having a band there would be so cool,” Rose said. “If we could have the steel band and a rock band at the Pep Rally, I think that would be awesome.”

In the words of Gracie Brown (‘21), “Josh Porta’s band was sick.” She isn’t their only fan, though.

After seeing them at the show, many students, teachers, and parents across the community are anticipating great success from the band.

“I think [the band] gives us a sense that Hereford has a wide, diverse group of talent here,” Rose said. “[They] give us something else to be proud of, being Hereford folks.”

Annual Maryland day highlights Maryland pride schoolwide

Three-hundred eightyfive years ago, on March 25, 1634—a date now known as Maryland Day, a legal holiday observed in Maryland—some of the first settlers arrived at the newly named “Maryland Colony,” now known as the state of Maryland.

The first capital of Maryland was St. Mary’s City, until it was moved to Annapolis 60 years later in 1695.

However, Baltimore’s deeper harbor and stronger presence in the seafood industry quickly overshadowed the capital’s power.

Located in the Mid-Atlantic, Maryland has a vast selection of mountains, beaches, and everything in between.

“I probably have a bias growing up here, but I think Maryland’s landscape is beautiful,” social studies teacher Peter Imhoff said. “I appreciate the variety of farmland, woods, mountains, the Chesapeake Bay, and [the] beaches.”

Another notable feature of Maryland is the climate.

“We have all four seasons and we have tons of activities to do in each season,” August Bubier (‘19) said. “We have mountains and beaches for all sorts of different activities, [and] we have the amazing Chesapeake Bay where you can explore, canoe, kayak, etc.

Most other states don’t have half of what Maryland has to offer.”

When one thinks of Maryland, it’s difficult to not think of some very common symbols that represent the state: the state flag, Old Bay, blue crabs, Black-Eyed Susan’s, and of course, our sports teams: the Baltimore Ravens, Baltimore Orioles, and the Maryland Terrapins.

With great recognition comes great pride, as Maryland is arguably one of the most prideful states; it is not difficult to scope out someone wearing the Maryland flag while in public.

“I think Maryland pride is the idea that people who live here really do respect and love the state and everything it has to offer,” Bubier said. “I would say I have extreme Maryland pride; I have a Maryland flag hanging above my bed, I have two Old Bay shirts, and I put Old Bay on every food possible. I have pride for the sports teams here too. I am a huge Ravens and Orioles fan and always will be.”

Maryland’s sports teams are a large component of Maryland pride.

“I love Maryland pride! It is so fun and brings everyone together,” Malorie Flynn (‘19) said. “You can definitely tell

someone is from Maryland by the way they talk and celebrate on game days.”

Pride for our state goes beyond its current residents as well.

“Although I don’t live in Maryland anymore, you’ll see my Maryland Flag crab sticker on my Jeep and catch me at the Black-Eyed Susan Horse Races at Pimlico [Race Course],” Hereford graduate Renee Wilson (‘12) said.

Graduates may travel far and wide, but they will always call Maryland home.

“Being from Maryland will always be something special,” Tiffaney Hicks (‘06), who has since moved to Italy, said. “You get the best of all things in Maryland. Whether it be witnessing the beautiful seasons, Camden Yards baseball, crabbing, [or] farming, Maryland has something to offer anyone.” “[Maryland has] the most pride that I have seen compared to any other state,” Josh Powers (‘09) said. “It’s rare to see someone sporting a state flag and be proud but for Marylanders, it’s what we love.”

Flynn has also used her love of Maryland in her AP Studio Art portfolio, which features aspects of Baltimore.

“My grandfather was

lieutenant and served in the Baltimore City Police Department for over 40 years. My uncle and cousin are Baltimore City cops, so being able to portray my view point of those types of people in a city where there is a lot of controversy is really important to me,” Flynn said. “Through my portfolio, I really wanted to let others see what I see in Baltimore. We have an amazing city; it is so rich in history, the restaurants [and shopping] are amazing, [and] we are on the water. Overall, it is a beautiful place and has so much potential to prosper if people saw the good it [has] to offer.”

Although Baltimore may be known for its negatives, including high crime rates, residents are still able to recognize the positive aspects of it.

“I have a real fondness for Baltimore, the city I grew up in and live in now,” Imhoff said. “Baltimore has character, charm, a nice middle size to it, and a certain humility which gives it class.”

Baltimore is not the only part of Maryland that brings pride to residents.

“I am very happy I was able to grow up in such a great state,” Bubier said.

Cherry Blossom Festival celebrates Japanese-American unity

In honor of celebrating the close relationship between Japan and the United States, the 85th annual National Cherry Blossom Festival will be held this spring in Washington D.C. during the peak bloom of the trees.

In Japan, cherry blossoms symbolize the coming of spring, a time of renewal, and the short-lived nature of life. Their period of peak bloom is brief: after around two weeks, their blossoms start to fall.

The festival commemorates the March 27, 1912 gift of 3,000 Japanese cherry trees from Mayor Yukio Ozaki of Tokyo City to our nation’s capital to further enhance the countries’ friendship.

First Lady Helen Taft and the Viscountess Chinda, wife of the Japanese ambassador, planted the first two trees on the northern bank of the Tidal Basin.

As the sakura—the most common type of cherry blossom— is the national flower of Japan, the cherry blossoms flood Japanese streets with pink and attract tourists from around the world.

“In Japan, the cherry blossoms only bloom for about a week so it’s a very short period of time where you can see them,” Atsuko Day, attendant of the Japanese and American cherry blossom festivals, said. “People go with families and friends and everyone gets very excited for it.”

This year the festival in our nation’s capital will be held from March 20 to April 13. Even though the blooming period can last up to 14 days, it’s nearly impossible to give an accurate forecast more than 10 days before peak bloom.

According to the National Park Service, “the length of the blooming period depends on weather conditions. Cool, calm weather can extend the length of the bloom, and a rainy, windy day can bring an abrupt end to the ephemeral blossoms. A late frost can prevent the trees from blooming at all.”

However, there are many family-friendly events throughout the festival including National Cherry Blossom’s Opening Ceremony, the Blossom Kite Festival, Petalpalooza, the National Cherry Blossom Festival Parade, and more than 200 international cultural performances.

Previously known as the Southwest Waterfront Fireworks Festival, Petalpalooza is one of the most popular events during the festival. On April 6 only, the piers of the Southwest Waterfront will feature interactive art installations, games, live music, and a firework show.

The Tidal Basin Welcome Area, known to be the heart of the cherry blossom trees, is offering paddleboat reservations for the best view of the trees and iconic landmarks.

Other excursions include guided tours like the Free Cher-

ry Blossom Walking Tours or Cherry Blossom Cruises to learn more about the history of the cherry trees.

As the nation’s biggest celebration of Japanese culture, Washington D.C. features daily performances of traditional and contemporary music, dance, and martial arts demonstrations attracting around 1.5 million tourists from around the globe each year.

Japanese Culture Day at the Library of Congress, held on March 23, introduces Japanese culture and life through handson activities such as origami artwork creation, trying on kimonos and more.

On Sunday, April. 14, National Harbor will be partnering with the Japanese-American Society to honor the annual Sakura Sunday event by bringing in world-class Japanese entertainment and Japanese artisans.

This year’s 2019 official artist of the festival is Simon Bull, a recipient of many national awards and the previous official artist of Muhammad Ali and the U.S. Winter Olympics.

His artwork will be displayed in a gallery at The Watergate Hotel in D.C. Businesses in the Waterfront District will also participate in the festivities through special offers and a cherry blossom store display window competition. Local restaurants may offer special dishes or add cherries to existing recipes in honor of the trees. Additionally, the Capital Wheel will turn pink during the festival.

If you’d like to help support the cherry trees around the Tidal Basin, the Trust for the National Mall has launched an Endow a Cherry Tree Cam-

paign. Donations go to the official Cherry Tree Endowment, giving the National Park Service additional resources to fund the care, maintenance, and replacement of the trees.

As the nation’s biggest celebration of the re-emergence of spring, it would be a missed opportunity to not go to the festival.

National Celery Month brings unique takes on an underrated food

Why celery?

March marks National Celery Month, where people are encouraged to try out new recipes based on, or including, celery. The fibrous vegetable is primarily grown in California and Michigan. If ever visiting Michigan, the city of Portage has a celery museum, called the Celery Flats Interpretive Center. Here are some unique ways to eat celery, in honor of this month, and hopefully they motivate you to make them or try your own recipe!

The mochi trend gains popularity

Following boba drinks, mochi ice cream has recently become a food trend seen throughout various cities in the U.S., and is even being sold in some grocery stores.

Mochi is a traditional Japanese food, made by pounding rice into a paste and molding it into different shapes. It usually is made during ceremonies, where people take turns pounding the paste until it forms a sticky ball that can be shaped.

In Japanese culture, many kids grow up eating a food called daifuku. It is traditionally mochi filled with a sweet soybean paste, but stores have sold ones filled with ice cream for generations.

The creation of mochi ice cream balls is credited to Frances Hashimoto, a Japanese-American who came up with the idea with her husband and decided to expand on it as a business. Now, it is sold by various companies and in different flavors.

My/Mo Mochi is one brand of this product, and it has been rapidly growing. According to fooddive.com, they have taken advantage of the business opportunity and have come out with new flavors of mochi as well as started non-dairy and vegan lines of products.

This brand is sold in Wegmans, Safeway, Weis Markets and many other chain grocery stores.

Their most popular flavors are Mango Madness, Green Tea Zen, Chocolate Lovers, Strawberry Sweetness, and Red Bean.

It is now seen on social media, and talked about throughout the younger population.

Although not everyone knows about it, the trend is continuing to grow, and many mochi ice cream businesses are expanding their reach across America and other countries.

“My younger sister showed me them because all of her friends are eating them,” Kelsey Fowler (’21) said. “Just like every other trend I think they will get really popular and then after a few months people will stop getting them and another thing will come along.”

Fowler’s favorite flavor is strawberry, and she encourages others to try them.

Despite the excitement surrounding the trend, some believe they are overrated.

“When I went to try them for the first time I was really excited because everyone had hyped them up so much,” Lindsay Posner (’20) said. “They are good, but my expectations were a lot higher when trying them for the first time. So no, I don’t think they are as good as everyone says.”

She thinks that the trend won’t last very long, as people can simply eat ice cream instead.

Like most trends, mochi balls may not last for long. Trends innovate and come out with new versions of their products, but their popularity will only last for so long.

Another celery combination is celery with cream cheese. We also added strawberry jelly on it to add some sweetness.

Our View: AirPods are an unnecessary luxury The new wireless Bluetooth headphones seem to be filling the ears of only the coolest teens in town, but are these “AirPods” really worth it?

Apple sells their product for $159, but you can find them for more or less expensive prices if you choose. Yes, these headphones solve the problem of constantly untangling your old ones, but most of the time it only takes a solid minute to untangle them anyway.

As frequently as the average person loses headphones, ones without the wire seems even easier to misplace, and I wouldn’t want to lose $159 headphones. “[AirPods aren't worth it] because they’re three times more expensive than the ones without wires and if they fall out, the quality is immediately ruined. If you lose [your AirPods] they are going to be much harder to find than the ones with wires; wire ones work just as well,” Connor Dugan (’19), member of the Radio Technology class, said.

Although the headphones seem to be popular among middle school through college students, they are also making their way to the Baby Boomers and Gen X’s who use them commonly for business purposes instead of the outdated Bluetooth ear piece.

Hate to break it to you grandpa, but you don’t look any younger wearing the white piece. But really, what difference does the white pod make? Amazon sells your typical black earpiece for $20, just an eighth of the price apple choses to sell their money-makers. Teenagers are using any headphones to play music,

where the quality of sound isn't all that important and seems to be pretty consistent from earpiece to earpiece considering they are exactly the same style and shape. After all, AirPods look like regular Apple headphones with the w i r e chopped off.

Have an iPhone 6 or 10? They can work on both by simply connecting it to your Bluetooth, but trust me, my free wire ones work the exact same with a dongle, a small connector which takes the place of a headphone jack on the newer phones.

An Apple dongle cost $9.00, so with at a low cost one can make any pair of wire headphones work on any Apple device.

Letter to the Editor: Parking debacle needs to end Due to recent changes in morning drop-off and parking procedures, the length of the car line heading north on York Road has grown to extend all the way to the traffic light by 7 Eleven. This has caused major disruptions and inconveniences in students’ and locals’ commutes to school. Many students have recently found it difficult to make it to school on time because of this new-found congestion. Occasionally joined by another administrator or Officer Croft, Mr. Jira now perches himself at the end of the English wing each morning to check parking tags and prevent parents from dropping their kids off there. Inevitably, our new

parking patrol has increased the time it takes for all students to get to school by slowing traffic to haggle each and every vehicle. Other daybreak aggravations for students include not being able to turn right at the barn from the upper senior lot to reach the lower student lot, even though it’s a perfectly legal turn. If there are no spots left in the senior lot—which is the situation most of the time because the senior lot stickers were oversold—then students must park at the track, Bunker Road, or re-enter the lengthy drop-off line to reach the lower student lot, a feat that usually results in lateness. During a recent announcement to the students on

the school’s intercom, Mr. Jira argued that “if you get to the school after 7:22, you’re late.” And at what time at the beginning of the school year were we told the school opened? 7:30. It’s difficult for students to adapt to these changes in the middle of the school year when original morning routines sufficed until recently. These modifications have caused the Hereford morning mojo to become off balanced, affecting students, faculty, and locals. I hope this dilemma is taken into consideration for the benefit of current and future Bulls.

Students need to step up their school spirit game As a senior, I can confidently say that the level of school spirit has become significantly less over the years I’ve been here.

And I don’t know

It’s not just sporting events either. It’s all the fundraisers and dances too. High School consists of four very significant formative years. Why wouldn’t you make the most of it?

One of the biggest issues I’d like to address is the fact that only a small fraction of underclassmen attended the winter formal. I understand if you were busy, feeling sick over this rough winter. But for all of you that sat at home and played video games or watched YouTubers give makeup tutorials, I have one question: Why? I’m not sure if it’s an issue of thinking you’re too cool for an underclassmen dance, but if that’s it, you should take a second and reevaluate your whole viewpoint. One thing I’ve learned over these four years is that any event is fun if you make it fun.

How could all of your friends at one place together not be fun?

Second, regardless if you care about the school or not, don’t you want a nice prom and senior picnic? Where do you think the money for those events tailored for you come from?

But I’m not just blaming underclassmen, don’t get me wrong. Only a small amount of seniors showed up to Carniball at the end of last year. Not even that many upperclassmen go to sporting events. If you’re just not into sports, fine. But as a student athlete myself, I know all about the thrill and rush of a big crowd to hype the team up. Last year the stands were packed for the soccer team’s playoff games; this year the stands were practically barren.

My sophomore year, the whole football team, a ton of lacrosse boys, all of the soccer girls, plus a whole bunch of other students went to the Varsity Field Hockey Counties game against Dulaney. And to this day I still remember it because the student section was packed with kids from every grade and rowdier than I’ve ever seen. I have no idea how field hockey works but still had so much fun watching.

So it bothers me when people don’t go to events because they “won’t be fun.” If everyone showed up it would be a blast.

“More people are focused on getting good grades and stressing about college and completely forget what fun is,” Bruce Hoosier (’19) said.

I know life gets busy, but why is everyone wasting away what could be great high school memories? These years go by in the blink of an eye and these school events with your friends are going to be some of the things you hold onto.

Don’t worry I didn’t forget to mention spirit week, which had some of the lowest participation percentages in a while. I remember being a middle schooler seeing the high schooler’s pictures on Instagram of them all dressed up in their decorated hallways and being so excited to be a part of that. Even Pep Rally is less spirited. The chanting has lessened.

“School spirit comes in waves,” Senior Class President Emma Wallner said. “For example, the sophomore class has consistently high participation on spirit days while the freshman class dwindled.”

My freshman year, the juniors, wearing white, threw up baby powder to pump up their class. The sports captains’ little routines were more elaborate when being introduced.

My freshman year, the varsity football team captains formed a human bench-press.

“All I know is that it’s the responsibility of upperclassmen to set a tone for the rest of the school to engage in school spirit,” Wallner said. “When the juniors and seniors fall short, we all fall short.”

What happened to the spirit?

Wanting to represent your class, the competition, the unity of the grades, where did that go? Having school spirit doesn’t only help out the school, but it helps your years be more memorable and exciting.

I mean the choice is up to you.

Female athletes deserve proper recognition

Doctors, lawyers, government officials: positions that are highly revered by society. Professional athletes: those who excel remarkably at a competitive activity, those who have gained adulation and respect from whom they’ve inspired.

As we consider such people, we typically have a preconceived idea about their persona: powerful, strong, and masculine. These adjectives go hand-in-hand, right? According to our society, yes. Great power and strength confer masculinity.

This is not completely untrue. Males, on average, are stronger than females. This is not unethical to say. But should power and success immediately suggest masculinity? Historically, sure. But today, based on the increasing number of women studying medicine, law, political science, and other prestigious fields, power and success can suggest femininity as easily as masculinity.

Over the past 15 years, women have hovered close to the 50 percent mark nationally for all medical school applicants (Washington Post).

The number of female lawyers are at a record high, as one in three lawyers today are women (United States Census Bureau).

Since 1971, the amount of women in Congress has increased by 17.6% (Center for American Women and Politics at Rutgers).

And of all NCAA Division I schools, 43.4% of the total student-athlete population is female.

So obviously, we’re all aware of the gradually slimming gap between men and women. So why are females still underappreciated at the professional, collegiate, and high school levels of athletics?

For certain sports—basketball, soccer, ice hockey—it’s understandable why the male version is more appealing: the game is quicker and stronger. This is expected when the rules for the game are identical for men and women. But how about when the games are policed with different rules, and are completely unique sports as a result?

Lacrosse, for example, is a sport played by both men and women. Each version of the game has its own identity. Men’s lacrosse is focused on power and strength, while women’s lacrosse demands quickness and precision. Both are respectable.

But when we discuss women’s lacrosse and its attention being primarily on finesse, it is automatically dubbed a weak game simply because the physicality is quieter. Who wants to watch a weak game?

It is exactly here that the under appreciation of women’s lacrosse is rooted.

Now, I could shock you with pictures of bruises that paint the arms of my teammates and me in the midst of lacrosse season, but I won’t; it’s not pretty. Instead, I’ll complain a bit more.

Not only is the girls’ lacrosse team thoroughly dismissed as a team of mediocre caliber that delivers boring performances, but it is dismissed as so unjustifiably.

In 2018, the team graduated four seniors—two of whom now play lacrosse for Division I schools and two who compete at top 15 Division III schools. The team made it to the state championship and lost by one single, lousy goal to Glenelg High School, the three-time defending state champs. By the final whistle, Hereford had outshot Glenelg, shooting on a goalie who now plays at a top three Division I program.

The current team carries seven seniors—two of which who will compete at top 10 Division I schools this fall, two who will continue their careers at highly respected Division I universities, and three who will dominate at Division II and III schools.

Not to mention, four current juniors are committed to Division I and III schools to play lacrosse.

Over the past four years, the Hereford girls’ lacrosse roster has been padded with 19 athletes whose futures included playing collegiate lacrosse. The boys have had 13. If the boys and girls teams are sending virtually the same number of athletes to play in college, why are girls under appreciated? Why did the stands clear out for the girls’ state championship game that followed the boys’ state championship game?

So before we disregard female athletes and assign to them weak and unimpressive qualities, let’s acknowledge the talent that Hereford has been lucky enough to have. After all, it is lacrosse season and your Lady Bulls are out for blood!

Sketchy programs for iPhones raise concerns

As I open up my iPhone Notes app to write out a draft, I feel myself looking around in search of tape to put over my camera and microphone. Who could be tuned in? Whoever they are, they definitely do not need to be seeing my triple chin or hearing my incoherent mumbling.

Scrolling through social media or going on literally any webpage, you’ve likely seen an advertisement that was a little too specific, where something you could have sworn you were just merely thinking about is now plastered in a banner across your screen. Now you feel oddly violated.

Welcome to the world of targeted advertising, in which a consumer’s previous purchases or searches can be used to create more accurate ads.

In an interview with CBS, Google said it had access to 70% of credit and debit card transactions in the United States and used trackers on 76% of websites to “better tailor their ads.” “‘Clear browser history’ is not actually a thing,” theorist Gaige DuBois (‘19) said. “If you clear your Safari or YouTube searches, it’s still accessible.”

Although Google and Facebook say they don’t store recordings from smartphone microphones for ad tailoring, can we really be so sure?

In 2015, Apple introduced live photos, which take just like a still photo, but when held down becomes a short video clip— equipped with audio. In his latest YouTube series, Shane Dawson tackles a handful of technology-related conspiracy theories, including some related to the iPhone microphone.

“Apple came out with a statement [saying]… we record you three seconds before and three seconds after [a live photo]” Dawson said.

The question is posed again, though: how do they know when the picture will be taken? To ensure that there is audio accounted for three seconds before and after the picture is snapped, the microphone must always be running.

“Apple is always watching and listening to us; it’s really an invasion of privacy” iPhone user Addie Feliz (‘22) said, having watched Dawson’s latest series.

However, Apple isn’t alone in using questionable technology. Third party apps are joining in too; ever used a Snapchat filter?

With similar technology, a deep fake takes a scan of a face from various photo stills and creates a mask that goes over an existing face and can mimic the exact way someone talks or moves, essentially a digital clone. It may sound super high tech, only available to professional graphic designers with million-dollar budgets, but the truth is closer to home than you’d expect.

FakeApp is a free program that can be downloaded to any computer that takes stills of any face and creates a deep fake of it. Anyone can access it, and the possibilities are endless.

“Someone could use the president’s face [as a deep fake] and make a threat to North Korea, for example, and they’d think it’s real. They could bomb us, and it could escalate very quickly,” Shane Dawson fan Victoria Westra (‘20) said.

Although it may seem far-fetched, deep fake technology is being used to commit fraud and identity theft, and that ad that just came up on Instagram is not a coincidence. So get your tin foil hat, your sticker for your webcam, and don’t forget to smile, because you’re on camera!

As a constituent, you have a voice in politics

When I left for Annapolis to spend a day at the Maryland Legislature with Delegate and local parent Michele Guyton of District 42B, I did not know what to expect. All I knew was that I had chosen this day to visit as there would be hearings on educational issues.

To navigate the plethora of different buildings of the State House, one can use the labyrinthine tunnels under the State Capitol. These tunnels are rumored to be in place to protect members of the government from protestors on the days of highly controversial votes. I used these tunnels multiple times that day, mostly to avoid going through security for the tenth time.

The streets above were crowded with foot traffic, a mix of politicians and ev-

eryday citizens. Apparently, the day I came was a quiet day, nothing in comparison to “Gun Day,” the day on the calendar when Gun issues are discussed.

Prior to visiting Annapolis to shadow Delegate Guyton, I was expecting the environment to be closed off to the public and their views.

Instead, citizens were very active, lobbying inside the Delegate and Senate buildings and appealing in front of councils at hearings. Activists and lobbyists were easy to find, visiting offices of politicians and waiting outside of the legislative offices.

“If I hear from a constituent, I will listen and respond” Delegate Guyton said.

I soon found out these constituent concerns ranged from liquor sales to testing in schools and even more polarizing subjects such as gun control.

“Half of my bills are brought to me as concerns from my constituents” said Guyton.

One such bill is Health Bill 561, which adds psychological abuse to the definition of “abuse.” This bill applies to vulnerable adults who were not previously covered under the law. Delegate Guyton brought this bill to the legislature due to a constituent voicing their concerns.

Issues such as raising the minimum wage to $15 have been brought to Delegate Guyton’s attention. Without hearing from the citizens of district 42B, she would not have been aware of the effects it would have on small Hereford businesses who cannot afford to pay a higher wage, causing many places we know and love to go out of business.

She can now advocate for certain amendments that would help these businesses.

From my visit, I learned that while I do not plan to pursue a career in politics, I admire those who do.

“People are supportive in Annapolis and it crosses party

lines how helpful and committed most legislatures are” Guyton said.

The best politicians put tremendous time and effort into their work and truly listen to and care about what their constituents need. As a politician, you are a “public servant” in the truest sense. We have a form of government that allows us to improve our communities and our country by engaging with our elected officials. Therefore, if you really care, voice your opinions and they will be heard.

Get a Glimpse: Gracie Brown

Gracie Brown (’21) loves being involved in our school through performing arts.

A main part of Brown’s life since she was little has been theater.

“I’ve been doing theater since I was four; I did church plays [at first] and as I grew up I started getting involved in Artistic Children’s Theatre,” Brown said. “We do plays every summer at St. James. I’ve been doing that for eight years.”

Her main interest involving theatre at school is in International Thespian Society (ITS), where she is one of the only two sophomore officers.

“Right now we’re working on a fundraiser, which is split up between a bunch of days,” Brown said. “We [did] fundraisers at Chick-fil-a, Sweetfrog, Panera, and CPK.” Other than fundraising, ITS spends its time planning different events for members to do together, such as making props, planning blocking for plays, and participating in plays.

“Last month we participated in Theatre Fest which was at Bel Air High School.

We did a play and everybody really liked it,” Brown said. “Basically, [Theatre Fest is] a bunch of people who like theater coming together to do more theater than just the plays.”

Brown’s favorite part about theater is the aspect of having a second family.

“Everyone in theater gets along. It’s basically a big family,” Brown said. “Everyone’s really nice to each other and supports each other through everything. [They’re] really supportive and accepting.”

Brown has been a part of many of the plays that our school has put on.

“I was in Flight of the Lawnchair Man, I was in 9 to 5, and I was just in Mamma Mia,” Brown said. “For the upcoming play, I’ll be doing lights because we have to learn how to do it for next year.”

Other than theater, Brown is a member of the choir. She has a gifted voice that has been noticed by many, including fans and players who go to our school’s basketball games where she occasionally sings the National Anthem.

“I’m the boys’ basketball manager, and Mr. Sobel recommended me to Coach Rhoads to sing [the National Anthem],” Brown said. “I did it one time last year, [and] he’s asked me to do it a few times after that.”

A majority of Brown’s time is also taken up from her time spent being a class officer for the class of 2021.

“I absolutely love [being a class officer],” Brown said. “All [the other] officers are my best friends and Mrs. Maffei is like my mom at school.”

Additionally, she is a part of the student council, even though most of her time is taken up by the ITS and by being a class officer.

Outside of school, Brown enjoys volunteering around the community.

“I do a lot of stuff though my church,” Brown said. “I volunteer a lot around the community, at school, and I help out with the elementary schools.”

Brown has an idea of what she would like to do after high school.

“Hypothetically, I would like to go to college to become a music teacher,” Brown said. “If not a music teacher, I would love to become a music therapist because I think it’s really cool that people can learn to get through problems using music.”

Gracie performs Les Miserables at St. James Academy. This was Brown’s favorite show that she has ever been a part of.
