The tea on local coffee shops: A critique on caffeine

Any avid coffee-drinker has a typical order. Whether it is black, or has an elaborate mix of foam, syrups, and flavors, the repetitiveness of the order can become mundane. While some feel safer with their predictable cup of coffee, others become tired of large franchises such as Starbucks, Dunkin Donuts, and other chains.

“McDonald’s coffee is basically all creamer,” Emma Swensen (’20) said. She drinks coffee every morning and last year she established a personal record of drinking eight cups in a day.

“It’s an acquired taste,” Swensen said while explaining how her habits began merely in the sixth grade. “I like it somewhere in the middle, I won’t drink straight up black coffee, but I do

like some sweetener to take the bitter edge off.”

According to macrotrends.net, Dunkin Donuts has a net-worth of $6.1 billion, and Starbucks is leading the industry with $100 billion in sales, as of 2019. That’s a lot of joe. And while sales are important for companies to thrive, there is something about larger franchises that make drinking coffee more of a transaction, and less of an experience. For those who are searching for alternate options, here are a few small, local shops that are worth a try.

Velocinno Bike & Coffee Have your wheels stopped working? Whether you need repair for your bike or a quick pick-me-up, Velocinno does it all. The combined coffee and bike shop located on Falls Road was once a house many years ago, but is now being rented for business. Inside, customers can find protein snacks, biking accessories or outfits, and even ice cream. Just around the corner from the sitting area, a repair shop can be found. The building is small, but their outdoor seating makes up for this. Chairs are placed underneath a tent with a complimentary heat lamp and TV. There are also plenty of bike racks for those who decide to grab a drink after their workout. In regard to the actual coffee, Velocinno offers fun flavors for any of their espressos, cappuccinos, lattes, and mochas. Their beans are grinded in-store, and they are delivered from a company called ‘Stumptown.’ I ordered the white chocolate latte and was very impressed with the detailed art that was left on top of my foam. They also have flavors like coconut, chocolate, and mint. Char, an employee, said that her favorite part of working there is the people and being able to build relationships with each customer. She also works at Peet’s Coffee, a more mainstream coffee joint in Hunt Valley, and she said the environment is very different in both shops.

The Filling Station Located in Sparks, the once bustling auto shop and gas station now provides a cozy spot to drink a cup of coffee, eat baked goods, and have… Mexican food? That’s right, their expansive menu offers options for breakfast and lunch, including their home-made burritos, tacos and quesadillas since they are open from 6:30 am to 3 pm. One of their staff members, Mel, said that her favorite thing to eat there is either the burritos or tacos. As for beverages, Mel said that the “Mexican hot chocolate” is one of her favorite seasonal drinks. Mixed with spices like nutmeg and cayenne, it provides a fun twist on a classic drink. Now for the caffeine, their menu offers espressos, cappuccinos, macchiatos, lattes, and much more. They also have a variety of teas including chai, a seasonal pumpkin chai, green tea, and even peppermint.

I decided to get a hazelnut flavored latte and was pleasantly surprised by its perfect temperature and the subtle but satisfying hazelnut flavor. As I sat in the back room with plenty of seating, I was able to admire the antiques from the original building, such as old gas pumps, car parts, and oil cans. This vintage and rustic vibe quickly faded the commotion of York road and provided a relaxing atmosphere. Local art covers the walls and customers have the opportunity to purchase some if they’d like. The shop is very community oriented and has many loyal customers according to Mel, and she believes that is what differentiates them from chain stores.

John Brown Coffee Only minutes away from the hustle and bustle of Hunt Valley, John Brown Coffee is located on the corner of Falls and Shawan road. This, too, used to be a gas station from 1938 before being turned into a hip spot for coffee and sandwiches from a butchery next door in 2017. The shop is small but quaint, with cute features like a community book share, where customers can borrow books or drop off lightly used ones. The décor has a clean and modern look to it, but also has vintage elements like old posters and stools. I ordered a lavender flavored coffee, which as weird as it sounds, was surprisingly amazing. The flavor wasn’t too overpowering and overall the taste was smooth and calming. They also sell baked goods such as croissants and pastries. Their beans are imported from countries all over the world, such as this week’s blend from Kenya, Brazil, and Ecuador. Lindsey, the manager of the shop, said her favorite seasonal drink is the maple latte, which I also decided to try. It reminded me of pancakes drizzled in maple syrup, and once again, the flavor was balanced and not overpowering whatsoever. Sometimes places like Dunkin put a concerning amount of sugar in their coffee, and at that point, is it even coffee?

“NEHS Mondays” promote literacy through Scrabble

The beginning of the school year brings many writing assignments to students. College essays, practice AP essays, and other writing assignments are a part of high school. Many students struggle with these assignments, and the National English Honor Society has created a new event in order to assist students with these assignments. That event is NEHS Mondays.

During this weekly event, NEHS members conduct a writing workshop. NEHS members offer assistance with any piece of writing a student is struggling with, from college essays to midterm papers. Members critique a fellow student’s grammar, spelling, and overall effectiveness. As students are working on their essays and writing for days and weeks at a time, it is often helpful for a fresh pair of eyes to review their work, catching errors that went unnoticed previously. Having a fellow student review your work is also sometimes less stressful and more comfortable than having a teacher read often personal essays. This new event was created to provide extra writing help that students wouldn’t normally get.

This event will run all year, so the writing workshop is not just for college essays.

NEHS Mondays is a chance for students to receive yearlong writing help.

“It’s been really helpful with the essays you have to do for college,’’ Brooke Overmier (‘20) said. Many early admission deadlines are in October and early November, which gives a short period of time a student can receive in school help. This event provides extra time for perfecting college essays. Other students also may have firsthand experience about what to look for in a college essay or an academic assignment, providing invaluable help to fellow students.

During NEHS Mondays, students can also play Scrabble. Members can invite friends to play or non-members can sign up themselves.

Along with attracting new students to NEHS, playing a fun game of Scrabble with friends provides a break from the school day, while helping to improve spelling. After decompressing for an hour playing scrabble, it’s much easier to begin to focus again in your afternoon classes.

Scrabble has been shown to improve literacy in students. There is a direct correlation in test scores in students that read daily, and Baltimore County Public Schools has recognized this increase and has turned to focusing on student literacy. Better spelling and grammar, developed by daily reading, also contributes to higher test scores. Along with better test scores, proper spelling and grammar makes student writing seem more professional, which can lead to higher scores on AP tests and others.

Reading helps the brain make connections between written and spoken words, increasing knowledge of vocab and proper grammar. Students who read on their own show a better proficien-

cy at finding the main idea in a text, as well as identifying other aspects, which leads to better scores and grades in English class as well as standardized tests.

Singer Katie Allen strives for musical success in opera and theater

Katie Allen (’21) has been singing for a long time, however, she became serious in pursuing music during sophomore year.

By rigorously following her passion, Allen has had many unique opportunities to perform, performing at Carnegie Hall to participating in nine choirs simultaneously.

“When I’m singing, I automatically feel more relaxed and in a better mood. Something I find amazing about music is that it can emotionally move you depending on the genre and the changes in dynamics, lyrics, and notes,” Allen said.

More recently regarding opera, Allen has participated in private voice lessons to tune her natural and more classical voice, for a vibrato quality needed for operatic singing. In opera, Allen is categorized as a soprano, which requires a higher range than that of sopranos in choir.

“I’ve been a member of Chamber Choir with Katie for two years. She has a powerful voice with an incredible range. Some of my favorite memories of singing with Katie would include musicals and Chamber Choir,” Mary Beth Bauermann (’20) said.

“For the BCPS All Honors Jazz Choir, we were both outside our choral comfort zones. But it was such a fun and educational experience. Katie was chosen to perform a solo in that ensemble

and watching her thrive in an unfamiliar style was inspiring.”

Although, Allen has yet to lose her voice, it can become vocally tired. These challenges are accepted, as what she appreciates about the discipline outweighs the possible vocal strain.

“Opera is sung in a different language, but I like learning the different dictions and how to convey the emotional meaning of the song with technical aspects of the music,” Allen said.

This past summer, Allen was accepted into the Maryland Opera Summer Camp where she helped compose music and stared as the lead soprano.

“We titled the opera ‘Mercury’ and designed it to be a more modern opera instead of the normal old-timey settings. I helped compose the beginning chorus and final chorus of the opera,” Allen said.

Over the summer, Allen also had the opportunity to perform in front of 4,000 people singing the national anthem at Ripken stadium for their 4th of July fireworks event.

Even though Allen has performed countless times in front of many people, stage fright and nerves can still be present.

Mental health advocacy club “In the Know” offers emotional support

Everyone feels worried or anxious from time to time, but not everyone develops a mental illness. What’s the difference?

A mental illness is a health condition that gets in the way of your thinking, relating to others, and day-to-day functions.

Over 5% of adults experience a mental illness each year, which is equivalent to approximately 43.8 million people in the world. Many mental illnesses have been identified and defined, but not all want to talk about it or can talk about it. When teenagers are struggling with emotional problems they often turn to alcohol or drug use as a form of “self-medication”, which can be problematic for brain development during adolescence.

Luckily there are resources for students who need support.

Hereford welcomes a new club In the Know, which offers students an opportunity to express their feelings in a safe environment. This club revolves around mental health and destroying the negative stigma that often comes with it. It is a student founded and led mental health advocacy group that started up last year. The club meets every Thursday in room M-123 for both halves of enrichment.

In this club, students can come and talk about any issues they have, feelings they want to express, or anything else on their mind. This club provides a safe and positive atmosphere without judgement.

The club has several initiatives to their message throughout the community. Teachers wear ‘Mind over Matter’ T-shirts on the last Friday of every month to show that they are also available to help anyone who is struggling with mental illnesses.

Club member Chloe Speno (‘21) developed the idea of the club with the school’s social worker, Molly Esworthy.

“We want to bring a comfort in talking about it [mental health], because mental health is very hard to talk about due to the stigma around it. Our club is here to provide resources and insight on a subject that affects a lot of people,” Speno said.

Although the members of the club cannot give you professional advice, the meeting serves as a healthy outlet. The main goal is to bring awareness about mental health and the dangers it may bring when not treated. They advise not to use this club in lieu of seeking professional help.

“Our goal is to raise awareness about mental health as it becomes more prevalent in today’s youth and to provide resources for those struggling, to help support a more positive, stigma free learning environment,” Lauren Rasmussen (’20) said.

Contrary to popular belief, mental illnesses can affect anyone despite race, gender, religion, age, or social economic class. Anyone around you could be struggling, and it is important not to take these issues lightly. Mental illnesses are a very real and a can be debilitating experience that over millions of people live with. If you or anyone you know is suffering from a mental illness seek help whether that be from a professional, an adult or a trustworthy friend.

The Mint Leaf brings diversity to Hunt Valley

Indian food is one of many ethnic cuisines that people enjoy all over the world. The style of food is unique when it comes to its mix of spices, which are more often than not a new discovery for those who sit down to eat it for the first time. Heavy doses of cardamom, cayenne, tamarind, and other flavors can overwhelm an unfamiliar palate. Most people try it the first time and because of the unique style of mixing flavors they are surprised and discouraged to eat it again.

Indian food tends to be popular because of its healthier options. Most of the spices used for preparing dishes have many health benefits. This genre of food is made up of six primary tastes—sweet, salty, sour, pungent, bitter, and astringent.

Contrary to what people believe, most Indians are not vegetarians, even though most of Indian food can be cooked without meat and many vegetarian options fill their menu. A non-vegetarian entrée on their menu is the Mutton pepper fry, which is mutton cooked in black pepper, onions, tomato sauce, and flavored with curry leaves.

Curry is the food most often associated with Indian cuisine.

It is essentially any dish with sauce, which might be based around tomatoes, coconut milk, brown onions, or yogurt. It usually uses a complex combination of spices or herbs, including ground turmeric, cumin, coriander, ginger, and fresh or dried chilies.

The Mint Leaf, a new restaurant offering Indian cuisine, opened in Hunt Valley in April. The restaurant is in the same location that once housed Pei Wei, directly across from Coal Fire.

A second location in Ellicott City is called The Mint Room. The other location have been open for about a year.

At The Mint Leaf, you can either choose to dine with the buffet or order off the menu. Mint Leaf also offers takeout and delivery through their website or by phone.

Inside, the counter provides a view of the kitchen and chefs, allowing customers to see the meals being prepared. The warm lighting and the red color scheme make customers feel comfortable and relaxed. “Where food and hospitality become one,” is The Mint Leaf slogan. They also believe that “visiting our restaurant will fill you with warmth and put you in food heaven.”

One of the starters on the menu is Bombay Bhel, which is puffed rice, tomatoes, onions, and cilantro mixed in a tangy sauce topped with yogurt. Another starter is the Palak Chaat, crispy battered spinach leaves, deep fried and topped with chutney, crispy noodles, and chaat masala.

Aloo Gobi, is a popular vegetarian entrée on the menu. It consists of potatoes and cauliflower florets cooked in ginger, onion, tomato, and a blend of Indian spices. One of the non-vegetarian entrées is Acjari Murgh, which includes chicken cooked with Indian pickled spices, yogurt, and onion.

One of the chef’s specials is the Nalli Gosht, a slow braised lamb shank with whole spices, and red wine.

Whitney Langlee (‘20) has been to Mint Leaf and said that she thoroughly enjoyed her experience.

“I’m vegetarian so Indian food is always good because there is a lot of options,” Langlee said.

Langlee met the owner when she went to eat there, and they offered to give her and her mother free Chai teas.

Juli Giza (‘20) has also been to Mint Leaf and said that she

loves Indian food. Her favorite food is Japanese but says that Indian is a close second behind. Giza said that she had a great experience and that her favorite part was the welcoming atmosphere of the restaurant.

Karl Fernandez, who has been working in the restaurant industry for 25 years is one of the managers at Mint Leaf. He first started at the Ambassador Dining Room which is in Baltimore, MD. He then moved to Columbia before he started working with Mint Leaf.

“It took us about six months to pick up and do what we are doing at the moment.” Fernandez said about opening the Hunt Valley location of The Mint Leaf. “This is a little behind the other location.”

When The Mint Leaf was looking for another location, they thought that Hunt Valley was a favorable place and good for business so once they got an offer that was suitable to them, they settled. Six months later they finished construction and opened for business. Ever since, they have been standing strong as a landmark to the Hunt Valley Towne Center

Bulls find success towards end of season

The fall sports season is winding down, and it’s county championship time for many teams. Varsity boys’ soccer, varsity and JV field hockey, JV football, varsity boys’ and girls’ golf, badminton, varsity volleyball and JV volleyball, boys’ and girls’ cross country, and cheerleading are all the teams that competed in the County Championships.

Badminton player, Andrew Chung (’22), was very excited to play in the County Championship for his team.

“I think we’ll make it to the county championship final for doubles.” Chung said. Chung was the second seed in the county championship for badminton.

Boys and girls cross country competed in the BCPS County Championship on Saturday October 19th.

The boys varsity team got third in team score on the 5000-meter run, with Sean Flynn (’20), Duncan Troy (’20), and William Holbrook (’20) getting top 25 times. The boys JV team also got third in team score on the 5000-meter run, while Michael Schmidt (’22), Hudson Jones (’22), and Kyle Turnbaugh (’22) got top 20 times.

The girls cross country also had success in the county championship. The varsity team got second place on the 5000-meter run, on the backs of Caroline (‘21) and Meghan Benda (‘23) getting 5th and 6th in times. The JV team also got second place on the same run, with the help of Megan Warrenfeltz (’23) getting third in the race, with a time of 21 minutes and five seconds.

Katie Martino (’20), captain of the varsity field hockey team, has been playing varsity field hockey for three years. The field hockey team won a thrilling game against Dulaney in four overtimes and won in the greatest fashion: a shootout.

“It was probably the greatest game I’ve ever played,” Martino said. The Lady Bulls will be playing North Harford in their first

state tournament game. They’re looking to make the state championship for the second straight year.

The JV football team made the county championship for the second year in a row and looks to finish with only one loss on the season. The final games are against Eastern Tech and Sparrows Point.

“The last two games will be a breeze, and we’ll definitely make it to the county championship,” Parker Noone (’22) said.

Noone is a starting offensive lineman for the Bulls and is looking to have two county championships in his two seasons on the JV team.

The girls golf team won the county championship on Wednesday, Oct. 23, behind the top 3 score of Martha Kaestner (’21). The girls and boys golf teams will combine their best players to compete in the state tournament.

Brady Hammann is a senior on the varsity boys’ soccer team. The varsity team lost in a heartbreaker, two to one in overtime against their rival, Towson High School.

“Even though we lost, we still played an amazing game.” Hammann said.

The Bulls were playing most of the game one man down after Will Frasier (’20) got two yellow cards and got penalized.

The girls’ varsity volleyball team won in an amazing match against the Dulaney Lions. Varsity captains Emma Clark (’20) and Lily Gaffney (’20) led their team to victory. The team finished the season on a 6-3 record and look to continue their success into the state tournament.

With the success of the bulls in the county championships, the varsity bulls’ teams look to keep that momentum into the state tournament.

Spirit Club strengthens student section

The relatively new Spirit Club has shown to have a great impact on the attendance of several different home sporting events.

Starting in the 2017-2018 school year, Spirit club has grown by selecting two spirit captains for each grade, one boy and one girl, to spread awareness of school events to their classmates. Appearances on the morning announcements and promotions through their Instagram account, @herefordspiritclub, bring more attention to the fall sport games so more students know to attend.

“The recognition has been gradual, but by gaining responsibilities, such as pep rally, we’ve become a bigger influence [on the students]” Spirit Club leader, Katie Conover (’20), said.

After doing fundraising over the summer with a mini golf tournament, Spirit Club has started this school year with more money, allowing them to make new purchases like the Brutus the Bull costume to advertise for sporting events. This has benefitted their club by bringing them more attention during football games and pep rally.

Spirit Club has been assigning a theme to every game they advertise to try to increase the school spirit and to bring both the under and upperclassmen together. Previous themes have been USA, camo, and maroon-out. Advertisements are mainly on Instagram so it can appear on people’s feeds multiple times to remind them about the games.

“I think all the school spirit has made a really unified environment where we all can be together and cheer,” Maddie Magliocca (’23) said.

Brutus, making an appearance at this year’s pep rally, has been at all home football games, encouraging attendance as well as hyping up the student section. Students dress for that night’s theme and are eager to take pictures with him to try to be featured on his Instagram page, @brutusthehhsbull.

“I think [the themes] encourage more people to attend the sporting events, which makes the games more fun to go to since a lot of people are there,” Emily Ready (’21) said.

Having a bigger student section not only hypes up the students participating in the theme, but also encourages the players on the field.

“The football team loves having a larger crowd on the bleachers and it always helps us play better with the support of our classmates,” senior football captain, Gavin Walter (’20), said.

Compared to last year’s idea of spirit points, the different themes of the games have resulted in bigger crowds. Last year students were split into two spirit groups: white and maroon. In order to gain points for your team, you had to attend games, but this idea was not as successful as this year’s.

While fall sports have come to an end, spirit club plans to continue to advertise winter sporting events.

“We try to advertise most to all games,” Conover said. “Especially the ones players reach out to us with ideas for themes and pictures to advertise.”

Athlete of the Month:

Drew Turnbaugh leads the cross country team to success

Drew Turnbaugh (‘20) has been on the varsity cross country team for all four years and has been a captain for the past two.

After breaking both of his arms while playing rec soccer in the eighth grade, his unfortunate injury opened a new opportunity for Turnbaugh.

“I couldn’t play soccer, but they would let me run,” Turnbaugh said. “I turned out to be kind of okay at that.”

Since then, Turnbaugh has turned to running – starting from when he joined the eighth grade running club to now.

Along the way, Turnbaugh had support from his family.

“My older brother really got me into running,” Turnbaugh said. “[He] threw open my door every day in the summer to force me to go out and practice.”

Turnbaugh has been a strong member of the team with a 5K personal record time of 17:14 and three-mile time of 16:45, some of the best times on the team.

One of his strengths is being able to thrive in level courses instead of hilly courses.

“I’ve always tended to do better on more level courses,” Turnbaugh said. “Some guys are better at the hills, but that’s always kind of been my weaker part.”

The overall team aspect of the sport is very important to Turnbaugh. Aside from practices and meets, the team spends much of their time together during the summer and in their free time.

“Cross country is a fun time; I’ll miss the team,” Turnbaugh said. “We hang out a lot beyond just practicing and it gives me stuff to do during the summer and the weather is nicest during cross country.”

Some of the activities the team would do together included pasta parties and going out to dinners with each other.

One of his favorite memories from his years on the team was when Will Reider (’19) arm wrestled his coach, Adam Hittner, and, as Turnbaugh described, “got destroyed within two seconds.”

As for his future, Turnbaugh has talked to a few division III

coaches regarding running, but he ultimately predicts that he will be participating in running on the club level in college.

Turnbaugh and his fellow teammates have been working hard for their senior season for years.

“This group of seniors have worked for a long time to try and make the team something that we could actually be proud of,” Turnbaugh said. “Everyone [on the team] actually has a passion for running, so we’re really focused this year.”

Turnbaugh runs alongside his teammates at a league meet hosted by Hereford. He lead the pack with teammates Sean Flynn (‘20), Duncan Troy (‘20), and Jacob Robertson (‘21).

Athletes participate in signing day for collegiate sports

Nov. 13, 2019, a day that will stick with the senior class athletes for many years to come.

Signing day, the day students, soon to be collegiate athletes, sign contracts declaring their dedication to a school’s program. Hereford hosts this ceremony in the library for class of 2020 athletes committed to college. Collegiate divisions include Division I, Division II, and Division III colleges.

Sports vary from horseback riding to softball, and soccer to lacrosse, which is the sport with the most commits.

The athletes committed to play women’s lacrosse include, Anna Brandt (US Military Academy West Point), Katie Blair (University of Mary Washington), Chloe Parker (Rhodes College), Lindsay Posner (Towson University), and Lindsay Clarke (University of Oregon).

The following athletes will be playing men’s lacrosse: Jake Furman (Washington College), Caulder Carr (Hood College), and Jake Zanotta (Baldwin-Wallace University).

Field Hockey commits include Katie Martino (York College) and Grace Noone (Frostburg State University).

Courtney Butz will compete in Track and Field at Bucknell University.

Reese Harden will be playing women’s basketball at Messiah College.

Carly Stevens (Goucher College), Emily Arnold (Washington College), and Jillian Mallon (Misericorda University) will be playing women’s soccer.

These athletes have worked hard to make their dreams come true. They have made many sacrifices, dedicating countless hours of training both on and off the field, and fought endlessly for

their spot on the team.

“I really look forward to getting a good education and being a part of great lacrosse team,” Furman said.

Playing that last game with your high school team, which you may have played on for four years, that last game with the friends you grew up and always played with, can be emotional. The fact that you’re leaving your friends and school to continue with your career elsewhere can be rough. However, this can also be a very exciting time.

“I will really miss all of my friends and my teachers at Hereford, but I’m excited to play at the next level,” Noone said.

Zanotta has a similar feeling.

“Going into the school instantly having a group of friends and having a group of people that will care for you and be a part of you really helps get settled into college,” Zanotta said.

Over their four years here, the class of 2020 has been a part of many county, regional, and state championship teams, adding to the banners proudly displayed in the gym.

“For the three out of the four years I’ve played field hockey we won counties and I’ve been a part of three regional championships and that was a really great experience,” Martino said.

Saying goodbye to these seniors is tough, but their teammates wish them well and are excited to see them accomplish great thigs at the next level.

“Action” Jackson takes over Baltimore The Baltimore Ravens are in the midst of a somewhat renaissance. There has been a revival of the proud franchise and football-loving city.

By Sarah Dickerson Purple Fridays are back, Reporter Mondays are consumed with discussions in the classrooms about the previous game, and Sundays are devoted to the Ravens.

The reason for this comeback is a 22 yearold quarterback named Lamar Jackson. While most 22 year-olds are frantically trying to pay off college loans, find a half-decent job, and learn how to afford to eat, Jackson is leading the Ravens to an electric 8-2 start that has given them a strong hold on the AFC North Division.

Through week seven, Jackson has accounted for more total yards than 14 other teams have, according to Bleacher Report. His talents were put to the test against the New England Patriots. Jackson showed up to play and led the Ravens to 37-20 victory over the once undefeated Patriots. Fans are impressed with him, and excited to see where he will take the Ravens this season. “[Jackson] is already helping the Ravens and it’s only the beginning of the season,” Charlie Suchy (’21) said. “He is the most dynamic quarterback in the league and will make this season the best the Ravens have had in a while.”

Lamar-mania has taken over Baltimore, as he has received unwavering support from his teammates.

“I feel like he has a chance to be the greatest to ever do it,” running back for the Ravens, Mark Ingram, told the Baltimore Ravens Instagram account.

Sabia (‘20) describes Jackson as someone who “brings something to the team that nobody else can.”

Jackson has earned himself an immense amount of respect from Ravens fans, creating a stronger passion for cheering on the team.

Jackson took over the starting job halfway through a mediocre season last year when quarterback Joe Flacco exited with a knee injury.

Jackson did not look back, leading Baltimore to a 6-1 regular season record and an AFC North Divisional Title. Although Flacco had become a leader to the Ravens and a favorite amongst fans, Jackson’s stats were proving a promising performance from him in future games, something that Flacco was starting to lack.

The debate as to who would be the starter for the 2019-2020 season was quickly put to rest when General Manager Eric DeCosta traded Flacco to the Denver Broncos, signaling to the rest of the National Football League (NFL) that Jackson was the future for the Ravens.

While the move to trade Flacco had clearly presented itself as the best option, it was not easy for fans to let him loose.

Flacco led the Ravens to their second Super Bowl win in 2013, winning Most Valuable Player (MVP) honors in the process.

However, after a collection of mediocre seasons, stagnated offensive drives, and abismal early-season performances, the Ravens had no choice but to let him go.

Then came “Action Jackson,” who has raised the hopes of all fans and cemented Baltimore as a contender once again.

“[Jackson] is a phenomenal athlete and I believe he will lead us to another Superbowl,” Caulder Carr (‘20) said.

Baltimore is back to being a proud football-town with a revolutionary new quarterback, and also raising postseason hopes and the spirits of the city.

Anquan Boldin decides to retire as a Raven

Anquan Boldin played in the National Football League (NFL) for 14 years representing four different teams, the Cardinals, Ravens, 49ers and Lions, but there was only one team he would retire with. On Sunday, Oct. 14, Anquan Boldin announced he would be retiring as a Raven.

Boldin played with the Ravens for three years, amassing a total of 186 catches for 2645 yards and 14 touchdowns as a wide receiver. He also had eight post-season games, producing 616 yards, 38 receptions, and 6 touchdowns. Boldin was part of the 2013 winning Super Bowl team, the same year Ray Lewis announced his retirement.

Boldin came back to Baltimore on Oct. 13 to watch the Ravens play the Bengals, and to be announced as the ‘Legend of

the Game’. Running out of the tunnel wearing his #81 Ravens jersey, and carrying the new Ravens shield, Boldin was greeted by a cheering and ecstatic crowd.

Having been his neighbor during his time in Baltimore, I was lucky to have a chance to speak with him about his time with the Ravens and his retirement.

“Coming back out of that tunnel brought back a lot of memories. Throughout the week in the NFL you spend countless hours getting ready for battle on Sunday night,” Boldin said. “Walking out of the tunnel is always the calm before the storm, and to know that you have 65,000 screaming fans cheering you on brings chills to your body.”

To him, the Ravens and the Baltimore fans were just something he couldn’t leave behind. Coming back to Baltimore was such a heartwarming experience for him.

“I wanted to retire a Raven because Baltimore accepted my family and I unlike any other city had.” Boldin said. “From the very first day we felt loved and genuinely felt like people cared about us, and that meant a lot.”

When Boldin was traded to the Ravens, he and his family took on a big transition, a transition which the city of Baltimore made easy for him. At the time he and his wife were soon to have their second child. A typically stressful, yet exciting time, was made easy by the community of Baltimore.

“The first day we arrived I remember being invited to a BBQ and having a great time with great neighbors.” Dionne Boldin, Boldin’s wife, said.

Anquan and his family had many great memories in Baltimore, part of the reason he wanted to retire as a Raven.

One of his fondest memories while in the NFL was winning the 2013 Super Bowl and celebrating with the large parade around the city.

“Being able to share that moment with the entire city is something I will never forget.” Boldin said.

Now that Anquan is retired, he says he will spend most of his time being a husband a father. When he’s not at home with his family, he’s working on social justice issues. He wants to make the world a peaceful place free of inequality.

“I want to spend the rest of my life fighting for equality for all, no matter the race, religion, gender, or economic status.” Boldin said.

Anquan has been fighting this issue for several years now, speaking at fundraisers, signings, interviews, and many other personal appearances.

After all he has done for his teams, he has decided to wrap it up with the NFL and retire to focus on family and improving the community.

As Boldin said, “Once a Raven, always a Raven.”

The student lot: What common cars say about their drivers

As you’ve most likely seen on a haphazard (but intriguing) Buzzfeed quiz, your car can say a lot about you.

The trusty minivan is reserved exclusively for soccer moms, the Subaru Outback for the outdoorsy, granola folk.

But the stereotypes don’t stop there. Here at school, the types of cars that students drive are distinctive as well as telling.

You have the trucks and souped-up, all-terrain vehicles sporting flags and bumper stickers galore. The safe, standard Honda CR-Vs and Toyota Highlanders parked alongside their neighboring shiny Jeeps. And, of course, you can’t forget the smattering of luxury cars that no high school-age, inexperienced driver should be entrusted with, but their parents give them anyway.

One common car seen in the parking lot is a Jeep Wrangler.

Growing up, what young, innocent, preteen girl doesn’t want a white Wrangler—or any Jeep, for that matter? It’s a middle school rite of passage, and there are a lucky few that are blessed with this as their reality once they get to high school.

Grayson Welsh (‘20) is one of those select few. He drives a 2007 Jeep Wrangler Sahara with added aftermarket m o d i f i c a t i o n s for the winter and a skeleton.

“I take pride in what I drive because I’m really lucky to have such a nice car and I feel like it’s necessary to be proud of it and enjoy it,” Welsh said.

As Welsh and all other Jeep drivers know, a large part of owning a Jeep is the inevitable ‘Jeep wave.’

The Jeep wave, according to Urban Dictionary, is the general acknowledgement of another Jeep owner out on the road that comes with its own rules and regulations—some of which include waving one handed outside of the body tub when the top is off, never waving to Hummers, and, most importantly, each and every Jeep driver is responsible for upholding the sacred tradition of the Wave.

As stated in ancient legend, the Jeep wave began after

World War II. During the war, the Jeep was often used to transport materials and carry the wounded to and from the front lines, and so when the soldiers returned home, many wanted to own one for themselves. Out on the road, fellow vets would wave to one other as a sign of respect for the time that they had served, and the gesture stuck.

Two Jeep owners, Welsh and Courtney Butz (‘20), both participate in the Wave and understand its importance in fostering a connection within the community.

“The Jeep wave signifies to me a sense of unity and family with all the people that drive [a] Jeep, even though they may not know each other,” Welsh said. “It’s cool to have random people only connected by the car they drive wave at each other.”

Butz agrees with the sentiment.

“I think it’s just really fun to wave to other people who have the same car as you,” she said. “You feel like you’re [a] part of a club or something.”

But Jeep isn’t the only car who sponsors a clublike community of drivers. So does another typical student-owned car, all parked together along the “L” in the student lot: the trucks.

“I love my truck,” Jacqi Needle (‘20) said of her white Dodge Ram. “I think it says who I am in a big way and it’s nice because I drive a lot and it’s very cozy.”

Truck culture differs from Jeep culture in many ways.

For one thing, it’s louder.

While the sleek Jeep looks nice driving down the road, it doesn’t take up the entire lane and part of the double-yellow line.

Trucks are huge both in size and popularity; go for a five-minute drive and it’s almost guaranteed that you’ll see at least three.

The pick-up transitioned from “humble workhorse to fancy toy,” as described in Smithsonian Magazine, and it transitioned fast.

What used to be exclusively for farmers and blue-collar workers is now considered an American staple and even a lifestyle statement.

Drive a pick-up and you’re probably a middle-class father of three who has to hold on to his slowly dissipating masculinity somehow.

Why not purchase a big, manly vehicle?

If you don’t fall into this category, however, don’t fret.

The truck family will still gladly accept you.

As Wyatt Parks (‘20) put it, “I didn’t choose truck culture, truck culture chose me.”

Parks drives a Ford F-250 with a V10 engine, full cab, and an 8-foot bed. According to him, it’s “as big as they come.”

“I think [my truck] tells people to respect my authority on the road because everyone gets out of my way,” Parks said.

Even Honda CR-V drivers can appreciate the power of a truck.

“They are great for transporting large objects and can still fit four to five people,” Gianna Patti (‘20) said. “I really like how they look.”

All things considered, your car says a lot about you.

Whether it’s the make and model or how many Chick-Fil-A and McDonalds wrappers you have neglected to properly dispose of, your car is often an indicator of your personality. Make a good first impression and clean out your backseat.

Take one look at the student parking lot and you will automatically get an idea of the types of people that attend this school. From pick-ups and Jeeps to Priuses, RAV4s, and even BMWs, the cars that students inherit from their gracious parents are assorted, and with them, the associations surrounding each one.

Light City and the Baltimore Book Festival unite for a two-week long celebration

The combination of two of the Baltimore Office of Promotion & The Arts’ marquee events, The Baltimore Book Festival and Light City, resulted in a nearly two week long celebration coined “Brilliant Baltimore.”

Light City, the part of the festival exhibiting the LED creations, presented music, interactive art installations, a drone light show, perfomances, and the central Light Art Walk. Along with these installations, the book festival portion of the event hosted multiple conferences, Q&A sessions with authors and contributors, and workshops throughout the week, allowing for open discussions concerning contemporary, innovative, and historical issues.

The festival opened Friday, Nov. 1, and ran through Sunday, Nov. 11th with different events, showcases, and installations spanning throughout its entirety. Some of these include “Shrooms,” giant LED mushrooms created by artist Amigo & Amigo (pictured bottom left), “The Canopy,” an inflatable sculpture triggered by 12 surrounding bikes, created by artists Can-Duit and Pneuhaus (pictured bottom right), and “Between the Lines,” huge illuminiated stylistic fishing rods near the water, created by artist Pitaya (pictured top left). All of these installations were intended to exhibit some sorrt of meaning for their audience, though they were all up for interpretation.

AVID program participates in anual Festival of Trees

Festival of Trees is a three day holiday celebration featuring you’ll be having a blast. Opening as early as 10 a.m at the Maryland State Fairgrounds, people are invited to enjoy the festival that supports the sponsor, Kennedy Krieger Institute, an educational non-profit that provides support for those with learning and other disabilities.

The event not only features trees but also elaborate gingerbread houses, wreaths, and every Christmas decoration in between.

There are also attractions such as live holiday entertainment and “SantaLand”, an indoor place for children to make crafts, play games, visit Santa, ride ponies, and ride trains.

Festival of Trees has attracted 50,000 attendees and raised nearly $1.2 million for Kennedy Krieger Institute since its beginning in 1990. The festival has also raised more than $23 million supporting and spreading awareness towards disabilities of all types.

Our school’s AVID seniors support this cause by creating their own themed tree and submitting it to be purchased, raising money for Kennedy Krieger Institute.

“Our idea for this year is the roaring ‘20s so it will have feathers and beads,” four-year AVID member, Sophia Karas (’20) said.

The AVID family has been waiting all three years to create this tree together. AVID’s trees have been bought every year since they began to submit their tree masterpieces six years ago. The event has held on as tradition that excites the AVID seniors every year.AVID’s tree raises around $175 for Kennedy Krieger and is a “rite of passage” for the senior classes.

“It encourages teamwork a sense of community,” AVID teacher Laura Blama said. “AVID advocates support towards service opportunities and this is a fun way to do that.”

AVID will prep for the tree in class together. The Sunday before Thanksgiving after grabbing breakfast together, as an ‘AVID family’, will get their tree ready for show at the Fairgrounds, exemplifying how the AVID classes are brought together to support their community.

Photographer Haley McCullough branches out into video editing

Haley McCullough (’20) has a passion for videography and photography. Currently, she is making the senior video and sports videos for the different athletic teams at the school.

She has been making videos since she was in middle school and hopes that she will continue to make videos that others, and herself, can enjoy.

“I’ve been making videos since seventh grade, but then I really got into it around my freshman year,” McCullough said.

At this point she has a clear vision for the senior video, but more inspiration continues to come to her. With her videography work, she hopes to capture the best parts of her class.

“It’s going to be a long video highlighting the best parts of the year,” McCullough said. “I did a lot for pep rally and Spirit Week, and it’s going to be a lot of sports, and the seniors just doing their thing.”

As well as making the senior video, she also takes clips of different sports, while they are playing in a game, and makes video edits. The first edit that she made was for the boys’ varsity soccer team.

“I thought the video she made was amazing. I’ve always wanted a video like that for our team but I could never find the person to do it. Our whole team loved it,” Will Frasier (’20) said.

McCullough’s knack for videography brings smiles to people that have been featured in her videos.

“It was super intense and the viewer got a great showing of our team. Between the music and the quick changes in players it was very fitting to our team,” Frasier said.

It’s not just soccer that she is promoting. McCullough is making more videos for other sports teams. Currently, she is working on a video for the girls’ varsity field hockey team. Her creative and inspiring videography skills are showcasing the tal-

ents of several athletic teams.

Students are not the only ones who appreciate her work. Her photography teacher, Geoffrey Grace, also has positive things to say about McCullough.

“She is not generic and boring. She’s energetic, dedicated, and responsible with an extra spark of investment that shows in her work,” Grace said.

Lily Gaffney (’20) has a similar opinion.

“She has a very positive and energetic personality that helps her to be a photographer. I love the filters and edits she puts on my pictures. She has an eye for knowing what looks good,” Gaffney said.

McCullough’s passion inspires her to go to any extent in order to get the perfect shot.

“One time she made me climb this really tall tree and bend backwards and it was really scary,” McCullough’s sister, Ellie (’22), said.

Haley documents moments that she knows she will never live again. Having pictures or videos makes those memories something that she can look back on to remember the good and fun times of her life.

Along with videos for school, Haley creates them for fun and for herself.

“I did one just the other day with just my sister walking through the pond, and [in the summer] when I go places, I do these huge summer videos at the end of the year,” Haley said.

Haley’s skills continue to flourish and grow as she makes more and more videos, and she hopes to continue with this passion after she graduates.

Stefan Traska (’20) comes from a Ukrainian family that loves to celebrate the culture, they often get together with fellow Ukrainians in the region. There they travel together, going to Wildwood, New Jersey for a beach week, and attend debutante balls. Upon returning from these events, Traska would share his experience with others.

“I told all my friends about Ukrainian culture and they got into it,” Traska said. “We started bringing the flag everywhere; it’s fun, and my friends get hype when they see it.”

Traska’s friends became interested in the culture, so to promote it, they bought an enormous Ukrainian flag off of Amazon, and the rest is history. Since then, the flag has been seen at the varsity field hockey county championships, almost every boys’ soccer games, and at pep rally, both in the stands and carried out by the boys’ soccer captains.

In the student section at games, people see it, and after getting over the initial confusion of a giant Eastern European flag being flown in their faces, their spirit increases, which creates more energy on and off the field. In past years, students have agreed that school spirit hit an all-time low, but recently it has been rising. “[Counties] was one of the best field hockey games I’ve ever seen in my life; it was phenomenal, the spirit was great,” Athletic Director Mike Kalisz said. “At the end of the game, I actually grabbed the flag and waved it myself.”

Much of the energy on the field of any game can be attributed to the cheers coming from the student section. Players may be more encouraged to succeed if they know that classmates are just Photo by Sarah Borton as excited about the game as they are.

Hereford Zone Community Group spreads false rumors

It’s 2019. Everyone is on social media and if you’re not, you’re most likely participating in some sort of boycott. The younger generations use YouTube, Snapchat, Instagram, or Tik Tok every day. The older generation on the other hand has made Facebook and NextDoor their online home.

You know how adults like to know everything, well some go above and beyond, wanting to know everything about everything. A common topic of discussion is users’ children and their schools. One user, posted asking about the “drug bust.’’ It was one kid, which is not what I would call a “huge drug bust. Frankly, not being the guardian of the suspected kid, its none of their business. Imagine being that kid’s mom, scrolling through Facebook just to find a bunch of 45-year-old women trash-talking your child.

As one Facebook member suggests, “drug sniffing dogs need to be on school parking lots!” this got a lot of positive attention, other parents claimed it should be a weekly search, while another simply said ‘I agree’ followed by the 100 emoji. Adults at their finest.

Facebook is not the only place where the middle-aged women have taken over the internet. They have also gathered on NextDoor, an app for community communication.

Northern Hereford Zone is one of these groups where members can post items they are selling, jobs they need done, or, my personal favorite, “crime and safety.” Obviously, it is very important to share actual criminal activity or things to look for in our area.

However, it is significantly less important, almost irrelevant, to post about the “jewl” you found in your kid’s bedroom, and just for the record, its J-U-U-L. Parents and teachers talk to their children constantly about their online footprint and how much their appearance online matters. Yet here they are, gossiping about high school students online. Why does being older excuse them from the same standard they expect from us?

The users commenting outrageous things about having drug sniffing dogs “throughout the school, inside and out, [on] random days and unannounced weekly,” don’t even have kids currently enrolled here. Why do these adults spread rumors about us, while not having a child here that they are trying to protect? To me it just seems like pointless intervention.

Unfortunately, the rumors that these parents create on Facebook don’t end there; they sometimes end up on Principal Joe Jira’s desk.

“The problem is there is no way to check if information is accurate; misinformation comes out and then it [spreads] like crazy.” Jira said. “I never communicate on it but I monitor it to be aware of what is floating out there.”

The internet is a helpful tool and does a lot of good. These platforms allow people to get and share information very effectively. Yet sometimes people can get a little carried away with the advantages it offers. Meaning that people truly can hide behind a screen and say whatever they want, talk about whatever they want and be whoever they want. People can hide behind a screen and say whatever they want to without having to face what they are talking about. Even as full grown adults what you put online still matters.

“Ok, Boomer”jokes are not ageist attacks

In the news, there has been a great deal of talking heads complaining about the newest catchphrase of millennials and Generation Z. The short and sweet “OK, boomer” has become a common reply to members of the baby boomer generation who voice their beliefs on subjects which younger people are more passionate about, such as climate, the economy, and college. This begs the question, why is there so much animosity for boomers?

First, let’s define the term “baby boomer.” It is generally accepted that the generation encompasses those who were born between 1945 and 1964. This includes a wide range of people; however, we can make some generalizations about them. Baby boomers were born and grew up in post WW-II America, meaning they were the benefactors of one of the greatest economic booms in the world, and the youngest of them entered the workforce or went to college in the 1960s.

Now that we have gotten our defini-

tions out of the way, we can begin to dissect just how good boomers had it. The first and most glaring area is their cost to attend college. It is hard to come by data for the cost of college in the 1960s, but we do have reliable numbers from the Department of Education starting from 1980.

In 1980, the average cost of a year in a public four year college, adjusted for today’s dollars, was $9,438, meaning it was likely even lower for baby boomers, who went to college in the 60’s and 70’s.

Compare this to today, where the average cost for those of us entering a public four year college for a year is $23,872.

This is not to mention private universities, whose sticker prices can soar as high as $70,000. As someone who is going to enter college next year, I find these numbers disheartening, seeing as boomers got an education at public universities for the cost of a community college today.

Baby boomers also had it easier in terms of both buying and renting houses and apartments. In 1960, the median home price in today’s dollars was $98,672 and the median cost of rent was around $558. Compare these numbers to today, where the median home price in 2017 was $205,100 and the average rent was $1,358.

When boomers rush to defend their legacy, they often bring up hardships they

had to go through. To be fair, when they were entering the workforce, they had to deal with the oil crises and the recession in the early 80’s. While it may be true that baby boomers did face economic troubles in their later years, the Great Recession’s effects on millennials entering the workforce dwarfs any of the problems boomers had to endure.

Just ask the International Monetary Fund, who declared the Great Recession to be the worst economic downturn since the Great Depression. Nobody faults those who went through the Great Depression, yet millennials aren’t afforded these same protections.

Millennials graduated during the Great Recession with massive amounts of student loan debt—student loan debt which baby boomers didn’t have in the first place. They then found it challenging to find jobs, which made it difficult to pay off their debt following graduation, ultimately forcing them to delay major milestones in their life such as buying a house.

So, instead of crying ageism and giving platitudes about “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps,” recognize the economic conditions which have led to the animosity for baby boomers.

The meaning of Thanksgiving needs to change Each year we’re subjected to wait a whole month to sit down with family and friends, eat canned cranberry

By Jason Kraft sauce, and somehow Opinion Editor be thankful for it. And, even though we have strayed from the pilgrims’ original traditions—such as eating swan and eagle—their past still lingers and affects us today.

For many, Thanksgiving is a grim and depressing reminder of the cruel treatment towards indigenous people by many generations of Americans. It feels like we’re living a lie, as we eat squash and turkey, pretending that our relationship with Native Americans was and always has been harmonious since the beginning.

Elementary schools teach of the kindness of the Puritans to share their food, when in reality they were starving and needed the food from the Native Americans to survive. And after the three-day feast, the Puritans and Wampanoag didn’t stay friends for long, most likely because of colonists’ constant land-taking and disease-spreading.

It feels wrong to celebrate a fabricated story of growth between two diverse groups of people, despite the very real and terrible tragedies we’ve enacted upon Native Americans since the

first Thanksgiving. To name a few: the Indian Removal Act, the Wounded Knee Massacre, and their exclusion from many aspects of the Bill of Rights until 1968 have all targeted, killed, and put natives at a disadvantage to other Americans. So why would we celebrate a story that is blatantly trying to cover up the fact that early colonists screwed over the Native Americans?

What many need to realize is that our ancestors’ actions were theirs and not ours, and if we have grievances with the precedents that they have set then it is our job to create new ones. It’s clear that Thanksgiving is pretty messed up, and many have come to face that and are taking the initiative to abandon the colonists’ history to make a new meaning for themselves.

“It does occasionally bother me,” said Timmy Holbrook (’21). “It certainly should take on a new meaning for us, in that we should appreciate the natives who are the only reason Plymouth was able to survive in the first place.”

Our new meaning and purpose for Thanksgiving ought to be derived from the name itself, a day to give thanks to only those in our past and present that deserve it, rather than a celebration of Thanksgiving’s history.

“The name is so historic and fitting to the holiday. Even though the name finds its origin in the era, the name itself isn’t involved with the acts of the colonists,” said Kyle Turnbaugh (’22).

It’s time to take a breather and give thanks to each other without the atrocious actions of our ancestors looming over us.

But of course, we can’t forget about taking off school and indulging in gravy-smothered food.

Black Friday shopping puts capitalism in a bad light

I feel like I need to preface this by saying that I am so unbelievably poor and I love to see a good deal. I make solid minimum wage and I have a spending problem, yet still, if I see something on sale, I’ll likely buy it. That being said, are we just going to pretend like America waking up from a food coma at 5 a.m. the day after Thanksgiving to full-on brawl in a Target over half-off electronics is normal?

My contempt for Black Friday, honestly, is deeply rooted in the fact that I’m not really a morning person, but that’s barely the issue. Once I got over getting up before the crack of dawn to spend money I don’t have, the prospect of Black Friday sales still didn’t sit right with me. I’ve worked opening shifts at work before, and that has consisted of me getting to one unnamed chicken-themed fast food restaurant at five in the morning. Even without the boomers screaming over holiday deals, it was insufferable, so I can only imagine how my fellow low-wage earning employees in retail must feel.

In the criminal trial against Black Friday, Exhibit A is the treatment of the workers of stores that run the sales. It’s unlikely that most employees will be off on Thanksgiving or the day after. I know in my experience, workers are scrutinized for requesting time off over the holiday.

Cashiers in retail stores are already seldom allowed to sit down, and they’re likely working long shifts with little time for breaks. Pair this with Karen and Susan fighting over the latest air fryer or a PS4, and it’s basically a PTA fundraiser from Hell in aisle 14 of a Big Lots.

On the same topic of disadvantaging and exploiting lowwage workers, I’d like to get woke for a second. Imagine you have a pair of Jordans. You really, really want to be a basketball star; you’re garbage at basketball, but, hey, maybe these Air Jordans will help. Pondering if these shoes will be worth the price, you start to hype these J’s up. ‘They’ll make me good at basketball,’ you think, so you buy them. What you didn’t take into consideration in the purchase of these, honestly really ugly, shoes, was the labor that went into making it.

Did you think about the child in the factory being paid pennies to make your Jordans? No, you thought about the ‘Jordan mentality,’ or the spirit of endurance. These shoes don’t have the Jordan mentality— they’re shoes; they can’t produce thoughts. You made an unethical purchase for a made-up concept. You do know that practicing endurance is free, right?

This is called commodity fetishism. Capitalism assigns made-up meaning to these products to make the unethical consumption of them seem worth it. Now, go to a store on Black Friday and watch people go crazy over these products that have been commodified. Not only does it exploit Americans working in retail, but also the global workers creating these goods.

Serious impact on others aside, let’s look at this from a self-love standpoint. I’m all for treating yourself, don’t get me wrong. However, the line between indulging and wasting money is a fine one, and Americans find themselves walking it constantly, especially during the holiday season.

According to a survey by British analytics company, YouGov, 51% of people who are already in debt are willing to add more to it from holiday shopping, as if a toaster oven and hundreds of dollars worth of debt will fill some sort of void deep within.

Look, I can’t judge. If you’re into being trampled in a Kohl’s at 5 a.m. after sleeping off a food baby, then so be it.

Some people celebrate the holidays by spending time with friends and family, and some get into the spirit by disadvantaging themselves and others— but that’s hardly my business.

U.S. abandonment of Kurds sends a bad message

Everyone remembers the classic and downright heart-wrenching betrayal of Mufasa by Scar in the Lion King, right? Well if you don’t, I’m sorry to inform you that you didn’t

By Andrew Dotterer Reporter have a childhood. Now you may be thinking, “What does the Lion King have to do with the United States abandoning its allies?” Well it all comes down to betrayal.

With the recent withdrawal of troops from northern Syria by President Trump, the U.S. has abandoned a key ally in the fight against ISIS. Without U.S. troops in the region, the Kurds are vulnerable to a blatant attempt at ethnic cleansing by Turkey. I can’t help but think that this will be another genocide that Turkey will come to deny—Armenian genocide anyone?

Think about it this way—you and a friend, whom you’ve worked with before, decide to fix up a car. You do most of the work while your friend supplies some of the parts. Once it’s fixed, you decide to take it for a spin, but what you didn’t know was that your friend cut the breaks before you got in. You and your friend are speeding toward a brick wall and your friend proceeds to light a match, set your car on fire, and then jump out—leaving you to crash into the brick wall in a fiery wreck.

For those who are curious, you were the Kurds, your friend was the U.S., and the brick wall was Turkey.

The worst part is Recep Erdoğan, the president of Turkey, told Trump that he intended to invade Syria to create a ‘safe zone’ along the Turkish border. Trump gave him the green light to commit genocide by withdrawing troops from Syria. I don’t think we should be in Syria, but a more effective and careful withdrawal of troops is necessary to prevent another genocide orchestrated by Turkey.

With no one else to turn to, the Kurds were forced to broker a deal with the Syrian government to ensure their safety from Turkey. The U.S. turned a key ally in the Middle East away to the Russian-backed Syrian government.

Russian President Vladimir Putin then negotiated a

deal with Turkey for a ceasefire to allow the Kurdish people to remove themselves from their homeland. So not only did the U.S. allow Turkey to slaughter our Kurdish allies but then stood by and allowed them to be forced out of their homes.

President Trump quickly lifted sanctions on Turkey, put in place only days prior, and claimed the U.S. would no longer play a role in Northern Syria. But he found it just to place even more soldiers in Saudi Arabia, a country that has proved more untrustworthy than the Kurds by greatly contributing to an immense famine in Yemen and murdering Washington Post columnist Jamal Khashoggi.

In a presidency that continues to distance us from our allies, it will be increasingly harder for countries to trust the U.S. in future dealings. Trump claims we have great influence in the world, and specifically in the Middle East, but if we have no allies to work with and decide to go it alone in the future, we will find ourselves having no influence on a global stage and somehow less trustworthy than Russia.

New AP test rules are only for padding pockets Besides the class schedule, one big difference has been looming in student’s lives this school year: the changes to the AP test.

For those who don’t know, the College Board has changed

By Joan Steinly-Marks Reporter how students pay for and sign up for AP tests. AP tests are taken in May, and until this year students have signed up for the exams in March. Now, students must sign up for the exam in October, after only a few weeks of school.

How College Board can expect students to sign up for exams when they barely know what the class is about can only be explained by the other changes College Board has made. Now, if you sign up for an exam after October 31, you have to pay a $40 late fee, and if you cancel an exam or don’t show up for it, you still have to pay $40 in addition to the original $94.

The College Board has pushed AP students between the devil and the deep blue sea; if you aren’t sure about the exam, you wait to sign up and pay $40; if you don’t want to pay the late fee, you sign up early; and if you later find that you aren’t ready or you don’t want to take the exam, you shell out $40 anyways.

I searched for half-an-hour and found nothing about what the money from the fees will be used for, besides padding College Board’s pockets.

To be fair, College Board did introduce one change that most people like this year: AP Classroom. AP Classroom is a website hosted by the College Board that boasts tools and quizzes to help students prepare. The site has instruments to help stu-

dents understand content, complete progress checks, and answer practice questions that imitate the AP test.

The College Board didn’t pull these changes out of nowhere.

For the 2018-19 school year, they “piloted fall exam registration with 40,000 students.” In this study, they tested three groups, minorities (excluding Asian), low income students, and women in STEM. The data showed that the number of students scoring 3 or higher moved in all demographics. The percentage of minority students who scored 3 or higher increased by 12%, by 20% for low income students, and 14% for female STEM students.

However, the stats given by the College Board don’t make a lot of sense to me. Did College Board pay for all 40,000 students to take the test or were the students paying? Also, the College Board left out a crucial detail: Did all 40,000 students from the test run actually take the test? Additionally, how were the students selected? It seems that many details about this preliminary test haven’t been revealed.

My theory, with the limited information given, is that many of the aforementioned low income, minority, and/or female STEM students didn’t take the exam when they had to register in fall. Many of these students are often discouraged or scared off from taking pricy exams like these, as evidenced by the lowered price of AP exams—$32 for low income students. Only having students who feel confident in their abilities as students take the exam will surely result in drastic increases in the percent of students who achieve a score of three or above.

I may be disappointed with the new changes to AP tests, but I wouldn’t call myself surprised. The College Board has set up another source of income to pool into their expanding wealth, all while making students somehow even more stressed out.

The smell of fiery cinnamon, potent ginger, warm cloves, and fresh nutmeg can only mean one thing – Pumpkin Spice Season has arrived. The sights, smells, and tastes make pumpkin spice season a truly magical time of the year.

The start of the season varies each year, but it typically begins in early September with the release of lattes, scones, and the forever iconic pumpkin cream cheese muffin, and it ends at the start of the new year – or whenever it becomes culturally unacceptable to consume pumpkin treats.

Aside from the return of the iconic Starbucks latte, Pumpkin Spice Season is something bigger. It triggers a period self-reflection and marks the be-

ginning of a major turning point in the year.

When fall rolls around we often come to realize how little time is left in the year. This year we dig even deeper as the decade comes to an end. Instead of looking at the past 12 months we look back at the past ten years. We think of our highs and lows, struggles and triumphs, and successes and failures.

Even if you aren’t a pumpkin spice stan, there is still an opportunity to participate in the festivities, as the spirit of the season is truly about bettering one’s self, not feasting on carbohydrate-filled pumpkin scones.

“In my opinion, fall is the best season and the season I look foward to most because it’s a great time to relax inside and watch movies because it starts to get cold. I like fall because Halloween is one of my favorite holidays and all the haunted houses open and scary movies come out. I also like going to the Ravens game with my friends and family.
