YOU WILL BE ENRICHED, FULFILLED AND WELL-PREPARED FOR YOUR FUTURE. In HCS Sixth Form, our students enjoy an education that is nurturing, engaging and challenging. With a focus on the individual, we seek to stretch our students academically, enrich their experience through their extra-curricular pursuits, and prepare them for the real world through the HCS Diploma and our Futures Department.

We have high expectations of all our students and create a focussed working environment with small class sizes and dedicated Sixth Form study areas to ensure each student reaches their own potential.

Throughout their time in Sixth Form, students benefit from the tailor-made support of a wide network of staff. Our tutoring team of ten specialists, five UCAS Co-ordinators, our newly appointed Head of Futures and two Heads of Year are there to help from the first day of Year 12 to A-Level Results Day and beyond.

Whether you have been with us for some time or are looking to join us in Year 12, we get to know you and your story so that we can meet your needs and help you to achieve your aspirations. Our Sixth Form is not about academic excellence alone, and whether our students go on to apply to Oxbridge, Russell Group universities or follow the ever-expanding apprenticeship pathways, our Sixth Form Team knows how to develop character, confidence and connections to shape brilliant futures.

EXPERT TEACHING & DIGITAL INTEGRATION OUR TEACHING STAFF ARE DEDICATED PROFESSIONALS WHO USE THEIR PASSION TO ENTHUSE OUR STUDENTS AND WORK HARD TO ENSURE THAT EACH INDIVIDUAL ACHIEVES THEIR BEST. Sixth Form students are usually taught in double periods, allowing time for deep exploration of their subjects. Small class sizes ensure all pupils are engaged and each individual is stretched and challenged to perform to the best of their ability.

In Year 12 and 13, we place a great emphasis on furthering students’ independent study skills and selfmotivation, while continuing to provide the support they need to flourish. For some pupils, our Learning and Study Support team offer invaluable advice and guidance. For others, such as our academic scholars, weekly meetings ensure they extend their academic abilities and are well prepared for their future paths.

For all students, our Digital Strategy allows us to deliver the very best teaching and learning experience.

Platforms such as Microsoft Teams Assignments and OneNote have transformed how pupils submit work and receive feedback, and allow for varied and collaborative approaches in the classroom. This is just the start of an ongoing journey that has opened up unlimited opportunities, all of which will enable our students to acquire the skills to thrive in a rapidly-changing higher education and employment landscape.

QUICK FACTS STUDY SPACES The Sixth Form centre is divided into dedicated study zones according to our students’ learning styles and preferences. This includes a silent study area and breakout collaboration spaces.

AVERAGE CL ASS SIZE The average class size in Sixth Form is 6-10 students allowing for more one-toone time with the teacher. It also means classes progress more quickly and pupils form a strong bond.

THE SIXTH FORM CENTRE IS THE HUB OF SCHOOL LIFE FOR OUR OLDER STUDENTS, OFFERING DEDICATED SPACES FOR QUIET STUDY AND RELAXED SOCIALISING.

DEDICATED SIXTH FORM CAFÉ Students make use of Café 1384 for breakfast, lunch and snacks with a broad menu of hot meals, healthy options and treats on offer.

With hot drinks on tap and two comfortable seating areas it is the ideal space to relax and make new friends.

QUIET STUDY AREAS Many students take advantage of the study centre during study periods, with individual booths to help focus the mind and separate areas for collaborative working. Others choose to use departmental study areas and Sixth Form art studios.

The Head of Sixth Form is based within the Sixth Form Centre and is on hand to support and get to know our students individually.

CENTRAL LOCATION Located on Church Street, the Sixth Form Centre allows easy access to the town centre at lunch times and after school.

Academic achievement forms just one part of the Sixth Form experience at HCS. To ensure our students leave us real-world ready, each will embark upon a two-year HCS Diploma course that is made up of the four areas below. The Diploma is a formally recognised qualification, accredited by the University of Buckingham and forms part of the ‘drop down’ menu option for our students to include in their UCAS applications.

1 ELECTIVES

These short courses are designed to equip our students with the skills, aptitudes and experiences they will need to thrive in the real world. Modules are led by external speakers and HCS staff, covering everything from coding to cooking, and managing personal finances to interview and presentation skills.

2 PROJECT

Students undertake a project in an area of their choosing. They might learn a new language on Duo-Lingo, become a referee, set up a club for younger pupils or run a large-scale event.

Pupils can also use existing commitments such as the EPQ and Duke of Edinburgh Award as the project for their Diploma.

3 CULTURAL & PERSONAL GROWTH

To broaden horizons and support their cultural and personal growth, students enjoy the opportunity to read around and beyond their subject areas, or study for music and drama examinations.

4 COMMUNITY & EXPERIENCE

The final strand of the Diploma allows students to give back to the local community, gaining skills in leadership and service through work experience, paid or voluntary work.

PSHE The Year 12 PSHE programme is largely delivered by invited expert speakers and covers issues such as: • Values • Organ and Blood Donation • Eating Disorders • Teenage Driving • Role of Magistrates • Revision Skills • Rape and Consent • University Finance • Sexual Health • Binge Drinking • Homelessness • Mental Well-being • Careers Advice • University Admissions EXTENDED PROJECT QUALIFICATION A number of students choose to take the EPQ - a research project, where students plan, research and deliver an independent project. It is worth half of the UCAS points of a full A-Level. It allows students to develop invaluable independent study skills while developing their knowledge of a subject about which they are passionate.

POSITIONS OF RESPONSIBILITY In addition to the roles of Head and Deputy Head of School, many of our senior students become form mentors and monitors.

Through these positions of responsibility and roles within CCF and sports teams, students develop their leadership, communication and organisational skills.

Working with and supporting our younger pupils allows students to grow in maturity and develop empathy. While working closely with teachers and representing the school with prospective parents, our students learn to be highly effective communicators.

From our CCF parades and debating society, to large-scale drama productions, our pupils learn to seize the moment, have the confidence to challenge themselves and grow as an individual. In addition to our sports activities and music ensembles, we have a busy and varied timetable of lunchtime and after-school clubs exclusively for sixth form students.

Many Year 12 and 13 students choose to continue with CCF and Duke of Edinburgh Awards, which offer exceptional opportunities for personal development. They also enjoy a whole host of trips across the globe, from visiting the CERN laboratories in Geneva, to the trading floors of New York and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the Northern Lights in Iceland.

Whatever their interests, our broad programme of sports, extra-curricular activities and international travel opportunities ensures that our pupils’ time in the Sixth Form at HCS is unforgettable.

In Year 13, support includes a designated period each week for UCAS preparation and mock interviews with specialists in the student’s chosen field. We also have a highly experienced physiotherapist in school offering physiotherapy treatment, rehabilitation, injury prevention strategies and pitch-side management. Our Athletic Development Programme helps keep pupils in top physical condition, too.
