HCS CELEBRATES HEREFORDSHIRE’S BEST RESULTS Hereford Cathedral School students have enjoyed the best A-Level results in the county this year.

Over a quarter of grades have been awarded an A*, the School’s best ever outcome in public examinations. Over 57% of grades awarded were A*/A compared with a national average of 36.4%.

This summer’s results have been impressive across the board, with excellent outcomes in all subject areas. The Maths department boasts superb results this year with almost three-quarters of pupils achieving A*/A grades, while in Further Maths two-thirds of grades achieved were

TOP GRADES FOR TOM, DANIEL & SARAH

Seventeen exceptional pupils achieved more than 3 As in their subjects. Tom S gained four A* grades in Chemistry, Economics, Maths and Further Maths, Daniel P achieved A*A*A*A and Sarah G bagged three A*s. Daniel feels the support from his teachers has helped him achieve his full potential: “The support has been really good in the sixth form, not just teaching me exactly what I needed for the course, but also pushing me a little bit further when I’ve been interested in certain topics and reinforcing my knowledge.”

Daniel plans to read Maths and Physics at the University of Warwick while Sarah has won a place at the University of Bath to study Business. Tom plans to take a gap year before studying either Economics or Maths at university.

CAMBRIDGE BECKONS FOR SEYI AND BEREN Outstanding individual achievements include Seyi A and Beren G, both of whom have achieved their dream of heading to Cambridge University this autumn.

Seyi (right) who achieved a clean sweep of A*s in Chemistry, Maths, Further Maths and Physics, will read Engineering with a choral scholarship at Corpus Christi College, while Beren (left) plans to read Mathematics at Trinity College having gained A*s in Maths, Further Maths and Physics, and an A in French.

Seyi said: “I’m really excited and so thankful to all of the teachers for helping me along the way.”

ASTOUNDING ARTS

The Arts subjects have seen another year of superb results. Exceptional drama student, Maia C-O (right), has won a place at the University of Exeter. Having achieved an A* in Drama and starred as Lady Macbeth on The Courtyard stage earlier this year, this will allow Maia to take her drama studies to the next level.

Another talented pupil, Esme S, will be going on to read Music at the University of York this autumn and is thankful for the support she has received at HCS: “The teachers have been amazing and really supportive throughout the exam experience and the covid lockdowns, especially in Music. I’m very sad to be leaving but excited for the future.”

Alongside her studies, she has led the School symphony orchestra as principal violinist, sang the soprano line in the School’s internationally acclaimed Cantabile Choir, Chamber and Chapel Choirs, as well as leading her fellow pupils as a senior monitor, all of which have enriched her time at the school. “My best memory of HCS has been the music, singing in the choirs, playing in the orchestras and the feeling of camaraderie you get from doing that.”

Beren who enjoys a diverse range of activities including badminton, rowing, climbing and chess, was similarly grateful to his teachers: “The teaching and support in sixth form at HCS has been really good.

Whenever I needed help or had any concerns, the teachers were always there.”

SUPERB OUTCOMES IN HCS PUPILS’ GCSE EXAMS Hereford Cathedral School pupils celebrate another year of excellent GCSE results, with 58% of all exams awarded the highest grades of 9-7 (A*/A). This compares with 26% grades 9-7 nationally. Nearly a quarter of all grades at HCS have been awarded the top grade 9.

Results were impressive across the board, with excellent outcomes in all departments and the Sciences, English Language and Maths being of particular note. Twenty-one exceptional pupils achieved all 9-7 (A*/A) grades, with 8 pupils boasting all top grades 9-8.

Drama and Music departments have achieved great things again this year. In Drama almost two thirds of students achieved grades

9-8, while in Music nine out of 12 pupils received a grade 9.

Dr Michael Gray, Headmaster, congratulated the students on their endeavours through what has been a challenging period: “Our pupils have achieved some fantastic results and we are all absolutely delighted. These wonderful outcomes reflect the hard work that our Year 11 pupils have put into their studies; they have exhibited resolve and determination amidst the challenges of the pandemic.

NOA BAGS 11 GRADE 9s

Noa was one of the eight HCS pupils who achieved a grade 9 in Further Maths this year - great news for the HCS Maths department!

Noa S, one of the school’s top performers, achieved an incredible eleven grade 9s in his GCSEs and is looking forward to studying Maths, Further Maths, Physics and English Literature in the sixth form. He said: “I’m looking forward to having more freedom [in HCS sixth form] and small classes where you can discuss things in depth with teachers and other people who are also interested in the subject.” Noa (right) was one of eight pupils that gained a grade 9 in Further Maths. He also achieved an unheard-of 148 out of 150 in his challenging English Literature paper.

KEMI & BRONWEN’S TOP-GRADE SUCCESS Kemi A (above, left), a member of Hereford Cathedral School’s acclaimed Cantabile Girls’ Choir, achieved ten grade 9s and two 8s in her GCSEs and is looking forward to the next chapter: “I’m excited to go on to HCS Sixth Form to study Maths, Economics and History, and I’m also really looking forward to the development in the Sixth Form café.”

Keen linguist, Bronwen D (pictured above, right), is particularly proud of her French result, a subject she hopes continue at A-Level. “I got ten 9s and two 8s. I’m planning to stay on at HCS Sixth Form to study Chemistry, Biology, French and hopefully Latin as well.” She was grateful to her teachers for putting her on the right path for the next stage of her studies, adding: “Our teachers were always on hand…they were really helpful, especially during the stressful exam periods.”

Hereford Cathedral School’s Drama and Music departments once again achieved excellent GCSE results this year. In Music, nine out of 12 pupils received a grade 9, while in Drama, almost two-thirds of students achieved grades 9-8.
