Saturday’s Republican Party candidate forum proved to be a success from both sides of stage for those on it and those in front. Candidates for all but one of the eight local races on the GOP ballot in the March 6 primary were in attendance – including all the candidates in the county’s five contested races – for the event spon-
sored by the Deaf Smith Republican Party. The only candidate to not attend was incumbent Precinct 2 County Commissioners Jerry O’Connor, who declined due to illness. O’Connor is one of three county candidates running opposed. The others are incumbent Justice of the Peace Karen Boren and Chris Strowd, who is running for the 222nd Judicial District District Attorney seat being vacated by Jim English’s retirement. “I thought it went well,” county GOP chair and fo-
rum moderator Jared Blankenship said. “I was very pleased with the turnout. All the candidates were enthusiastic about the opportunity. “I know it was a bit intimidating to some of the candidates, but they understood the importance of the situation for the opportunity to face the public and ask for their votes.” One consensus county voters received from the PLEASE SEE FORUM | 10

Hereford Police offciers are continuing their search for two suspects believed to have taken part in an armed robbery Thursday on Avenue H. According to a press release from Hereford Police Department (HPD), officers were called to the Allsup’s convenience store on the corner of Avenue H and East 15th Street on Thursday in response to an armed robbery. The release stated that two suspects entered the location at approximately 10 p.m. One reportedly brandished a firearm and ordered the people in the store to the floor. The suspects then reportedly took an unknown amount of cash and merchandise before fleeing to an unknown location. Voters will definitely have a choice when it comes to deciding the Deaf Smith County Precinct 4 Commissioner’s race in the upcoming election. A field of four candidates – that features the incumbent, another
farmer/rancher and two retired teachers – have tossed their hats into the ring and will face off on March 6 in the Republican primary. Seeking his second term in office, incumbent Commissioner Dale Artho is being challenged by Monty Smith, Harold Sides and John Nino. “It is important voters have a
choice,” Artho said in starting his opening statement by reading his statement for running in 2014. “I want continue to work for Deaf Smith County in government, be a good steward of the people’s money and deliver the best local government I can. “Those are the words I used four years ago, and the words are the
same now.” As with candidate opening statements with all at the forum, virtually all of the allotted time was used providing background and biographical information. In terms of facing the unique challenges Precinct 4 presents PLEASE SEE PRECINCT 4 | 3
