New ambulance upgrades EMS By C.E. Hanna BRAND Staff Writer Community needs and technology changes make emergency medicine a consistent challenge, but Hereford Regional Medical Center (HRMC) looked to surmount those obstacles with the acquisition of a state-of-the-art Braun ambulance. The chassis boxes on the
current HRMC ambulance fleet date back to 2008-09, while HRMC’s Emergency Medical Service (EMS) van is a 2014 model. “It doesn’t seem like a lot of years, but when you consider how hard their driven and what they have to go through, then you almost have to double the miles,” HRMC EMS Director Marcos Castro said. According to Castro, the actual ambulance boxes date back to 2001 and rising maintenance costs necessitated the $154,154 (more than $5,000 under budget) vehicle. PLEASE SEE EMS | 2A

Following an approval process of 7-21 days, HRMC EMS expects the ambulance to be in service by next week. “I’m really excited about it, and so is the crew,” Castro said. “It’s something we feel proud of and the community can feel safe in when we came to pick them up. “Ultimately, it’s the community’s truck.”

AMARILLO – Ruth Ellen Murphy Neal Gray, 93, died Friday, Sept. 2, 2016 in Hereford. A graveside service was held Monday, Sept. 5 at Citizens Cemetery in Clarendon with the Rev. Kirk Watson officiating. A memorial was also held Monday in Park Place Towers in Amarillo with Jerry Hopkins officiating. Ruth was born Oct. 30, 1922 in Paducah, Ken., to J.W. and Ora Lee Murphy. She was a longtime Panhandle resident. She graduated from Amarillo High School in 1941, then attended Amarillo College and worked at Amarillo National Bank. She married Gayle Neal in 1945, moved to Dawn and was active in the Dawn Music Club, Study Club and Dawn school. She moved to Hereford in 1959, then moved to Clarendon in 1963, where she was the owner of Tumbleweed Gift Shop and Children’s Clothing. She moved to Amarillo in 1976, where she lived until her death. She worked at Madison's, Kitchen
Gallery and Little Brown House for 20 years as a bridal consultant at each store. On Sept. 4, 2003, she married Johnny Gray of Gray's Studio. = They would have celebrated their 13th wedding anniversary on Sept. 4, 2016. They were friends since high school, married at 80 and 83 hoping for four or five years and were blessed with 13 wonderful ones. Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Gayle Neal; brothers Joe and Pat Murphy; a sister, Louise Murphy Payne; a son-inlaw, Stephen Coneway; and a granddaughter, Leah Ruth DeLaney. Survivors include her husband, Johnny Gray of Amarillo; a son, William Everett "Bill" Neal and wife Carolyn of Tomball; two daughters, Nan Carol Neal Coneway of Hereford and Carrie Lee Neal DeLaney and husband David of Kingsville; a stepdaughter, Patti Wills and husband Don of Amarillo; nine grandchildren; 14 greatgrandchildren; two stepgrandchildren; five stepgreat-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. The family request memorials be sent to Cal Farley's Boys Ranch or Park Place Towers in Amarillo. Arrangements were under the direction of Robertson Funeral Directors of Clarendon.

Rainy day mishap A sport utility vehicle (SUV) and a semitrailer collided at the U.S. Hwy 385 and U.S. Hwy 60 intersection shortly before 10:30 a.m. Wednesday. According to officials, there were no injuries, but the SUV’s driver was transported to Hereford Regional Medical Center to be “checked out.” The Hereford Police Department said that the SUV’s driver will likely be cited for failing to yield the right of way.

Trump is no true Republican What does it mean to be a Republican? For generations, the answer had been clear: A belief in individual liberty. Free markets. Strong national defense. But what does it mean to be a Republican today? With Donald Trump as the party's new standard-bearer, it's impossible to say. Even before Trump's name reached the top of the GOP presidential ticket, the party was pulled in different directions. Many Republicans held fast to the good-governing principles of the past, while a growing wing of the party yanked hard from the right to force a conscripted definition of conservatism. Inexplicably, the presidential candidate who emerged from that ideological tug of war was the one who thumbed his nose at conservative orthodoxy altogether. Trump is – or has been – at odds with nearly every ideal the GOP holds dear. Donald Trump is no Republican and certainly no conservative. Individual liberty? Trump has displayed an authoritarian streak that should horrify limited-government advocates. This impulsive, unbridled New York real estate billionaire and reality-TV star wants to deport people who were born in the U.S. and don't meet his standard for loyalty. He has proposed banning all Muslims from entering the country, even those escaping Islamist rule, and won't rule out creating a database of Muslims already living here. His open admiration of Russia's Vladimir Putin is alarming. Free markets? Economic conservatism? Ronald Reagan once said that "protectionism is destructionism." Trump, on the other hand, has called the Trans-Pacific Partnership "a rape of our country." Businesses who invest overseas, he says, should pay a hefty fine on imports. (We'll leave aside for a moment his hypocrisy in pretending that investing in hotels abroad, as he does, is somehow different from a manufacturer investing in foreign car factories.) His protectionism would likely force the U.S. into trade wars, increase the deficit and sink the U.S. economy back into a recession. Trump's idea of fiscal conservatism is reducing expenses by financing mountains of soul-crushing debt. Strong national defense? Trump pledges to make our military "so big, so powerful, so strong that nobody – absolutely nobody – is going to mess with us." But what does he want to do with that military? He says he supports killing the families of Muslim terrorists and allowing interrogation methods "a hell of a lot worse than waterboarding." And if the military balks at obeying such orders? "If I say do it, they're gonna do it," he says. His isolationist prescriptions put sound bites over sound policy: Invite the Russians into our elections. Bomb the Middle East into dust. Withdraw from NATO. It's not easy to offer a shorthand list of such tenets, since Trump flips from one side to the other, issue after issue, sometimes within a single news cycle. Regardless, his ideas are so far from Republicanism that they have spawned a new description: Trumpism. We have no interest in a Republican nominee for whom all principles are negotiable, nor in a Republican Party that is willing to trade away principle for pursuit of electoral victory. Trump doesn't reflect Republican ideals of the past; we are certain he shouldn't reflect the GOP of the future. Donald Trump is not qualified to serve as president and does not deserve your vote. By the 1930s, vegetable farming on a commercial scale was underway. Potatoes were the chief vegetable crop at the time; however, it was into the next decade before this new industry was well established. AUSTIN – Texas Education Commissioner Mike Morath on Aug. 23 announced the Texas Education Agency will fine the company that delivers and administers STAAR – State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness – with $5.7 million in liquidated damages. Morath also directed the company, Austinbased Educational Testing Services, to invest $15 million for a total of $20.7 million. The $20.7 million, according to the TEA, “addresses various logistical issues encountered by students and school systems during statewide STAAR administration in the 2015-2016 school year.” “I believe this combination of liquidated damages with an additional financial commitment from ETS reflects the correct balance of accountability for the recent past and safeguards for the future,” Morath said in an Aug. 29 news release. ETS holds the state contract for the administration of highstakes testing for grades 3 through 8 and high school STAAR end-of-course exams. That contract was awarded in 2015. Rep alternatives State Rep. Jason Isaac, R-Dripping Springs, on Aug. 29 called for reform “in light of more bad news about Texas’ standardized testing system, the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness.” Isaac pointed to the $20 million fine assessed to Educational Testing Services by the Texas Education Agency, which he said is “possibly the largest such fine in Texas history.” “I’m pleased that the Texas Education Agency has taken significant steps to improve STAAR, but it’s clear there is still more work to be done. School districts should not be hampered by an inefficient and ineffective system. Adding a dose of free-market philosophy to education by allowing a variety of standardized test options can only drive down costs and improve quality. “I hope my colleagues will join me when the 85th legislative session convenes in seeking transformational changes that will ensure that testing is a benefit, not a burden, to Texas’ students, teachers, and families,” Isaac added. There’s nothing like the taste of victory – just ask the Hereford Whitefaces. The Herd snapped an eight-game losing streak that dated back to last season Friday with a 38-14 win over visiting Borger. “I was proud of the effort,” Hereford coach Don DeLozier said. “To be down, bounce back and go up double digits says a lot. “The intensity and emotion they played with showed through. I was real proud.” The Whitefaces took a punch Friday, then delivered several in arguably their best overall game in a year. After Borger went up 7-0 in the first quarter, the Herd answered with a 10play, 67-yard, 4:24 march. Adrian Hernandez’s 1-yard run and Carlos Gallegos’ PAT tied the game 50 seconds into second period. The Herd took the lead for good on a 4-yard, Seth Dixon TD run with 53 seconds left in the half and

However, the Hereford Whitefaces are staring at that reality as they prepare to host Pampa on Friday. The best news of the lot is the Herd is coming off its first win in a year. From there, the weekly routine has been effectively turned upside down with school being closed Monday for Labor Day and the remainder of the week dotted with homecoming activities. “The usual way we do things has been adjusted,” Hereford coach Don DeLozier said. “The demeanor of this team is pretty even keel. They enjoyed Friday’s win over the weekend, then they went back to work Monday. “Our role in homecoming is simple – win the game. That is what we can do

Lady Herd's Chandler Vogel (11) dished out a total of 30 assists in Saturday's sweep of Lubbock Cooper and Levelland.
Going through a bit of a cakewalk and a tougher row to hoe, the Hereford Lady Whitefaces took a pair of volleyball matches Saturday from visiting Lubbock Cooper and Levelland. Bouncing back from a four-set loss to Tascosa on Tuesday, the Lady Herd improved to 15-11 on the season. The match with Levelland proved a chance to get warm as the Lady Whitefaces swept their way to a 3-0 victory – 25-12, 25-19, 25-16. For the first time this season, someone besides Meagan Ellis was top scorer as Macy Gudgell led the Lady Herd with 8 kills. Ellis finished with 7. Gudgell also delivered a team-high 3 aces as the Lady Whitefaces recorded seven for the match. Chandler Vogel again led the assist list with
10, while Alyssa Vallejo added 9. Vallejo came up with 9 digs to share team honors with Danielle Pena. Brianne Bartels finished with 8 digs, while Ellis had 6. The win over Cooper took four sets – 25-21, 2628, 25-12, 25-12. Ellis flexed her muscle offensively and defensively by posting a match-high 24 kills and team-high 13 digs. Jenna Lowrey and Gudgell added 8 and 7 kills, respectively, while Pena and Vogel recorded 12 and 10 digs, respectively. Vogel doled out 20 of the Lady Herd’s 38 assists with Vallejo adding 15. The Lady Whitefaces were back on the court Tuesday with a visit to Borger. They open the District 3-5A season on Saturday when they host Canyon at 1 p.m

“We have to be intelligent defensively – get pressure on the passer, cover and stop the run,” DeLozier said. “These are all things we
have and are continuing to work on, and we keep getting better.” Kickoff for Friday’s homecoming tilt is set for 7:30 p.m. at Whiteface Stadium.

If judging “American Idol” seemed an unexpected move for Harry Connick Jr., here comes his next one. The singer-actor joins the ranks of weekday talk-show hosts as the syndicated “Harry” premieres Monday, Sept. 12 (check local listings). Effectively succeeding Meredith Vieira, who fronted NBC Universal Domestic Television Distribution’s pre-
vious bid in the genre, Connick says he deems the New York-based program “an opportunity for me to do all of the things that I really love to do sort of under one roof. I get to play music. I get to entertain. I get to meet incredible people, both celebrities and everyday folks who are absolutely amazing. I also get to experience the entertainment business in a new way. “I’ve always liked to try to do new things,” Connick
adds. People asked me the same thing when I signed up to do ‘Will & Grace’ ... ‘What made you want to do that?,’ or ‘What made you want to star on Broadway (in concerts, plus “The Pajama Game” and “On a Clear Day You Can See Forever”)?’ I love performing, and so far out of everything I’ve done, this seems to be the most in line with probably who I am, I think. I’m not playing a character. I get to go out and work with immensely
talented people and meet incredibly talented people and share it with the people that I play for when I go out across the country on tour. That just seems like a dream job to me.“ As for others who have had similar jobs, “I’ve been up there with just about everybody,” Connick notes of having been a guest of numerous talk-show hosts, “and there are people that I consider to be the best in the business. I think David
Letterman, as a person who would ask questions and interact with a guest, was incredible. (I also like) Michael Parkinson in England. Ellen (DeGeneres) is fantastic. Oprah was fantastic. I definitely have my favorites, but I’ve also learned a lot about what I love about the process as a guest and what I don’t like so much.” A winner of three Grammys and two Emmys, Connick maintains he wants as
much spontaneity as possible on his show. “I tell all the publicists and anybody that’s going to be on the show, ‘Man, if you don’t want to do a pre-interview, it’s my job to know everything there is to know about you ... so don’t worry about that, and we’re just going to have a conversation.’ And the response I’m getting from a lot of the talent is, ‘Wow, that’s pretty cool.’ ”

By Jay Bobbin Though “Churchill’s Secret” largely is about a stroke that was kept from the public, Winston Churchill is one of the most famous diplomats in history. How did you go about playing him? Well, I knew about Churchill, of course, and I know what he did during the war and all of that. I’d forgotten all about that until I was offered this part ... and then, I had to jump and read a few books about him, just glancing at them, but mainly stick to the text (of the script). And that’s what happened. And I went into a house, a room, and we went through it and lit the fire inside me that knew what to do at the beginning. It’s rather difficult to explain how all of this happens. You’ve acted in many Shakespeare plays. Does that help you with a role like Winston Churchill? Well, it just helps you grow (your) acting. You get used to it. I mean, I was

at the National Theater years ago, and at the Old Vic. I did loads of Shakespeare, and it became part of my process. I enjoyed it, and I knew I had to do it. And that just continues as you grow older. And as it comes on to this, Winston Churchill is not much different than doing Shakespeare in a way. It’s a very complex dialogue. I don’t really give it much thought. I go from one job to another, and I remember what I did last time and the mistakes I made, and I keep trying to make it better and better and better. You’ve done much television work lately, from “Luck” to “The Casual Vacancy” to “Fortitude.” Are you happy with the variety of projects you’ve had? Yeah. I love it. I love just going out to work every day or whenever I get offered (roles). I wouldn’t care how many of them – if I get another 20. It’s part of my life.

By George Dickie What attracted you to the role of Dr. Belinda Brown in HBO’s “Vice Principals”? Well, Danny McBride and Jody Hill and David Gordon Green. I love their work. I find it uncomfortably nuanced. It reflects things that oftentimes we don’t like to see or think we’re seeing. And the character was so well-written and was given so much thought and fully-realized, three-dimensional in their world, and I just could not pass up an opportunity to try my hand at comedy in this world, which is dramatic but isn’t, so it was an easier transition for my theatrical mind to say, “Oh, this is just a scene that ends up being funny.” But the writing was laugh-out-loud to me reading it. It was one of those scripts that when I read it, I kind of was like, “Oh my gosh, I can’t believe it. Is that really hap-

pening?” And actually laughing and going, “I shouldn’t be laughing at this. This is horrible but it’s so ridiculous.” So that was a big draw for me. How did you like filming in Charleston, S.C.? I’ve kind of fallen in love with the city. I was unclear about how I’d feel about it going in. Clearly there were things happening in the world – there was the North Charleston shooting – and I just said, “Oh my gosh! Do I really want to be in this state and work?” And I didn’t know what the community was like but Charleston, the people were lovely. I love how they embrace their history, both good and bad, and really kind of face it to the capacity they can. And the food, it goes without saying, that is hands down some of the best food I think we have to offer in the country. Oh gosh, the food!

In Wednesday’s season opener, the bakers are challenged to make Italian donuts using basil and a mystery ingredient. “You think of Italian pastry or Italian dessert and you instantly think of tiramisu or cannolis ...,” Elkin says. “So it was like a donut shaped in a cannoli but without that crispy cannoli dough, and then they were piped with really awesome Italian meringue. So it lent itself really, really well to this episode.” Also interesting for Elkin was watching the bakers incorporating basil into a dessert. “I think the bakers we had on set for that episode had never really baked with basil before,” he says, “so we saw some candying of the basil, which was really, really cool. We saw, from what I remember, two different styles of candying, so like an egg-white style and then we saw like an actual simple syrup kind of candying effect going on there. So it was interesting to use those two as contrasts when the judges were deciding who was going to go home. So a very cool episode. It wasn’t just straight up cannolis and Italian meringue. It was a lot more than that.”

What does scorpion taste like? “It’s a whole mental block when eating bugs – you’ve got to get over the fact that you’re crunching through an exoskeleton,” says series host Josh Elkin. “Scorpions sort of have this, believe it or not, this maple-y kind of like aftertaste to it.” But that wasn’t the star of that particular show. “The coolest thing is ants,” Elkin says. “Ants have this like super-sour aftertaste and instant taste on your tongue. And if you want to hide it and you want to sort of use ants, which when you use them like in a cake, look like poppy seeds. ... You think you’re eating a poppy-seed cake. Very interesting. You know how you see like little black dots moving all through a cake or pastry of some sort? Same type of thing except it’s ants.” And for the record, Elkin says all the desserts were “incredible.” Season 2 continues the format of Season 1, as three expert bakers battle it out over two rounds of challenges that test their skill and creativity. Their wares are then sampled by a rotating panel of three guest judges – among them Zane Caplansky, Duff Goldman, Sharone Hakman, Elise Strachan, Eddie Jackson and Laura Vitale – and
