INTERVIEW: DAVID HENTY

The Art of the Master Copy Here & Now went to meet local celebrity artist, David Henty, at Cloud Gallery.

DAVID HENTY IS AN ARTIST with a world wide reputation, built on his amazing ability to reproduce the work of other artists. He was always able to draw, copying from books, and then ‘livening up’ canvasses from his father’s antique business by adding detail precisely in the style of the original.

Following a spell inside, for forgery, twenty five years ago, David rediscovered his passion for art, and embarked on what became his career as a copyist.

In a lively and enthusiastic explanation of his method of working, David revealed the extensive research he undertakes into each artist, to learn to see the world through their eyes; he immerses himself in books and videos, looks into the contemporary history, investigates paint, canvas and frame, and absorbs as much information as available about the artists and their lives.

David described how he will make numerous exploratory drawings and paintings to uncover each painter’s nuances, quirks, particular characteristics; he talked about how Modigliani produced drawing after drawing in preparation, and then launched onto the canvas in paint, working furiously for hours, sustained by absinthe and hashish.

The process David follows in order to feel confident about making a copy of a great painting is one of reverse engineering, of deconstruction; he doesn’t embark on a work until he has applied intense interrogation of every aspect of the work and the artist. Currently he has a full size copy of Caravaggio’s ‘The Taking of Christ’ underway, but has put it away and he comes back to it every now and then to see what it needs to make it perfect; it won’t leave his house until he is happy with it. At over 4 feet high and 5 1/2 feet wide, it may be that his wife hopes it will be soon.

Cloud Gallery director Andrew Stott told us about the recent exhibition of David’s work in their Chichester gallery. It was immensely popular, and a lot of work was sold. Andrew said he was struck by the emotional response people had to these copies of famous

paintings, as though people who loved the original could scarcely believe that they could actually have a real, painted version, beautifully framed, of their own. This intense response reflects the passion and immense talent David invests in each painting.

David is a guest speaker at Indigo restaurant at the Ardington Hotel on Thursday 22 November in their ‘Food for Thought’ lunchtime series.

This is a chance to hear a master craftsman talking about his extraordinary career and new-found celebrity, while enjoying an excellent lunch in good company.

NOVEMBER ART ROUND-UP As winter draws on, artists in Worthing are getting ready for Christmas events in our galleries and studios – look out for news and listings in this and our December issue.

MEANWHILE, SOME OF NEXT YEAR’S big events are beginning to stir; Worthing Portrait Artist of the Year Competition 2019 has launched with a Call for Entries. If you are over 18, and live within a 20 mile radius of Worthing, you can enter a portrait to compete for selection. Twelve artists will be selected to take part in the

competition, which takes place on Friday 22 March 2019 at St Paul’s. The event is open to the public, who come to watch the 12 selected artists each create a portrait of one of three celebrity sitters during the course of the evening.

The event in 2018 was a storming success, so the organisers can’t wait to do it again. Thomas H Green, the sitter for the winning entry by Steve Mort-Hill, said he loved the experience; “a chance to sit and contemplate life, relax, and watch art come to life.” It was a great social evening, lots of fun. Guild Care’s events help raise money for its 30+ community support services for people aged 5-105 living within Worthing and its surrounding areas.

FROM DEMENTIA SUPPORT, care homes, and community transport to providing carers with a much-needed break, they aim to reduce isolation and support people to live well and independently for longer.

Charlotte Bolton, Guild Care’s Community Fundraising Manager, said, “We have so many great events coming up in the

community and we encourage people to come along and join in the fun to help us raise funds for our vital services. We have events for the whole family as well as an evening soiree to dance the night away.”

Repair Café WHY A WORTHING REPAIR CAFÉ?

WE THROW AWAY VAST AMOUNTS OF STUFF. Even things with almost nothing wrong, which could get a new lease on life after a simple repair. The trouble is, lots of us have forgotten that we can repair things ourselves or we no longer know how. The Repair Café changes all that!

Repair Cafés launched in 2010 and can be found across the world.

Transition Town Worthing (TTW) recently launched Worthing’s very own Repair Café, providing a free meeting place where you are invited to repair things together with skilled volunteers, using Repair Café tools and materials. From clothes, furniture, electrical appliances, bicycles, crockery, appliances, toys. Naturally there are some things like PAT testing or knife sharpening that only the repairers would do, but it’s hoped that some people will go away having learned a new skill. And, if you have nothing to repair, you can lend a hand with someone else’s repair job.

The Repair Café runs on the last Saturday of each month. The next two are at St Paul’s on Sat 27 Oct and Sat 24 Nov from 10.30am - 1pm.

There’s a break over Christmas and the Sat 26 Jan Café is at The Friends Quaker Meeting House, 34 Mill Road, Worthing.

What kind of repairs are done each month? A list on the Facebook page (Transition Worthing Repair Cafe), provides info. And if you prefer not to queue on the day, just email ttwrepaircafe@gmail.com to book your repair in advance.

Do You Have a Repair Skill to Share? If you have a particular repair skill that you would like to share, do let the team know you may like to come along to help.

What’s the Cost? Repairs are by donation, to cover the cost of materials and other expenses.

How do you raise funding for your grants? Virtually all the funds we give out to local groups come from the 14 textile recycling bins that Worthing Borough Council have placed around the town, so we need lots of your old trousers.

Putting your old pants, socks and slippers into one of our bins helps reduce landfill and improve our community at the same time.

The condition of it doesn’t matter. Of course we’d like your twice-worn Versace, but the clothes can be faded and the sheets can be ripped. Just make sure it’s a bin with our name on it.

Who else is involved in the organisation?

We employ Naomi to administer the grants, but everyone else is a volunteer, including the trustees. We can always do with more help running the charity, so please get in touch. We have high hopes of any mention in Here & Now – me and our vice-chair both got involved after reading a request for trustees in Here & Now.

What projects have you supported recently? We supported

so many brilliant events in the summer: the Children’s Parade, Worthing Pride, Broadwater Carnival, the Rotary Carnival, Rainbow Theatre at Highdown Gardens and the Green Dreams event. We’ve funded the gymnastics, rugby and croquet clubs. We’ve bought mobility scooters, ovens, tables and musical instruments.

In 2012, Terry was diagnosed with prostate cancer. I was so shocked. He was only 67 and the fittest person I knew.

The last six months were tough. He had cancer in his skull by then. He went into hospital in early February 2017. They said they would do their best to get him into St Barnabas.

Walking through St Barnabas’ door it felt like somebody taking a weight off my shoulders.

The staff were wonderful. Everybody’s got so much compassion. He passed away peacefully there.

REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY SERVICE 11AM SUNDAY 11 NOVEMBER 2018 will mark 100 years since the First World War Armistice, and a Remembrance Sunday service and march past will take place on that day from 11am near the Worthing War Memorial, outside Worthing Town Hall in Chapel Road.

In 1919, when the local council abandoned a fund-raising scheme to build a memorial, the Worthing Gazette (now Herald) set up the Worthing War Memorial Gazette Shilling Fund. After the £1,000 anticipated costs were raised, the memorial was built and unveiled in April 1921 in front of 7,000 people.

In addition to the poppy sellers you will see around town, the Royal British Legion also has a shop at 26 Guildbourne Centre where many different items, including crosses, lanyards and bracelets, can be purchased in aid of the Poppy Appeal. n

True Heroes, Murray Hambro In 2011, Murray Hambro had to learn how to simply walk again.

However, his aim now is to travel a lot more quickly.

“Riding a superbike could seem a bit daunting, particularly given the situation,” comments Worthing-based Murray. “I’m

Murray lost both legs below the knee while serving as a Lance Corporal in the Second Royal Tank Regiment in Afghanistan in 2010 after his tank drove over a 65kg roadside bomb.

However, he now races in the Triumph Triple Challenge series on a specially adapted Triumph Daytona 675R.

someone who when I want to achieve something, I go all out and always display determination to get it done, no matter what the circumstances are.”

Whilst he admittedly has a dark sense of humour, with the word ‘legless’ embroidered on the back of his race leathers and a personalised number plate that spells out ‘no feet’ on his car, he takes his superbike career very seriously.

“I took a step back, I had to, and then analysed the situation and put in place my next challenge – to get up on my feet and walk again. There was a lot of gritting the teeth

once the prosthetics were on as it was very painful at first, but once I was back up on my feel and able to walk steadily, I was able to look ahead to what I wanted to do next,” comments Murray.

That next challenge would see Murray take up superbikes – a passion he’s had since the age of 11. However, his progression in the sport has shocked everyone. Often found at the famous Silverstone track, regarded as one of the most difficult to navigate, Murray’s peers have often described him as taking the sport ‘like a duck to water’.

“I’m just incredibly passionate about racing – plus I love the thrill of it too!” comments Murray. “Just being at Silverstone or indeed on any track, gives me a real boost.

However, the real motivation for me is to inspire others to believe that they can achieve anything. If someone reading this gets up off the couch and gets moving then I’ve done my job.”

Murray does just that as he now competes for at British

Superbike meetings for the not-for-profit True Heroes Racing team. The team is made up of injured UK Service personnel, started by a serving Royal Navy sailor after he returned from several tours of duty in Afghanistan. The team’s aim is to use competitive Motorsport as a way to restore a sense of direction and focus and prove they can compete on a level playing field with their able-bodied counterparts.

“It’s also about bringing like- minded military people back into a military-type environment, which we often miss after leaving it behind.

We want to demonstrate that against all the odds, anything is possible,” concludes Murray.

Murray has been selected for the Invictus Games, Sydney 20 – 27 Oct this year, representing the UK in 4 disciplines: Indoor Rowing, the 100m, 200m & 400m Wheelchair Racing.

A more effective vaccine for the over 65s is being offered this winter in a bid to keep the viral infection at bay.

AS OLDER PEOPLE can have weakened immune systems, they are at higher risk of suffering serious symptoms of the flu that can be life threatening.

The new vaccine could see 30,000 fewer people require an appointment with their GP, as well as 2,000 fewer admissions to hospital. Ultimately this is expected to save more than 700 lives this winter.

As well as those over the age of 65, the flu vaccine is also available free to those in groups at particular risk of infection and complications, including: children aged 2 to 3, and those in the school vaccination programme, pregnant women, adults and children with underlying health conditions (especially heart and respiratory disease) and carers.

Resilience is about our ability to bounce back from adversity - like a tree that bends with the wind so it doesn’t break. And the good news is that we can all learn to become more resilient, sometimes just by changing the way we think. For example, by pausing for a moment to check if there is a different explanation for why something just happened rather than jumping straight to negative conclusions.

Of course this is not always easy, but the more we practice finding healthy ways to cope with life’s little challenges during the good times, the better we will be at coping with the big stuff when tough times come along.

The Worthing Teen Music Scene 1964–1968 This month the Time Machine returns to the 1960s. We take the journey with local resident Denise Tayler who once “saw Jimi Hendrix for half a crown”.

Her story is also one of how music forms bonds and enriches lives. It begins in London.

BORN IN 1951, DENISE TAYLER grew up in Battersea, “very poor”, the oldest of two children (she had a younger brother). The rare spelling of her surname derives from a Dutch-Afrikaans ancestry. In

1963 the Inland Revenue, for whom her parents worked, decided to move many of their operations out of the capital. Her family were settled in Barrington Road, Goring.

“That’s where the Inland Revenue still is,” she says, “My dad was an adjudications officer and my mum was enforcement. They absolutely loved Worthing, lived there for their whole lives. If you look at that building, there’s a square bit at the top: that’s where my dad sorted out the one computer for the building. It took the whole top floor.”

Her parents may have been happy but Denise wasn’t. Now aged 13, she’d come from a London comprehensive but made it into Worthing Technical High, a grammar school (now Durrington High).

A self-confessed geek, with thick glasses, a tooth missing and a Cockney accent, she was badly bullied. Added to that, she wore a black and white miniskirt, on-trend in London but in Worthing...

“People thought I was a prostitute or something,” she sighs, “They’d never seen skirts above the knee before. It made me notorious. Then, a few months later, everyone was wearing them.”

There was another notorious girl at the school, Janice Clements, who, a year older than Denise, was dating a DJ, one of only two black guys in the area.

“I later went out with the other one,” she recollects, “I went on the back of his scooter but my mum and dad banned me from seeing him because he was black. We didn’t have sex or anything; we only went for egg’n’chips but it upset my parents no end.”

All that came later, though. Initially Denise and Janice had a terrible playground scrap, “scratching each other’s eyes out”. Denise won and, strangely, after that the pair became firm friends. Janice introduced Denise to Tamla Motown.

“When I was a kid the big thing was swing,” she remembers, “My granny and my mum used to listen to Frank Sinatra and I absolutely loathed it. I still do. Jazz upsets me. If I hear it I have to go for a walk. Then one day my mum borrowed a single, ‘Wonderful World’ by Sam Cooke. All of a sudden my family stopped swing and started to get into soul.”

Motown, then, wasn’t a huge leap. Denise began collecting cast-off singles from American jukeboxes, some now Northern Soul classics. She, Janice and friends also started attending the Big Beat Sessions at the Worthing Assembly Rooms and on the Pier, promoter Freddy Bannister’s Thursday night pop concerts.

“I was one of the few allowed out on a school night,” she says, “Mum used to say that as long as I was in by 11.00 it was OK. I’d have to get the 10.45 bus home. I left to get it even when Jimi Hendrix was in full flow.”

Denise kept the flyers for those gigs. Between the ages of 13 and 16 she spent all her paper round money seeing a who’s who of ‘60s music: Hendrix twice, The Who twice, Cream (Eric Clapton asked her for directions back to the A24), The Troggs, The Kinks, The Easybeats, The Merseybeats, Napoleon XIV (of ‘They’re Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa!’ fame), Fleetwood Mac, Arthur Brown, The Mindbenders, Dave Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick & Titch (Denise scribbled on that flyer, ‘Touched Dave and got his autograph’), The Yardbirds, Zoot Money, Jeff Beck Group and more.

She would go down the front to stake a place, her only sustenance a bottle of Coca Cola. It was usually a scrummage and she often suffered cigarette burns to her back and neck. But it was also the stuff of memories.

“I was madly in love with Jimi Hendrix,” she says, “I sold my Beach Boys album ‘Pet Sounds’ to buy the first Hendrix album. When I saw Hendrix I pulled on his red velvet bell-bottoms and he grinned at me, made eye contact. It was so loud that afterwards I was deaf for a few days. Another memorable one was The Who. Roger Daltrey spent the whole gig with his back to us, wiggling his bum. I was right near Keith Moon. He was totally off his face. He smashed up his drum kit and this cymbal shattered, bits of metal flew into the crowd. I picked up a piece and kept it for donkeys’ years.”

In 1968, Denise left school and departed Worthing for Holland, then Spain. She popped back for a year but found the town lifeless (“The only thing to do was at the bowling alley, a little disco called The Woods”), so she made a life for herself in London, then Sheffield, in various professions, mostly as an operating theatre technician and a sales rep.

Eventually, in 1996, she came back and settled in a flat on Worthing seafront, throwing herself into local magazine publishing.

“When I came back I went on Friends Reunited and looked in the phone book,” she says, “I found the mums and dads of my mates and organized a reunion. It was in the scruffy back room of the Jack Horner pub [now The Cornerhouse]. Janice Clements came but she was in a wheelchair. She had MS. I went to see her in a nursing home a few years later. She couldn’t speak. They invited me to a soul and Tamla event in that nursing home, playing Otis Redding, Carla Thomas, all our stuff. It was lovely. Janice smiled at me. She couldn’t speak but she said one word, “Sorry.” I said, “It doesn’t matter because you’re the one that gave me music.” n

Ready for a Magic Carpet Ride?

It’s that time of year again… oh yes it is! Everybody’s favourite family festive tradition comes bursting on to the stage as Aladdin promises to be the most magical pantomime in the land.

YOU CAN EXPECT AMAZING SINGING by Lee Latchford-Evans from pop super group STEPS in our title role, as well as an enchanting performance by CBeebies’ presenter Rebecca Keatley as Princess Jasmine. The jokes will come thick and fast from award-nominated comedian Vikki Stone, who plays the evil Abanazar, as well as comedian and family entertainer Mark Jones who plays Wishee Washee. Completing the line-up is our beloved dame Widow Twankey of course, played by the brilliant Brighton cabaret artiste Dave Lynn.

But that’s not all. As we searched for the most recognisable, distinctive and almighty voice in the land to record the Voice of the Genie, who is being played as an incredible 12 foot puppet, we could think of nobody better than the legendary Brian Blessed; his booming hilarity will be heard across the entire county I’m sure!

There are so many reasons to love panto, and for me one of those is the fantastic community element and how it brings people together.

We work alongside many local groups such as Northbrook MET College, who are creating a spectacular giant golden lamp which you’ll be able see in the Pavilion Café Bar. We’re delighted to be working with Chestnut Tree House again this year to help raise awareness and funds for their amazing cause. We’re also thrilled to have local boys and girls star in the show this year as we held auditions for the roles of the junior police force and the dancers.

THE MISSION - GIGS FOR KIDS

Here & Now meets Shoreham Allstars’ Dave O’Connell It’s 10 years since bass player, guitarist, songwriter and tutor Dave O’Connell started Shoreham Allstars. It’s quite likely if you’re a resident of this part of Sussex, that you’ve come across some of this collective of young musicians and bands from as young as 6 up to 18.

Building Our Music Community with Young People Allstars is a local gem - how do we keep it growing?

“Come and support us. Come to gigs! I’d like more young adult musicians come and get involved in the mentoring. It’s so satisfying to see how making music actually changes kids’ lives, and I want to be able to pass this amazing thing on to the next generation.

“And videographers! Come and create videos of the amazing music our kids make! Bring your phone if you don’t have a flash video camera, and learn to edit online!”

Building Music Careers, but Building Community Too

In ten years, some young musicians have grown up through Allstars, gone on to College (often our own Northbrook MET) and become full time musicians: Drummer Gabi King began as an Allstar in S’koolFest favourite Demelza’s Tea Party, but last year played Coachella and Lollapalooza with Declan Mckenna.

“Playing music in groups also gives kids positive musical memories. We contribute to experiences that make life more liveable for young people. It may have been a hard week at school, but at the weekend you’ve got a gig in a pub, you’re 10, and you even get a free glass of fizzy pop!”

Anniversary Celebrations

ALLSTARS STARTED IN 2008, when Dave, who had some regular guitar students, was approached by Shoreham’s Beach Dreams Festival to put on a fundraiser to help finance the festival, so he booked the Ropetackle Centre. “We hoped to sell a few tickets, but

when half of Shoreham turned up on the night, I thought there’s something in this.”

Young People? Enjoying themselves?

To parents of aspiring rockstars still on their first set of teeth, an age range of 6 to 18 sounds like it might be challenging for the smaller ones, but Dave immediately points out their latest addition, “a drummer called Mason, who is just 6, and is an absolute powerhouse”.

What about persuading real music venues, which are usually pubs, to take on young bands?

“What we found out, was that if you went to a venue and told the manager, ‘I have a band of 8 year olds called Chocolate Guftychumps, who would play a song they wrote called ‘Cats From The Future’, you might have a job to get a gig, but if you went in with a promise of 10 bands, plus their mums, dads and friends, the landlord would say ‘Yes, please!’ and by the way, that really is one of our bands, and also the title of one of their own songs!”

Fast forward to the present and the ten year celebrations culminate in a packed weekend of gigs: Shoreham Academy’s Main Hall on 6pm-9pm Friday 14 December, The Duke of Wellington, Shoreham Saturday 15th, 3pm-6pm, culminating in a Sunday 16th, 3pm-6pm gig at the Brunswick in Hove. “There are now 30 bands in AllStars”, says Dave, “and there’ll be 10 bands on average each gig.”

Mixing It Up, Making Something New

“We want our Allstars to write their own songs, it’s really important they realise that what they create now actually has value. Songs they write this year- aged only 12 will still exist and have worth in 20 years time; they will own and maybe still even be playing them!

What else can you do that retains or even grows in value and stays uniquely yours?”

To show how this works, Allstars has the Original AllStars Archive up on Soundcloud. com which contains every song written since 2009, including Cody from High Tyde’s first ever song. Dave says “It still sounds great.” n

5th Year!

This year we are pleased to have the support of the Worthing Town Centre Initiative who are sponsoring the cost of our firework display. This is a free and safe family event – come along and join in the fun!

We will shortly be approaching one of our main events, which is the Christmas street runs and Santa’s grotto in the town during December. A large part of our funds are raised during this time and enables us to help some families have a better Christmas.

Our shop is also a very large part of our fund raising. IT’S A LINE STRAIGHT OUT of the Ubiquitous Hack Playbook, under the chapter heading ‘Why Bognor doesn’t deserve Regis’, just after the dark monologue labelled ‘Arundel folklore: myths, legends and weird happenings after dark’ with the sub heading ‘But it still beats Bognor’.

Alas, it was not me, I’m even less witty in real life than in print. The accolade goes to a gentlemen across the aisle on the train talking to his female companion, chuckling over the Metro preview. “Then they’re off to Chi, that’s more understandable,” he pondered, knowing it’s unwise to condemn Chichester out loud in these fragile times.

In hindsight posh Chi was a shoo-in for a maiden royal visit; there’d have been tantrums in the tea rooms had they missed out on their birth right. We humble folk have to settle for Giles Brandreth and Michael Portillo, which just seems wrong/inhuman.

“They’d have been better off being named after the Lake District,” sniggers my muse, missing the point so widely that I began to seriously consider commissioning him to cover the Worthing Bypass during high days and holidays, which I am yet to take for fear I’ll be replaced forever by that permanent standby advert for garden sheds.

“That just doesn’t work, logically or humorously,” I respond, fortunately not out loud on this occasion. For a start, northerners would call them the Duke and Duchess of t’ Lake District and if you start naming the gentry after National Trust sites and the like you’ll end up with Princess Beatrice as Duchess of the South Downs Way, which sounds like a half-baked country music song. It’s also the name of a new drag queen venue in Amberley.

Any ways up, in spite of choosing to bypass the best of Sussex I’m ambivalent towards our absent landlords, as I am to the rest of the crew. I just can’t muster the enthusiasm or energy either way,

unless I’m confronted by one in which case I’m unfailingly polite just in case bad manners is still a treasonable offence, which it should be.

That happened when I bumped into the Queen Mother after a press junket for a forgetful new tech launch that didn’t turn out to be the next Google, or anything else for that matter, at the Savoy Hotel. I had slipped off early and headed towards the back exit on the Embankment, only to be confronted by the classic Rolls Royce and tourists frantically waving tiny plastic Union Flags, which could only mean one thing: inconvenience. I headed back inside at a trot knowing full well I’d be wrestled to the ground if the royal protection officers caught a whiff of my breath.

Making my way through the luminous corridors of the Savoy I was struck by how many serving staff were lined up, heads bowed, until I ran smack bang into an instantly recognisable little old lady, which could only me one thing: more inconvenience. With a grace and eloquence that would have befitted Anton du Bece, I pivoted left, leaned back against the wall as if alcohol gaveth me poise rather than taketh away, and hung my head as low as a puppy that had just pooped on the bed, letting her Majesty totter past so that, like Chi in winter, I didn’t exist. Job done.

I imagine Bognor felt similarly after their royal visit; Chichester would have patted down the hem of her skirt, muttered a few words of self-adulation and moved on to the next celebrity visitor; Brighton would have been too half-cut to notice; Worthing, one feels, is best left alone. We have something that, unlike our respective bypasses, cannot be given or taken away. I refer, of course, to gravitas: the royals could learn a thing or two from us you know.
