This year’s grant was used to purchase items for our 4th, 5th and 6th grade science classrooms.

Items purchased included balance scales, thermometers, solar ovens, heat lamps, test tubes, Lego Education WeDo 2.0 Kits were determined through collaboration among Mrs. Stephanie Smith, Mrs.

Lyndi Kerr and Mrs. Tammie Lee. “We are very thankful to the Arkansas STEM Coalition and Finley STEM Center for providing us with this opportunity to enhance our students’ STEM experiences through the science classroom,” said Tiffany Glover, Hazen Elementary Principal.

HHS Senior Brianna Thompson was elected governor of the 75th annual Girls State convention held at Harding University in Searcy.

Thompson represented the Nationalist Party and was elected by her fellow delegates.

Girls State is a civics based, week long program in which delegates are assigned a mock political party, city, and county. Through out the week delegates nominate members of their parties for political positions.

The public has the option to purchase education license plates for an additional fee of which $25 per license plate is sent to the Arkansas Committed to Education Foundation (ACTE).

ACTE established a program to distribute the funds by partnering with the Arkansas STEM Coalition. The Arkansas STEM Coalition developed a continuing procedure to distribute the

funds through twelve STEM Centers located on twelve university and college campuses in the state.

Each STEM Center identifies two elementary schools in need of science equipment or mathematics manipulatives and related professional development for teachers in grades 3 through 6. Each school receives approximately $3,000 worth of science and mathematics equipment based on the science and mathematics content needs of the students and the teachers.

The equipment is used by students as a science or mathematics laboratory with hands-on learning

situations and problems to develop understanding of mathematics concepts and science concepts in life, earth and physical science.

The science specialists employed by the university STEM Centers provide the professional development necessary to increase the teachers’ content and instructional skills in science.

The professional development is provided at the school site and in the student classrooms with the teacher teaming with the content specialists to learn how to use the equipment and how to deliver inquiry-based lessons.

The combined estimated damage to the tractors and damaged mailboxes was in excess of $200,000.00 The Prairie County Sheriff’s Department has arrested one adult suspect in connection to the 25 damaged mail boxes and the tractor theft case, a second juvenile suspect was referred to the Prairie County Court system to be dealt with.

The Prairie County Sheriff’s Department is currently working several criminal cases involving recent wire thefts accruing in the southern part of Prairie County; suspects have been identified and are being investigated as fast as information becomes available.

The Prairie County Sheriff’s Department asks that all citizens immediately report all suspicious activity / vehicles / or persons.

Obituaries Don Rogers Don Ellis Rogers, 81, of Des Arc died Sunday, May 28, 2017 at Unity Health White County Medical Center in Searcy, Arkansas. Mr. Don was born January 18, 1936 in El Paso, Texas to George and Louise (Rains) Rogers. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Roy Rogers. LITTLE ROCK, AR -The University of Arkansas at Little Rock has announced its spring 2017 semester dean's list, recognizing students' superior academic performance.

To be included, students must have at least nine credit hours with a grade of A, B, C, or "credit" and at least a 3.5 GPA. Students must not have D, F, I, or "no credit" grades on the semester grade report to be eligi-

Hazen library to host reptile program The Delta Rivers Nature Center will be visiting the Hazen Public Library on Monday, June 12, at 3:30 pm. The library invites patrons to join them for a fun and interesting program about reptiles in Arkansas.

The Delta Rivers Nature Center in Pine Bluff is the first of four free nature centers built by the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission

with revenue from Amendment 75, a oneeighth of one percent statewide sales tax passed in 1996. The center specializes in the rivers of the Delta and the plants and animals associated with them.

People of all ages are welcome to attend the program at the library., but attendees are asked to pre-register by calling 870-255-3576.

HHS holds Purple and White Scrimmage Game

Eden Corley of Hazen graduates from Harding University Eden Corley, an alumna of Hazen High School, is one of more than 900 graduates who received a diploma at Harding University's commencement exercises May 6, 2017.

Corley received a Bachelor of Arts in electronic media production.

University President Bruce D. McLarty presented the diplomas to the graduates Corley now works, putting her degree to use, as an Online Media Reporter for the Log Cabin Democrat in Conway, AR

Bonamassa blues-rrock tour to benefit AETN In this all-acoustic concert, world-renowned, platinum-selling, Bluesrock singer-songwriter and guitarist Joe Bonamassa is joined by an all-star ensemble of world-class musicians. He is finally making good on his childhood dream of playing one of the most hallowed stages in the world.

This stripped down, allacoustic show will allow his fans a glimpse into his soul and presents a thrilling and musically dangerous spectacle akin to walking a tightrope without a net.

Guests include the acclaimed Chinese cellist and erhuist Tina Guo, whose repertoire stretches from classical to heavy metal, and Hossam Ramzy, the Egyptian percussionist and composer who has performed on dozens of film soundtracks and records and was the percussionist on Jimmy Page and Robert Plant's No Quarter: Unledded Tour. HHS art department receives $4,480 CenturyLink grant

State Capitol Week in Review From Senator Jonathan Dismang Two important deadlines are approaching for students seeking financial aid to attend a state-supported college or university.

June 15 is the deadline to apply for the popular Academic Challenge Scholarships, which are funded by the lottery and which help about 30,000 students every year. July 1 is the deadline for applying for an ARFuture grant, which will cover tuition and fees for students who major in science, technology, engineering and math.

The application process is simple. Search for the web page of the state Department of Higher Education by typing in “scholarships.adhe.edu” and clicking on the YOUniversal Scholarship Application.

To qualify for a lottery scholarship a student must score at least 19 on the ACT college entrance exam. Once in college they have to maintain a 2.5 grade point average.

With the passage of Act 597 of 2017 the legislature changed the law so that, for the first time, graduate students can receive the scholarships.

The scholarship awards are structured to provide a strong incentive for students to complete their freshman year and stay on course towards earning a degree. The lottery

HHS Art teacher Terri Taylor-Rollins receives the oversized $4,480 check from Centurylink representative, Robby Theodore. The HHS photography students will be doing a photodocumentary project centered around “a year in the life of the community of Hazen.” The grant will be used to purchase cameras and other needed materials for the project.

ATU spring Dean’s List told Arkansas Tech University has announced its Dean’s List for undergraduate students on the Russellville campus for the spring 2017 semester.

A student must achieve a 3.5 grade point average or higher and complete at least 12 hours of collegelevel coursework to be named to the Dean’s List.

A total of 1,815 Arkansas Tech students achieved that distinction during spring 2017, an 8.7 percent increase over spring 2016. Included in the spring 2017 Dean’s List are 707 students who achieved a 4.0 grade point average, which is an 8.8 percent increase over spring 2016. Local members of the spring 2017

Students at a two-year college receive $3,000 their second year.

Students enrolled in a four-year university who maintain the 2.5 GPA will receive $4,000 in both their sophomore and junior years. As seniors they receive $5,000.

In the regular session earlier this year the governor proposed and the legislature approved Act 316 to create the ARFutures grant program.

The grants will pay for two years of tuition and fees for students pursuing certificates or associates’ degrees in fields of high demand, such as computer science, technology and welding.

Students who receive a grant must participate in a mentor program and a community service program. After their graduation they must work fulltime in Arkansas for at least three years. If they leave the state, the grant is converted into a loan and must be repaid.

Higher education officials estimate that about 7,000 students will receive ARFuture grants.

The grants are not for a specific amount because each institution has different fees and tuition charges. Higher education officials estimate that the average cost is about

Volkswagen was sued for allegedly violating clean air laws by the state of California and the federal Environmental Protection Agency. The agencies alleged that Volkswagen tampered with emission control devices in order to skirt clean air laws.

The alleged tampering occurred on about 500,000 cars and 80,000 diesel powered vehicles sold between 2009 and 2016.

Nationwide, Volkswagen will pay the states about $2.9 billion. States will use the money to fund air pollution reduction efforts.

Specifically, the money will go toward improving air quality by reducing the amounts of nitrogen oxides (NOx), ozone, and fine particles in the atmosphere.

Burroughs and Hubbard attend Arkansas Governor’s reception On Saturday, May 13, the Governor Asa Hutchinson and First Lady Susan Hutchinson hosted a reception at the Governor’s Mansion for the 2017 honor students from across the state.

Each school is allowed only two invitations to attend the annual recep-

tion for the graduating Valedictorians and Salutatorians.

Hazen had one Valedictorian and one Salutatorian this year.

Valedictorian Allie Burroughs, attended the reception alongside her parents.

Arkansas rice update Crop Progress “Forget the curveball, Ricky.

Give’em the heater!” We’ve seen every curve Mother Nature can throw this spring. Now it seems ready to deal us a pitch we can hit in the coming weeks with consistently warm temperatures here to stay for a little while. We also have a possible break in the rain for a little while after this weekend.

Everyone seems to be in catch-up mode or struggling not to fall further behind, particularly with cleanup herbicide shots and preflood N applications. This next week may be our magic window to get this rice crop back on track, so let’s not miss a golden opportunity. Get your game plan together now and let’s get it done next week.

Most rice planting is now complete. There are still some replant decisions to be made after failed acres, but some of those are still submerged or too wet. They will likely not be in condition to replant before June 10 at which time they’ll be swapped over to beans if they ever get planted to anything. I’m as interested as everyone else to see the June acreage report, but I still feel we’ll be in the 1.0-1.1 million acre range.

Rice Water Weevil Alert Rice water weevil (RWW) numbers look pretty bad this year.

Calls are coming in across the whole rice region. The mild winter was apparently good for RWW. Need to be scouting for adult feeding (scarring) 35 days after flood.

In fields going to flood that have been planted over 45 days ago we’re beginning to see the insecticide seed treatments break. Significant

rainfall combined with length of time in the field has them playing out. As a result we’re seeing increasing amounts of RWW scarring as rice is flooded.

If you have rice that did not receive a seed treatment, or has been in the ground for a long time before going to flood, you need to be scouting for scarring. If you have significant scarring and activity from RWW adults then to control the larvae you will need to make a foliar insecticide application 7-10 days after flooding, such as Karate or Belay. If it has been more than 10 days since the flood was established then do not bother spraying! You will not get control!

If severe infestations are occurring and you miss the insecticide application window, the only answer is to dry the soil to cracking to kill the larvae.

The “sweet spot” for this is to not have to reflood until it has been at least 3 weeks since the flood was established. The reason for this is it typically takes 3 weeks for plants to take up preflood nitrogen – losing a flood and having to reflood inside that 3 week window will result in nitrogen loss.

2016 Rice PLC Update As of May 10, USDA’s Farm Service Agency (FSA) is projecting a 2016 marketing year average price for long-grain of $9.70/cwt. or $4.37/bu. A projected PLC Payment Rate can be determined by subtracting the $4.37/bu. marketing year average price from the PLC Reference Price of $6.30/bu. This would result in a projected PLC Payment Rate of $1.93 per bushel (not accounting for sequestration).

The final marketing year

price for 2016 long-grain is expected to be announced in October.

Rough Rice Market Chicago rice futures closed higher Friday (6/2) for the fifth straight week. The September ’17 and November ’17 rice futures contracts settled at $11.39 and $11.60/cwt., respectively.

The September ’17 contract is about 46 cents from reaching its’ life of contract high of $11.85/cwt.

Traders have been focused on lost acreage, delayed planting, crop condition ratings that are below last year and most recently new export business with Iraq. That is likely now priced into the market.

The Acreage report due out June 30 could be the make-orbreak news item for rice this month. New crop basis levels in recent weeks are generally 50 cents/cwt under futures at mills and 75 to 80 cents/cwt under at dryers.

It will be interesting to see if basis levels can hold firm in the face of rising futures.

Long-Grain Exports Weekly Export Sales for the week of May 25 were released this morning.

There was nothing of any great significance to note regarding long-grain.

Most of the rough rice sales last week were to Mexico, which accounts for 44% of rough rice sales year-to-date.

Overall, long-grain rough rice sales are running 5% ahead of last year’s pace.

No new crop (2017) rough rice sales have been listed thus far.

Long-grain milled rice sales are 9% behind last year. Haiti accounts for 51% of long-grain milled sales to date. The majority of milled sales last week were also to Haiti.

The Hazen School District Pre-K class held a graduation ceremony in honor of their promotion to kindergarten. The ceremony was held in the Hornets’ Nest Gymnasium on May 3.
