Brayden Elisabeth Williams Valedictorian Brayden Elizabeth Williams Brayden is the daughter of Davy and Angie Williams, and she is the Valedictorian of the Hazen High School class of 2018. She is the President of the Senior Class and Treasurer of the Student Council. She is also the Captain of the senior high cheerleading squad and is a varsity member of the HHS softball and basketball teams. Brayden was named Hazen High School’s Wendy’s High School Heisman winner.

She has received the Chancellor’s Scholarship from ASU Beebe, the Arkansas Academic Challenge Scholarship, the Arkansas State Police Association Scholarship, and the Arkansas School Board Association Scholarship.

Brayden is a member of the Hazen First Baptist Church and the Calvary Baptist youth group. She will be attending ASU Beebe in the fall, and intends to major in Liberal Arts and Science.

Jenna Ronquest Jenna is the daughter of Jim and Rosi Ronquest, and she is the Salutatorian of the Hazen High School Class of 2018. She is the President of the Student Council and Editor of the HHS Yearbook. Jenna is the Treasurer of the Senior Class, a member of the Senior High Beta Club, the National Honor Society, and was this year’s homecoming queen. Jenna Attends Sts. Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak. She plans to attend the University of Arkansas in Fayetteville, majoring in Interdisciplinary Studies.

After obtaining her Bachelor’s Degree, she intends to attend law school.

Pilots Association. He is a licensed airplane pilot. He has traveled to England, France, Italy, Scotland, and Ireland with EF tours, and he was a part of a mission group that traveled to the Appalachian Mountains to build a church building and wheelchair ramp.

Logan plans to continue his education at Henderson State University in the fall, where he will enter the professional pilot program. Upon graduation, Logan will work in the aviation industry.

Cayden Dale Glover Cayden is the son of Jackie Dale and Tiffany Glover. He plays varsity football, in which he was chosen for All-Conference, and varsity baseball. He is a member of the Senior High Beta Club and the National Honor Society.

Cayden attends the Biscoe Church of Christ, serves as a umpire for the Hazen Youth Baseball Association, and volunteers daily to read and work with kindergarteners at Hazen Elementary School. Cayden plans to attend college at Henderson State University to earn a master’s degree in Psychology. He wants to work as an outpatient counselor while earning his doctorate to become a psychiatrist.

Elizabeth Grace Foot Elizabeth is the daughter of Benji and Shelia Foot. She is a member of the Lady Hornets basketball and softball teams and the varsity cheer squad. Elizabeth is a member of the FCA and the Student Council, and she is an office worker.

Elizabeth is a member of the Calvary Baptist Church. She plans to attend ASU Beebe where she intends to graduate with an Associate in Science and Liberal Arts.

Hannah Briann Walker Hannah is the daughter of Teddy and Rachel Walker. She is a member of the National Honor Society, the Senior High Beta Club, and the senior high cheerleading squad.

Hannah is a member of the Oasis Church of Hazen. She plans to attend the University of Arkansas at Phillips County Community College in Stuttgart to pursue a career in nursing.

Whitney Erin Strohl Whitney is the daughter of David and Cindy Strohl. She is a member of the Senior High Beta Club and the National Honor Society. She has been a Hazen Hornet cheerleader for for six years and was co-captain of the squad her senior year. Whitney is a member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Hazen. She will be attending ASUBeebe this fall and plans to major in HealthScience so that she may become a dental hygienist.

Logan James Dulany Logan is the son of Dr. Jeff and Cherie Dulany.

He is a member of the Hazen Hornet football team, weightlifting team, and track team. He was selected All-Conference in football. Logan was chosen to be a delegate to Arkansas Boys’ State his junior year. He was awarded the HHS Outstanding Sophomore and Junior Awards, and he was selected as the recipient of the Hornet Award for Character by the faculty in 2017. He is a member of the Senior

May brucellosis vaccination day The County Brucellosis (Bangs) vaccination program will be held Wednesday, May 16, 2017.

Arkansas law requires that all heifer calves between 4 and 12 months of age be vaccinated against Brucellosis.

Representatives from the Livestock and Poultry Commission and the Prairie County Cooperative Extension Service will offer an onfarm vaccination program at no cost to all Prairie County beef and dairy producers.

The Livestock and Poultry Commission has stated that each farm where cattle are to be vaccinated must have a chute or squeeze chute with a head gate where cattle can be subdued.

Even with good facilities, the chances of someone getting hurt are possible.

If the proper facilities are not available or safe, the vaccinator has the right to refuse to vaccinate your calves. Calves will not be vaccinated unless the owner or someone representing him is present.

LEBANON, IL (04/30/2018)-Kirby Smith, a senior sociologycriminal justice major at McKendree University, is a new member of Chapter 292 of Phi Kappa Phi national honor society.

Smith, of Des Arc, was inducted during the chapter's initiation ceremony on April 26. The event was held during the university's fifth annual Academic Excellence Celebration to recognize outstanding student achievement. Founded in 1897, Phi Kappa Phi is the nation's oldest, largest and most selective all-dis-

cipline honor society, with only the top percentage of students eligible for membership.

William Ellis Edge William Ellis Edge, 93, of Hazen passed away May 2, 2018. He retired from Arkansas Power & Light after 37 years. He was a resident of Chambers Nursing Home and a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Hazen.

He was preceded in death by his wife of 68 years, Frances Edge; his parents, Cliff and Jesse Edge; one brother, one sister, one son-in-law and one step-grandson.

Bud is survived by two daughters, Tammy Edge of Hazen and Wanda Tiner of Stuttgart; one son, Ricky Edge and wife, Marilyn of Hazen; six grandchildren, Ray Tiner, Tonya Fletcher, Taneesa Richardson, Eric Abrams, Brandy Hays, and Crystal Smith; 10 greatgrandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.

Visitation was from 10:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. , Friday, May 4, 2018 at Calvary Baptist Church prior to the service at 11:00 A.M. Burial was in the Hazen Cemetery.

The family would like to express their grateful appreciation to Chambers Nursing Home for the wonderful care given their Dad.

Bernie Garold Pfleger Bernie Garold Pfleger, 69, died Thursday. He was a retired truck driver. Bernie was an avid storyteller with an outgoing personality who never met a stranger. If you haven't driven or walked through the Tom Roe Memorial Riverfront Park on the bank of White River in Des Arc recently, please do. You might consider bringing a snack along with your family members and have a picnic or just sit and watch the river flow by.

It's good place to relax and escape from worrisome things or people!

This week in May, due to the work of many, the park seems particularly beautiful. The mowing crew and the grounds keeper do an excellent job and the labors and talents of Rodney Adams who cleared unwanted vegetation from the planters near the gazebos and re-mulched all those areas has transformed the appearance of the park.

Mr. Joe Bob Robinson and his tree service operation crew came to the park with a

bucket truck, chain saws and a loader truck and complimented all that work by removing quite a pile of unwanted limbs.

Their work was a treat to observe.

With park benches, water hydrants, flowerbed liners directly under the removed limbs, they worked with precision and did zero damage!

Maybe that is where the term tree surgeon came from?

The view of the river from any location in the park is much improved.

Hats off to workers who make the park shine, whether they are paid or volunteers, their efforts provide a safe place for children to play and families to relax and enjoy some peace and tranquility as the busy world races past us just out of sight.

Local citizens through their taxes and their city officials who support locations such as

the park deserve a pat on the back too. Some say that quality of life is worth more than gold.

However, if one can't have the gold, having some golden moments

DHS announces support processes for work requirements reporting As the Arkansas Department of Human Services (DHS) prepares to implement the Arkansas Works work and community engagement requirement June 1, the agency is rolling out new efforts to help beneficiaries get ready for the changes.

“It’s important to us that people have a clear understanding of what is expected of them once the work requirement is live and they have the support they need,” said DHS Director Cindy Gillespie. “We especially wanted to take steps to address potential barriers to reporting work activities, such as a lack of reading skills and a lack of home access to the Internet.”

To address these issues, DHS has created a process that allows beneficiaries to designate a trusted individual to help them report their work activities or exemptions – just as they would today with family, insurance carriers, and hospital financial staff when applying for Arkansas Works. The designated person will be called a registered reporter and will be required to complete a short online training that explains what information is required,

how often work activities/exemptions need to be reported, and the importance of keeping people’s information confidential.

Registered reporters will not have access to a beneficiary’s Social Security number.

Both Arkansas BlueCross BlueShield and Arkansas Health and Wellness, two of the insurance carriers that cover Arkansas Works recipients, have voluntarily agreed to have registered reporters available to assist beneficiaries. For in-person assistance from DHS, beneficiaries can go to their local county offices.

Through a contract with the Arkansas Foundation for Medical Care (AFMC), people also can get overthe-phone help creating their online accounts at www.access.arkansas.gov and linking their accounts to their Arkansas Works coverage. It is important that beneficiaries create and link their online account so they can report their work activities. This week, at the request of DHS, AFMC began proactively calling beneficiaries who will be subject to the work requirement June 1. The caller’s goal is to make sure beneficiaries understand what they need to do to

comply with the new work requirement and to ensure that they have a current email and mailing address on file. The caller may ask beneficiaries to confirm their email addresses, but AFMC will never ask for protected information such as Social Security or Medicaid numbers or any passwords.

In 2018, Arkansas Works beneficiaries who are 30-49 years old will be subject to the work and community engagement requirement unless they are pregnant, disabled, already working 80 hours a month, or have some other exemption. DHS will begin rolling beneficiaries into the requirement several thousand people at a time between June and September. Beneficiaries who will be subject to the work requirement June 1 will get a letter next week notifying them of their status.

This week DHS also mailed letters to all Arkansas Works beneficiaries between the ages of 30 and 49, regardless of their work requirement status, that included a list of at least two sites in every county that have free Internet-accessible computers for use. All DHS county offices have

computers available.

Arkansas Works beneficiaries with BlueCross BlueShield coverage who need assistance from a registered reporter can call (800) 800-4298.

Beneficiaries with Ambetter (Arkansas Health and Wellness) coverage who need assistance from a registered reporter can call (877) 617-0390.

To become a registered reporter, you will need to review training on reporting work activities and exemptions and linking accounts. You’ll also need access to the authorization, acknowledgement, and revocation forms.

Prairie County EHC hosts AARP driver safety course in Hazen May 24 Brush Up on Your Driving Skills and Save Money!

AARP Driver Safety Course in Hazen The Prairie County Extension Homemakers Council will sponsor an AARP Driver Safety Course on Thursday, May 24 at the Community Center in Hazen from 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM. Why should you take an AARP Driver Safety Course? Because driving has changed since you first got your license, and doing so could save you money.

Cars have changed. So have traffic rules, driving conditions, and the roads you travel

every day. Many drivers have never looked back since they got their first driver's license, but even the most experienced drivers can benefit from brushing up on their driving skills. By taking a driver safety course you'll learn the current rules of the road, defensive driving techniques, and how to operate your vehicle more safely in today's increasingly challenging driving environment. You'll learn how you can manage and accommodate common age-related changes in vision, hearing and reaction time.

The course will be

taught by AARP Volunteer Instructor Deborah Landers. The cost is $15 for members and $20 for non-members.

The course is open to people of all ages. Best of all, you may be eligible to receive an insurance discount upon completing the course, so consult your agent for details.

You might also be eligible to receive a discount on roadside assistance plans.

AARP membership is not required to take the course and there are no tests to pass.

After attending the course you'll receive a certificate of completion that can be presented to your insur-

ance agent.

PC officials proclaim May historic preservation month LITTLE ROCK–Prairie County Judge Mike Skarda and Hazen Mayor David Duch are among 166 officials in 74 counties who have declared May as Historic Preservation Month and Arkansas Heritage Month.

“As we enjoy these month-long celebrations of our Arkansas heritage, we hope all of the people of Arkansas will take time to reflect on the importance of their local historic sites, especially those listed on the National Register of Historic Places,” Department of Arkansas Heritage Director Stacy Hurst said. by Darlene Finch, Council Secretary The Prairie County Spring Council meeting was held on Thursday April 26, 2018 at the Prairie County Fairgrounds with Mitzi Osborne, Council President presiding. The theme of the meeting was "Grace Changes Everything."

Hostess clubs Prairie Piecemakers and Couponistas provided morning refreshments.

Idlewild Club members began registration at 9:30 am. The meeting started at 10:00 am. with a welcome by Lawana Shuck followed by a response from Council Secretary Darlene Finch. VicePresident Janice Bell led us in The Pledge of Allegiance.

Members recited the Extension Homemakers Creed and Council President Mitzi Osborne shared the thought of the day.

Members Amazing Grace to go along with the theme of the meeting.

Afterward Shea Wilson, CEA-FCS/4-H led an indoor scavenger hunt game.

The guest speaker was Britteny Schrick, Assistant Professor for Family Life, Extension.

She presented "Grace

under Pressure: Dealing with Difficult People." It was very interesting and gave our members some great ideas about conducting our meetings and dealing with trying situations.

Business included: reminding clubs to elect new officers during their May meeting and to collect dues, and complete secretary books and financial reports during May/June meetings.

Members also discussed the state AEHC meeting June 5-7 in Hot Springs.

Other reminders included dates for upcoming board meetings, programs, and projects.

PC Retired Teachers attend ARTA meeting

By Chris Weems Nine members of Prairie County Retired Teachers Association attended the ARTA Area VI meeting in Jacksonville, Monday, April 30. The Meeting at the Southern Oaks Country Club, was opened with welcome and introductions by a board member, Sharon Johnson.

Sharon introduced the Area representatives on the ARTS board, and Lisa Bamburg, Matt Hughes and Mary Alice Hughes of Insurance Advantage, Jacksonville.

Mary Alice spoke to the group about their insurance coverage and the advantage of having Long Term Care for Nursing Home or Home-bound retirees. She reminded the different Units to be sure to schedule a visit for her or Lisa in the Fall to see about changes that may be necessary.

Jeff Vaughan, LRAFB Health Promotion Manager and owner/operator of Expect Results Fitness, LLC, who talked about exercises and activities to improve fitness. He even showed some of the stretches in the warm-ups.

After the morning break, Unit presidents had a training session and the membership heard information on redistricting the areas and Travel information.

George Hopkins, Arkansas Teachers Retirement System, gave information about the system and the fact that the

retirement systems in the USA. He said, no one in the ATRS should be worried about their regular pension because of the stability of the investments.

A member asked if the “Tariff on steel and other metals would have an effect on the Big River Steel products?” He said a definite “No.”

Jeff Vaughn COLA is being paid regularly. He reported that the oldest member in the Retirement System, who is 113, continues to draw her monthly stipend. He stated that the ARTS is in the top one percent of the

Hazen School Board approves salary schedules The Hazen School Board approved the 2018-2019 certified, classified, and supplemental salary schedules at its regular meeting held on Monday, April 23, in the Hazen High School library.

Board President David Strohl and members Vicki Skarda, Davy Williams, Richie Ingle, Freddie Rogers, and Sandra Penn were present at the meeting, along with Superintendent Bill Crowder, High School Principal Clint Williams, and District Treasurer/Bookkeeper Sarah Snider.

The certified salary schedule for Hazen School District teachers begins at $31,800, the state minimum for teachers with a Bachelor’s Degree and no experience. The salary of a teacher with that same degree and twenty five or more years of experience is set at $43,050. Teachers with Masters Degrees begin at $36,450, and the salary for twenty five or more years experience is $48,950. The Des Arc certified salary schedule begins at the same level but ends at $50,550.

Teachers in the Carlisle School District begin at $32,500 but top out at the same level as the Hazen

teachers. Thirty seven elementary certified staff members and 17 high school certified staff members were rehired for the 2018-19 after an hour-long executive session to discuss personnel. Williams stepped out of the meeting before the vote that included the hiring of his wife, who is the elementary math specialist. The resignation of Melody Weaver, an elementary paraprofessional, was accepted.

The district will also pay one-third of the salary of a School Resource Officer (SRO) who will be assigned to the district during the school year.

The officer will be hired by and working for the Hazen Police Department.

The district portion will be $15,380.14 per year, and the other two-thirds of the salary will be paid for by the City of Hazen and Prairie County. Crowder told the board that the SRO will be at the school everyday, and that the amount the district will pay through purchased services includes retirement and other benefits and taxes. “I have been talking to the principals about the SRO’s duties,” Crowder said. No one has been chosen for the job as

yet, but Hazen Mayor David Duch says that the city has at least one applicant for the position.

In addition to passing this year’s ACSIP plan, the board also approved the superintendent’s recommendation to pay the Wilbur D. Mills Cooperative $6,349.00 for professional development and math training to district math teachers for the 2017-18 school year provided by Dr. Linda Griffin.

Dr. Griffin came twice in the summer and conducted some trainings at the coop and in Hazen, according to Crowder. Griffin has been helping the Hazen Elementary math teachers implement the Engage New York math program. Hazen High School, the only high school in the state of Arkansas to try to implement the program quit using the system after one year.

The board approved the purchase of 105 Lenovo 300E chromebooks with management licenses and 95 of the same type of chromebooks for the elementary school for a total of $58,488 out of the National School Lunch (NSLA) funds. They also approved the recommendation to purchase two Apple MacBook Pro computers for the high school for $5769.78 from NSLA funds.

Allegiant Security will be paid $8,971.69 to expand and update the district’s security camera network using federal funds.

Principal Williams reported that board member and Arkansas State Policeman Davy Williams will be the speaker at the annual Honors Banquet, and that graduation will be held on in the gymnasium on Sunday, May 20th, at 2:00 p.m.

My somber longing for summer

My favorite time of the year is summer and I don’t care what the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage says. Summer is what I live for especially here in Florida.

As soon as Fall arrives in full steam I am looking forward to summer with uncontrollable anticipation.

One thing that attracts me to summer has to do with the weather.

I don’t like cold because I’m growing too old now to shiver properly. When it is cold and I am supposed to be shivering, I don’t have the energy. I admit that I don’t have the energy I had a few years back. Let’s not talk about how many years back. Shivering now is really not part of my exercise program.

I think God created winter for someone like me to appreciate summer. I have had enough winter now so that I can appreciate summer for the rest of my life.

I wonder if heaven is going to be like summer?

Another thing I don’t like about being cold is having to wear sweaters and sometimes coats and hats and mittens. When it’s really cold outside by the

time I get dressed to go outside I’m either too tired to go outside or I can’t remember why I wanted to go outside in the first place.

It takes me “forever” to get dressed for cold weather.

Another thing about being cold is my brain doesn’t function 100%.

When it is cold, parts of my brain have to be used to deal with the cold weather on my body. Don’t ask me how that works, I just know it works.

I have a brain and I take care of my brain and feed my brain so I can use my brain for my things and not for things like the weather!

What I like about summer is that it is hot. I love hot, contrary to the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage. Don’t let this get around, but she doesn’t like when the weather is hot outside. She complains and complains about how hot it is outside.

I remember one time she was complaining about how hot it was outside and I was sitting there smiling.

I try not to let a smile break out on my face when she is complaining about

something. This time, the smile broke out on my face and I could not control it.

“What are you,” she said rather snarly, “smiling about now?”

It’s situations like this that usually get me into trouble. If I answer, I’m in trouble. If I don’t answer, I’m in trouble. What’s a husband to do?

But right now it’s not summer and so I’m not in my “happy faze.” I have a rule, when the temperature drops below my age it's too cold for me.

As I was sitting there frowning and muttering to myself, my wife said, “So, what are you complaining about?”

Unfortunately, I was not thinking, which is the usual course for me, and I answered her question.

“I’m just not happy,” I said with a grimace all over my face, “about all this cold weather. I can’t wait for summer to get here.”

Of course, that did not set very well with her. She’s from the state of New York and winter is her best time of the year. She likes snow, which of course doesn’t happen here in Florida, for which I’m thankful. She

loves the cold weather and revels in it and there are times, don’t let this get around, that she rubs it in my face.

As of late the weather here has been to her liking. And she’s been happy and going around the house singing while I’m sitting in my chair grimacing. If ever anybody can grimace, it is me. I've had a lot of practice at it.

According to her, fall and winter are the greatest months of the year. And she’s not short in telling me this to my face.

So, I’m sitting here trying not to shiver too much and drinking a very hot cup of coffee. My wife makes many things well, but nothing quite as well as hot coffee. What she doesn’t realize is, as I’m drinking my hot coffee, I’m thinking of summer.

I’m not sure who was the first one who said it, but I think I agree with it, “Opposites attract.” And nothing could be more opposite than my winter wife and her summer husband.

As I thought about this it came to me that the reason I appreciate summer so much is because of the

winter. It is during the wintertime that I have this longing for the summer weather. If it wasn’t for winter, I’m not sure I would appreciate summer as much as I do.

I always have a religious twist to things that are happening in my life. As I thought of this it came to my mind that the trials in my life cause me to appreciate the amazing grace of God. It wasn’t for the hard times I wouldn’t appreciate the good times.

I like what James says about this. “Blessed is the man that endureth temptation: for when he is tried, he shall receive the crown of life, which the Lord hath promised to them that love him” (James 1:12).

I must honestly confess I don’t know how good I have it until I don’t have it so good.

Prairie County Democrats host 2018 candidates

On Thursday, May 3, 2018 the banquet room at Murry's Restaurant was filled with smiling faces, good food, positive attitudes and no empty chairs! The event was called by the Prairie County Democratic Committee to honor our county officials and to recognize that five of the six-member delegation will begin a new fouryear term in January 2019.

We urge all voters to consider these candidates and it's very obvious that none are running against anyone, they are running for a position that will allow them to serve the people of Prairie County. None have axes to grind or partisan agendas to promote.

More than one has stated that here in Prairie County, we must work together and not allow the rancor and division we see daily in our nation’s capitol to creep into our county. Each one of these candidates has pledged to never allow partisanship to enter their office operations and to treat everyone equally.

After comments from the county officials and candidates, Chintan Desai of Helena, Arkansas, candidate for First District Representative of Arkansas, addressed the group and then answered questions and visited one on one with all present.

He is a most impressive young man and an educator having taught at the famous KIPP School in Helena.

He certainly has a grasp of what the issues are and the lack of attention to those issues coming from Washington D.C. Mr. Desai, like the county candidates is running for something, not against anyone.

It's no secret that our national focus in not on rural areas. The lack of infrastructure investment is taking its toll and this is an area that Chintan thinks we could be doing much better in.

The comments by officials and candidates must have been appetizing because when the catfish/chicken and trimmings hit the table all energy was focused on the food. As the dinner meal evaporated and the fellowship picked up speed, our hostess brought trays of Stan & Becky's famous hot bread pudding. Our hats are off to the crew at Murry's for the fine meal, great service and delightful atmosphere.

As a Committee we are grateful that our line up of officials and candidates are the kind of people they are. We ask our fellow citizens of Prairie County to join us in wishing those without opposition the very best and for those whose names are on ballots, we ask that you give each one careful consideration and by all means don't forget to vote! Early voting begins Monday May 7, 2018 and the Primary Election will on May 22nd. Early voting is conducted at both

the Des Arc and DeValls Bluff Courthouses.

At this time, we are under a mandatory Voter I.D. law so please bring a Photo I.D. with you to the polls and if you vote an Absentee Ballot you must include a copy of your photo I.D. when you mail or hand your ballot in.

PC sheriff’s report As of Wednesday, May 1, the Prairie County Sheriff's Department currently has 35 individuals in custody on both felony and misdemeanor charges at the Prairie County Detention Center, located in Des Arc. Recent additions include -- 14 males on felony, one male on misdemeanor, one female on misdemeanor and one female on felony -- charges.

Recent arrests include: Ronnie Dayberry was arrested on possession of methamphetamine or cocaine, which is a a felony offense along with possession of drug paraphernalia; Mark Alexander was taken into custody on a misdemeanor failure to appear charge; Charles Rhodes was arrested for driving while intoxicated, no driver's license and drinking on highway, which are all misdemeanor charges; Caleb Swiney was arrested on three misdemeanor charges: Possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance and a failure to appear warrant; Bailey Burton was taken into custody on misdemeanor charges including: Speeding, reckless driving, no child safety equipment on site and endangering the welfare of a minor; Jeremy O'Neal was arrested on criminal tres-

passing and public intoxication, which are misdemeanor offenses; and Ronnie Roland was taken into custody on misdemeanor charges, which include: Contempt of court and contempt of court - no payment.
