DVB to hire police chief By Lisa Mills At the December 9th City Council Meeting a motion was approved to hire a City Police Chief. A letter from the Arkansas Commission on Law Enforcement Standards and Training was presented to the council which stated that all requirements had been met to re-establish a city Police Department. The council approved advertising for a Police Chief after the Police Department Committee and city attorney determine requirements, salary, benefits, etc. Mayor Dodson stated that Sheriff Rick Hickman has been notified of the city’s plan to establish a city Police Department and end the contract between the city and county. Attending the meeting were Mayor Brian D o d s o n , Treasurer/Recorder Darlene Connor and council members Alice Metcalf, Richard Henry, Marie Flanagan, Raymond Watson, Carol Griffin and Lalisa Wright. Mayor Dodson asked Leah Woodall to give an
update on the Water and Sewer project. Woodall said she has been in continuous contact with Mr. Hilsdon. The city is eligible for two $30,000 grants to hire an engineer to start the plan which is the first step in applying for the grant for the project. Mayor Dodson also reported that a lot of work is being done on the “Robinson Building” restoration project. The council approved a 3% cost of living salary increase for city employees effective January 1, 2022. The council approved a building permit for work on the courthouse. Mayor Dodson stated that the city is going to have to start being diligent about enforcing building permits and restrictions, including RVs and campers. Sheriff Rick Hickman reported 137 patrols and 13 calls. The calls included 2 house fires, 1 breakin, 2 thefts, 4 disturbances, 2 civil standbys, 1 dog complaint, 1 mischief and 1 vehicle vs deer accident. Fire Chief Kelly Hutchinson reported 2 meetings and 2 house fires.

Storytime at the library... This little lady, Payton, was one of the participants at the Candycane Storytime on December 1st at the Hazen Public Library. All of the Prairie County libraries are holding Christmas events this month.
Hazen celebrated the holidays in Downtown City Park on Saturday. Santa and his helper came to take requests, the FCCLA had a cakewalk, the Art Club helped children make ornaments, the 4H handed out popcorn, the Methodist Church poured hot chocolate for everyone, and the Hazen Fire Department set up a marshmallow toasting station. CHS students attend conference... Carlisle High School FCCLA members attended the District IV Fall Leadership Conference at Sheridan High School on December 2.
