The Hazen School Board voted unanimously to authorize the issuance and delivery of the district’s bonds in their regular meeting held October 16 in the Hazen High School library.

Those in attendance were board members David Strohl, Vickie Skarda, Davey Williams, Richie

Ingle, Freddie Rogers, and Sandra Penn; along with Superintendent Bill Crowder and Principals Tiffany Glover and Clint Williams.

included an expulsion hearing. The student’s mother asked that the hearing be held in private, so the board went into executive session.

When they returned to the meeting, the board voted to expel the student until the end of the 201718 school year. Member Williams abstained from voting.

Principal Glover told the board about the upcoming math and science night to be held from 7 p.m. until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, October 24.

She said that the literacy night will be held on December 7th. She also said that the 6th -8th grade community helpers would be going to see an Edgar Allen Poe play soon.

Principal Williams reported that the 9th graders would be going to the state capital in November, and that the FCCLA members would be participating in the upcoming Star Events competition. He also said that senior Grant Shelman tied for 12th overall in the state school invitational tournament.

No other business was discussed, and the meeting was adjourned.

FTN Financial Capital Markets, a division of First Tennessee, won the bid by offering a rate of 3.062% for the principal amount of $6,095,000 issue dated November 9, 2017 with a maturity date of February 1, 2045.

The purchase price was reduced to $5,989,371.16.

Five firms bid on the bond refinancing.

McBryde told the board that there would be a $200,000 savings this year, with an overall savings of $728,284 over the life of the issue. The savings can be used for any purpose.

Farmers and Merchants Bank will be the trustee for the bonds.

In other business, the board approved the superintendent’s recommendation to renew the Renaissance Learning subscription for the elementary and high school libraries in the amount of $8,980.50 to be paid out of National School Lunch (NSL) funds.

Crowder also recommended, and the board approved, to rename the Hazen Elementary Library to the Beth Rogers Memorial Library.

Jenny Simmons spoke to the board about the money that had been donated for the library.

Simmons said so much money has been donated that they may end up funding a scholarship.

Master Gardeners honor Lifetime Members

New Master Gardener trainees met for their first class last Wednesday, October 18, in the Prairie County Courthouse in DeValls Bluff. The classes are through Zoom this year. Pictured are (l to r) Judy Burnett, Debbie Carpenter, Roxanne Bradow, Leonard Chamblee, Susan Winkler, and Sue Clayton. Carpenter and Clayton are mentoring the group through the program.

Piecemakers have meeting Prairie Piecemakers met Monday, October 16th at the Prairie County fair building for their regular monthly meeting.

Arriving early, several members worked on individual projects such as knitting, crocheting, handsewing binding to a newly finished quilt, and finishing fabriccovered folding chairs.

After a potluck lunch, the club meeting was held with 13 members present.

Shirley Evants presented a program on how to create a fabric machine cover that incorporates quilt blocks and is suitable for use with various sizes of sewing and embroidery machines.

The meeting ended with Sue Palsa challenging members to create one item per month that can be entered in the 2018 county fair.

Eunice Montgomery's chair won the Judges Award in Home Furnishings at the Prairie County Fair.

Club officers are President - Lawana Shuck; Vice President Sue Palsa; Secretary Alyeen Saunders; Treasurer Dora Holloway.

The club meets the third Monday of each month and is an Extension Homemakers Club.

Prairie County Master Gardeners meeting began with a reception for the five Lifetime Members on their roster: Sherry Bullock, Idena Grennwalt, Carolyn Marek, Patsy McMullen and Chris Weems. There were 13 members and 1 visitor in attendance.

Janet Turnage, president, presided. She told the honorees that the Club was honoring them for their help, work on the projects, and general encouragement and example through the

years.

Nine members reported that the “Christmas in October� fundraiser at Brinkley by Monroe County Master Gardeners has been very good and beautifully decorated.

The Zoom version of Master Gardeners training began Wednesday October 18, at the DeValls Bluff Courthouse. Four students were enrolled for the on-line course, the first one tried in Prairie County.

Each one of the students will have a men-

tor who will help understanding the lectures.

PCMG will furnish the meals. Plans were made for the breakfast and lunches. The day is from 8:00 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. for five Wednesdays in a row.

A workday was set for Thursday afternoon, October 26.

Members were given their summaries from the worksheets turned in at each meeting to check on and see if all work was listed.

Some plans were made for the Christmas Party.

Time and place will be announced next week.

GFWC has former HHS alumni for guest speaker this month

Last week I told all of you that I have a tendency toward being passive aggressive.

(Nathaniel would say it’s not a tendency, but a major character trait.)

I do try to hold it down when I can, but I’m going to practice that passive aggressiveness in this column today. Not toward my children, though.

Toward our new president, Donald Trump.

"I want the entire corrupt Washington establishment to hear and to heed the words I am about to say," Trump said. "When we win on Nov. 8, we are going to Washington, D.C., and we are going to drain the swamp." Does this sound familiar? This was one of the three 3word sound bites (along with “lock her up” and “build the wall”) that Pres. Trump used as mantras during the presidential campaign last year. So...has the swamp been drained?

Let’s look.

Just within the past 2 weeks, it has been reported that Treasury Secretary Steve Mnuchin took his new wife on a government airplane to see the total eclipse and look at all the gold in Fort Knox.

Now this guy is a former hedge fund manager, and he has a ton of money. So much so that his wife bragged on instagram about her designer outfit and accessories. And yet, instead of taking his own jet, Mnuchin took his trip on our taxpayer money. He also asked to use a military airplane for a trip to Europe for his honeymoon, but later thought better of it withdrew the request.

Then there is EPA Administrator Scott Pruitt, who had a $25,000 sound-proof booth built in his office so he could make private phone calls, even though there was already one sound-proof booth on another floor in his building. He is also so paranoid that he asked for 24/7 protection with 3 times the number of secret service agents than anyone else in his position has ever used.

And there was also Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin who took his wife on a 10 day trip to Europe to attend a few meetings. But they also hung around to attend a Wimbledon championship match, go shopping, cruise the Thames, and tour some historic sites. Our dollars paid for the flights of both husband and wife and a per diem for each that, according to the Washington Post, may have been as much as $3600 a day.

Then there is Health and Human Services Secretary Tom Price, who spent over a million dollars on flights to Europe and Asia with his wife (according to Politico) on tax money. But don’t worry.

He’s says that he is going to pay $55,000 of it back (that’s about a half percent of the total cost). No wonder he lost his job. But why was someone like that ever in office anyway?

Back in the days of the Exodus (yes, the real Exodus), Moses’ father-in-law once gave him some advice. He told Moses that he needed to delegate some of the leadership authority over the recently freed Israelites, and he listed the qualities to look for when selecting the leaders. Choose people who are capable, trustworthy, and not corrupt. (It’s Exodus 18:21 - you can look it up.) I would like to give our president the same

advice. But then, his trips to Mar-a-Lago cost us about a million dollars each, according to National Public Radio, and he seems to travel there every other week.

Go figure. Someone needs to remind our President that, just like in Biblical times, the ethics of an organization or a government are built from the top down. So, I would like to ask him to please take his own advice and “drain the swamp!”

Arc; Calvary, Stuttgart; and Bethlehem, DVB. Morris Chapel received "The Percentage Banner" and Faith received the "Attendance Banner."

The next youth rally will be at Calvary MB Church in Stuttgart, November 20, 2017.

Bethlehem youth presented a program, "Where is your "Hope" of Heaven?" It must be in the shed blood of Jesus for your sins, calling upon Him in repentance and believing He is the Son of God, that He died on the cross, was buried and resurrected for all.

Nothing else will pass God's judgment.

Fee for nematode diagnosis waived Thanks to the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board and Dr. Travis Faske, who is cooperating with us, the Arkansas Nematode Diagnostic Lab will waive the assay fee for soybean fields for the 2017 season. This is a continuation of on-going soybean nematode survey of the state. This year we also have an interest in how cover crops effect nematode populations, so we are expanding the survey to cover crops as well as soybeans. Below are the details. Please share with your growers and consultants.

If you or your grower (or consultant) have not already done so, we recommend that you take the on-line course, Collecting & Packaging Nematode Soil S a m p l e s

(http://courses.uaex.edu/).

You need to submit samples on-line through our DDDI program, so if you need a refresher on how to do this, the course will tell how.

Beginning immediately, the Arkansas Nematode Diagnostic Laboratory will be accepting soil samples for nematode assay from 1) Fields that are currently in soybean, 2) Fields that will be in soybean next year, 3) Fields that may be in longer term cropping systems that included soybean within the last 2-3 years, and 4) cover crops that are in rotation with soybeans. Please indicate the specific crop on the form.

Remember that apparently healthy fields may have nematodes not yet at an economic level

or do not show symptoms above ground as shown in the picture below, so sample these fields as well as those that may have a nematode problem. The assay fees for survey samples will be provided through a grant from the Arkansas Soybean Promotion Board. Here are the details: "We will accept samples directly from county agents, consultants, industry advisory personnel, or growers.

"The doorway for this survey will be the local county agents. There is no limit on the number of free samples that any county or individual can redeem.

Morgan D’Angelo given bridal shower Morgan D'Angelo, brideelect of Jacob Tipton, was honored with a bridal shower Sunday afternoon at Calvary Baptist Church Fellowship hall.

Morgan opened and displayed her gifts on a table covered with a floorlength white cloth. She was assisted by her mother and the hostesses.

Family members and guests were served cake and punch and rice krispie confections from a table covered with a white floor-length cloth with a white lace overlay.

The centerpiece was a vase with pink roses and

greenery nested in a white net collar with gold and pink accents and a gold and white sign, "Here Comes the Bride."

Besides her mother, Mrs. Kristie D'Angelo, another special guest was Alexis Murray from Cabot. Alexis will be her maid-of-honor at her wedding November 11.

Main Activities Fall harvest continued at a rapid pace. Fall tillage was being done with fall fertilization taking place. Hay began to be fed to supplement for dry pasture conditions.

Prairie County Retired Teachers Hold Meeting

By Chris Weems Lisa Bemberg, co-owner of Insurance Advantage, was guest speaker for the regular meeting of Prairie County Retired Teachers Unit.

She said there are no changes in the insurances plan from last year.The company offers Dental and Vision Insurance, Cancer and Heart and Stroke Lump Sum Plans, Long-term Care Insurance, Life Insurance, and Medicare-related Products including Prescription Drug Plans.

Members were reminded to send their prescriptions and the company now filling them, be sent to the office so they can check to see if they can be gotten somewhere else cheaper.

The next meeting will be the Christmas luncheon Tuesday, December 19, at 12:00 noon, at DeValls Bluff Methodist Church Fellowship Hall.

Senior Hornets bring home the trophy in 40 - 0 win over Des Arc Eagles

By Ross Harper Hazen defeated the rival Des Arc Eagles in a huge win Friday night. With several hundred fans of both towns watching, the Hornets performed well, just like they have been doing all season. After four quarters of hardplayed football, the final score came to 40-0.

The Hazen Hornets played one of their best games yet Friday night.

They showed pure dominance over their opponents throughout the game. Hazen got things going early in the first quarter with a touchdown run by Ay'Jon Green.

After the good conversion, the Hornets were up 8-0.

Both teams battled hard for the end-zone, until the

second quarter when Tarrell Penn scored Hazen's next touchdown.

The conversion was good and the Hornets were up 16-0. Later in the quarter, Hazen showed its defensive power when Blayne Toll tackled one of Des Arc's players in their end-zone for a safety.

With those extra two points, the Hornets stayed up 18-0 until after the half. In the third quarter, after stopping the Eagles on their first drive, Hazen scored on their first play on another run by Green. The conversion was good, and the score came to 26-0. The Hornets' fourth touchdown was scored on a keep by Toll, which was followed by an unsuccess-

ful conversion. At 32-0, the mercy rule was not quite in effect until the fourth quarter, when Toll found receiver Rasheed Mills downfield for a touchdown. With the good conversion, the score was set at 40-0 and the clock began to run. Neither team scored for the remainder of the night.

This win is especially momentous for the Hornets, not only for being a conference win, but also being the "Battle of the Prairie" and having a trophy involved for the winner. Now 5-0 in conference, the Hornets face the Marvell Mustangs at home this Friday.

Des Arc Junior Eagles defeat Hazen Junior Hornets 30-0 0

by Ross Harper The Hazen Junior Hornets struggled Thursday against the Des Arc Eagles. The final score of the night came to 0-30 for a Hornet loss.

Thursday's game did not go well at all for Hazen players and fans. Hazen's offense simply could not find enough weaknesses in the Eagle defense, and the Hornet defense struggled to contain Des Arc's offense. In the first quar-

ter, the Eagles would put up one score against the Hornets, along with a two-point conversion.

Down 0-8, Hazen continued to be shut down by the Eagles and allowed another touchdown in the second quarter. The conversion was no-good, and the score remained 0-14 until the second half.

When the Hornets kicked off to Des Arc to start the second half, the ball was recovered by freshman Anthony Wilson.

However, this was still not enough for a Hazen touchdown. The Eagles would score twice more in the third quarter, and neither team scored in the fourth. The final score was 0-30.

This loss was fairly disheartening for the Junior Hornets. It sets their current record at 3-4 in conference and 3-5 overall.

They hope to make it 4-5 as they play their final game Thursday against the Mustangs at Marvell.
