The Hazen HIPPY (Home Instruction for Parents of Preschool Youngsters) October Group Meeting was at the Hazen Community Center Monday, October, 10th 2016.Coordinator Jennie Gates welcomed the families to the group meeting. Each child received safety sticker page after signing in.

Then everyone gathered around the fire department to listen to to Mr. Doyen Martin tell the children about fire safety. After that Jarold Walker showed the kids all the fire gear that a fire fighter wears and what he looks like in it.

After each child heard him talk about the fire equipment, they got to go through the fire trucks. The Hazen and Devalls Bluff Fire Department opened

their door and let the children explore. After everyone finished with fire safety, they went to see Mr. Arlin VanHouten who showed them his police car and then fingerprinted each child. After everyone finished looking at the vehicles and getting fingerprinted we drew for a door prize. HIPPY gave away two storybooks.

The winner of the story book from Mrs. Linda’s class was Kristofer Chidister. The winner of Mrs. Katelynn’s Class was Cathryn Thomas.

HIPPY would like to thank the City of Hazen for letting us use the Hazen Community Center and the Hazen and Devalls Bluff Fire Department for their time and bringing the trucks and speaking. We would also like to thank

Arlin Vanhouten on the Hazen Police Department for coming and fingerprinting all the children. HIPPY would like to extend a special thank you to all the parents and children who attended. I-4 40 lanes closed east of Hazen Maintenance work will require temporary lane closures on I-40 east of Hazen, according to Arkansas State Highway and Transportation Department (AHTD) officials.

The inside eastbound lane from mile marker 197 to 202 will be closed between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., on Monday, October 17, weather permitting.

The inside westbound lane from mile marker 202 to 197 will be closed between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., on Tuesday, October 18, weather permitting.

A moving lane closure of the outside east and westbound lanes will occur from mile marker 197 to 202 between 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m., on Wednesday, October 19 and Thursday, October 20, weather permitting.

Obituaries Markoleta Elizabeth Black 86 of Hazen, died Friday, October 14, 2016. She was born November 10, 1929 in Tolville, Arkansas to the late Dewey Hobson Toll and Nellie Newkirk Toll.

She was a member of St. Albans Episcopal Church in Stuttgart and also attended St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tollville. She graduated from DeValls Bluff High School in 1948 where she played basketball and met her future husband Arnold Black who she married November 19, 1948. Along with raising four children she worked full time as an assistant to Dr. Travis Matthew's, M.D., a long-time physician in Hazen, Dr. John Vowell, D.D.S., a longtime dentist in Hazen, Proctor Tire Services, and Hazen Public Library.

She was preceded in death by her parents, and her brother Dewey Toll.

She is survived by her husband Arnold Black of Hazen, son Dickie (Linda) Black of Pine Bluff, son Danny (Leslie) Black of of Little Rock, daughter Paula (Phil) Prislovsky of Stuttgart, daughter Karen Black of Hazen, and sister Gladys Hatfield of DeValls Bluff, grandchildren, Jennifer (Thomas) Burnett of Little Rock, Jamie (Chris) Dennis Little Rock, Gabriel (Genevieve) McTigrit of Little Rock, Lauren Black of White Hall, Carly (Jake Bokker) of Hazen, Kellie Black of Bryant, Meryl Prislovsky of Hazen, Jillian (Justin) Horton of Fayetteville, Ariel (Vince) Tate of Des Arc, twelve great grand children, and a host of

The family is grateful to the staff at Hospice Home Care in Pine BLuff for their compassionate care provided to Markoleta and her family.

The funeral service will be Monday, October 17, 2016 at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Tollville at 10:00 a.m. officiated by Reverend Darrel Slayton and assisted by Billy Hawkins.

Interment will follow in Oakland Cemetery in DeValls Bluff.

Arrangements will be done by West Brook Funeral Home in Hazen.

Virginia Coffman

King

80 of DeValls Bluff, died September 26, 2016. She was born on February 23, 1936 to Guy and Viola King. She left DeValls Bluff after graduation from high school, but returned in 1988. She served on the city counci, was active in the local Ruritan club, and attended Bethelem Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include her children Linda Ludene “Clyde” Coffman and and Ronnie Bearden of DeValls Bluff, Gail Adams of Stuttgart, and Debbie Foster of Seattle, WA. Her sister Ludene Treadway, 5 grandchildren, 5 great grandchildren, 2 great-great grandchildren, and 3 nephews.

Her parents, husband Vance, granddaughter Melissa Lewis, and her

brother Charles King preceeded her in death. A memorial service will be held on October 22 at 1:00 p.m. at Bethelem Missionary Baptist Church in DeValls Bluff.

Memorials can be made to the church.

Joy Palsa Mason 84, of Carlisle, died peacefully on Saturday, October 8, 2016 at Lakewood Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in North Little Rock due to complications from Alzheimer’s. Her strong will to live, unwavering faith in God and the love and prayers of family and friends lessened her burden in her final days.

A longtime resident of Carlisle, and a regular, active member of the First Baptist Church of Carlisle for decades, Joy was a faithful servant to God. As a loyal member of the Bible Study Fellowship for 8 years, she loved her church and much of her life was spent in service of it.

Joy was born in Woodlawn, Arkansas (Lonoke County) on August 8, 1932 to parents, John Edward and Carra (Johnson) Palsa who both preceded her in death. In 1949, the same year she graduated from Carlisle High School, she married her husband for the next 53 years, William Archie Mason, Jr., to whom she remained a loyal and faithful partner until his death in 2002.

Known for her kind and gentle disposition and strength from faith and family, Joy was a loving and compassionate wife,

mother, and friend.

Along with her dedication to church and family, Joy was an administrative assistant for the Superintendent of Carlisle Schools for years and also spent time in the trust department at Citizen’s Bank & Trust in Carlisle. She also was involved in several other civic organizations including the Carlisle Chamber of Commerce, Progressive Club and especially, the Carlisle Alumni Association.

In addition to her brothers, Jim (Jean) Palsa of Winchester, Arkansas and Tim (Sue) Palsa of Carlisle, Joy is survived by her two children, John William Mason (Len) of Sherwood, Arkansas and LaQuita Mason Bennett (Billy) of Carlisle and three grandchildren, John Mason Bennett (Miranda) of Oxford, Mississippi; Chad Michael Bennett (Brea) of Carlisle, and Amber Bennett Bynum (Martin) of Little Rock, and eight great-grandchildren, Lily Bennett and Weston Bennett; Mary Mason Bennett, Brooks Bennett, and Walker Bennett; Bennett Bynum, LauraBeth Bynum and Welles Bynum and many other beloved nieces, nephews, friends and relatives.

A visitation for family and friends of Joy was held from 5:00 to 8:00 P.M. on Wednesday, October 12 at Westbrook Funeral Home in Hazen.

Funeral Services were held at 10:00 A.M. on Thursday, October 13 at the First Baptist Church in Carlisle. Burial was in the Carlisle Cemetery.

Memorials in memory of Joy can be made to the Carlisle Alumni Association, 825 East 6th Street, Carlisle, Arkansas 72024.

Brother Mcaren’s mother was in our services today.

I have not been feeling well lately. I had a couple trips to the doctor for shoulder and arm pain, very painful.

Had a call from Charlene last week. Her health is not been good, she moved into a smaller apartment.

I had a call from Charles. He was at a

church meeting. But he has had a bad bronical trouble.

We were glad to hear about a revival meeting at Morris Chapel Church.

We wanted to attend but I just don’t like to drive that far after dark anymore. Our thoughts and prayers are with them.

Johnny came by one evening for a few minutes. They stay busy.

They seem to be doing alright.

We just wish everyone good health and Happiness.

DVB City Council votes to close alley The DeValls Bluff City Council held their monthly meeting on Thursday, October 13. All council members were present except for Mayor Kenny Anderson and Alderman April Anderson.

The meeting began at 6:00 p.m. with a prayer, then the previous month’s minutes were approved.

Old business included the approval of an ordinance to close an alley located by City Council member Jackie Adcock’s house in DeValls Bluff.

The alley closing was previously discussed in a public hearing on August 15, 2016. The public hearing resulted in the agreement that the alley would be closed as it was not in use, no power lines would be effected, and under the condition that Adcock provided an easement.

The city council unanimously passed the ordinance.

In new business, the council appointed a new Budget Committee.

Richard Henry, Alice Metcalf, and Bill Arnold were all voted on to the new Budget Committee.

Fire Chief Doyen Martin informed the council members that the fire department was doing good financially and that there were several new volunteers.

Police Chief Charles Atkins reported 18 warrants. Citations and warrants issued included one

public intoxication, one criminal trespassing, one unlawful entry, one hit and run, one leaving the scene of an accident, and one defective equipment.

County Assistance Calls included one traffic call, one residents call, and one medical call. There was one theft of property disturbance, one civil stand by, and funeral escorted reported.

Atkins also told the council about a new program at the DeValls Bluff High School gym that will allow students to be tutored by retired teachers. The program will allow students, parents, and the retired teachers of the community to become involved with each other and the student’s education.

Gabby Delgiorno informed the city council members that he is looking at prices for metal buildings to house all the town vehicles, including the dump truck and backhoe. The buildings will protect the equipment from the weather and help prevent the seats and other parts from dry rotting. The council decided to vote to purchase the buildings after Delgiorno provides more prices to be compared.

City Attorney Mike Stuart then brought up the matter of a 1989 Ford van which originally belonged to the DeValls Bluff fire department.

Brittany Hurley to Wed Parker Aycock

Joe and Sheila Hurley of Hazen are pleased to announce the engagement of their daughter, Brittany Elizabeth Hurley to Parker Scott Aycock, son of Nanette and Scotty Belford and Billy and Cindy Aycock of Hazen. Brittany is the granddaughter of the late James and Lula Hurley of Little Rock.

She is also the granddaughter of Billy Beene and the late Geneva Beene of El Dorado.

Parker is the grandson of Woody and Cindy Hill of Hazen and Jerry and Joanna Parker of Mt Ida. He is also the grandson of Jerry Aycock and the late Scotty Aycock of Hazen.

The van has recently been used by Prairie County to transport prisoners. The city council members, police chief, and fire chief all agreed that the van is more beneficial where it is. The city council then voted to have the title signed and officially given to the county.

The meeting was then adjourned.

Brittany is a 2009 graduate of Hazen High School and a 2013 graduate of the University of Central Arkansas with a Bachelor of Business Administration in Insurance and Risk Management. She is currently employed with Truck Centers Insurance Group in North Little Rock. Parker is a 2009 graduate of Hazen High School and is currently employed with GP&S Farms in Slovak.

The wedding will be Saturday, December 3, 2016 at 5:30 pm at Sts Cyril and Methodius Catholic Church in Slovak. All friends and family are invited to attend.

Hazen Elementary School pumpkin investigation

Grand Prairie Quilt Society holds monthly meeting HES kindergarten classes conducted their pumpkin investigations on Friday, October 14. After measuring and weighing their pumpkins, the students carved them into jack-o-lanterns and counted and roasted their seeds.

The Grand Prairie Quilt Society held their quarterly Sit ' Sew on October 12 at the Stuttgart Public Library with 10 members present.

Glenda opened the meeting with the thought for the day, "I meant to be good at the fabric store, I really did, but then I went inside."

Marsha and Maeola reported on their trip to Mansfield Missouri for Wilder Days, the celebration of Laura Ingalls Wilder at Rocky Ridge Farm. While there they attended a quilt presentation by Judy Wampler entitled, "Laura's life through quilts" It was a wonderful exhibit of many different quilts that illustrated episodes from Laura's life and from her books.

At the September 24 Stitching Circle at the Plantation Museum at Scott everyone had a good time working on their projects. The October 22 stitching circle will be the last one for 2016.

They will take up again in January.

Glenda showed two vintage quilts that she has rehabilitated for a friend who wants to pass them down in her family. She also had a sample of the batting that had been inside one of the quilts.

It was handmade as it still had the leavings from the gin stuck in the cotton.

Shelley had a cute "pocket" organizer she had made from jeans' pockets.

She also dis-

played an "Auntie Acid" fabric panel. Everyone had a good laugh reading the different "sayings" of Auntie Acid.

Sherrye showed a cute quilted baby comforter in a pinwheel pattern for a newborn.

After the meeting, members got busy making quilt tops for the Dorcas quilters group in Gillett.

The Dorcas group provided the blocks and everyone enjoyed sewing together the blocks as they were already

designed and ready to sew.

When hunger pangs called, lunches were gathered and everyone settled down for some good visiting and munching.

Michele was able to join the group for lunch. It was great to see you, Michele!

During lunch Maeola played a video from Wilder Days of "Pa's fiddle" being played at Rocky Ridge Farm. Once a year the museum takes Pa's fiddle out of the case and the old tunes are played for everyone to enjoy.

Maeole and Marsha demonstrated knitting, crocheting and quilting at the High Cotton on the Bayou celebration at Scott Plantation Settlement on Oct. 1.

Maeola showed a video of one of the volunteers with her spinning wheel spinning wool into yarn.

After lunch, sewing machines whirred once more and a dozen quilt tops were assembled during the day.

The next meeting will be November 9 with Miss Mary Harrison as a special guest.

She will regale us with her sewing adventures and will have several treasures to share with the group.

GFWC Talks Chemicals and Flu Shots

By Chris Weems “Cleaning Without Chemicals” was the topic of the lesson given by Libby Hutson for the GFWC Elsie McCain Club Thursday night, October 13, at Murry’s Restaurant. “The fact that some of the chemicals can be toxic to people and pets is the reason I chose this topic for tonight,” Libby said.

“Most of the chemical substitutes are items that are commonly found in the family’s kitchen, “she said. “Coconut oil may be the least common of the Items suggested,” she said.”it is used to clean and preserve the wooden cutting board.

She said, “Of course, vinegar and baking soda top the list of having the most uses, and lemon juice can be used to deodorize the microwave and disposal. Salt and ice can also be used in the disposal, especially if it has grease in it.” Libby finished her lesson by giving each member a microfiber cleaning cloth that is to be used to buff a shine on any surface without adding anything to the cloth.

Chris Weems, president, presided for the meeting with six members present. Minutes of the first meeting were read and approved. The financial

report was given and dues collected.

Chris announced that the flu shots will be given Wednesday October 19, at the Fair Grounds near Hazen. Also, at the next meeting World Food Day will be celebrated with members bringing food items to be taken to the DHS Food Pantry. That will be November 3.

A letter was read from Vicki Skarda, a retired Teacher and a member of Delta Gamma Organization. She was asking the Club and or individual members to donate to the Margaret Fisher Literacy Fund that sponsors the Dolly Parton Imagination Library for Prairie County, which provides free books to children

Senior Hornets Pull Off Second Win of the Season Against Augusta Red Devils

The Hazen Hornets beat the Augusta Red Devils Friday in an enormous comeback win in Augusta. Being down

8-24 at half, Hazen was able to turn the tables to end the game in a 4224 victory. This success is greatly needed to help

secure a spot in the playoffs.

The Hazen Junior Hornets unsurprisingly gained another win, a 50-0 shutout, Thursday at Hazen, this week against the Augusta Red Devils. With only two games left, it is looking quite hopeful that Hazen Junior High will be undefeated two years in a row.

As usual, the Hornets

began Thursday's game with a quick score, in this case a short run by Toll into the end-zone.

After the two extra points, Hazen was up 80 against the Devils. A fumble recovery by Buchanan gave the ball back to the Hornet offense. Driving down the field, they allowed Adkins the 14 yards he

needed for the touchdown. Another conversion and the Red Devils were down 16-0. Again in possession of the ball, Augusta's quarterback managed to find not his own receiver but Quincy McAdoo downfield, who ran the interception back for a touchdown.

Hazen failed at the conversion, but were still up 22-0. Still in the first quarter, the Hornets stopped the Devils again, and this time Gray ran for 40 yards and a score when back in possession. After a good 2-point try, Hazen was up 30-0 with seconds remaining in the quarter. Once again wrecking the Augusta offense, Terrell Penn scooped and scored for another defensive touchdown. Two extra points later and the Red Devils were facing a 38-0 scoreboard. In the second quarter, the Hornets scored only once; a 41-

yard run by Green followed by a failed conversion.

The score remained 44-0 until after halftime, when Shedrick Ward recovered a fumble and scored in the third quarter. A no-good conversion set the final score at 50-0. The remainder of the game consisted of no scoring as several of the seventh graders again got playing opportunities. Hazen still had many tricks to upset the Augusta offense, including a fumble recovery

This victory makes the Hornets' current record for the season 7-0, 6-0 in conference, but also a 17 game winning streak when counting back to the 2014 win against Des Arc. Hazen will attempt to beat this very team for three years in a row as they travel to Eagle Field this Thursday.

The Red Devils, though, fired back with one more touchdown of their own, but still no conversion, for a score of 8-24. With a couple of minutes left in the half, a pass by Bonds to Pargo comprised the second Hornet touchdown, and another conversion cut into the Devil lead 1624. Quickly in the third quarter, Duck ran for his second touchdown of the night, and two more points tied the game at 24-24. After a long drive by Augusta, Pargo recovered the Devil fumble in the end-zone for a touchback, giving

Hazen the ball. The Hornet offense then set up sophomore Austin Hill for his first touchdown of the game, and the failed conversion put Hazen up 30-24.

Another fumble gave the Hornets the ball again, who immediately allowed Hill to run for his second touchdown, this time 51 yards. A no-good conversion increased the Hornet lead to 36-24. In the fourth quarter, Hazen continued to prevent another score from Augusta. Soon, sophomore quarterback Jacob Weems kept the ball and ran for the final touchdown of the night, and the failed conversion set the final score at 42-24 for a Hornet win. During this game, however, junior Trevor Duck was seriously injured and had to be taken to the hospital via an ambulance.

This comeback win for Hazen is huge as they try to make it to the playoffs. Still, any more losses would be detrimental to these hopes.

They will play the Des Arc Eagles in Hazen this Friday as they try to keep this dream alive.

Shelman Named 2A State Golf Champ

Grant Shelman, a student of Hazen High School, won overall to take the title as 2A STATE CHAMPION. Grant shot a -4 (67) to claim his title, beating out his closest competitor by two strokes. With this win, Grant was invited to compete in the 2016 Arkansas State Golf Association High School Overall Golf Championship at Pleasant Valley Country Club in Little Rock. After a rainy day of competition Shelman ended the day tied for 14th with an 87.Only the top 3 winners from each of the 7 classifications are invited to participate in this tournament.

Mr. Eans has 6 years of experience on the Prairie County Quorum Court; Mr. Holloway has 20 plus years of experience and is considered to be an expert on budget and other county matters. Both Mr. Eans and Mr. Holloway have proven their ability to work with others on the court and the County Judge to address any issue.

We hope all voters are aware that in January 2017, we will have three new constitutional offices filled and without the leadership of Mr. Eans and Mr. Holloway we will have 1/3 of the (9) Quorum Court members without experience in county government. That is a pretty drastic change to consider. The newly elected Sheriff, Clerk and Treasurer are going to need the institutional knowledge these incumbent court members have as they transition into office.

None of these candidates are seeking office because they have axes to grind and they are not interested in playing political games or taking part in dirty tricks.

All these men and women bring honesty, integrity, experience and dedication to the positions they seek. This decision is far more important to our future than one’s political party choice.

These five individuals have probably met most of the voters or will soon. We believe and have faith in their ability and desire to treat every resident of Prairie County with the respect they deserve regardless of where they live or what their station in life is.
