Hornet True Value and Lilypad hold celebrations

The Hazen Hornet True Value store held its ribbon cutting ceremony on Friday, October 9, at 10:00 a.m. with all of their employees and members of the Hazen Chamber of Commerce in attendance. The was closed when Robert and Dee Black retired, but it has been opened up again by Haley and Craig Wilson, who also own Jackrabbit True Value in Lonoke. David Nettles will manage the store.

Ashley Parchman’s Lilypad on Main Street in Des Arc has expanded with floor space, allowing for more merchandise for customers to see and buy. Chris Weems selected as HHS Honorary Alumna In 2019, the Hazen High School Alumni Association voted to recognize people who are not HHS alumni, but who have made great contributions to the Hazen School District over the years. This year’s Fall Honorary HHS Alumni Award was presented to Christine Weems, affectionately known as Mrs. Chris. Miss Christine Smith of Carlisle, a 1952 graduate of Henderson State Teachers College, now Henderson State University, started her teaching career in Hazen High School in the fall of 1952. She married Charles Lynn Weems in 1955. He took his commission from ROTC when he graduated from the University of ArkansasFayetteville and spent two years in Korea with the Army.
Rick Stallings and Debbie Carlyle presented the award to Mrs. Chris (center). Charles, who was a Distinguished Military student, went on loan with the Air Force and had 72 combat missions in Korea as an aerial observer before his discharge. He returned home and took up farm-
ing with his father as he had done during his high school years. They continued to live in Hazen until his death in 2002. Ms. Chris taught Home Economics for 39 years, and sponsored FHA all
those years plus sponsoring the Yearbook twenty five of those years. After her retirement, Ms. Chris and her husband became charter members of the Hazen Lions Club and she
served as president two terms. She also served several years as secretary of the Prairie County Single Parent Scholarship Fund and is a member of the Committee of 100, a group of Arkansas women who support the Ozark Folk Center at Mountain View. She helped start the Prairie County Hope Chest to help those in need, and she is a long time member of the Elsie McCain Club. She is also involved in the Eastern Star, the Prairie County Democratic Party, and the Prairie County Master Gardeners. Throughout the years, she has held many roles at the Hazen Calvary Baptist Church. She has often been one of those volunteers who gets the work done but goes unseen.

DAHS wins food pantry pileup...
Des Arc High School won the Prairie County Food Pantry Pile Up competition this year with 3060 non-perishable food items collects. Hazen High School collected 1913 items. All of the food will go to the Prairie County Food Pantry.
