Walmer Park helps spread the warmth this winter

Walmer Park Shopping Centre has once again demonstrated itscommitmenttowelfareby supporting the Community Chest Winter Woolly collection.

This annualinitiative, whichis aimedatproviding warmth tothose inneed during the colder winter months, isalifeline formanyindividuals and families.

The Winter Woolly Collection encourages visitors to Walmer Park Shopping Centre to donate winterclothing, including jackets,sweaters, scarves, hats, and blankets for either adults or children.

Theseitems arethensorted and distributedby The CommunityChestoftheEastern Cape to various beneficiaries throughout the city.

This year, like previous years, Walmer Park Shopping Centre hasnot onlydonated 100warm blanketsas abulk donation to this initiative, but hascommitted tobeingone of the convenient drop-off points for public donations.

This year, the shopping centres managementcontinuedto SharetheWarmth by responding to a social media request for blanketsmade by the Eastern Province Child and Youth CareCentre by donating 50 warm blankets to the organisation.

It doesnt stopthere, asa continuedsupport tothesurrounding Walmercommunity,50blankets werealsodonatedtoAlgoaBayCouncilfor the Aged, Buffelsfontein Retirement Village.

Abigpart ofourmission is communityinvolvement andsupport, theWinterdrive is one of many initiatives sup-

ported by Walmer Park throughout the year,” marketing manager Deveda Bloem said.

Walmer Park Shopping Centre, under the ownership of GrowthpointProperties, aligns with Growthpoint’s corporate socialresponsibility focus through its active support of the community.

Walmer Park is actively engaged in social initiatives aimed at benefiting the local

community. Theseinitiatives reflect a commitmentto social responsibility and community support.

One ofthe keyareas offocus forWalmer Parkis supporting education and youth development, by being a standing sponsor for The Herald’s School Quiz.

The shopping centre has beeninvolved invariousprojects that provide resources and support to local NPOs.

These range fromthe NationalCupcakes forKidswith Cancereach Septembertoa Valentine’s Daycampaign where social media followers were askedto nominatea charitycloseto theirheartto win a R5,000 Gift Card.

With thousands of votes, the Isithembiso Babies Home and the Algoa Bay Council for theAged eachreceiveda R5,000GiftCardfromWalmer Park Shopping Centre.

During the centre’s festive activities, two initiatives were supported.

The Hospice Treeof Light was displayed inthe shopping centre for the two months ofthe festiveseason, calling for shopper donations to the St Francis Hospice Care Centre.

This organisation provides palliative care topersons suffering fromthreatening and/or life-limitingcondi-

tions.

Togetherwith thecallfor donations, each year Walmer Parkhosts acharity-runfestive wrapping station, where all equipment andspace is sponsored and any proceeds made during the wrapping stationare donatedtoan NPO this pastyear thestationwasrunbytheLionsofSt Croix.

In addition, Walmer Park places a strong emphasis on health and wellness.

The centre regularly hosts health awarenesscampaigns and collaborates with local health organisations to offer freehealthscreeningsandeducational workshops for the community.

These initiatives aim to promote healthy living and provide valuable health information to the public.

WalmerPark isalsodedicated to environmental sustainability.

The shopping centre has implemented severalgreen initiatives to reduce its environmental footprint.

This includes waste management programmes,energy-saving measures, rain water harvesting and promoting recycling among retailers.

Theireffortsare partofa broader strategy to encourage sustainablepractices within the community.

Moreover, Walmer Park actively supports local charities and non-profitorganisations through fundraisingevents and donation drives.

Todate, ISUZU’s manufacturingoperations havebeen certified as zero-waste-tolandfill, exemplifying excellence in recycling and re-use.

ISUZU has also been exploring projects in the environmentspace thatcould benefit society.

In this regard,ISUZU providedresources (wastematerial) in responseto a tragic story whena firedestroyed elderlyGogo Selinah'shome in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.

ISUZUrallied toprovide herwith innovativesupport whererepurposed wastematerialsfrom ourmanufacturingand logisticsoperations were used tobuild Gogo Selinah a new,sustainable home, demonstrating a sustainable approach to community aid.

AddHopeservesupa solutionforKhayalethu

KFC local franchisee AKM Foods recentlydonated much-needed kitchenappliancestoitslong-standingAdd Hope beneficiary, the ACVV Khayalethu Child and Youth Care Centre.

KFC’s AddHope now in its 15th year found a powerfulwayto unitestaffand customers in the fight against hunger.

Relying on thepower of a

R2donation beingaddedat KFC tills, and contributions from KFC, AddHope has raised R1bn sinceits inception in2009 andpartners withmorethan130nonprofit organisations (NPOs) to feed more than 150,000 children every dayacross thecountry, helping them learn,grow and thrive.

The funds raised through Add Hope are administered

by the KFC Social Responsibility Trust.

All proceedsgo toNPOs which use themoney to provide children inneed and insome instances,theirfamilies with vital nutrition.

The ACVV Khayalethu ChildandYouthCareCentrein Kragga Kamma Road, Theescombe, has been registered as achildren’s home with the Department of So-

cial Development since October 22 1996.

The centre provides intervention programmes and alternative carefor childrenat risk, specifically boys, between the agesof five and 18.

Thehomehas beenabeneficiary of theAdd Hope programmefor morethansix years.

However, feedingchildren

every day has led to wear and teartothehome’sappliances, necessitating replacements.

AKM Foods, as the KFC franchisee,steppedintooffer support.

Withthe helpof Rafi’s Appliances and Equipment, the idealappliancesforthehome agas stove,fridgeand freezer were sourced.

“Without KFC Add Hope support,we wouldnothave

been able togive our boys the balanced meals they need,” the centre’s director, Marietjie van der Merwe, said.

“We would alsolike to thank AKM Foodsand Rafi’s fortheir supportinallowing usto continuefeedinggreat meals.”

Celebrating 35 years of the Volkswagen Community Trust

Established in 1989, the Volkswagen Community Trust is celebrating 35 yearsof making a differencein local communities.

The trust supports corporate socialinvestment through programmes that cultivate the learning, social and creative skills needed by the broader Nelson Mandela Bay community to enable people to empower themselves economically and socially.

Italso investsininitiatives inthepriority areasofeducation, youth development, healthandwellbeingandemployee volunteerism.

Among its successes over the past 35 years are:

● 15 nonprofit organisations supported through the provision of vehicles;

● An estimatedR90m investedinsupportofexternalNGO partners;

● Atotalinvestmentofabout R620m in CSI projects;

● 6,854 childrenreached and 144 teachers trained through various literacy initiatives;

● 1,202 pupilssupported in learningbytheestablishment of the Ikhwezi Lomso Early

ChildhoodDevelopmentCentre in Kariega;

● About 350,000youths supported through the loveLife Youth Centre andits programmes;

● 147 businesses assisted and 608 job opportunities created through the Volkswagen Business Support Centre, in partnership with Raizcorp;

● More than5,700 participants (Volkswagenemployees and theirloved ones) in Show of Hands volunteer events,tothe benefitofthe local community.
