The rolling terrain at Grandview Golf Club makes for a unique golfing experience By Stuart Hirsch The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON — An avid golfer, traveling salesman and Pendleton resident, Warren Hubble can hit the links just about anywhere. But the course he comes back to again and again, the one he calls home, is Grandview Golf Course. “Like a lot of places, it’s the people who make the difference,” said Hubble, vice president of Grandview’s Men’s Club. Grandview has “had its ups and downs” over the years because of budget cuts, he concedes, but the combination of a challenging course and friendly atmosphere make the overall golfing experience there

thoroughly rewarding. “There are a lot of courses that might be in better shape, but for what you pay to play and the great camaraderie, Grandview is a terrific place,” Hubble said. A lot of people in Madison County apparently agree with his assessment. Grandview was named the best golf course in Madison County in The Herald Bulletin’s annual Best of Madison survey. Built in 1925, Grandview is one of the oldest municipal golf courses in Indiana, according to Anderson’s city website. At 5,554 yards, it’s a relatively 18-hole course, said Todd Winlan, who’s managed the course since 1997, and has been golfing there since he was a kid. What makes the course particularly

unique in the flatlands of Central Indiana is its rolling terrain, Winlan said. “Grandview is a good test for a golfer because it has a couple undulating greens so managing your game to get the right angle to the pin is very important on this course,” he said. Another special feature is that the first and second holes follow the path of the White River. During his tenure as Grandview’s golf pro, a number of improvements have occurred Winlan said. Golf cart paths were added in 1999-2000, an outside pavilion was built, and the pro shop was expanded. As a leisure activity, golf has been hit hard by continuing economic challenges, but Winlan said he’s worked to win back members by promoting business and orga-

nization golf outings, and offering season passes at a reasonable cost. Like Hubble, Cindy Clendenen, president of Grandview’s women’s club, could golf a lot of places. She joined in 1999 to play with her father and grandfather. She said the women’s group is one of the largest in the state, and one of the reasons is the laid back atmosphere. On “Women’s Guest Day,” which occurs in the early summer, the chance to play Grandview regularly draws more than 70 women golfers from around the state. “I wouldn’t even consider going to another club,” she said. Best bartender keeps it simple By Baylee Pulliam The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON — David Allen is a “Crownon-the-rocks” kind of guy. “Keep it simple,” said Allen, reaching under the bar as he shovels ice into a glass. “Everybody wants all these complicated drinks, but I don’t need anything fancy.” For Allen, “simple” is a departure from his work tending Hoosier Park’s Double R Bar, an island awash in slot machines, table games and carnivalesque neon glitz. But he’s not complaining. “Let’s just say life is pretty easy,” said Allen, flashing a crooked, toothy grin. “I don’t have too many bad days.” The festive casino floor atmosphere is a big part of that, he said — after all, who could have a bad day when every day is a little like Mardi Gras? The other part is the people, like Maribeth Spencer, whose Jack and Coke is waiting for her before her foot hits the top step leading up to the bar. “What can I say?” said Spencer, of Westfield. “He knows what I like.” Like most bartenders, Allen fills many roles — including confidant, buddy and amateur psychologist — for many people. “It’s like any bar,” he said. “When I look at their I.D.s, they say Ohio, Michigan, Illinois and, yeah, Indiana...I’ll sit here and have a conversation with them.” That takes talent, considering he does it while running laps behind the circular bar, collecting bottles and making drinks. The key is authenticity: “Don’t try to be someone you’re not,” he said. “It makes it easier to connect with people.” And, while he can’t give his customers gambling pointers — Hoosier Park employees aren’t allowed to play the casino games — he does offer friendly advice on how to get the biggest bang for

Instead of pushing big-ticket items, he points to the bargains, like the Long Island Iced Tea, which costs just over $4. Allen’s friendly personality is “part of what makes him so attractive,” Spencer said. “The others (bartenders) are nice

and all, but you’ll see people come up here and wait for him to be free.” For Allen, landing a casino bar-tending job was “pure luck.” Fresh from school, he landed a job working the door at Harry’s Chocolate Shop, a West Lafayette drinks joint targeting Pur-

due University alumni. One day they told him he was training on the bar. He worked at Harry’s for about seven years, and started at Hoosier Park in 2009. “Now there’s nothing else I want to do,” he said, leaning against the bar. “I love my job.”

Best nurse celebrating 40 years at St. Vincent Anderson Nancy Pitcock knew she wanted to be in healthcare from a very young age By Abbey Doyle The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON — In four decades of nursing, Nancy Pitcock has worked in every area of the hospital involving nursing. All 40 of her years in the field have been spent at St. Vincent Regional Hospital Anderson, with the last four years as the chief nursing officer. “I always wanted to help other people,” Pitcock said. “Nursing felt like the right thing for me to do.” She was humbled at being named the best nurse in Madison County by The Herald Bulletin readers. “It is an honor to be recognized for the work I do every day,” Pitcock said. “I

don’t feel it is any more important than what everyone else is doing. It is always an honor to be recognized for doing something that I love to do. It is something I have a passion about and enjoy helping staff and patients.” She received her registered nurse diploma from Holy Cross School of Nursing, a bachelor’s degree in social work from Saint Mar y-of-the-Woods College and a master’s in nursing in 2012 from Ball State University. She worked in the emergency department for the majority of that time, 1975 to 2004. Pitcock said she’d wanted to be a nurse from a very young age and felt like she had something to give them to help them in

their situation. In her current role as chief nursing officer, she isn’t giving patients direct care, but she ensures the nursing staff has everything they need to best help patients. One of her favorite positions has been as a hospice nurse. Pitcock was the first the hospital had. “I worked with the physicians and helped develop a plan of care one-on-one with patients during the most vulnerable times of their lives,” she said. “I enjoyed that.” Pitcock, with other hospital staff, has been traveling to Haiti for nearly 20 years for medical missions where she assists in surgery. St. Vincent President Tom VanOsdol said Pit-

cock has “tremendous experience,” and her compassionate caring for every individual patient has her living out the hospital’s missions and core values. “Her support of our nursing staff is amazing,” he said. “She is a nurse’s nurse and a leader in our organization. She regularly is out on the patient units rolling up her sleeves and helping out delivering care to do whatever is needed.” VanOsdol said Pitcock is very deserving of the honor and an invaluable leader and representative of the hospital. Pitcock has been married to Jerry for 40 years. They have two sons — Joshua (married to Katie) and Justin — and a 9-yearold grandson, Madden.

“I don’t know how I do it, I just do it. An understanding wife and family is what makes it work. That’s the key.”

The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON — Ever had a class in which your teacher tells you to look at the whole picture in order to fully understand the assignment? That’s how Dr. Mark Stinson looks at the family when it comes to medicine. A family physician at his own practice, located at 2101 Jackson St., and practicing medicine in Anderson since 1986, Stinson was voted as Madison County’s best doctor for 2013. “He’s extremely caring. He really embodies what a family physician should be,” said Dr. Gary Brazel, St. Vincent Anderson Regional’s Chief Medical Officer. The two worked together during the 1990’s and took care of one another’s patients when the other was out. Brazel said he was able to see the quality of care and compassion then. Stinson understands the family

dynamic and his patients receive excellent care and attention to detail, he said. It’s vital to know what’s going on in the family health wise as one person’s condition may affect or have led to another’s, Stinson noted, adding it’s important to

explain things to the immediate family so they can efficiently deal with an illness. “Being able to know everybody in the family makes a more wellrounded approach,” he said. His decision to go into family medicine had a lot to do with “the

continuity of care, watching the family grow.” As for becoming a doctor in the first place, Stinson said his father, Dr. Bill Stinson, was a huge inspiration. He too was a family physician and seeing “the satisfaction he got” from his job and the appreciation his patient’s showed him really influenced Stinson. They have a similar approach, mentality, philosophy. They did work together for 10 years. And Stinson said it takes a whole team to make a great practice. Much of the staff he works with has been with him for years and knows the patients like he

does. He added he’s blessed to have that. In addition to being a dedicated physician, despite how consuming medicine can be, Brazel said, Stinson is a great family man, as well. Stinson said he just has to budget his time accordingly to meet the needs of both his patients and family -- wife, Andrea, and sons Wes, a mechanical engineer living in Fort Wayne, and Alex, a student at Ball State University whose golf career Stinson follows. “I don’t know how I do it, I just do it,” he said. “An understanding wife and family is what makes it work. That’s the key.”

Margarita maker keeps regulars at Riviera Maya By Jack Molitor The Herald Bulletin

ANDERSON — Even on the coldest weeknight with ice on the streets and frozen rain falling from the sky, you’ll find regulars bellied up at the bar at Riviera Maya for margaritas. That’s one of the reasons the Mexican restaurant on South Scatterfield Road won Best Margarita in this year’s Best of Madison County competition presented by The Herald Bulletin. The restaurant, formerly known as Real Hacienda, has a second location downtown on 14th Street, and they sell the same margarita recipe, but to get the version that makes the stop a favorite among locals, you’ll usually need to head to the Scatterfield Road location and ask for Josue Quezada. A manager and designated margarita maker, Quezada, 32, said he’s been mixing almost since he came of legal drinking age. Quezada, who is ver y protective of the recipe he uses, said flavor is the most important aspect of a good margarita. “Definitely flavor,” Quezada. “I try to make it so they can’t taste the alco-

hol, but they can feel it. That’s what makes a good margarita.” Camille Singleton and Tiffany Hancock, both of Anderson, were stopped in late on a Thursday night to get a margarita fix. Selfdescribed as regulars, both women said Quezada’s margaritas are the best in the county. “They’re great. Good service and good drinks,” Singleton said. In a time when consumers are looking for deals, Hancock said Riviera Maya’s margaritas deliver. “They’re the best in town. They’re strong and they’re cheap, too. They have good specials here,” Hancock said. “They already know what I like.” The ladies also said the authentic Mexican food keeps them coming back. Singleton said the food is a bonus in an area where it’s hard to find good Mexican cuisine. “This is the best Mexican restaurant, to me,” Singleton said. Quezada said his job is most rewarding when customers praise his work and keep coming back. “What I enjoy the most is when they drink it, and they go out to everyone else, ‘they have good drinks there,’” Quezada said.

“They’re the best in town. They’re strong and they’re cheap, too. They have good specials here. They already know what I like.” Tiffany Hancock Anderson
