Updating your light fixtures can be a simple improvement in any room

W

hen tackling any lighting fixture swap, it’s important to have some electrical experience. If you aren’t experienced, don’t even make the attempt, if just for safety reasons. But if you have a little know-how, changing the look of a room can be as simple as changing out the lighting fixtures. There are several factors to consider, but doing a simple lighting project yourself can pay off financially.

SELECTING A LOOK Picking fixtures should be done before a lighting remodel even begins. Not picking fixtures soon enough is one of the biggest mistakes first-time remodelers make.

Keep in mind you have to like what the light fixture looks like, both while it’s on and off. A fixture may look one way while on, and other while off, depending on its color and what material it is made of. Flip the switch in the showroom on possible fixtures or ask a service attendant.

Wattage on bulbs should also be inspected to see if the fixture will light the area you want it to properly. Knowing whether the bulb is incandescent or fluorescent is important, as fluorescents can alter the look of skin tones in a mirror.

Then there’s answering the question of whether to install the fixture in an up or down position. While show rooms will display certain fixtures in one position, they can usually be flipped.

Interestingly, women usually prefer fixtures installed bulbdown because of the increased lighting it offers while men prefer them installed bulb-up.

INSTALLATION Once you get to the installation phase, make sure the fixture mount’s size is consistent with the fixture being replaced.

Make sure its placement will not inhibit opening nearby cabinets or drawers.

Check to make sure a secure mounting box is in the wall so a new fixture can be attached.

If it’s a hanging or recessed light fixture, a popular route to go for easier installation is to install a canned converter box.

Chandeliers or other hanging pieces can be replaced with new in-ceiling fixtures by using the adapter kit instead of having to dismantle the electrical wiring entirely.

Tips of the garden design trade from some of the greatest landscape architects

T

he finest landscape designers exhibit a continuity that demonstrates their unique styles.

The great works by these artists offer lessons for anyone interested in improving their appreciation of gardens, parks and cities. From about the middle to the end of the 19th century, the intent of landscape design evolved from a Victorian display of exotic plants into the more natural types of gardens popular today.

THE OLMSTEDS Frederick Law Olmsted (1822-1903) is the father of landscape architecture.

He was a complex, eclectic individual who lived through the Victorian era.

He was perfectly suited for that period, according to Lee Hall in her book “Olmsted’s America: An ‘Unpractical’ Man and His Vision of Civilization” (Little, Brown and Co., 1995).

Olmsted Jr. was the first landscape architect to sit on the U.S. Commission of Fine Arts, the body that must approve the location of all memorials and 6

other structures proposed for the Mall in Washington and surrounding areas. The commission has had a landscape architect on it ever since.

Bold plantings, including stands of forest trees, were one hallmark of Olmsted’s design. He designed curved lanes through woodlands, carefully configuring paths that gradually introduce visitors to views — a departure from formal, geometric grand entries. Central Park, the Biltmore Estate in Asheville, N.C., and one of the oldest series of parks and parkways in the country, Boston’s Emerald Necklace, all reflected nature’s effect on Olmsted.

A.E. BYE Landscape architect A.E. Bye (1919-2001) was an early advocate for installing native plants in natural settings, and that became his signature style. During the 1950s, Bye became an advocate of the natural instead of the formal, promoting the use of native plant materials and the restoration of native woodlands. I talked with Bye in the early 1990s about his style of landscape design. He joked that the best way he found to define a natural lane up a hillside or across a meadow was to get in a pickup truck and drive curves until you have the line you want.

f you haven’t started doing thinking about your spring garden, now is the time.

A few hours of planning, organizing and preparing now can save some money and give you a more manageable and efficient garden come spring.

And what gardener doesn’t enjoy dreaming about all those beautiful new plants and vegetables?

But first things first. Make note of the locations where plants did well and where they didn’t thrive.

Which vegetables were successful and which disappointed? Read some garden books and improve your gardening skills where necessary; then spend time considering exactly what you want to plant.

If you’re into salsa, for example, plan lots of space for peppers, onions and tomatoes. Do your research. By now, you should have quite a collection of seed catalogs. Use them and the Internet to sort through information on the varieties you’re interested in growing.

ORDERING SEEDS Order seeds as soon as possible. The earlier you get your order in, the better your chances of getting all the varieties you’re looking for. Once they’re ordered, you can create a growing time line. Work backward from the last average frost date in your area and start seeds indoors so they’ll be ready to set out when the temperature warms enough in the garden.

To begin, just use soilless sterile seed-starting mix and something to contain it. Plastic or paper cups, pizza boxes, takeout containers, soda bottles or just about anything else you can think of will work. Poke a few small drainage holes in the bottom, add the soil and then plant the seeds according to the package’s directions. Hang up 18

a grow light, like a fluorescent shop light, over the plants. Attach a simple timer that allows the light to remain on 16 hours each day. Adding a plastic or clear covering over your container will help hold moisture in, which is very important for seeds to germinate. But, you can skip this step as long as you make sure you supply the necessary moisture. This could be every day.

COMPOST Although it’s probably too cold for the compost to be actively working, keep tossing eggshells, coffee grounds, vegetable waste and other kitchen scraps (except proteins and fats) into the pile. When the weather starts warming up, add water and soil, and soon you’ll have some great compost to add to your garden soil. It’s the best soil amendment you can ever provide, and any time is the right time for adding compost.

TOOLS Maintain your tools. Clean them up, oil wooden handles and repaint metal surfaces. Sharpen shovels, pruning shears and other edged tools.

Once spring arrives, they’ll be ready to go and you can head right out into the garden. Start getting together all the miscellaneous items you’ll need, too: sturdy wire for trellises and black plastic or other covers to start warming the soil and killing weed seeds.

Indoor humidity levels beyond 70 percent create an environment in which mold spores can gain a foothold in your home.

Q:

I have a question about what the proper humidity should be in our home. I have several thermo-hygrometers in our house. Our home doesn’t feel too dry in the winter. We have a portable humidifier in our bedroom just to add a little moisture during the winter, and we enjoy the soothing hum of it. Our house stays anywhere from 30 to 40 percent in the coldest part of winter. Is that OK?

It would be difficult to raise indoor humidity levels above 40 percent when the room temperature is around 68 degrees of mechanically heated air. The warmer the air, the more moisture the air can hold, and 68 degrees may feel warm, but it’s not like summertime temperatures. If you can remember the 90-degree summer days, you know that there is also a corresponding high humidity level, because the warmer air holds moisture.

Also, I’ve had a heating and air company out to get a quote on installing a humidifier on the gas furnace. They told me that the space around our furnace wouldn’t accommodate a regular humidifier, but they recommended a steam humidifier due to the smaller size of the unit. What is your take on a steam humidifier?

What I have been told over the years is that the preferred wintertime level inside the home should be anywhere from 40 percent to 70 percent relative humidity at 68 degrees when the outside temperature is 30 degrees or less.

Indoor humidity levels beyond 70 percent create an environment in which mold spores can gain a foothold in your home. Fortunately, the air conditioner dehumidifies and cools the air at the same time.

It has been my experience that humidifiers connected to ductwork present the possibilities for rust or corrosion that can damage either the ductwork or the furnace.

Proper maintenance can prevent this type of problem from occurring.

I encourage my clients to add humidity by using in-room steam-producing humidifiers or vaporizers. Remember to shut off the humidifier in the summer so that the air conditioner is not overworked as it removes moisture from the air.

Getting your garden started can be as easy at 1-2-3

I

nterested in planting a small garden and actually sticking with it? Darrin Culp says setting goals is key.

The Oregon State University Extension Office instructor and horticulture agent said nailing down goals is an ideal springboard for seeing seeds through to harvest.

It can help aspiring gardeners discover exactly what they are hoping to get out of their garden, whether it be canning, freezing, a small produce business, or anything else. “Mostly, start simple,” Culp said.

Before planting a seed, give the soil plot a good mix, either with a spade or rototiller.

The soil should have a pH between 5 and 7.

A good rule of thumb is to plant the seed a distance of twice its size down in the soil.

Push it down with your finger into the dirt.

Scoop a layer of soil over the seed and pat it down.

IDENTIFYING GOALS Set your goals, then pick crops that will meet those goals. In the still-cold Klamath Basin months of March and April, would-be gardeners can get going on planting select crops. Kale, cabbage, other greens and radishes do well in the frosty weather, while corn, peppers and tomatoes are much more sensitive.

“I’ve heard some wives’ tales: Don’t plant your corn until snow’s off Pelican Butte kind of thing,” Culp said.

If it’s for vegetables you want to use in the kitchen, make sure you plant vegetables you like to eat.

Sometimes, cultivation is not needed, depending on the soil structure’s quality and if the area is cleared of weeds. In cases like this, it is possible to lay down a layer of potting soil over the area and plant seeds directly into that area.

A soil’s pH, or acidity, should also be tested. Ideally, it should be anywhere in the 5 to 7 range, as that is where necessary nutrients can be best absorbed by the crop seeds. OSU Extension Service officials can test the soil for a small fee. Most spots in the Klamath Basin have soil in this range or higher.

Products like elemental soil can be used to reduce pH. Rarely is the pH too low, but if it is, products like lime can be sprinkled to give it a needed boost.

After planting seeds to a depth of about twice their size — a good rule of thumb — it’s all about knowing your seed: when it should be watered, how often, if it needs to be covered and other factors.

ne of the most common pitfalls in pruning trees Darrin Culp has experienced is not being able to see into the future far enough.

“I think some people are better able to see the consequences of the cuts they make,” Culp said. “It’s hard to think down the road two to four years.”

The Oregon State University Extension Service instructor and home horticulture agent said he’s still learning the proper pruning process, but has a good grasp of the basics.

Pruning is an important step in managing a garden or orchard, preventing overgrowth and making for healthier plants overall.

The main trick is to know specifics about the plants being pruned, he said, including characteristics like their growth rate and when they bloom. The pruning pattern should also be considered. The “central leader” method, which trains trees and plants to have central dominant branches, is used primarily on apricot, cherry, pear and plum trees. The “open leader” method
