Your Chamber at Work…

When I think of November, I think of Thanksgiving. A time to pause and give thanks for our many blessings. Growing up, I recall it as a time to be with my family, a big spread of food for the Thanksgiving Meal followed by an afternoon of playing football in the front yard while my Mother, Father, Aunts and Uncles visited.

Our tradition now involves a trip to Rockmart, GA to be with my wife’s relatives. The tradition includes all of us joining hands for the blessing before we eat. Before the blessing, each one in the circle expresses something he or she is thankful for. It’s a great tradition and re-

minder that too often, we take for granted the many blessings we have.

We, in Henry County, have much to be thankful for. Yes, there’s the traffic issue and challenges that come with being in a growing community.

However, I submit to you that those are blessings. As I’ve stated before, there are other parts of this state that would gladly trade places with us.

I’m thankful for the One Henry volunteers who continue to focus on ways to make Henry County a place with job opportunities for our youth and to adequately train our youth for those jobs.

I’m thankful for the volunteers and staff of the Henry County Chamber of Commerce. As this year’s chairman of the board, I’ve seen

first-hand the amount of time many have put into volunteer work for the good of Henry County.

As in all communities these days, it seems all that you hear or read from media sources are negative and divisive issues. The focus on divisiveness seems to be a major theme each day. This Thanksgiving, I ask each of us in Henry County to think of our common goals and our shared values.

If only we could all gather in a big circle and state what we are thankful for, I think we would see just how similar we all are.

Top 5 Considerations Before Starting a Business

D

eciding whether or not to start a new business can be one of the most difficult decisions a person faces in life.

Every month over 540,000 new businesses are started in the U.S. according to the 2017 Kauffman Index. Georgia is consistently one of the highest-ranking entrepreneurial states and remains among the top for new business starts.

There are numerous reasons why so many Americans are willing to accept the risk and step out as an entrepreneur. Ultimately, the root of many of those reasons comes down to the perceived freedom, flexibility and income associated with being your own boss. According to the Small Business Administration (SBA), about two-thirds of businesses with employees survive at least 2 years and about half survive at least 5 years. Understanding that 50 percent of new businesses fail within 5 years, it is critical to

important and ongoing activity for business operations. The actual planning process serves as an exercise for the business owner to develop a clear understanding of their business concept and all the small components necessary to achieve success. While developing the plan, the entrepreneur should be able to identify potential problems with their plan and make needed corrections. Upon completion, the plan becomes an important management tool serving as a roadmap to achieve desired profits.

The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2019 Gets Cohesive on Their Teambuilding Day

Longtime Henry County Judge Retires After a 23-year Career HENRY COUNTY, GA- September 24, 2018 — Members of the community and a number of officials bade farewell to Superior Court Chief Judge Arch McGarity at a retirement ceremony on September 21 at the Henry County Courthouse in McDonough.

Former and current Superior Court judges including Judge Wade Crumbly, Judge Alex Crumbly, Judge Brian Amero and Judge John “Trea” Pipkin were also in attendance, each sharing kind words and the fond memories they have while working with McGarity throughout the years.

McGarity was appointed to Superior Court Judge for Henry County, Flint Judicial Circuit in 1995 by Governor Zell Miller and became Chief Judge in 2007. He also served two terms as the Administrative Judge for the Sixth Judicial District from July of 2010 to July 2014. Judge McGarity will continue to serve as a senior judge in the Flint Circuit but will be retiring from his Henry County Superior Chief Judge position at the end of this month.

Commissioner Holmes Received Community Service Award HENRY COUNTY, GA- September 19, 2018 — Henry County District V Commissioner Bruce Holmes has been selected by the Free and Accepted Ancient Yorkrite Masons to receive the Most Worshipful Smooth Ashlar Grand Lodge’s 2018 Community Service award on Saturday, September 22 in Atlanta.

Holmes is received the Community Service Award and was being honored for his significant accomplishments in “improving the lives of others and advancing the Arts, Sciences, Education, Politics and the community.”

James Touchton, the former director of policy and government affairs for the Council for Quality Growth, has been named economic development director for the city of Stockbridge.

Touchton, who worked with the Council for six years prior to coming to Stockbridge, also was a senior policy analyst and advisor for the Georgia Senate Research Office for five years.

Touchton received his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Kennesaw State University and is president of the Board for Advance Atlanta, a transit advocacy organization.

He also serves on the Town Center Alliance Advisory Board.

By Don Dunlap Chair, YLH Board of Directors The Youth Leadership Henry Class of 2019 assembled for their Teambuilding Day early on the morning of Monday, October 8, at the Fortson 4-H Center in Hampton. As participants arrived, they received their YLH polos and a copy of the book recommended to them by their speaker at last month’s reception, Mrs. Lori Harris. The book, The Six Pillars of Self-Esteem, was provided by our newest sponsor – “Story On The Square” bookstore in McDonough; we are grateful to Dr. Stephanie Gordon for her generous support.

We started our day with an intensive session learning to interpret the results of the Clifton Strengths assessment each member of the class took beforehand. Many business people have gained useful insights in how to learn their top 5 strengths and use them effectively in their organizations – our class members had the added benefit of having our session facilitated by the amazing Jenny Robbins, a trained facilitator provided by the GA EMC, whose Snapping Shoals and Central Georgia

These young people now know much more about themselves, and how they will most effectively interact with others to successfully achieve their goals!

The staff at Fortson prepared an excellent lunch for us to ensure we were “fueled” for the afternoon’s activities.

Nourished and re-energized, we broke up into groups and did some “on the ground” teambuilding activities, moved to some “lowropes” activities, then proceeded to the “high ropes” activities of Ziplining and Rock Wall climbing. Through the debriefings at each session, we learned how the activities we did applied to real-world team and leadership applications.

By the time we finished our day and the class members were picked up by their parents,

they had really broadened their knowledge of themselves, their classmates, and how beneficial it is to “get out of your comfort zone” sometimes, and rely on your team to accomplish organizational goals.

Leadership Henry Tours County during September Class September’s program day for Leadership Henry focused on the history of Henry County and some of the places and people that make our County unique.

The morning opened with several class members leading a discussion of The Energy Bus, the leadership curriculum utilized by the Leadership Henry program, before historian Gene Morris led the group in a moving historical tour that traversed all four Henry County cities. After their morning on the bus, the class returned to the Chamber for a Gezzo’s lunch.

The next stop during County Day took the class to Atlanta Motor Speedway (AMS), one of the most famous tracks in all of American motorsports. The 900acre facility has been the site of some of NASCAR’s most memorable moments and hosts numerous sporting and entertainment

events throughout the year. The class got a behind the scenes tour of AMS and even spent a few moments on the track stopping to get a photo together in the winner’s circle!

SEPTEMBER BUSINESS AFTER HOURS RECAP Hosted by Heritage Bank

It’s hard to pinpoint the best part of the September Business After Hours hosted by Heritage Bank—it all blended together for a fun and entertaining evening.

The event was a great mix of business networking and guests there to simply enjoy the company of friends and the delightful food and beverage. A showcase buffet, from scrumptious appetizers— think, pimento cheese on crustini with raspberry glaze —to a trio of delectable desserts, was the centerpiece of the room. Entrées of shrimp/ sausage and grits and chicken and waffles stood out amid the delicious options provided by caterer The Grand Gourmet. Adding more to the merry were the spiked strawberry mango punch and cold beer from the Jailhouse Brewing Company.

Heritage Bank President Kerry Arnold introduced attendees to the Heritage Community Foundation established by employees of Heritage Bank to provide financial support to local, community groups. Since 2015, the foundation has provided over $430,000 in grant funds to nearly 150 non-profit groups located in Clayton, Henry and Fayette Counties.

Vice President and Manager Kay Embrey and the entire Heritage Bank team at Keys Ferry was felt by all. However, fingers crossed throughout did not help name a winner in the Chamber Jackpot drawing for $600. Names drawn but not present to win were Pen-

Topic: How to Manage Growth— Henry County Comprehensive Plan through 2040

For the next Business Booster Luncheon, the Chamber is proud to introduce the Henry County Comprehensive Plan which has been developed as a way to guide investment, development and the allocation of services for the entire jurisdiction of Henry County. Consider that cities, towns and

counties are complicated places, that make decisions about the future every day, in response to new opportunities or unexpected problems — a Comprehensive Plan like Imagine Henry 2040 is one tool for helping to guide these decisions, with three distinctive features: • It is long-range, looking ahead 5, 10 or 25 years • It is comprehensive, looking across many different facets of what a County or City does • It is deliberative, looking within to understand the needs and desires of the County and Cities Imagine Henry 2040 affirms the county’s and cities’ big picture vision,

defines goals and lays out a task list for county and city leaders, staff and citizens to address issues and to position Henry County and the Cities of Hampton, Locust Grove and McDonough and Stockbridge to be leaders within metro Atlanta.

For the September BBL, the power networking event went on a field trip to Piedmont Henry. The venue, The Thomas F. Family Cancer Wellness Center, with seating for a few more than 50, was sold out. To set the scene, Piedmont Henry sponsorship hosts, Donna M. Braddy and Pam Milling, greeted everyone into an open and airy demonstration kitchen with dining and meeting space adorned with the latest in presentation technology. Upon entering, the attendees were invited to mingle and admire a beautiful collection of contemporary objects of art that caused one to pause every few feet and peek into several well-appointed therapy rooms that bore intriguing signage like “Arts & Expression Room” and “Reflection Room” —softening imageries

Diving right in, the attendees enjoyed hearty helpings of a colorful menu—which they learned were healthy representatives of the basic food groups including vegetables, fruits, protein, and grains/starches—and judged them delicious by all standards.

Updates about the hospital’s growth and expansions were delivered by CEO Deborah Armstrong, followed by Melissa Hoover, RD., LD, Outpatient Dietitian, who captivated the audience with her delivery of healthy food facts. In presenting “Healthy Habits for Hurried Lives,” Hoover engaged the audience with descriptions of the various states of hunger, from “weak with hunger” to “stuffed with stomach cramps,” helping everyone to identify when to eat and when to stop eating. Other key take-aways included how to measure healthy helpings using a sectioned plate – one of the gifts in the Piedmont Henry tote bags received by each attendee.

The climax of the day was a demo of how to prepare several quick and easy snacks which were passed around for all to enjoy. Piedmont Henry capped off the BBL adventure with several prize drawings.

Henry County Intergovernmental Retreat was held at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge This year, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce held its Intergovernmental Retreat (IGR), August 22-23, 2018. Over 50 leaders from government and private sector organizations throughout the county participated in the two day event to assess and examine ways to collectively address issues that will move the county forward.

In its 11th year, the focus of the annual event was a continuation of issues defined in the 2017 IGR and further discussed at the mid-year gathering in April, 2018. The lead concern, transportation patterns and how it impacts business growth and the quality of life in Henry County, was the foundation of the agenda.

A new element was added this year to help IGR attendees learn more about how Henry County operates and to better understand growth patterns currently in play within the county. A set of three tours, each with its own unique itinerary, were coordinated to take place on the first day of the IRG and included visits to local businesses and entities that provide economic vitality, workforce development or a showcase of technological innovation. Feedback from the tours was incorporated into the discussions on the second day of the IGR which was held at the Merle Manders Conference Center in Stockbridge. In the morning session, the state of transportation in Henry County was the topic of the presentation led by Cheri Matthews, Henry County Manager, with Stacey Jordan-Rudeseal, Chief Planner for Henry County, and Roque Romero, SPLOST Transportation Director, who helped summarize the comprehensive strategic growth and transportation plan that will carry Henry County through 2040.

In the afternoon session, participants developed a list of priority topics that would be shared with the local SPLOST committee. The afternoon discussion and meeting wrap-up was facilitated by Jenny Robbins, Manager of Community Development and Araina Reaves, Community Development Consultant with Georgia EMC, on behalf of Central Georgia EMC and Snapping Shoals EMC.

The Logistics & Manufacturing Tour included stops at Phillips-Van Heusen Corporation and Luxottica Group SpA.

The Technology & Innovation Tour included Piedmont Henry Hospital and the Georgia Power Company Call Center.

Education Tour participants stopped to visit the Academy of Advanced Studies , the Mercer University McDonough Campus and Southern Crescent Technical College – Henry County Center.
