The Role of the Digestive System The role of our digestive system is to digest and absorb nutrients taken in as food, and unless it does this efficiently, we are unlikely to achieve optimum health, however good our diet is. Enzymes must first breakdown the food consumed, into its component molecules ready for absorption in the small intestine. The efficient breakdown of food is essential to release vital nutrients. These nutrients must then be absorbed through often quite complex biochemical processes, which transport the nutrient molecules across the gut wall.

Flatulence & Bloating Excess gases building up in the digestive tract and then being expelled through the rectum cause flatulence. And whilst it isn’t a major health threat, it can be extremely embarrassing. It is generally caused by chemical reactions that occur after eating certain foods such as cabbage and cauliflower. Digestive enzymes are secreted into the digestive tract to breakdown food matter into its component nutrients. These can then be absorbed across the gut wall into the bloodstream. In one study of people with digestive problems, an amazing 85% noted an improvement after taking artichoke extract.

This herb seems particularly helpful where people have digestive disturbances, such as nausea, flatulence, abdominal pain and bloating.

Gut Spasms Food is propelled through the digestive tract by a wavelike movement termed peristalsis.

The alternate contraction and relaxation of the intestinal muscles push the food forward but sometimes this can be disrupted as in the case of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – the contractions become uncoordinated and the muscles go into spasm, often leading to abdominal pain.

Did you know?

Over a lifetime, no less than 100 tons of food passes along the digestive tract and 300,000 litres of digestive juices are produced by the body to break it down. The digestive tract itself has high nutrient needs because of its high turnover of epithelial cells and synthesis and secretion of digestive enzymes.

The disturbance of the peristaltic movement just described for gut spasms can also often cause the contents of the intestines to be pushed along far too quickly resulting in the sudden feeling of ‘urgency’ and the passing of loose watery motions.

There are also several other causes of loose motions including a bacterial or viral infection from contaminated food or water like in the case of ‘travellers tummy’. Fructo-oligosaccharide (FOS) As detailed under ‘Bowel Irregularity’, Eliminex® can be used to help maintain regularity. Whilst at smaller doses it can be used in another way, as a bowel-'conditioner'.

Eliminex® (FOS) feed the beneficial or 'friendly' bacteria in the large bowel (colon). Indeed a recent study has shown that just 8g of FOS daily for 2 weeks leads to a 10-fold increase in beneficial bacteria in the gut.
