Scores for IREAD-3

Certified results of the Indiana Department of Education’s spring and summer 2021 Indiana Reading Evaluation and Determination (IREAD-3) assessment show all six Hendricks County school corporations scored above the state average IREAD-3 measures the development of foundational reading skills by third grade. Statewide, 80.3% of public school students passed the test. Percentage scores for students passing in Hendricks County schoools were:

97.1 94.1 93.2 91.5 91.4 88.8

An analysis across student populations shows a significant literacy gap widening among Indiana’s racially and ethnically diverse, low-income, special education and English learner students. To provide additional support for Indiana schools as they teach students to read, IDOE is working to support schools in implementing evidence-based literacy practices based on the Science of Reading, a compilation of scientific research on reading, reading development and reading instruction. IDOE will partner with participating schools to train literacy coaches to help local educators implement Science of Reading-based instruction in their classrooms. Local schools can opt-in to the initiative. ______________________________________________

Community Crossing Grants

Three Hendricks County towns are among 218 Indiana cities, towns, and counties to receive a combined $101.9 million in state matching funds for local road projects. The grants are through Community Crossings, a part of the Next Level Roads program. Receiving grants are: Danville - $271,424. Pittsboro - $223,327.76 Plainfield - $100,000,000 “With these grants, communities can make ongoing investments so that Hoosier roadways are safe and dependable for years to come,” said State Rep. Greg Steuerwald (R-Avon) who co-authored legislation establishing the progam in 2016. “This money will certainly be put to good use as Indiana works to both preserve and improve its infrastructure.” According to State Rep. Jeff Thompson (R-Lizton) “The success of our economy depends on the quality of our infrastructure. This grant program is a unique partnership between the state and local governments, which has really helped small and large communities tackle local road and bridge projects.” Smaller municipalities must provide a 25 percent match in local funds, while large communities must provide a 50 percent match. State law requires that 50 percent of the available matching funds be awarded annually to communities within counties with a population of 50,000 or fewer. More information about the program and recipients can be found online at in.gov/indot/communitycrossings. ___________
