Literacy Bingo Night at DCMS

The Danville Kiwanis Club and K-Kids Club are hosting a Literacy Bingo Night on Friday, November 5th!

This event will be held in the Danville Community Middle School cafeteria, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and bingo starting at 6 p.m.

There will be nine games of bingo with prizes awarded. There will also be prizes raffled off throughout the night and all kids will leave with a book! A chili dinner will be available to purchase.

This is a free event for all to attend, however the clubs do ask for a food donation for the Nutrition Club.

Join Friends of the Library

The Friends of the Library (FOL) was founded to support the Danville-Center Township Public Library in various ways. They sponsor programs and help buy equipment through membership dues and fundraising activities such as used book sales.

Members can attend the FOL Coffee Klatch on the 2nd Wednesday of each month from 10 a.m. - noon. Along with interesting conversations, the volunteers work on various projects for FOL and the library. Memberships are available at the following levels:

Student/Senior: $5 yearly; Individual, $10 yearly; Family, $20 yearly; Business/Organization, $50 yearly; Life Member, $150; Heart of Gold Life Member, $300.

Danville Cheerleaders to State Finals

The Danville Varsity Cheerleaders will appear in the State Finals in New Castle, Ind. on Saturday, November 6. The Indiana Cheer Championship is a program of the Indiana Association of School Principals (IASP). While it is not a sanctioned event by the IHSAA, the IASP web site states that this is an event “exclusively for Indiana school cheerleading teams,” and that “competing in an Indiana Cheer Championship even is a great way to spotlight cheerleading talent in a fun, safe, exciting and educationally sound environment.”

Congratulations to Danville Varsity Cheer on your success this year and for advancing to the finals. Good luck this weekend!

Walls Up, New Building Rising

The northwest corner of the court house square is taking a new shape as work on the new building that will house Fast Track Physical Therapy progresses.

In the mid-19th century the east half of the block contained a two-story frame building and was called White Corner. One early resident described it as the place where “the men and boys of the town met there, morning, noon and night” to talk of baseball and other matters of importance. Members of the A.M.E. church hosted Christmas dances there.

In 1890, that frame building was replace by a two-story brick building that housed The County Fair, the county’s largest department store. The building changed hands several times, becoming the home of the Baker & Son Hardware Store. In 1935, fire destroyed the upper story. The building wasremodeled into a one-story building. In 1951, the building was purchased by Danners, Inc., along withthe two buildings adjoining it to the west. In 2015, after setting unoccupied for several years, the back wall of the building collapsed and it was condemned and torn down.

In addition to housing Fast Track, the new building contains an additional 5,000+ square feet of lease space available.

Celebrating 65 th Anniversary

John and Sandra “Sonn” Mitchell will be celebrating their 65th wedding anniversary. They were married on November 5, 1965, in Bucktown, Sullivan County, Indiana.

Holiday Hours at GOTS

The Gallery on the Square, 51 S. Washingto St., Danville will have extended holiday hours for your shopping convenience. Hours will be Monday - Thursday, 10 a.m. - 5 p.m.; Friday (starting Nov. 5) 10 a.m. - 7 p.m.; Saturday (starting November 6), 10 a.m. - 4 p.m.; and Sunday (starting November 28), noon to 4 p.m.

The Gallery has unique gift ideas and greeting cards made by local artists.

Create a Downtown Danville Christmas Tree Display

The Downtown Danville Partnership invites you to create a Christmas tree to display on the court house square in December.

Displays may include only one tree: it can be an artificial tree or made of other materials. Decorative creativity is encouraged!

Power for lights, and one post for anchoring your tree in a concrete planter will be provided. Planters are approximately 3 feet wide and 2 feet high. This is a juried contest, and spots are limited. Trees must be delivered and installed on the court house square on Saturday, November 20, between 9 a.m. and noon. Check-in will be near the fountain. Location will be assigned on the sidewalks around the square.

Displays must be able to withstand inclement weather conditions. You may be contacted to repair your display. No political/controversial displays. Jurors will select 1st, 2nd, & 3rd place on Saturday, November 20. Winners will be announced during Christmas on the Square, Friday, November 26.

Displays may be dismantled any time between Monday, December 27 and Thursday, December 30.

One Step Closer - Danville Defeats Indian Creek

Week two of the Sectional championship’s arrived in a monsoon as the Danville Warriors made their way 38 miles south and east to take on the Braves of Indian Creek.

With heavy rain most of the day and well into the evening, the team colors of Danville (wearing their road game white jerseys) would change throughout the game. Another mud bowl for the Warriors but they would not let that deter them from taking one more step toward another Sectional Championship.

Danville took early command of the game and never let up. Senior BJ Wuest set the tone, literally out of the gate, when he returned the opening kick off 85 yards for the touchdown and a 7-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.

After several defensive stops by Danville and then touchdowns by Andrew Poppa, another by BJ Wuest, and Cayden Madding, the Warriors took a 31-0 lead into the halftime locker room.

In the second half, Danville put the offense on cruise control and coasted to the end of the game. Teke Tanksley would get into the action for the Warriors adding a 12- yard rushing touchdown in the third quarter. Ethan Lathery rushed in for the 2-point conversion. Danville won this one easily by a final score of 39-6.

Next week Danville takes on their archrival, Tri West Bruins, at home, for the Sectional Championship.

Bison is Back Home Again

Hendricks County’s Bicentennial Bison has roamed back home to his pasture on the court house lawn. The fiberglass beast had taken a tumble last winter and suffered some exterior damage. Thanks to the fiberglass and painting veterinarians at Hackleman’s body shop, the noble creature has made a full recovery.

According to Hendricks County Facilities Manager Kevin Cavenaugh, JJ, as the bison has been nicknamed, is more secured to his stomping ground.

The statue was purchased by the County as part of the Indiana Bicentennial celebration in 2016. He was painted and decorated with the Indiana State Flag by local artist Kerry Trout.

JJ now monitors traffic on Main street and appears happy to be back home again.

Scares on the Square Was a Real Treat!

Even Mother Nature couldn’t put a damper on the Halloween spirit as families came by the score to enjoy the Downtown Danville Partnership’s inagural Scares on the Square. Costumes, from cute to creepy were on parade, with food, fun, and games for everyone. Scarecrow winners were announced: 1st place, Cradles to Crayons; 2nd place, Homegrown Salon; 3rd place, Kiwanis Club.

There’s No Place Like Home for Halloween!

Readers may recall an advertisement in this paper a short while back, seeking a king-size pumpkin. Well, it does pay to advertise in The Republican and here is the proof. Vornholt siblings Julie (Madison,Wisconsin) and David (Chicago, Illinois) returned to the family manor for the carving of said giant gourd, aided and abetted by friends and spouse. Gathered ‘round the pumpkin are, left to right: Chandler Freyholt, Julie Freyholt, Zach Decker, Jenny McPherson, Grant Craig, Daniel Miller, Adam Decker, Jared Smith, Analisa DeBon, Alex Goodman, David Vornholt. No word on what was done with the pumpkin seeds, whether they were secretly planted around the compound or saved to trade for a family cow.

Genealogy Nuts Next Topic: Genetic Genealogy

The November Genealogy Nuts meeting is Monday,November 8, at 1 p.m. at the Danville Public Library. Steven Frank from the Central Indiana DNA Interest Group will be discussing Introduction to Genetic Genealogy.

DNA is the most revolutionary tool for genealogy in the past 25 years. This lecture is for beginners wanting to know how to best integrate DNA into their genealogy research. Frank will explain the different types of DNA tests available for genealogy as well as the differences between companies. Included is an overview DNA tests features and the basics of how get started using them, as well as information on health and privacy concerns.

Currently, the Genealogy Nuts are holding hybrid meetings – both in person and virtual. The meeting will be in the program room of the Library. Winterland is Coming!

Winterland drive-thru light display in Ellis Park, set to open Friday, November 19, at 6 p.m. Presented by the Greater Danville Chamber of Commerce and Danville Parks Department, Winterland is open daily, Nov. 20 - Dec. 27 (closed Thanksgiving Day. Hours are Sunday to Thursday, 6 - 9 p.m. and Friday and Saturday, 6 - 10 p.m. Santa will be at the Train Station Friday-Sunday nights.
