Gibbs Park To Open
Hendricks County Parks & Recreation (HCP&R) invites the public to W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park in Avon for the park’s Grand Opening on Wednesday, July 21 at 9 a.m. W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park is a 70-acre facility located within the town limits of Avon, although its official address is 4521 Gibbs Road in Danville. The Grand Opening ceremony will take place at the Bluegill Shelter near large two ponds totaling over 5 acres in size. It is free to attend, and the public is welcome to attend. Beginning July 21, the park will be open from dawn to dusk daily, and admission is free of charge. In addition to the two ponds, the park sports two large shelters, an 18-hole disc golf course, a nature-themed playground, a 30-foot-tall observation and sledding hill, more than two miles of trails, several picnic tables, green space, paved roadways and parking lots, and more. A large ADA-accessible fishing dock will be installed on one of the two ponds later this summer, and the ponds will be stocked with fingerlings by the Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) Division of Fish & Wildlife later in the year, which will eventually allow anglers to fish the ponds and keep their catches while abiding by DNR rules and regulations. The nature-themed playground has two sets of equipment – one designed for 2- to 5-year-olds and the other designed for 5- to 12-year-olds. A nature play area will be constructed in coming months behind the playground area. Bluegill Shelter is 24 by 44 feet in size and sits on a concrete pad. An ADA-accessible concrete walkway leads from a paved ADA-accessible parking lot. The shelter includes picnic tables and a large mounted grill. On the north side of the property in the middle of 20 acres of woods is the Firefly Shelter, a 20-by-36-foot pavilion on a concrete pad with an ADA-accessible concrete walkway from a paved parking lot. It includes picnic tables and a large mounted grill. Both pavilions will be available for daily rentals beginning August 2. Designed by Civil Engineering Consultants out of Greencastle and constructed by John Hall Construction out of Plainfield and HCP&R’s maintenance crew, W.S. Gibbs Memorial Park is opening almost exactly a year after its Groundbreaking Ceremony. HCP&R also worked closely with the Hendricks County Disc Golf Club to design and install the 18-hole disc golf course. More information about W.S. MARCIA G. “Marty” McCARTER, 78, of Chillicothe, Ill., formerly of Plainfield and Indianapolis, passed away on Tuesday, June 22, 2021. Marty was born on October 3, 1942 in Plainfield, to Robert S. “Bob” and Eloise Hopkins Castetter. She graduated from Plainfield High School in 1960; and was a past member of Job’s Daughters and a member of Plainfield Friend’s Meeting (A Quaker Church). Marty is survived by her partner, Dean Hayden; her children, Robert Dale McCarter, Francine Deanne (David) Bertram, and James Arnold McCarter, Jr.; her sister, Anita (Donald) Abplanalp. She was a grandmother to Ravyn Nicole (Jim) Stadick, Christopher David Archdale, James Arnold McCarter, III, and Haley Paige McCarter; a great-grandmother to Alba Jane Stadick, Maggie Jo Archdale, and Maple June Stadick. Preceding her in death were her parents and her great-grandson, Gavin Michael Klein. Marty retired as a teacher’s aide from Chillicothe Elementary Center (Chillicothe, Ill.). Her compassion influenced and touched so many lives, that many of her students stayed in contact with her well into their adulthood. Marty had a passion for playing the piano and organ, and was in much demand for church services, weddings, and any other special occasion where someone wanted to hear her play. During the summers while residing in Indianapolis, gospel, contemporary, and melodies from musicals would resonate throughout the neighborhood. Neighbors would hear her blowing a silver whistle in three distinct patterns depending on which child she was trying to call home. During the fall, the sound of steam escaping from a pressure cooker and the wonderful smells of fruits and vegetables being canned filled her home while boxes of Mason jars, lids, and rings were piled high on the kitchen table and counters. Her cupboards were always full, and jars gifted throughout the year. Before her health declined, Marty loved to knit and crochet, spin and die wool to make her own yarn, embroider, create crafts using gourds, as well as draw Zentangle designs. She and Dean loved to travel to antique tractor shows, at times wearing period costumes, where Dean would display his ‘toys’ and Marty would show-off some of her projects; all the while camping out and roughing it. But most important to Marty was her love of family. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, July 17, in the Hampton-Gentry Funeral Home, Plainfield, where friends may call on Saturday from 1 p.m. until service time at 2 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting memorial contributions be made to the Alzheimer’s Association (www.alz.org), 225 North Michigan Avenue, Floor 17, Chicago, IL 60601 Location of burial will be Friends Grove Quaker Cemetery in Toledo, Ill. at a later date. ___________________________________________________ CAROLYN SUE SPENCER, 85, Brownsburg, passed away peacefully in her home on July 7, 2021, surrounded by her beloved husband of 67 years and their three daughters.
